The concept of this article is based on the following three principal points. The first one is connected with the advent of a new type of student in schools, a bilingual student, and, due to this, the necessity to introduce changes to the modern educational model. The second one is related to the role of reading as a species of speech activity and is concerning the principles of selection of didactic materials when teaching reading to a diverse audience (including bilingual students) in classes of Russian as a Foreign Language in schools of the Czech Republic. As an example, there is provided one of the authors texts which plays the role of a cultural event for school students and primary school students who are mono- and bilinguals, when reading in the family circle, in class or out-of-class. The third one substantiates the necessity and specialty of a purposeful and systematic methodological work with texts, the reading of which could become a cultural event. The authors methodology of work with such texts is proposed.

The present investigation aims to analyze the effect of motivation on students’ causal attributions to choose or abandon chemistry when it first becomes optional in the secondary education curriculum in Spain. Attributions to the effect of the family and to the teacher and classroom methodology were found to be common predictors of the choice to all the students in the sample. However, our analyses point to a significant effect of the students’ motivation in other types of attributions. In the case of at-risk of abandonment students, specific causal attributions to the effect of friends and to the subject's relationship with mathematics were found. On the other hand, the effect of media was a significant predictor only in the case of highly-motivated students. Our study provides several suggestions for teachers, schools, and administrations to design counseling strategies to help students make the right choices.

The aim of the study is twofold. On the one hand it concerns the measurement and the examination of the subjects’ self-concept and on the other the detection and justification of the role of family in its configuration. The study analyzed the data collected from the answers to a research questionnaire of 1344 15-and 16-year-old school students in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, Greece) with the use of a stratified random sampling technique. The first important finding concerned the high degree of the general self-concept of the adolescents. Among the seven specific sectors of the general self-concept a major variation was noted, with the higher average to be traced in the relationship that the students have configured with their peers and the lower one in the valuation of their academic competence. The second important finding was the ascertainment of the essential contribution of the family.

The present study assesses the linguistic development of Portuguese-Umbundu bilingual speakers in Angola by focusing on the production of plural forms. In particular, we analyse if changes in the degree of language exposure, after entering into the school, favor the occurrence of attrition in Umbundu, the home language, in parallel to the development of Portuguese, the dominant school language. A group of 28 bilingual students (14 3rd grade primary school students and 14 teenagers attending the 9th grade) and 28 age-matched monolingual speakers of Portuguese participated in a picture-based oral production elicitation task. The results show that the 3rd grade students have more difficulties in producing the plural in Portuguese, especially in situations where they have to apply particular rules (e.g. replace -ão with -ões), compared to Umbundu, the language that forms the plural by changing nominal classes. However, older students (9th graders) show more difficulties in forming the plural in Umbundu. Although this is not a longitudinal study, the data suggest that the change in the degree of language exposure, as a consequence of schooling in Portuguese, may have contributed to this inversion, which leads us to infer that the family language is vulnerable to attrition effects.
