The cause of metabolic syndrome is still not known for sure, but it is suspected that the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome is associated with insulin resistance and central obesity. Researchers have attempted to evaluate insulin resistance using various serum lipid concentration ratio. This study was to observe the association between insulin resistance and lipid profile ratio using HOMA-IR in metabolic syndrome patients. This study was a cross-sectional that was conducted in Inpatient and Outpatient Adam Malik Hospital during March 2016 - April 2016. Subjects were patients with metabolic syndrome criteria according to the International Diabetic Federation 2005. All samples were examined for their waist circumference, weight, height, blood pressure, insulin, serum glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Triglycerides. Among sixty-six patients in the study 40 (60.6%) were male and 26 (39.4%) female. In this study, there was a significant correlation between HOMA-IR with CT/HDL ratio (r: 0.244 p <0.05); and there was no correlated HOMA-IR, and TG/HDL ratio (r: 0.086 p > 0.05) and there was no correlation between HOMA-IR and LDL/HDL (r: 0.336 p > 0.05). There was a significant relationship between insulin resistance and ratio CT/HDL

Introduction: Atherogenic lipid profile is an important risk factor in development of atherosclerosis in menopausal women. High level of small dense LDL, that is more susceptible to oxidation, and high levels of inflammatory markers are also associated with an increased risk for development of atherosclerosis. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between lipid profile, oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as inflammatory reaction in healthy women dependent on age and menopause. Method. The study included a group of clinically healthy women (total of 97 women). Group 1: 15 women younger than 45 years; group 2: 62 women between 46 and 55 years, group 3: 20 women between 56 and 65 years, group of menopausal women (73) and group of premenopausal women (24). None of the women had history of obesity, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular, ischaemic heart disease, and hypertension. Lipid profiles were measured by enzymatic methods. Ox-LDL was measured by using a specific monoclonal antibody, mAb4E6. CRP was measured using hemiluminiscent methods (Immulite-DPC). Results. Results showed significantly higher levels of total cholesterol (p<0.01) and LDL cholesterol (p<0.01) in women over 56 years compared with women younger than 45 years. We also found similar results in menopausal women. Levels of Ox-LDL (p<0.05) and CRP (p<0.01) showed significantly higher levels in women over 56 years. In menopausal women, we found significantly higher levels of CRP (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the levels of oxLDL between the menopausal and premenopausal women. Levels of triglycerides and HDL cholesterol were not different among groups. We found that 51% women had levels of HDL cholesterol lower than 1.3 mmol/L. In all groups of women, we found positive correlation among age, Ox-LDL (p<0.01) and CRP (p<0.01). Ox-LDL also positively correlated with CRP (p<0.01). Conclusion. In healthy women older than 56 as in menopausal women, we found significantly higher levels of LDL cholesterol and inflammatory markers. These results suggest that strategies of primary prevention in women are needed to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Background: Overt and subclinical hypothyroidism, affects metabolism of lipids particularly that of cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and triglyceride. Hypercholesterolemia predisposes to atherosclerosis and thereby increases cardiovascular risks. Methods: Hundred patients of primary  hypothyroidism of age more than 15 yrs were included. Five milliliters of venous blood was drawn in fasting state and serum obtained; thyroid function test (TFT) and fasting lipid profile were performed. Based on the TFT, patients were categorized as sub clinical or overt hypothyroidism. Clinical data, thyroid and lipid profiles obtained were analyzed and compared using statistical methods. Results: Seventy patients were females and thirty were males in the ratio of 2.3:1. Most common age group was 51-60years followed by 41-50years. Most common symptom was generalised weakness followed by weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, hair loss, paraesthesia’s. Most common signs were myxoedema, delayed ankle reflex relaxation, dry and  coarse skin, bradycardia, non-pitting peripheral edema, madarosis, pallor, goiter. Patients with Overt hypothyroidism had significantly higher serum levels of total cholesterol(249.1±31.7 mg/dl), Triglycerides (191.5±68.5 mg/dl) and LDL cholesterol(167.7±31 mg/dl) than the Subclinical hypothyroidism with total cholesterol(202±19.8),triglycerides(155.6±35) and LDL cholesterol(129±21.1) but HDL cholesterol  level remains normal in both overt  (44.0±4.7) and subclinical  (43.1±4.4)hypothyroidism respectively. Conclusions: Patients with Overt hypothyroidism had significantly higher levels of Total cholesterol, Triglycerides (TG) and LDL cholesterol than the Subclinical hypothyroidism but HDL cholesterol level remains normal in both. So, concomitant estimation of lipid profile in hypothyroidism patients is needed for early intervention and prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
