In the last few years, because of the increasing growth of the Internet, general-purpose clients have achieved a high level of popularity for static consultation of text and pictures. This is the case of the World Wide Web (i.e., the Web browsers). Using a hypertext system, Web users can select and read in their computers information from all around the world, with no other requirement than an Internet connection and a navigation program. For a long time, the information available on the Internet has been series of written texts and 2D pictures (i.e., static information). This sort of information suited many publications, but it was highly unsatisfactory for others, like those related to objects of art, where real volume, and interactivity with the user, are of great importance. Here, the possibility of including 3D information in Web pages makes real sense.

Current interest in the use of Communications and Information Technology (C&IT) in higher education and other settings is at a high level (for example, Framework V: Towards a User-Friendly Information Society; the ESRC Programme PACCIT) and while universities - in response to the Dearing Report - begin to exercise effort in restructuring course delivery methods to take advantage of the technology, there is a danger that the issue of the changes in the social dynamics that are a direct consequence of the transition from actual space to virtual space will be overlooked. Some work has been undertaken in this area (notably Rheingold, 1991; Cook, 1995; McConnell, Hardy and Hodgson, 1996) but there is need for additional research if we are to identify a clearer sense of how effective online learning might manifest itself.DOI:10.1080/0968776010090207

The chapter discusses the use of business strategies for pure Internet firms. It separates the strategic choices and directions used for idea generation, during start-up, and beyond business or brand establishment. Corroborating much of the literature, it argues that traditional notions of strategy might be inappropriate for some dotcom firms due to the high level of complexity, speed of change and competitiveness characteristic of the Internet environment. As has been observed by research, idea generation on the Internet can involve prospecting and reacting quickly to markets to a greater extent than amongst traditional businesses. Likewise, start-up strategies often appear to involve flexibility and an openness to strategic change in response to the fast dynamic nature of the online market. The chapter suggests alternative strategy models that might be useful in our understanding of Internet business creation and development.

The subject of the article directly fits into the process of broadly understood security. The author indicates the opportunities and threats in the social space of the Internet of human functioning. The aim of the article is to analyze the basic human threats while experiencing freedom and trust in the virtual space. The author poses the question: Should the Internet be a space of unlimited freedom? Freedom seems to be not only an immanent but also a constitutive feature of the virtual space in which the Internet functions. It should be emphasized that the issues are discussed from very different perspectives and in processes as well as social relations. The article consists of three parts. In the first one the author presented the issues of cyberspace development, whose specific features favor the development of the virtual community. Next, she defined the most important areas concerning the culture of freedom and the consent of human education as a way of promoting its independence in the social space of the Internet. The last part of the publication contains the most important theses regarding threats related to human personal safety in cyberspace.

This paper dwells on the phenomenon of escapism and suggests regarding it as a natural human need that has not only a negative, but also a productive form. The author analyses the idea of escapism as a human escape from natural threats by creating culture and “second nature” (proposed by the cultural geographer Yi-Fu Tuan). It is shown that, indeed, even those human societies that are closest to nature cannot survive without culture and technologies. Further, it is demonstrated that in the late 18th – early 19th centuries because of scientific and industrial revolutions the cultural trend of Romanticism rejects the technogenic society and rationality. Instead, it takes interest in nature as reflecting the emotional, intuitive components of the human spirit. Wild natural landscapes, to which a romanticist wishes to escape, are attractive not just in themselves, but because their contemplation becomes a way for a person to better understand his/her inner world. Wild nature is also appealing to a romanticist because being alone with it a person is free from the pressure of the society that is turning into a mass society with high level of bureaucracy. With the onset of the Internet era, many people tend at first to escape to the virtual world with no limitations, but over time the Internet becomes an integral part of the social life of all people, thus losing its escapist appeal. On the contrary, another wish emerges: to escape from the Internet (which can be regarded as “third nature”) and from the total social control exercised by other Internet users back to the “real” – offline – world. Thus, a conclusion is drawn that escapism is not provoked just by natural threats or social pressure: a person wishes to escape not from nature or culture, but from the situation where he/she feels bad to a better situation, and while searching for such a place a person can act as a creative force that changes the world.
