TITLE: Passion and exercise dependence in bodybuilding athletesABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: Study’s aim was to analyze the passion and exercise dependence in bodybuilding athletes. METHODS: This study has a descriptive correlational. Subjects were 35 athletes (25 men), practicing resistance training in Maringá (PR) gyms. The Passion Scale and Exercise Dependence Scale were used. Data analysis was performed through Mann-Whitney’s U, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman Correlation Coefficient tests (p0.05). RESULTS: Results revealed that the bodybuilding athletes were harmoniously motivated towards their sport, and they were classified as nondependent-symptomatic for their practice. It was noted that males seemed to spend more time dedicated to the physical exercise practice and that harmonious passion had an inverse correlation with the continuous dimension of exercise dependence. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that bodybuilding athletes practiced the sport in harmony with other daily activities, presenting joy and pleasure towards practice and, although nondependent, they presented dependence symptoms such as increased tolerance to training loads and tension when deprived from the exercise practice.

Employer rating platforms are an important source of information for potential candidates to collect and provide information about the employer. The information is beneficial and different to official company information. The research investigates the reasons to use employer rating platforms by individuals. Trust is important for the exchange of information and use of employer rating platforms. The analysis of empirical data obtained in survey has been done with indicators of central tendency or location. For empirical data analysis it used ANOVA, t-test and Spearman correlation coefficient to investigate the significance of differences in evaluations between demographic groups. The research has been done by a survey of 514 participants who are living in Germany. The research provides the result that the use of employer rating platforms depends on demographic factors. The main result is that people trust employer rating platforms. They are aware that they can be manipulated with the information at employer rating platforms.

The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of dependency on physical exercise in individual sportspeople and the relationship with body dissatisfaction and motivation. Two hundred and twenty-five triathletes, swimmers, cyclists, and athletics competitors aged 18 to 63 years old took part in the study, of which 145 were men (M = 35.57 ± 10.46 years) and 80 were women (M = 32.83 ± 10.31 years). The EDS-R (Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised) was used to study dependency on exercising, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) was used to study body dissatisfaction, the Behaviour Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-3) was used to determine the participants’ motivation and the BIAQ was used to analyse conducts of avoidance to body image. The obtained results show that 8.5% of the subjects have a risk of dependency on exercise and 18.2% tend to have corporal dissatisfaction, without meaningful differences in the kind of sport they practiced. However, there were important differences concerning the dependency on physical exercise (15% vs. 4.8%) and body dissatisfaction (31.1% vs. 11%) in relation to sex, with the higher percentages referring to women. Introjected regulation and the conduct of food restriction were predictor variables of the dependency on exercise and corporal dissatisfaction. Also, the number and duration of sessions; the age of the participants; the integrated, introjected, and external regulations surrounding social activities; and eating restraints could all predict dependence on physical exercise (DPE).

Abstract: The article presents a psychometric study of the Physical Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised (EDS-R) in Colombian gym users with the aim of analyzing its factorial structure, internal consistency, construct reliability and its convergent, discriminant and criterion validity. An instrumental research was carried out with the participation of 515 gym users (44.3 % men and 55.7 % women) aged between 18 and 58 years (Md = 25; RIQ = 21-30) from the city of Medellín. The Spanish version (Sicilia & González-Cutre, 2011) of the Physical Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised (EDS-R) (Downs, Hausenblas & Nigg, 2004) was analyzed. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were performed. Results: The original structure of the EDS-R showed adequate internal consistency and factorial validity, confirmed through the goodness-of-fit indices for the seven-dimensional model. Cronbach's alpha was .917 and the Guttman two-half coefficient was .924. The goodness-of-fit indices for the original version were: PCMIN/DF = 2.291; RMR = .091; GFI = .917; AGFI = .886; CFI = .951; RMSEA = .056 (90% CI = .049 - .063); PCLOSE = .093. However, the values for mean variance extracted, maximum shared variance and maximum reliability revealed difficulties with construct reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity. There were also no-good results when analyzing criterion validity. To analyze whether the data in the sample fit better to a different factor structure, a complementary exploratory factor analysis was performed that arrived at a five-factor model, with the same 21 items. However, the assessment of composite reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity yielded better results than the seven-factor model.

