Abstract: MMN, Newborn Baby Weight. During pregnancy food is required with good quality and quantity to meet the nutritional needs of mother and baby. The low nutritional status of pregnant women during pregnancy can lead to various adverse effects for mothers and infants, such as those born with Low Birth Weight (LBW). LBW babies have a 10 to 20 times greater chance of dying than babies born with enough birth weight. Multiple Micro Nutrient (MMN) contains 15 types of vitamins and minerals most important for pregnant women, including vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin, Vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin C, Fe , folic acid, Zink, Copper, Selenium, and Iodine. MMN is one of the nutrients to prevent the occurrence of anemia because in MMN there are factors forming Hemoglobin ie Fe, Vitamin B12 and folic acid. The availability of adequate hemoglobin makes the metabolic system work well. Lack of hemoglobin not only affects the health of the mother but also affects the health of the fetus it contains, including the growth of the fetal inhibition (such as weight, body length). The purpose of this study was to prove the effect of MMN on newborn weight in Pandes Klaten village. This type of research is arestrospective study with cross sectional design. The subjects of this study were BBL (newborn) whose mother consumed MMN during pregnancy. Different test sing Independent T-test to compare control group and treatment group. Significant value in this study was p <0.05. The results of this study were no significant difference between birth weight between control group and MMN treatment group (P = 0.879). In conclusion MMN has no significant effect on newborn weight gain.

Vitamin B9 (folic acid) and B12 (cobalamin) are essential vitamins that play roles in the process of hematopoiesis and maintaining the function of peripheral nerves. Therefore, these deficiencies may create a risk for peripheral neuropathy in beta-thalassemia major patients. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between vitamin B9 level, vitamin B12 level, and peripheral neuropathy in beta-thalassemia major children. It was an observational analytical study with a case-control design has been conducted at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung, Indonesia, in May–July 2019. There were 47 beta-thalassemia major children with peripheral neuropathy (case) and 41 healthy children (control). All subjects completed a general demographic questionnaire, underwent neurological examination, and were tested for vitamin B9 and B12 serum levels. Data were then analyzed using the unpaired t test to compare the vitamin levels between both groups and Spearman’s rank correlation test to investigate the correlation between vitamin levels and the number of affected nerves in the case group. Comparison of folic acid levels in the case group (21.52±6.22 ng/mL) and the control group (23.81±7.51 ng/mL) showed no significant difference (p=0.19). In contrast, cobalamin in the case group (288.57±168.61 ng/mL) and the control group (385.95±197.48 ng/mL) showed a significant difference (p=0.01). In addition, there was a moderate correlation (p=0.004, r=0.41) between folic acid level and the number of motoric nerves affected in the case group. In conclusion, cobalamin level correlates with peripheral neuropathy in beta-thalassemia major patients, and folic acid level correlates with the number of affected nerves, especially motoric nerves. HUBUNGAN ANTARA VITAMIN B9 (ASAM FOLAT), VITAMIN B12 (KOBALAMIN), DAN NEUROPATI PERIFER PADA ANAK DENGAN TALASEMIA BETA MAYORVitamin B9 (asam folat) dan B12 (kobalamin) merupakan vitamin esensial yang berperan dalam proses hematopoiesis dan menjaga fungsi saraf tepi. Defisiensi vitamin ini dapat menimbulkan risiko neuropati perifer pada pasien talasemia beta mayor. Tujuan penelitian ini mengetahui hubungan antara kadar vitamin B9, vitamin B12, dan neuropati perifer pada anak talasemia beta mayor. Metode penelitian ini adalah analitik observasional dengan rancangan studi kasus kontrol yang dilakukan di RSUP Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung, Indonesia pada Mei–Juli 2019. Terdapat 47 anak talasemia beta mayor dengan neuropati perifer (kelompok kasus) dan 41 anak sehat (kelompok kontrol). Seluruh subjek penelitian mengisi kuesioner demografi umum, menjalani pemeriksaan fisis neurologis, serta dilakukan tes kadar vitamin B9 dan B12 serum. Uji t test tidak berpasangan digunakan untuk membandingkan kadar vitamin pada kedua kelompok dan uji korelasi Spearman untuk membandingkan kadar kedua vitamin tersebut dengan jumlah saraf yang terkena pada kelompok kasus. Perbandingan kadar asam folat kelompok kasus (21,52±6,22 ng/mL) dan kelompok kontrol (23,81±7,51 ng/mL) menunjukkan perbedaan yang tidak bermakna (p=0,19), sedangkan perbandingan kadar kobalamin kelompok kasus (288,57±168,61 ng/mL) dan kelompok kontrol (385,95±197,48 ng/mL) menunjukkan perbedaan yang bermakna (p=0,01). Selain itu, terdapat korelasi sedang (p=0,004; r=0,41) antara kadar asam folat dam jumlah saraf motorik yang terkena pada kelompok kasus. Kesimpulan, kadar kobalamin berhubungan dengan neuropati perifer pada penderita talasemia beta mayor dan kadar asam folat berhubungan dengan jumlah saraf yang terkena, terutama saraf motorik.

