The objectives of this research were to find out the optimum dose and frequency of feeding regime to ensure the maximum growth of carp-seeds, Cyprinus carpio, reared in the backyard pond with recirculation system. The experiment was carried out in 2x3 factorial experimental design and the experimental units were designed in randomized block. Two factors were tested in this experiment; the first factor, dose of feeding, had three levels, 3%, 4% and 5% of the total body weight per day; and the second factor had 2 levels, 2 and 3 times per day. Hence there were 6 treatments were applied, and each treatment was triplicated. Each repetition represented group of fish with different weight. There were 18 experimental units, and each experimental unit was composed of 8 tested fish, therefore there were 144 tested fish, which were weighed at the beginning of the experiment and then every week during the 6 weeks period of the experiment. The weight data were converted into FCR, absolute, relative and daily growth rate, and were statistically analyzed using JMP statistic-program (SAS-institute). The results showed the absolute growth of fish at dose of 3% was significantly lower than that of fish at the dose of 4% and 5%, which was not significantly different. The relative and daily growth rate was not significantly affected by the different dose of feeding regime. There was no significant difference in FCR, absolute, relative and daily growth rate between fish fed 2 and 3 times per day. The best FCR, 1,46, was performed by fish fed 3% of the body weight per day, and this value was significantly different with that of the fish fed 4% or 5%. The results of this experiment suggest that, carp reared in backyard pond with recirculation system should be fed twice a day, with a dose of 3% of the body weight each day.

The research was aimed to find out the optimum dose of feeding regime to ensure the maximum growth of carp-seeds, Cyprinus carpio, reared in backyard pond with recirculation system. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Block Design with 3 different dose of feeding regimes as treatments, which were 3%, 4% and 5% of the total body weight per day. Each treatment was triplicate and each repetition functioned as group of fish with different weight. There were 3 groups which were, fish weighing 1.5–2.4 gram (Group-1), fish weighing 2.5 – 3.4 gram (Group-2) and fish weighing 3.5 – 4.8 gram (Group-3). Each experimental unit was composed of 8 tested fish, placed in a netting-cage bag measuring 60×30×60 cm (l×w×h) with a mesh-size of 4 mm. Each group was composed of 24 tested fish, hence there were 72 tested fish in total. Fish were fed twice a day at 07:00 and 17:00. Tested fish were weighed every week, and the fish weight data were converted into FCR, absolute, relative and daily growth rate. Data were statistically analyzed using JMP statistic-program. The results showed that, there was no significant difference in absolute, relative and daily growth rate among fish fed 3%, 4% and 5% of total body weight per day. The best FCR was performed by fish fed 3% of total body weight per day. Hence, this experiment result suggests that, carp reared in backyard pond with recirculation system should be fed with a dose of 3% of the total body weight each day, as fish might grow well and at the same time the amount of uneaten food, feces and metabolic wastes is minimized at this dose of feeding.

This experiment was conducted to determine the dietary zinc requirement of young giant gouramy. Five experimental diets were used in this experiment containing iso-nitrogenous and iso-energy with different levels of zinc (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg per kg). The initial means of body weight of body the fishes was 0.82 g per individual. The fishes were fed upon the diets at satiation, three times daily, for 12 weeks. The results indicated no zinc deficiency symptoms in this experiment. The daily growth rate, feed efficiency, survival rates and protein and lipid retention were not significantly different from all the diets. However, fish fed upon 25 mg Zn/kg diets produced the highest protein and total digestibility. The zinc contents of 25 mg Zn/kg diets gave the highest value in zinc accumulation in the bone, blood serum and eyes. The highest accumulation of the zinc in the liver occurred in 50 mg Zn/kg diets. There was increase in zinc content of the tissues after increasing levels of dietary zinc. Thus, Zn requirement for juvenile of giant gouramy was 25-50 mg/kg diets.

Keywords: Osphronemus gouramy, Zinc, diet

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of fish grading on the growth performance of common carp Cyprinus carpio cultivated in floating cages located in the Al-Mashab River northwest of Basrah. A total of 4896 fishes were transferred from storage cages to culture cages (3×4×2 m), and distributed at a rate of 816 fishes per cage with a culture density of 34 fishes/m3 into six cages, three of which were classified into large (GL), middle (GM) and small (GS) individuals, whereas three cages were left without grading (UG). The graded and ungraded cages were chosen depending on the standard deviation for each cage. The fishes were fed for both treatments on a standardized, locally made diet. The results of the study were evaluated according to the criteria for total weight gain (WG), daily growth rate and specific growth rate. In the first grading process, significant differences (P<0.05) were recorded between graded (GL) and ungraded in final weight and specific growth rate (SGR) but not in weight gain and daily growth rate (DGR), while in the second grading, significant differences (P<0.05) were recorded between graded (GL) and ungraded in final weight and weight gain but not in SGR and DGR. At the end of the second grading period, the daily and specific growth rate of graded fishes were ranged between 3.26-4.73 g/day and 0.22-0.46%/day, respectively, while for ungraded fishes there were 2.35 g/day and 0.23%/day, respectively. The survival rate (SR) was not different very much in all treatments and ranged between 94.34 to 95.49% in small graded and ungraded fishes, respectively. The study results recommend at least two grading processes should be established during the culture season in two or three months intervals.

ABSTRACTTwo pairs of uniformly treated identical twins were weighed four times daily for 16 days. In addition, daily growth rate was analysed for 10 pairs of identical twins kept on high and low planes of nutrition over a 16-week period.Identical twins fluctuated in body weight from hour to hour and day to day in a significantly more similar manner than did unrelated animals. The greater similarity found when all animals were uniformly treated still persisted when identical twins were placed on different planes of nutrition.

The growth of giant prawn is limited by a non elastic material called chitin, which is a limiting factor in its growth. Feed containing mineral is needed to improve its growth. One of the essential minerals is calcium. The function of calcium is essential in bone and soft tissue formations, acid balancing, and regulation processes in the body. Because of its benefits, the research on the calcium effect on giant prawn was conducted. The aims of this study was to know the effect of calcium on the growth rate of giant prawn juvenile. Test animals were juveniles of giant prawn with average weight of 56.0 ± 3.0 mg. Research design employed complete randomized design with five calcium mineral treatments as follows:1.0%, 3.0%, 5.0%, 7.0%, and 0.0% as control. Each treatment has three replications. The result showed that calcium affected the daily growth rate of giant prawn (P<0.05). The calcium dosage of 3.46% is the optimum level for giant prawn juvenile.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of carotenoid (marigold oleoresin) on growth, survival and total body carotenoid of Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio). The experiment was carried out in 12 fiber aquarium tanks of size 12"×6"×6"(20l capacity). Each tank was stocked with15 fishes of uniform size. The marigold oleoresin were as dietary supplement at levels 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 ppm/kg of the feed and designated as treatment T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively and diet without marigold oleoresin supplementationserved as a control (T0). The result of the experiment showed that there was significant difference found in absolute growth rate and specific growth rate of the fish (P >0.05). However, 180ppm marigold oleoresin fed fishes showed higher mean weight gain of 3.98±0.22g and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 2.81±0.04 than the other treatment groups. The body coloration and total carotenoid concentration of muscle tissue (30.16±0.60μg/g) was significantly higher in fish fed with 180 ppm marigold oleoresin diet. The study showed that incorporation of 180ppm of marigold oleoresin in diet was found better to enhance the growth and coloration in C. carpio.
