The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a child’s diet in the first year of life (breastfeeding duration, introduction of solid meals to the diet, the time of starting nutrition consistent with an adult diet) on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool age. Three-hundred children aged 4–6 were included in the analysis. The children’s height and body weight were assessed and their body mass category was determined based on the BMI (Body Mass Index) percentile. Parents provided a photocopy of the child’s health book (with information concerning breastfeeding period, start of eating the same meals as the rest of the family, etc.). Obese children were breastfed for the shortest time, cow’s milk was introduced to their diets the earliest, they started eating the same food as the rest of the family the earliest, and they received vegetables, fruits, cereals, and meat products in their diet the latest. The results of this study suggest that extending the breastfeeding period beyond 6 months, starting to feed the child the same meals as the rest of the family after 12 months of age, and later introduction of cow’s milk to the diet would reduce the risk of the occurrence of excessive body weight in preschool children.

Background and Objectives. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between children’s birth weight/length and a risk of overweight and obesity. Materials and Methods. The study involved 747 children from kindergartens, as well as primary and middle schools from southeastern Poland. All the subjects were examined on fasting status. Each child was examined for body mass and height, in order to calculate their body mass index (BMI), and BMI centile. The parents completed a questionnaire related to basic information about the child and the family. Results. In the study group, the male infants presented greater birth body weight and birth body length. A comparison of the distribution of birth weights and lengths between the children with normal BMI and with high BMI showed statistically significant differences only in the case of birth length of 12–15-year-old children and in the group of boys aged 12–15 years. In the case of the female children and the group of 7–11-year-olds a statistically significant difference was found in the BMI centile at a later age—a higher centile was found in the girls and in the children aged 7–11 years classified as adequate for gestational age (AGA). Conclusions. Birth body weight is positively related to BMI centile; however, no significant differences were found in birth weight between children with overweight/obesity and children with normal body weight. Birth length is associated with a lower BMI centile only in boys aged 12–15 years, and lower birth length is found in boys with overweight and obesity.

Disease and hospitalization are often the main crises that children face, causing the child to experience trauma. The phenomenon of separation and experience of hospitalized children shows when a child is hospitalized will experience a change in emotional status, as well as parents crying, anxious, angry. Preschool age is very susceptible to the effects of tress during hospitalization, so there is a need for family support. The objective of the study was to explore the support of the family in order to decrease the hospitalization of preschool children in the orchid room of RSUD Nganjuk. The research method used qualitative research with phenomenological approach. Data collection using primary and secondary data then conducted in-depth interviews (indepth interview) with semi-structured questions. Informants as many as 5 people according to the inclusion criteria that researchers make are families who have preschool children, long day 1-3 care, family as the main caregiver, children with medical diagnosis group of internal medicine, children do not have terminal disease, the family is willing to become informants. The results show that family support includes informational support, assessment support, emotional support and instrumental support. But the support has not been maximal because it is influenced by the reaction of children and parents who are varied towards hospitalization along with influencing factors such as child adaptation process, the existence of rooming in, sibling reaction. The conclusion of the study was family support during the effort to decrease the hospitalization reactions of preschool children. Based on these studies it is necessary to conduct further research on family support in reducing the impact of pre-school children's hospitalization.

Abstract Background: Body mass index and skeletal age are important indicators of individual growth and maturation. The recognition of their association could contribute to the prevention of childhood obesity and accelerated skeletal maturation. This study aimed to examine the effects of overweight and obesity on accelerated skeletal maturation in preschool children. Methods: Participants included 1330 children aged 3.1-6.6 years. The main outcomes were skeletal age assessed by left hand-wrist radiograph, and body mass index classified as thinness, normal weight, overweight and obesity. Results: The percentage of accelerated skeletal maturation increased with body mass index ( x 2 = 89.442, df = 3, P <0.01) and age group ( x 2 = 43.417, df = 5, P <0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed a higher risk of accelerated skeletal maturation in children with overweight and obesity than children with normal weight after adjusting for gender and age (Overweight, OR = 3.27, 95% CI : 2.20-4.87; Obese, OR = 4.73, 95% CI : 2.99-7.48). Conclusions: Accelerated skeletal maturation was associated with overweight and obesity in preschool children, and its prevalence increased with age. These findings suggest that parents and child-health managers should be aware of an existing risk of accelerated skeletal maturation in preschool children with overweight and obesity.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic caused a number of changes in social life around the world. In response to the growing number of infections, some countries have introduced restrictions that may have resulted in the change of the lifestyle. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of the lockdown on body weight, physical activity and some eating habits of the society. The survey involving 183 people was conducted using a proprietary questionnaire. The mean age of the study participants was 33 ± 11 and mean height 169 ± 8 cm. An average increase in body weight was observed in 49.18% by 0.63 ± 3.7 kg which was the result of a decrease in physical activity and an increase in food consumption. We also observed a decrease in PAL from 1.64 ± 0.15 to 1.58 ± 0.13 and changes in the amount of food and individual groups of products consumption, including alcohol. Among the study participants who did not lose body mass, there was an average weight gain of 2.25 ± 2.5 kg. In conclusion, an increase of weight was shown in about half of the respondents in the study group which was associated with a decrease in physical activity and an increase in the consumption of total food and high energy density products.

