The current study was conducted to detect the pathological conditions of the congenital abnormalities of ovaries and uterine tubes of cows slaughtered at the abattoir in Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region-Iraq. The pathological conditions were subjected to a macroscopic and microscopic examination of 404 samples of female genitalia collected from slaughtered non-pregnant cows, during the period from February to September 2014 from the Qaragol slaughterhouse twice a week. The organs were observed macroscopically for pathological abnormalities and stained tissues with Haematoxylin and eosin. They were examined under microscope for determination of the type of lesion present in the organ. Among the 404 genitalia samples collected from the non-pregnant animals, 206 (51%) were found without gross pathological abnormalities and (with cyclic activity) and the 30 (7.43%) samples were found with gross congenital abnormalities of ovaries and uterine tubes. Detected lesions in the ovaries and uterine tubes included paraovarian cysts 3.21%, ovarian hypoplasia 1.98%, ovarian agenesis 0.50%, aplasia of uterine tube 0.99%, segmental aplasia of uterine tube 0.50% and accessory of uterine tube 0.25%. The histopathological sections of paraovarian cyst showed a single layer of tubal-type ciliated cuboidal epithelial cells resting on a thin layer of fibrous tissue, the section of ovarian hypoplasia showed lack of ovarian follicles and oocytes, which instead are replaced by bands fibrovascular stroma. The partial duplication of uterine tube was observed, which was about 6 cm from the uterotubal junction and extended distally for a distance of 4 cm that was found in right side of tracts. It was concluded that the paraovarian cysts were the most common congenital abnormalities of ovaries and uterine tubes in non-pregnant cows.

Neuroactive steroids are a family of all steroid-based compounds, of both natural and synthetic origin, which can affect the nervous system functions. Their biosynthesis occurs directly in the nervous system (so-called neurosteroids) or in peripheral endocrine tissues (hormonal steroids). Steroid hormone levels may fluctuate due to physiological changes during life and various pathological conditions affecting individuals. A deeper understanding of neuroactive steroids’ production, in addition to reliable monitoring of their levels in various biological matrices, may be useful in the prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of some neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. The aim of this review is to highlight the most relevant methods currently available for analysis of neuroactive steroids, with an emphasis on immunoanalytical methods and gas, or liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.

AbstractBetweenness centrality quantifies the importance of a vertex for the information flow in a network. The standard betweenness centrality applies to static single-layer networks, but many real world networks are both dynamic and made of several layers. We propose a definition of betweenness centrality for temporal multiplexes. This definition accounts for the topological and temporal structure and for the duration of paths in the determination of the shortest paths. We propose an algorithm to compute the new metric using a mapping to a static graph. We apply the metric to a dataset of $$\sim 20$$ ∼ 20 k European flights and compare the results with those obtained with static or single-layer metrics. The differences in the airports rankings highlight the importance of considering the temporal multiplex structure and an appropriate distance metric.

AbstractThe paper presents an experimental procedure developed for determination of the pore size, shape and distribution in a single layer woven fabric, for the construction of a virtual model to be incorporated in a future CFD software package. The procedure is based on non-destructive observation and analysis of woven samples. 14 different samples of gray fabrics of 100 % cotton in plain and twill weaves are investigated. The results obtained allow the creation of reality more realistic virtual model of the woven structure, and theoretical investigation of its porosity and permeability through computer simulation.

Abstract Background Camouflage of nasal dorsum, aesthetic augmentation and highlighting the dorsal aesthetic lines are essential elements in modern rhinoplasty. Numerous techniques have been utilized including deep temporal fascia, rectus abdominis fascia, and diced cartilage in fascia (DC-F). Despite their wide spread adoption, technical challenges remained, especially when utilized for aesthetic purposes. Objectives The paper details the use of fascia (F) and diced cartilage in fascia grafts (DC-F) for aesthetic dorsal refinement in primary and secondary cases. One of the main goals was to achieve ideal dorsal aesthetic dorsal lines rather than just volume augmentation. Methods We used grafts from the deep temporalis fascia (F) and rectus abdominis fascia (RF) in 4 configurations: 1) single layer, 2) double layer, 3) full length diced cartilage in fascia grafts (DC-F), and 4) partially filled – segmental DC-F grafts. Technical refinements included careful determination of dimensions and meticulously suturing to the dorsum at appropriately 10 points to prevent graft displacement. Results We report our experience: 146 clinical cases over 35 months from January 2017 to December 2019. The patients were divided for 4 groups depending on which type of graft was used. Conclusions Use of autogenous deep temporal fascia, rectus abdominis fascia, and diced cartilage in fascia (DC-F) to camouflage dorsal irregularities, to highlight dorsal aesthetic lines, and to aesthetically augment either the entire nasal dorsum or its individual parts. Optimization of cutting, stitching, filling the graft, careful fixation of these grafts on the nasal dorsum, significantly increases the predictability of these techniques and minimizes problems.