Background and objectives: Although laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is effective for obesity management, postoperative vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency is of major concern. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the levels of B12 and its related functional biomarkers, namely, total homocysteine (tHcy), methylmalonic acid (MMA), folate, methylcitric acid (MCA), and hemoglobin (Hb), in one-year postoperative LSG patients and matched controls. Materials and Methods: Plasma B12, tHcy, MMA, folate, and MCA were measured in matched controls (n = 66) and patients (n = 71) using validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry techniques and protocols in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Results: The median B12 concentration in patients (177 pmol/L) was significantly lower (p < 0.001) than in the controls (334.7 pmol/L). The tHcy and MMA levels were significantly increased (p < 0.001 and p = 0.011, respectively) and folate levels were significantly decreased (p = 0.001) in the LSG patients compared to the controls. Interestingly, no significant difference in MCA levels were observed between the two groups. The levels of tHcy and MMA were concomitantly increased with the decreased folate levels in postoperative LSG patients when compared with the controls. The Hb levels were significantly lower in males and females in the patient group compared with those in the control group, respectively (p = 0.005 and p = 0.043). Conclusions: This is the first report of serum levels of B12 and its functional biomarkers in postoperative LSG patients among a local population from the UAE. Our findings revealed significant alterations of the B12 biomarkers, total B12, MMA, and tHcy in one-year postoperative LSG patients.

The birth weight (BW) are utilized as indicators of the healthy and term newborns. Factor that affects the weight of a newborn are micronutrient intake and fundal height. Folic acid and iron (Fe) were associated with newborn birth weight. Fundal height in <em>centimeters</em> (cm) is the same as the gestational age of the week, the fundal height that is not in accordance with the gestational age is leading to stunted fetal growth. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between intake of folic acid, iron (Fe) and fundal height with newborn birth weight. This research method was an analytic observational using a <em>cross-sectional</em> approach. The sample in this study were 114 pregnant women living in Yogyakarta. Statistical test results proved a significant relationship between the intake of folic acid and iron (Fe) with the newborn birth weight (p &lt; 0.05). There was a significant relationship between the fundal height with the newborn birth weight (p &lt; 0.05). The concludes of this study, pregnant women with adequate folic acid intake, adequate iron intake and normal fundal height tended to give birth newborns with normal birth weight.