It has been acknowledged that excess body weight increases the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC); however, there is little evidence on the impact of body mass index (BMI) on CRC patients’ long-term oncologic results in Asian populations. We studied the influence of BMI on overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and CRC-specific survival rates in CRC patients from the administrative claims datasets of Taiwan using the Kaplan–Meier survival curves and the log-rank test to estimate the statistical differences among BMI groups. Underweight patients (<18.50 kg/m2) presented higher mortality (56.40%) and recurrence (5.34%) rates. Besides this, they had worse OS (aHR:1.61; 95% CI: 1.53–1.70; p-value: < 0.0001) and CRC-specific survival (aHR:1.52; 95% CI: 1.43–1.62; p-value: < 0.0001) rates compared with those of normal weight patients (18.50–24.99 kg/m2). On the contrary, CRC patients belonging to the overweight (25.00–29.99 kg/m2), class I obesity (30.00–34.99 kg/m2), and class II obesity (≥35.00 kg/m2) categories had better OS, DFS, and CRC-specific survival rates in the analysis than the patients in the normal weight category. Overweight patients consistently had the lowest mortality rate after a CRC diagnosis. The associations with being underweight may reflect a reverse causation. CRC patients should maintain a long-term healthy body weight.

Abstract Objectives Overweight and obesity are associated with hypertension (HTN) in renal transplant recipients (RTR). Body weight variability is known to be associated with HTN and poor cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in diabetic patients. After successful kidney transplantation (KT), weight change is very common due partly to perioperative and immunological factors. Association between body weight variability and HTN in RTR is unknown. We hypothesize that high body weight variability is associated with post-transplant HTN. Methods Body weight variability of RTR from a single transplant center was assessed as visit-to-visit body mass index variability (VVBMIV) by using average successive variability (ASV = the average absolute difference between successive values of BMI measured at 4, 12, 24, 36, and 48 weeks after KT). Multi-variable Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to examine association between post-transplant VVBMIV and systolic and diastolic HTN (SHTN and DHTN), which are defined as SBP and DBP ≥130 and 80 mmHg, respectively. Results Of 104 RTR, mean ± SD age was 54.29 ± 11.65 years and 62% were female. The majority (36%) were obese followed by normal weight (33%), and overweight (31%). Incidence of SBP was 0.041 person-weeks and median time to event was 12.86 weeks; while the incidence of DBP was 0.036 person-weeks with a slightly longer median time-to-event of 13 weeks. Mean ASV of BMI was 1.26 ± 0.82 kg/m2 (0.47 to 2.18). Risk of SHTN is increased 32% for every 1 kg/m2 increase in VVBMIV (HR 1.32, 95%CI 1.04 to 1.68, P 0.022). After adjusted for age, gender, and their interaction terms, very 1 kg/m2 increase in VVBMIV is associated with a 29% greater risk of developing SHTN (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.65, P 0.043). However, increase in VVBMIV is not associated with an increased risk of DHTN for both univariable (HR 1.15, 95%CI 0.88 to 1.49, P 0.308) and multi-variable Cox regressions models (HR 1.13, 95%CI 0.86 to 1.49, P 0.391). Conclusions Post-kidney transplant VVBMIV is independently associated post-transplant SHTN, but not DHTN. Further studies is needed to examine mechanism of body weight variability and blood pressure outcomes in RTR. Funding Sources None.

In recent years, the worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults and children has dramatically increased. The conventional model regarding the onset of obesity is based on an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. However, other possible environmental factors involved, such as the exposure to chemicals like pesticides, cannot be discarded. These compounds could act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) that may interfere with hormone activity related to several mechanisms involved in body weight control. The main objective of this study was to systematically review the data provided in the scientific literature for a possible association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to pesticides and obesity in offspring. A total of 25 human and 9 animal studies were analyzed. The prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal exposure to organophosphate, organochlorine, pyrethroid, neonicotinoid, and carbamate, as well as a combined pesticide exposure was reviewed. This systematic review reveals that the effects of pesticide exposure on body weight are mostly inconclusive, finding conflicting results in both humans and experimental animals. The outcomes reviewed are dependent on many factors, including dosage and route of administration, species, sex, and treatment duration. More research is needed to effectively evaluate the impact of the combined effects of different pesticides on human health.

Changes in the political, social and economic spheres of modern Kazakhstan society dictate the need to increase attention to the socialization of preschool children in the family and preschool organizations. The integrity of the pedagogical process is understood as the integrity of the processes of socialization and individualization of the preschool child, preservation of the child's nature and its development in culture, enrichment of individual cultural experience in the process of inclusion in the socio-cultural experience, unity of development and education. The modern pedagogical process is designed as a system of conditions that allow each child to realize individual needs and at the same time interact with the children's community. The organization of children's activities initiates the creation of children's associations in which each child performs a favorite function and simultaneously cooperates with other children. In such an educational space, the processes of socialization and individualization leading to preschool age harmoniously complement each other.
