Nanocrystalline metals have been the cause of substantial intrigue over the past two decades due to their high strength, which is highly sensitive to their microstructure. The aim of the present project is to develop a finite element two-phase model that is able to predict the elastic moduli and the yield strength of nanostructured material as functions of their microstructure. The numerical methodology uses representative volume elements (RVEs) in which the material microstructure, i.e., the grains and grain boundaries, is presented utilizing the three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi algorithm. The implementation of the 3D Voronoi particles was performed on the nanostructure investigation of ultrafine materials by SEM and TEM. Proper material properties for the grain interiors (GI) and grain boundaries (GB) were computed using the Hall-Petch equation and a dislocation-based analytical approach, respectively. The numerical outcomes show that the Young’s Modulus of nanostructured copper increased by increasing the crystallite volume fraction, while the yield strength increased by decreasing the grain size. The numerical predictions were strongly confirmed in opposition to finite element outcomes, experimental results from the open literature, and predictions from the rule of mixtures and the Mori-Tanaka analytical models.

We simulate the behaviour of suspensions of large-particle, non-Brownian, neutrally-buoyant spheres in a Newtonian liquid with a Galerkin, finite element, Navier–Stokes solver into which is incorporated a continuum constitutive relationship described by Phillips et al. (1992). This constitutive description couples a Newtonian stress/shear-rate relationship (where the local viscosity of the suspension is dependent on the local volume fraction of solids) with a shear-induced migration model of the suspended particles. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional (axisymmetric) model is benchmarked with a variety of single-phase and two-phase analytic solutions and experimental results. We describe new experimental results using nuclear magnetic resonance imaging to determine non-invasively the evolution of the solids-concentration profiles of initially well-mixed suspensions as they separate when subjected to slow flow between counter-rotating eccentric cylinders and to piston-driven flow in a pipe. We show good qualitative and quantitative agreement of the numerical predictions and the experimental measurements. These flows result in complex final distributions of the solids, causing rheological behaviour that cannot be accurately described with typical single-phase constitutive equations.

The current state of the art in coronary stent technology, tubular structures used to keep the lumen open, is mainly populated by metallic stents coated with certain drugs to increase biocompatibility, even though experimental biodegradable stents have appeared in the horizon. Biodegradable polymeric stent design necessitates accurate characterization of time dependent polymer material properties and mechanical behavior for analysis and optimization. This manuscript presents the process for evaluating material properties for biodegradable biocompatible polymeric composite poly(diol citrate) hydroxyapatite (POC-HA), approaches for identifying material models and three dimensional solid models for finite element analysis and fabrication of a stent. The developed material models were utilized in a nonlinear finite element analysis to evaluate the suitability of the POC-HA material for coronary stent application. In addition, the advantages of using femtosecond laser machining to fabricate the POC-HA stent are discussed showing a machined stent. The methodology presented with additional steps can be applied in the development of a biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric stents.

Two phase flows in pipelines are very common in industries for the oil transportations. The aim of our work is to observe the effect of oil volume fraction in the oil in water two phase flows. The study has been accomplished using a computational model which is based on a Finite Element Method (FEM) named Galerkin approximation. The velocity profiles and volume fractions are performed by numerical simulations and we have considered the COMSOL Multiphysics Software version 4.2a for our simulation. The computational domain is 8m in length and 0.05m in radius. The results show that the velocity of the mixture decreases as the oil volume fraction increases. It should be noted that if we gradually increase the volume fractions of oil, the fluid velocity also changes and the saturated level of the volume fraction is 22.3%.

The fractures after artificial steering fracturing appear in shades of curved surface. Aiming at the problem of steering fracture, in the paper, numerical simulation method under the condition of three-dimensional two-phase flow is presented based on finite element method. In this method, of steering fracture was achieved by adopting surface elements fractures and tetrahedron elements to describe formation. By numerical simulation, the change rule of oil and water production performance of steering fractures can be calculated, and then the steering fracture parameters can be optimized before fracturing. A new method was supplied for the numerical simulation of artificial fractured well.

A new finite element (FE) modeling method has been developed to investigate how the electrical-mechanical-thermal behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT)–reinforced polymer composites is affected by electron tunneling distances, volume fraction, and physically realistic tube aspect ratios. A representative CNT polymer composite conductive path was chosen from a percolation analysis to establish the three-dimensional (3D) computational finite-element (FE) approach. A specialized Maxwell FE formulation with a Fermi-based tunneling resistance was then used to obtain current density evolution for different CNT/polymer dispersions and tunneling distances. Analyses based on thermoelectrical and electrothermomechanical FE approaches were used to understand how CNT-epoxy composites behave under electrothermomechanical loading conditions.