Background & objective: To find the association between serum vitamin B12 and food behavior of the pregnant women and its influence on perinatal outcome. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka between June 2012 to July 2013. A total of 102 uncomplicated pregnant women attending at the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department of BSMMU, Dhaka were the study population. Plasma vitamin B12 was measured by Abbott Axsym System using a Enzyme Immuno Assay Technique with the blood collected in a plain test tube. A serum vitamin B12 level of < 200 pg/mL was considered as low serum vitamin B12 level. The outcome variables were birth weight, small-for-date, neural tube defects and other congenital malformations. Result: The selected pregnant women were housewife (74.5%) from low socioeconomic strata. They were generally urban resident (90.2%) with mean age being 26.4 years. In terms of education 17.6% were primary level, 30.4% SSC level, 31.4% HSC level and 20.6% graduate and higher level educated. Majority (90.2%) was urban resident with average monthly family income being Taka 29460. One-third (33.3%) was overweight and 6.9% obese. Two-thirds (66.7%) were at 37-39 weeks of gestation and nullipara. More than 60% received ANC (antenatal care) aregularly. Over one-third (35.3%) had low serum vitamin B12 (< 200 pg/mL). The food behaviour of the women was found to be associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. The pregnant women with low serum vitamin B12 (< 200 pg/ml) had significantly lower weekly consumption of fishes and eggs which are the rich source of vitamin B12. The weekly fish, eggs and amount of milk consumed by the pregnant women with low serum vitamin B12 were much lower than those consumed by the pregnant women with normal serum vitamin B12. The pregnant women with low serum vitamin B12 were more likely to carry a higher risk of adverse perinatal outcome. The incidences of low-birth weight and small-for-dates were staggeringly higher in women with low serum vitamin B12 (33.3% and 27.8% respectively) compared to those in women with normal serum vitamin B12. Conclusion: The study concluded that pregnant women with low serum vitamin B12 are accustomed to taking low fish and eggs in their daily diet compared to those who have normal serum vitamin B12. The incidence of low birth weight and small-for-date babies are more prevalent in the pregnant women with subclinical deficiency of vitamin B12. Ibrahim Card Med J 2017; 7 (1&2): 84-91

Pregnant women are prone to maternal anemia that is caused by iron, folic acid, vitamins B2, B12, A, and C deficiency and may serve as causative factors that aggravate anemia. Concerning the problem, this clinical investigation determined the effect of antianemia supplementation and its combination with vitamin C on hemoglobin levels during pregnancy. This study is a quasi-experimental involving 34 patients who consumed antianemia supplements with or without vitamin C. The treatment group was given a combination of antianemia supplement Fe Fumarate 180 mg-Folic Acid 400 mcg and vitamin C 100 mg. The positive-control group was administrated with antianemia supplement Fe Fumarate 180 mg-Folic Acid 400 mcg. After 28 days, blood samples were taken to measure the hemoglobin levels. The hemoglobin levels were found to have a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between that group receiving a combination of antianemia-vitamin C and the other group administered with antianemia alone.

Family economic status towards the inability of households in eating conditions that will affect the nutritional status of the pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between intake of folic acid, iron (Fe) and family economic status with birth weight. This research method was an analytic observational using a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study were 114 pregnant women living in Yogyakarta. The data collected, subject characteristic, intake of folic acid and iron and the birth weight. Data analysis used the Fisher exact test with p value <0.05. Statistical test results proved a significant relationship between the intake of folic acid and iron (Fe) with the birth weight (p<0.05). There was no significant relationship between economic status and the birth weight (p>0.05). Pregnant women with adequate folic acid intake, iron intake tended to give birth with normal birth weight. While a good economic status does not necessarily affect the weight of newborns.

Several biological factors, particularly haematological, are physiologically altered during normal pregnancy. Biologists and doctors who are aware of these changes in the maternal body can screen for potential abnormalities. The aim of this research is to find healthy pregnant women's reference values. This was a cross-sectional research of pregnant women who attended an antenatal clinic at Sree Balaji Medical College, with anaemic and non-anemic pregnant women. Pregnant women were categorized into three groups -Group I - First Trimester (50 cases); Group II - Second Trimester (50 cases) and Group III - Third Trimester (72 cases) while non­ pregnant women formed the fourth group (30 cases). A statistically significant difference between the pregnant women and control group was noted (p < 0.05) for all the hematological parameters: red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, leukocytes, neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets and mean platelet volume. The present study provides additional baseline data for basic hematological parameters in healthy pregnant women and concluded that pregnancy in women has the tendency to alter some hematological indices.