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the German version of the 21-item Exercise Dependence Scale (EDS-G), which was administered in a large representative German sample (N = 1,611). In order to examine convergent validity, we also asked participants to answer the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). To investigate the discriminant validity, clients of fitness centers (N = 129), sport students (N = 85), and medical students (N = 129) filled out the EDS-G. In this German population-based sample, the seven-factor structure suggested by the original authors as well as a higher-order model (7 + 1 factor model) were supported. The total EDS-G scale showed an excellent internal reliability and was positively related to the EDE-Q total and subscale scores. The EDS-G scores differentiated between samples with varying degrees of exercise. In summary, the results indicate that the EDS-G is a psychometrically sound and potentially valid brief measure for the assessment of exercise dependence symptoms.

Aims The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of C-reactive protein (CRP)-negative prosthetic joint infection (PJI) and evaluate the influence of the type of infecting organism on the CRP level. Patients and Methods A retrospective analysis of all PJIs affecting the hip or knee that were diagnosed in our institution between March 2013 and December 2016 was performed. A total of 215 patients were included. Their mean age was 71 years (sd 11) and there were 118 women (55%). The median serum CRP levels were calculated for various species of organism and for patients with acute postoperative, acute haematogenous, and chronic infections. These were compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test, adjusting for multiple comparisons with Dunn’s test. The correlation between the number of positive cultures and serum CRP levels was estimated using Spearman correlation coefficient. Results Preoperative CRP levels were normal (< 10 mg/l) in 77 patients (35.8%) with positive cultures. Low-virulent organisms were isolated in 66 PJIs (85.7%) with normal CRP levels. When grouping organisms by species, patients with an infection caused by Propionibacterium spp., coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), and Enterococcus faecalis had significantly lower median serum CRP levels (5.4 mg/l, 12.2 mg/l, and 23.7 mg/l, respectively), compared with those with infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. (194 mg/l and 89.3 mg/l, respectively; p < 0.001). Those with a chronic PJI had statistically lower median serum CRP levels (10.6 mg/l) than those with acute postoperative and acute haematogenous infections (83.7 mg/l and 149.4 mg/l, respectively; p < 0.001). There was a significant correlation between the number of positive cultures and serum CRP levels (Spearman correlation coefficient, 0.456; p < 0.001). Conclusion The CRP level alone is not accurate as a screening tool for PJI and may yield high false-negative rates, especially if the causative organism has low virulence. Aspiration of the joint should be used for the diagnosis of PJI in patients with a chronic painful arthroplasty, irrespective of CRP level. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2018;100-B:1482–86.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Excessive physical exercise combined with certain psychic and sociodemographic factors can lead to dependence. Objective: To examine which factors lead to the emergence of exercise dependence. Methods: Sample consisted of 103 men (mean age 27.3 years, SD 6.127) who performed exercises at gyms at least three times a week in the last year or more in Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Raska and Tutin, Serbia. Participants completed questionnaires and took appropriate tests. Results: Our results showed that there is no association between exercise dependence and financial status, number of siblings, level of education, family stability, health, and medication use among the interviewees. However, it was found that the degree of exercise dependence is associated with marital status and problems with the law. Regression analysis showed that body dysmorphia, body mass index and aggressiveness are better predictors of exercise dependence. Conclusion: People whose self-perception is dismorphic have lower self-esteem, and exercise in gyms to improve their physical appearance. If we consider other characteristics, such as unfavorable BMI, problems with the lаw and being single, it is hardly surprising these individuals cross the line between healthy exercise and exercise dependence. An important finding is that aggressiveness and exercise dependence are related to problems with the law due to aggression, and body dysmorphia.
The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of exercise dependence and athlete burnout and their relationship between them and among demographic and sport characteristics in 449 athletes, 320 males and 129 females (Age: M= 19.71, SD= 6.62). All of them replied the Spanish versions of Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised (EDS-R) and reduced version of Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). The results showed a risk of exercise dependence in 8.7% of the athletes, with statistically significant differences in age (a greater exercise dependence was found in athletes under the age of 18 years old), not in gender, sport dedication and type of sport. Regarding burnout, measured through its three dimensions, the data showed 4% for emotional/physical exhaustion (EFE) and 4.9% for sport devaluation (SD) and reduced sense of accomplishment (RSA). Men and team-sport athletes showed a greater RSA. Men and athletes over the age of 18 also showed more DS. As for sport dedication, participants who spent less time training had higher levels of RSA, whereas those who dedicated more time, had higher levels of EFE. Finally, the relationship between exercise dependence and burnout showed that all dimensions of burnout correlated positively with exercise dependence.