Among all psychotropic alkaloids, nicotine is more addictive, carcinogenic and capable of causing many health problems. This work is based on the development of highly robust, cheap, reliable, selective and sensitive nicotine imprinted graphene oxide nanocomposite (ImpGO nanocomposite) based optical sensor for determination of nicotine in human plasma. The ImpGO nanocomposite has been thoroughly characterized using different techniques i.e. FT-IR, SEM, TEM, Raman, etc. These characterizations revealed that ImpGO nanocomposite is comprised of single layer of graphene oxide successfully modified with imprinted polymer. The synthesized material was utilized to selectively determine nicotine using UV-vis spectrophotometer in BR buffer of 0.1 M at pH 3 and diluted human plasma. The effect of parameters such as buffer concentration, pH, amount of nanocomposite, etc on determination of nicotine using ImpGO nanocomposite were studied thoroughly. Thus, a sensitive optical method was developed for determination of nicotine in human plasma with linear range of 22-370 pM along with LOD and LOQ of 7 pM and 22 pM, respectively. The selectivity of sensor was evaluated using homologues of nicotine such as nicotine amide, caffeine and cotinine. The results obtained from biological samples showed that developed optical sensor is efficient in complex matrices of real sample.

Ultrasound Real time 2D diagnostics, being an available and non-invasive method, issuccessfully used in human medicine, veterinary medicine and biology to diagnose bothphysiological and pathological conditions. In the case of small animals, the ultrasound is often usedto diagnose gravidity, number, size and vitality of fetuses as well as to diagnose pathologicalconditions present in the genital tract, and is also used to examine testicles and prostate of maleanimals. Today's advanced use of the ultrasound diagnostics provides us with an opportunity todetect numerous pathological conditions of reproductive tract of both female and male animals, andthose conditions directly affect health status of other internal organs. The aim of this study is todiagnose primary genital tract disorders using the ultrasound diagnostics, as well as proving itsconnection to the changes in parenchymal organs. The ultrasound examination was performed onthe total of 12 dogs, 6 male and 6 female dogs. Ovaries, uterus and the organs in the abdominal areawere examined using a transducer ranging from 5 to 8 MHz. A transducer of 7.5 MHz was used toexamine prostates and testicles. The patients were in dorsal position. Three out of six examined maledogs exhibited changes on their prostates, and the remaining one had a tumor on the testicles. Cystitisand hyperplasia of prostate were also found upon the examination of these dogs. One out of sixexamined female dogs, had cystic endometrial hyperplasia, three of them had pyometra, and one ofthem was diagnosed with an follicular cyst. In addition to these pathological conditions, changeswere noticed in the liver and pancreas. Along with the detection of primary changes in the genitaltract of both male and female animals, the ultrasound diagnostics can be used to discover consequentchanges in parenchymal organs.

Degradation examinations of outer surface of low-emission steam boiler evaporator tubes are presented in the paper. Metallographic evaluation of scale morphology as well as determination of chemical composition of micro sites and distribution of elements on cross-sections is reported. Water-wall tubes were exposed in steam boiler for up to two years period. Common tubes produced from 16Mo3 steel suffered sulphide and molten salts corrosions. Thermal sprayed tubes with the single layer of 70%Ni 30%Cr alloy demonstrate better corrosion resistance, but become susceptible to sulphide corrosion due to presence of internal voids and cracks. Double layer Al2O3/Ni-30Cr coatings withstood corrosion attack for more than one year of operation, and then failed due to internal heterogeneity and crack generation.

Abstract Objective An important task of veterinarians in cattle husbandry is the early diagnosis of postpartum complications that can lead to infertility. The aim of the study was the evaluation of a new device to distinguish between physiological and pathological conditions of the uterus based on the determination of the time of uterine involution and the physicochemical properties of the vaginal discharge (lochia) during the first weeks after parturition. Material and methods A total of 173 black-and-white Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were examined for any pathological alteration of the uterine involution on days 1–2, 6–8, 11–14 postpartum and, in case of pathological findings, additionally on days 18–22, 23–27 and 28–30 after parturition. In addition to the standard examination a newly developed hand-held instrument (“Metrastatum”) was used to differentiate between physiological and pathological uterine involution. It allows determination of the distance between the cervix and vulva (DCV) and simultaneous collection of lochial secretions. Results The best time to use the new instrument was 10–16 days postpartum. In healthy cows without disturbed puerperium, the average DCV was 25.7 cm (± 0.8 cm) in this phase. This distance decreased by 12.5 ± 0.3 cm compared to the first days. In contrast, in cows with postpartum problems, the DCV was significantly greater at (31 ± 0.7 cm) (p < 0.001). In these animals, the AGV was reduced only by an average of 8.4 ± 0.6 cm when compared to the first days. The mucus obtained with the dome-shaped rubber funnel of the instrument also differed in the cows of the 2 groups. In healthy cows without puerperal problems, the lochia were thick, colorless, transparent and sometimes cloudy. In case of puerperal disorders, the discharge was thin, light red to reddish brown, contained flakes and had a nasty odor depending on the form of the inflammation. Conclusion The dual function of device helps to early diagnose puerperal disorders in cows and to select healthy animals for reproduction and sick cows for treatment depending on the form of uterine inflammation.
