Development of paper industry has been restricted by resources, energy and environment deeply; further reducing energy consumption becomes an urgent problem to be solved. In this paper, the calculating model of steam consumption in bleaching process is established under the premise of ensuring product quality and controlling bleaching cost. Then, an optimization model for minimizing steam consumption is constructed. Compared with before optimization, the steam consumption of the optimized bleaching system reduced by 19.48% (0.5014 t/adt) at a loss of 0.11% brightness (0.1 ISO%) and 5.17% viscosity (33 mL/g). The amount of chemicals should be increased to ensure the quality of the pulp while decreasing the bleaching temperature to reduce steam consumption, the cost of bleaching pulp has decreased by 1.62% (3.19 USD/adt) after optimization. The verification experiments showed all the pulp quality indices can meet the requirements of bleached pulp.

Conventional methods for assessing the quality of components mass produced using injection molding are expensive and time-consuming or involve imprecise statistical process control parameters. A suitable alternative would be to employ machine learning to classify the quality of parts by using quality indices and quality grading. In this study, we used a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network along with a few quality indices to accurately predict the quality of “qualified” and “unqualified” geometric shapes of a finished product. These quality indices, which exhibited a strong correlation with part quality, were extracted from pressure curves and input into the MLP model for learning and prediction. By filtering outliers from the input data and converting the measured quality into quality grades used as output data, we increased the prediction accuracy of the MLP model and classified the quality of finished parts into various quality levels. The MLP model may misjudge datapoints in the “to-be-confirmed” area, which is located between the “qualified” and “unqualified” areas. We classified the “to-be-confirmed” area, and only the quality of products in this area were evaluated further, which reduced the cost of quality control considerably. An integrated circuit tray was manufactured to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Stamp charging coking can use weakly coking coal effectively, which can cut the cost for iron and steel enterprises. However, the quality of stamp charging coke has been debated due to lower CSR index. In this paper, the correlation between blend coking properties and quality indices of stamp charging coke is given out through statistical analysis of data from coking production, the effect of blend properties and stamping on the properties of stamp charging coke is estimated through microstructure, and the strength after reaction of stamp charging coke is evaluated through temperature dependence of reacted coke strength and BF smelting. The results show that the stamping permits to use the weakly coking blend with lower G index without impairing the M10 and M40 indices, but the CSR index is decreased. Meanwhile, the reason that the stamp charging coke with lower CSR index can also be used smoothly in BF is presented. The present works are significant to guide the blending of increasing weakly coking coal and evaluate reasonably the quality of stamp charging cokes.

Papermaking in Malaysia is basically based on recycled (secondary) fibers which are sourced from various parts of the world with prices depending on the quality of the fibers procured. The costs of paper production could possibly be reduced by using local fibers as partial replacement provided that the strength requirements are not compromised; and one such type is the oil palm fibers which are obtained as the by-product of the palm oil industry. This paper reports the use of the oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber as a partial substitute in the production of corrugating medium. Both unbleached and totally chlorine free (TCF) bleached OPEFB pulps were mixed in different ratios with high quality recycled pulps which had been mechanically and chemically treated. Burst strength results indicate as high as 70% recycled pulp can be replaced by OPEFB pulps yet still having strength properties that are comparable with the industrial produced corrugating medium. Although the effect of bleached pulp is significant at high addition levels of more than 70%, the cost-energy balance will not be effective to use these bleached fibers, and furthermore the utilization of unbleached pulps also gave the same desired results. The use of the underutilized OPEFB fibers for replacement of imported recycled fibers without compromising the paper strength qualities could help the Malaysian paper industry in their quest for finding fiber alternatives.

This research aims to investigate the effect of xylanase pretreatment on elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching process, the quality of bleached pulp and wastewater characteristics. At first, xylanase was produced from Bacillus circulans using solid-phase fermentation and then used for pre- bleaching of Acacia mangium and commercial pulp (Kappa Number of 12-16) and then bleached with D0ED1D2 bleaching sequences. The bleached pulp obtained was tested for physical and optical properties; COD and AOX content of wastewater generated were tested as well. The results showed that the xylanase pretreatment increase the brightness, physical strength (tensile and bursting index) of Acacia mangium and commercial pulp at xylanase dose of 0.5 kg/ton. The xylanase decrease the extractive content of Acacia mangium pulp but increase it at a commercial pulp. In contrary, the dirt content of Acacia mangium pulp was increase while it was decrease at a commercial pulp. These were obtained at a dose of xylanase of 0.5 kg/ton. The addition of xylanase on prebleaching process could increase the COD value but decrease significantly the AOX content in effluent.

This paper is an attempt to assess if the manufacturing process of paper machine is in statistical control thereby improving the quality of paper being produced in a paper industry at the time of process itself. Quality is the foremost criteria for achieving the business target. Therefore, emphasis was made on controlling the quality of paper at the time of manufacturing process itself, rather than checking the finished lots at a later time.  This control on quality will help the industry deduct the small shift in the process parameters and modify the operating characteristics at the time of production itself rather than receiving complaints from customers at a later stage.  This paper describes controlling quality at the time of manufacture itself and helps the industry to concentrate on quality at low cost. The researcher has collected primary data at a leading paper industry during October, 2019.  Though X-bar and Range charges were primarily used, CUSUM charts were used to sense the minor shifts in manufacturing process, to explore the possibility of adjusting process parameters during manufacture of paper.

The quality of the software can be measured by its return on investment. Factors which may affect the return on investment (ROI) is the tangible factors (such as the cost) dan intangible factors (such as the impact of software to the users or stakeholder). The factor of the software itself are assessed through reviewing, testing, process audit, and performance of software. This paper discusses the consideration of return on investment (ROI) assessment criteria derived from the software and its users. These criteria indicate that the approach may support a rational consideration of all relevant criteria when evaluating software, and shows examples of actual return on investment models. Conducted an analysis of the assessment criteria that affect the return on investment if these criteria have a disproportionate effort that resulted in a return on investment of a software decreased. The public has ever-rising expectations for the environmental quality of the North Sea and hence of everreducing anthropogenic inputs; by implication society must be willing to accept the cost of reduced contamination. The chemical industry accepts that it has an important part to play in meeting these expectations, but it is essential that proper scientific consideration is given to the potential transfer of contamination from one medium to another before changes are made. A strategy for North Sea protection is put forward as a set of seven principles that must govern the management decisions that are made. Some areas of uncertainty are identified as important research targets. It is concluded that although there have been many improvements over the last two decades, there is more to be done. A systematic and less emotive approach is required to continue the improvement process.