Background: Excessive endurance exercise of football players may break their blood cells and decrease the level of haemoglobin (Hb). These will influence the aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and make the need for iron (Fe) of an athlete more than that of common people.Objective: To know the influence of Fe, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and  folic  acid  combined supplementation to the increase of VO2 max capacity  of  the  national  main  and  first division  club football players in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta.Method: The study was RCT (Randomized Controlled Trial) experimental with a completely randomized design plan. The subjects were football players of Perserikatan Sepak Bola Indonesia Mataram (PSIM), Perserikatan Sepak Bola Sleman (PSS), and Perserikatan Sepak Bola Bantul (PERSIBA). They were then divided into two groups: treatment group and control group, each of them consisted of 35 players. Treatment group were given combined supplement capsules of 100 mg Fe, 100 mg vitamin C, and 2 mg folic acid three times a week for eight weeks, while the control group were given the placebo capsules. Before and after supplementation, their Hb and VO2  max were measured. However, the physical exercises were done based on the schedule, programmed by the clubs.Results: Combined supplementation of Fe, vitamin C, and folic acid could increase Hb level significantly (p=0.008), but there was no significant difference of VO2  max capacity between treatment group and control group (p=0.062). However, there was significant correlation between the increase of Hb level and VO  max capacity (r=0.712; p<0.001).Conclusion: Combined supplementation of Fe, vitamin C, and folic acid led to the increase of Hb level of main and first division clubs football players in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, but could not influence their VO2 max capacity.

Anemia in pregnancy is a health problem that usually occurs throughout the world. In developing countries, anemia during pregnancy is due to micronutrient deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid. This was cross sectional study. The population of this study were all anemic pregnant women who came to Lubuk Buaya Health Center. The sample in this study based on inclusion criteria totalling 40 respondents taken by consecutive sampling technique. Examination of ferritin and vitamin B12 levels was carried out at the Andalas University Biomedical Laboratory using the ELISA method. Statistical test was performed using SPSS, normality test with Shapiro Wilk andSpearman test to see the relationship between ferritin and vitamin B12 levels to the baby's birth weight.The results of this study showed that the mean ferritin level of anemia pregnant woman with baby birth weight was 11.13 ± 6.37 with a value of p> 0.05, r = 0.280 and the mean vitamin B12 levels of anemic pregnant women with birth weight were 299, 53 ± 98.46 with a value of p> 0.05, r = 0.161.The conclusion of this study was that there is a non significant positive relationship between ferritin and vitamin B12 levels on the birth weight of the baby. It is recommended that pregnant women keep on consuming Fe tablets during pregnancy and further study is necessary to see pregnant woman adherence in consuming Fe tablets.

AbstractBackground:In this study we evaluated whether vitamin B12 deficiency affects neonatal screening (NS) for congenital hypothyroidism (CH).Methods:A cross-sectional study conducted from 2010 to 2011. A total of 10,740 infants were born in our hospital in this period. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was tested for NS and neonates with abnormal screening results (TSH>20 mIU/L) were re-examined. Two hundred and twenty-nine re-called subjects (re-call rate 2.3%) were compared to 77 randomly selected newborns with normal TSH screening among these term newborns in terms of serum TSH, free T4, vitamin B12 and homocysteine status.Results:Of the 229 re-called subjects, 11 infants with CH and 21 infants with transient TSH elevation were detected. In the normal TSH screening group, only two infants were diagnosed with transient TSH elevation. Mean serum B12 levels were 126.4±48.7 pg/mL and 211.9±127.9 pg/mL in the positive TSH-screening group and the control group, respectively. There was a significant difference between positive and normal TSH-screening groups in regard to serum TSH, free T4, serum B12 and homocysteine levels.Conclusions:We found a significant vitamin B12 deficiency in positive TSH-screening infants. Beside the crucial role of vitamin B12 in newborns, deficiency seems to increase the recall rates of infants in an NS program for CH.
