The brown alga Saccharina japonica is widely consumed in Asian countries, and post-harvest drying methods such as sun drying and oven drying are commonly used to extend the shelf life of S. japonica. Thus, the present study analyzed the ethanol extract and organic solvent fractions of S. japonica to examine the effects of UVA and heating on certain bioactive compounds (fucoxanthin, phlorotannin compounds, and total antioxidants) during the drying process. The fucoxanthin contents in the ethanol extract and different solvent fractions significantly decreased in response to UVA. However, fucoxanthin in the ethanol extract and other fractions showed resistance to thermal treatment. It is noteworthy that the total phlorotannin content (TPC) in the ethanol extract and all fractions showed an approximately 2.5-fold increase upon UVA radiation. The TPC also increased in all samples exposed to high temperatures, except for those in the chloroform fraction. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) also exhibited significant increases in a pattern similar to the TPC. The findings demonstrate that UVA exposure and heating stimulated the degradation of fucoxanthin while it increased the TPC and TAC in the extract and fractions of S. japonica.

AbstractRosa pimpinellifolia L. fruits (RPF) are promising source of anthocyanin pigments. The objectives of this study were to optimization of the aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) process of anthocyanin from RPF and microencapsulation of anthocyanin-rich RPF extract. The optimal ATPE conditions were as follows: 0% HCl, 30% ethanol, 19% ammonium sulfate, and liquid to solid ratio 51.71, 97.71 min, and 30°C extraction temperature. Predicted anthocyanin yield at the optimum conditions was 1578.90 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalent/100 g dry fruit. ATPE resulting in 1.80-fold increase in the purity of anthocyanins when compared to conventional solvent extraction (CSE). The composition of the anthocyanins were determined with HPLC-QTOF-MS. Freeze-drying and spray-drying methods were employed for the production of microencapsulated anthocyanin pigments. The half times of microencapsulated anthocyanins at 4, 25 and 37°C were determined as 12.16, 6.60 and 3.12 months for freeze-dried microcapsules, and 16.50, 9.24 and 4.29 months for spray-dried microcapsules, respectively.

Abstract Background Chicory is one of the major source of inulin. In our study, Box–Behnken model/response surface analysis (RSM) was used for the optimization of spray drying process variables to get the maximum inulin yield from chicory (Cichorium intybus L.). For this investigation, the investigational plan utilized three process variables drying temperature (115–125 °C), creep speed (20–24 rpm), and pressure (0.02–0.04 MPa). Result The optimal variables established by applying the Box–Behnken model were as follows: drying temperature 119.20 °C, creep speed 21.64 rpm, and pressure 0.03 MPa. The obtained powdered inulin by spray drying was investigated for the yield value, identification, size, and surface morphology of the particle. The inulin obtained from the spray drying process consists of a fine molecule-sized white powder. Instead, the drying methods shows a significant effect on the morphology and internal configuration of the powdered inulin, as the inulin obtained from spray drying was of a widespread and uniform size and shape, with a rough surface on increase in temperature and smoother surface while increasing the creep speed. The findings indicate that the spray drying with optimum parameters resulted in maximum product yield. Conclusion The outcomes of the study concluded that the product yield through spray drying technique under optimized condition is optimal as compared to other drying technique. Hence, this technique may be applied at commercial scale for the production of inulin.

We report a physiologically stable and cytocompatible glucose-responsive nonviral gene delivery system made up of boronate functionalized polymeric material. Herein, we utilize boronate cis-diol interactions to develop a glucose-responsive submicron particle (SMP) system. The stability of the boronate interaction at a physiological pH was achieved by copolymerization of dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with acrylamidophenylboronic acid (AAPBA) and the formation of a complex with polyvinylalcohol (PVA) which is governed by cis-diol interactions. The shift in hydrodynamic diameter of SMPs was observed and correlated with increasing glucose concentrations at a physiological pH. Optimal transfection was observed for a 5 µg dose of the gaussia luciferase reporter gene in NIH3T3 cells without any adverse effect on cellular viability. The destabilization of the AAPBA–PVA complex by interacting with glucose allowed the release of encapsulated bovine serum albumin (BSA) in a glucose-responsive manner. In total, 95% of BSA was released from SMPs at a 50 mM glucose concentration after 72 h. A two-fold increase in transfection was observed in 50 mM glucose compared to that of 10 mM glucose.

Strawberry is the most consumed berry fruit worldwide due to its unique aroma and flavor. Drying fruits to produce a powder represents one of the possible conservation methods to extend their shelf-life. The aim of the present study was to compare the influence of freezing and different drying methods on the volatile profile of strawberry using the HS-SPME/GC–MS method, in addition to analysis of strawberry jam volatiles. A total of 165 compounds were identified, accounting for 85.03–96.88% of the total volatile compositions. Results and PCA showed that freezing and each drying process affected the volatile profile in a different way, and the most remarkable representative differential volatiles were ethyl hexanoate, hexyl acetate, (E)-2-hexenyl acetate, mesifurane, (E)-nerolidol, γ-decalactone, 1-hexanol, and acetoin. Shade air-dried, frozen, freeze-dried, and oven-dried 45 °C samples retained more of the fruity and sweet aromas of strawberry, representing more than 68% of the total aroma intensity according to the literature. In contrast, the microwave-drying method showed drastic loss of fruity esters. Strawberry jams demonstrated complete destruction of esters and alcohols in most jams, while terpenes were significantly increased. These findings help better understand the aroma of strawberry and provide a guide for the effects of drying, freezing, and jam processing.

