The research possibilities of the method of narrative analysis in the study of large social groups on a given topic were considered, the parameters of the external and internal image of the Udmurt State University and the Institute of Social Communications were determined, on the basis of narrative essays / individual biographies, idealtypical / behavioral scenarios of students were identified as stable, repeating in a certain sequence ways of categorizing ideas about the image of the university in everyday life. The sample consisted of students (N=378, 25 % - men) Institute of Social Communications of the Udmurt State University (bachelor's degree, full-time education, 2-4 courses) in all areas of study (Advertising and public relations, Tourism, Hotel business, Organization of work with youth, Cultural Studies). The experience of narrative analysis has confirmed the validity of the ideas that in order to conduct narrative and analytical studies of large social groups, it is necessary to collect data with direct reference to the carriers of the corresponding group identity. Based on the identified behavioral scenarios of students, it is possible to assess the image of an educational institution with a forecast of its formation.

PurposeA major justification for the state subsidy of university education at public institutions (and, in some countries, of private universities too) is the economic and social benefits accruing to society as whole from a significantly university-educated workforce and citizenship. Based upon a broad range of research findings, a particular societal benefit emanating from higher education relates to good citizenship: that it leads to more open mindedness and tolerant political attitudes. We examined these issues using a representative sample of students from Israeli universities to clarify the extent to which these outcomes would be paralleled in the Israeli setting, where the university experience differs markedly from that found typically in the West.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a comparison of political tolerance levels between first- and final-year students enrolled in regular undergraduate study programs (of four days a week or more). However since a change in tolerance is likely to be contingent also on the amount of time that the student spends on campus during the study year, we introduce, as a control group, students enrolled in compressed study programs (of three days a week or less) and compare changes in their tolerance levels with tolerance changes of students enrolled in regular programs. Research questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate students at three universities from the three major districts in Israel–north, south and center. The achieved sample size was 329 students.FindingsUsing Difference-in-Differences techniques, we looked for any changes in students' general political tolerance, over the course of their studies. Surprisingly, we found no such effect on political tolerance attitudes. Israeli students are older and often married and though nominally full-time students, they often hold down a full-time job. Thus they come and go to attend lectures but do not otherwise spend much time on campus. Given the somewhat perfunctory nature of the university experience for most Israeli students, it does not to lead to more open-minded and tolerant political attitudes.Practical implicationsSome broader, practical applications of the research, beyond the Israeli case, are presented, particularly related to distance learning and to the impact of COVID-19. Attention is given to more recent “Cancel culture” developments on university campuses.Originality/valueThe results have wider implications, to other university setting in other countries. Changes in political attitudes may occur in university settings where campus life is well developed, with opportunities for student interaction, formally in extra-curricular events or through social mixing outside the lecture hall. Where the university experience is more minimally confined to attendance at lectures these desirable outcomes may not be forth coming. These findings are relevant to other university frameworks where campus attendance is marginal, such as in open university education and, even more explicitly, in purely internet-based higher education study.

The primary task of education is the formation of thinking as an end in itself which creates opportunities for individuals to exert significant influence on social phenomena and processes using modern knowledge and the latest technologies. The ability of a person to successfully socialize is unthinkable without intellectualization which must be achieved in the educational process. The author of the article developed a questionnaire and conducted a survey of the first-year full-time postgraduates (master’s degrees) at Kherson State University (187 people were interviewed, which is 44% of the total amount in the 2019–2020 academic year). Most degree-seeking students continue their studies in the bachelor’s degree program. However, the survey showed that the main topics of the course “Fundamentals of Scientific Knowledge”, which was studied for bachelor’s degree programmes, are not sufficiently captured due to the small amount of class hours. For many postgraduates (master’s degrees) the relationship between the philosophical approaches themselves, general scientific and special scientific methods, as well as the content of the latest methodological principles, turned out to be incomprehensible. It is a matter of concern that many degree-seeking students were not able to answer the question about the results they obtained in scientific work through the use of the methods they specified. This indicates a lack of connection between methodological theory and scientific practice in the educational process. It was also found that the majority of postgraduates (master’s degrees) do not associate their future professional activities with scientific research. This circumstance obliges teachers to strengthen their responsibility for forming a decent attitude of degree-seeking students to science as a social and professional institution, as well as to theoretical thought as the basis of any highly professional activity. It is necessary to find an optimal collegial solution (exclusive at each university) to increase the “specific weight” of the methodological component in the curriculum documents of different branches of education, as well as regarding modern forms of improving the level of methodological competences of teachers of various theoretical disciplines.

The current climate of managed care has sparked efforts to reduce costs in patient care. In many cases, this has resulted in more efficient methods of patient management: chronic disease management in an outpatient setting appears to be one such success story. For critical care nurses interested in working beyond the boundaries of a traditional ICU, chronic disease management clinics represent an alternative environment in which they may apply their skills. Nancy Brass-Mynderse, RN, MSN, CCRN, a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) with 18 years of experience in critical care, was instrumental in development of the Scripps Health Chronic Disease Clinic at Green Hospital of Scripps Clinic, San Diego, Calif. Brass-Mynderse currently supervises the operation of the clinic, along with Omana Kaliangara, RN, MSN, CFNP, a nurse practitioner. Brass-Mynderse received her bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz, and her master's degree from San Diego State University. She recently obtained her family nurse practitioner certificate from California State University, Dominguez Hills, Calif. Kaliangara received her bachelor's degree from San Jose State University, San Jose, Calif, and her nurse practitioner certificate from the University of California, San Francisco, Calif. After working in family medicine and a diabetic clinic, Kaliangara developed an interest in the management of chronic diseases. In an interview with CRITICAL CARE NURSE in September, Brass-Mynderse and Kaliangara took time to discuss the development and operation of the clinic, and to recount some of their success stories.