Rutting is one of the well-recognized road surface distresses in asphalt concrete pavements that can affect the pavement service life and traffic safety. Previous studies have shown that the shear strength of asphalt concrete pavements is a fundamental property in resisting rutting. Laboratory investigation has shown that improving the shear strength of the asphalt concrete mix can reduce surface rutting by more than 30%, and the SUPERPAVE mix design method has acknowledged the importance of the shear resistance of asphalt mixes as a fundamental property in resisting deformation of the pavement. An in situ shear strength testing facility was developed at Carleton University, and a more advanced version of this facility is currently under development in cooperation with the Transportation Research Board and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. In using this facility, a circular area of the pavement surface is forced to rotate about a normal axis by applying a torque on a circular plate bonded to the surface. The pavement shear strength is then related to the maximum torque. This problem has been solved mathematically in the literature for a linear, homogeneous, and isotropic material. However, the models for other material properties are mathematically complicated and are not applicable to all cases of material properties. Therefore, developing a model that can accurately analyze the behaviour of asphalt concrete pavements during the in situ shear test has proven pivotal. This paper presents the development of a three-dimensional finite element model that can simulate the forces applied while measuring the shear strength of the asphalt concrete pavement. A comparison between the model results and those obtained from available analytical models and field measurements proved the accuracy of the developed model.Key words: shear strength, in situ testing, finite element, asphalt, pavement, modelling.

Abstract Due to high stiffness/weight ratio, composite materials are widely used in aerospace applications such as motor case of rockets which can be regarded as a pressure vessel. The most commonly used method to manufacture pressure vessels is the wet filament winding. However, the mechanical performance of a filament wound pressure vessel directly depends on the manufacturing process, manufacturing site environmental condition, and material properties of matrix and fiber. The designed pressure vessel may not be manufactured because of the mentioned issues. Therefore, manufacturing of filament wound composite structures are based on manufacturing experience and experiment. In this study, effects of layer-by-layer thickness and fiber volume fraction variation due to manufacturing process on the mechanical performance were investigated for filament wound pressure vessel with unequal dome openings. First, the finite element model was created for designed thickness dimensions and constant material properties for all layers. Then, the model was updated. The updated finite element model considered the thickness of each layer separately and variation of fiber volume fraction between the layers. Effects of the thickness and fiber volume fraction on the stress distribution along the motor axial direction were shown. Also hydrostatic pressurization tests were performed to verify finite element analysis in terms of fiber direction strain through the motor case outer surface. Important aspects of analyzing a filament wound pressure vessel were addressed for designers.

Abstract In this study, numerical simulation of formation of droplet within T-shaped microchannel is investigated. Three-dimensional, transient and two-phase numerical solution for four different microchannels with different stepping positions in the flow path was performed. Various parameters such as volume fraction, Nusselt number, pressure, Reynolds number, and temperature are discussed. The results show that the location of stepped barriers in the flow path affects the process of droplet formation, its number and size in the microchannel and should be considered as an important factor in determining the fluid behavior in the microchannel. It was observed that by placing half of the step at the entrance and the other half after the entrance, the continuous phase (S3 mode) was formed in 37.5 s compared to the other modes. The droplets were also smaller in size and more in numbers. It was also observed that the maximum value for the Nusselt number was obtained for the S2 mode where the step was located just above the discrete-phase entrance. In addition, the pressure at the inlet was higher and the flow velocity increased after the step and its pressure decreased, and continued to decrease due to frictional path.

Abstract In pursuit of research to create a synthetic tissue scaffold by a micropunching process, material properties of polycaprolactone (PCL) in liquid nitrogen were determined experimentally and used for finite element modeling of cryogenic micropunching process. Specimens were prepared using injection molding and tested under compression to determine the stress–strain relationship of PCL below its glass transition temperature. Cryogenic conditions were maintained by keeping the PCL specimens submerged in liquid nitrogen throughout the loading cycle. Specimens of two different aspect ratios were used for testing. Yield strength, strength coefficient, and strain hardening exponent were determined for different specimen aspect ratios and extrapolated for the case with zero diameter to length ratio. Material properties were also determined at room temperature and compared against results available in the literature. Results demonstrate that PCL behaves in a brittle manner at cryogenic temperatures with more than ten times increase in Young's modulus from its value at room temperature. The results were used to predict punching forces for the design of microscale hole punching dies and for validation of a microscale hole punching model that was created with a commercially available finite element software package, deform 3D. The three parameters, yield strength, strength coefficient, and strain hardening exponent, used in Ludwik's equation to model flow stress of PCL in deform 3D were determined to be 94.8 MPa, 210 MPa, and 0.54, respectively. The predicted peak punching force from finite element simulations matched with experimentally determined punching force results.

Abstract In this investigation, a finite element (FE) model was developed to study the third body effects on the fretting wear of Hertzian contacts in the partial slip regime. An FE three-dimensional Hertzian point contact model operating in the presence of spherical third bodies was developed. Both first bodies and third bodies were modeled as elastic–plastic materials. The effect of the third body particles on contact stresses and stick-slip behavior was investigated. The influence of the number of third body particles and material properties including modulus of elasticity, hardening modulus, and yield strength were analyzed. Fretting loops in the presence and absence of wear particles were compared, and the relation between the number of cycles and the hardening process was evaluated. The results indicated that by increasing the number of particles in contact, more load was carried by the wear particles which affect the wear-rate of the material. In addition, due to the high plastic deformation of the debris, the wear particles deformed and took a platelet shape. Local stick-slip behavior over the third body particles was also observed. The results of having wear debris with different material properties than the first bodies indicated that harder wear particles have a higher contact pressure and lower slip at the location of particles which affects the wear-rate.