Kenop Flower (Gomphrena globosa L.) is used in the manufacture of lip cream because contains betacyanin pigments that function as color pigments. This study aims to determine the physical quality and stability of the lip cream preparation of the ethanol extract of kenop flower (Gomphrena globosa L.). This research was conducted experimentally, including the manufacture of lip cream formulations with ethanol extract of kenop flower (Gomphrena globosa L.) with a concentration of 10%. The results of the physical examination test for lip cream preparations for all preparations have a distinctive vanilla aroma with a semi-solid texture, F0 has ivory white color and F1-F3 has a brown color. The preparations had a homogeneous composition, average pH 6-7, had good greasing power, 5.0-5.8 average dispersion and 60.33-66.67 seconds average adhesion. The stability test carried out on day 28 found that all preparations were stable, had a distinctive vanilla aroma with a semi-solid texture, F0 had ivory white color and F1-F3 had a brown color. The preparation has a homogeneous composition; the average pH is 6-7. Where the lip cream formulas F1 and F3 decreased the pH value on the 28th day from 7 to 6 but tended to be stable and in the pH range that matched the lip pH. And there is no phase separation in all formulas.

<p>This study investigates the relationships between financial hegemony groups, global diversification strategies and firm value of the Malaysia’s 30 largest companies listed in FTSE Bursa Malaysia Index Series during 2009 to 2012 period. We chose Malaysia as an ideal setting because the findings contribute to the phenomenon of the diversification–performance relationship in the Southeast Asian countries. We apply hegemony stability theory to explain the importance of financial hegemony groups in deciding international locations for operations. By using panel data analysis, we find that financial hegemony groups are significantly important in international location decisions. Results reveal that the stability of financial hegemony in BRICS and G7 groups enhances the financial value of the Malaysia’s 30 largest companies, whereas the stability of financial hegemony in ASEAN groups is able to enhance the non-financial value of the firms. Overall, this paper suggests that in order to diversify globally, it is necessarily for the manager in the guest country to evaluate and fully understand the host country’s geopolitical situation and its financial stability.</p>

Phytochemicals, that is, chemicals present in various plants and herbs , are now becoming important candidates for development of drugs.Wide range of medicinals plants {Plants from which potential photochemicals are isolated for development of drugs for treatment of diseases}present in South Asian countries have now been increasingly utilized for development of phytomedicines. Treatment with ethanol extract of leaf of Cajanus indicus Spreng at a dose of 50 mg /kg body weight for 20 days, after induction of hepatotoxic damage by CCl4, produce significant elevation of the hepatic injury. The liver marker enzymes like(Aspartate Transaminate) AST, GGT(Gamma Glutamyl Transferase), ALT(Alanine Transaminase) and ALP(Alkaline Phosphatase) decreased significantly at the above dose showing the optimum effect against hepatic damage. The liver antioxidant enzymes SOD, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase and the membrane damaging indicators TBARS(Thiobarbituric Acis Reactive Species), conjugate diene and marker of glutathione status indicate the mechanism of healing action to be due to scavenging of free radicals or ROS. The results thus gives a confirmatory proof that the healing action of ethanol extract of leaf of Cajanus indicus Spreng is for shifting of equilibrium from the peroxidant to antioxidant side and the leaf acts as a natural antioxidant and healer of CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jonmc.v1i1.7284 Journal of Nobel Medical College Vol.1(1) 2011 20-26

One way to prevent or inhibit melanin formation is by inhibiting tyrosinase activity (Lloyd,2011). Tyrosinase enzyme is an enzyme that plays a role in the formation of skin pigments or known as melanogenesis. In the process of melanogenesis, the enzyme tyrosinase acts as a catalyst in two different reactions, namely the hydroxylation process of tyrosine to dihydroxy-phenylalanine (L-DOPA) and oxidation of L-DOPA to quinone DOPA. Tyrosinase in skin tissue is activated by solar UV radiation so that it accelerates the process of melanin production (Fais et al.  2009).  This  study  was  conducted  to  determine  the  stability,  effectiveness  of  cream preparations from ethanol extracts of Harendong fruit (Melastoma affine D. Don) as tyrosinase enzyme inhibitors so it can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for whitening or skin lightening. Results Cream with variants of Harendong (Melastoma affine D. Don) ethanol extract was physically stable and formulated with organoleptic test, homogeneity, viscosity, mechanical test, pH, cycling test, and irritation test. Type M / A cream preparations from ethanol extract of Harendong fruit (Melastoma affine D. Don) have a strong / moderate tyrosinase enzyme inhibitor activity with IC50 values of F1 (1%) of 526,192 ppm, F2 (1.5%) ) amounted to 317,534 ppm and F3  (2%)  amounted  to  128,523  ppm.  Keywords: Foemulation,  stability test, activity test, tyrosinase enzyme, herenong fruit (Melastoma affine G.Don)
