The impact between particles and material surface is a micro-scaled physical phenomenon found in various technological processes and in the study of the mechanical properties of materials. Design of materials with desired properties is a challenging issue for most industries. And especially in aviation one of the most important factors is mass. Recently with the innovations in 3D printing technologies, the importance of this phenomenon has increased. Numerical simulation of multi-particle systems is based on considering binary interactions; therefore, a simplified but as much accurate as possible particle interaction model is required for simulations. Particular cases of axisymmetric particle to substrate contact is modelled at select impact velocities and using different layer thicknesses. When modelling the particle impact at high contact velocity, a substrate thickness dependent change in the restitution coefficient was observed. This change happens is due to elastic waves and is important both to coating and 3D printing technologies when building layers of different properties materials.

AbstractFirst patented in 1986, three-dimensional (3D) printing, also known as additive manufacturing or rapid prototyping, now encompasses a variety of distinct technology types where material is deposited, joined, or solidified layer by layer to create a physical object from a digital file. As 3D printing technologies continue to evolve, and as more manuscripts describing these technologies are published in the medical literature, it is imperative that standardized terminology for 3D printing is utilized. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide recommendations for standardized lexicons for 3D printing technologies described in the medical literature. For all 3D printing methods, standard general ISO/ASTM terms for 3D printing should be utilized. Additional, non-standard terms should be included to facilitate communication and reproducibility when the ISO/ASTM terms are insufficient in describing expository details. By aligning to these guidelines, the use of uniform terms for 3D printing and the associated technologies will lead to improved clarity and reproducibility of published work which will ultimately increase the impact of publications, facilitate quality improvement, and promote the dissemination and adoption of 3D printing in the medical community.

AbstractThis paper examines the impact of the meridional and vertical structures of a preexisting upstream storm track (PUST) organized by preexisting synoptic-scale eddies on eddy-driven blocking in a nonlinear multi-scale interaction model. In this model, the blocking is assumed, based on observations, to be comprised of barotropic and first baroclinic modes, whereas the PUST consists of barotropic, first baroclinic and second baroclinic modes. It is found that the nonlinearity (dispersion) of blocking is intensified (weakened) with increasing amplitude of the first baroclinic mode of the blocking itself. The blocking tends to be long-lived in this case. The lifetime and strength of blocking are significantly influenced by the amplitude of the first baroclinic mode of blocking for given basic westerly winds (BWWs), whereas its spatial pattern and evolution are also affected by the meridional and vertical structures of the PUST.It is shown that the blocking mainly results from the transient eddy forcing induced by the barotropic and first baroclinic modes of PUST, whereas its second baroclinic mode contributes little to the transient eddy forcing. When the PUST shifts northward, eddy-driven blocking shows an asymmetric dipole structure with a strong anticyclone/weak cyclone in a uniform BWW, which induces northward-intensified westerly jet and storm track anomalies mainly on the north side of blocking. However, when the PUST has no meridional shift and is mainly located in the upper troposphere, a north-south anti-symmetric dipole blocking and an intensified split jet with maximum amplitude in the upper troposphere form easily for vertically varying BWWs without meridional shear.

The different capital structure theories propose the possible asymmetric behavior of capital structure. Thus, this paper empirically investigates whether non-financial Jordanian firms follow symmetrical or asymmetrical adjustment model. Then, an interaction model with the size and profitability (firm characteristics) investigated the impact of low/high profit and small/large size on the adjustment of leverage towards the target leverage ratio. This paper covered the period of 14 years (2002-2015) for a total of 110 companies listed on Amman Stock Exchange (75 industrial and 35 services). Results indicate that although Jordanian firms seek a target leverage ratio, their adjustment towards that target is Asymmetrical and high profitable and large companies tend to adjust faster than low profitable and small size companies.

The peculiar feature of friction materials to absorb the kinetic energy of rotating wheels of an automobile to control the speed makes them remarkable in automobile field. The regulation of speed cannot be achieved with the use of single phase material as a friction material. Consequently, the friction material should be comprised of composite materials which consist of several ingredients. Incidentally, the friction materials were formulated with friction modifier, binders, fillers and reinforcements. Due to its pleasant physical properties, asbestos was being used as a filler. Past few decades, it is found that asbestos causes dangerous cancer to its inhaler, which provides a scope its replacement. Several attempts have been made to find an alternative to the hazardous asbestos. The efforts made by different researchers for the impact of every composition of composite friction material in the field are reviewed and studied for their effect on the properties of friction material. Surface morphological studies of different friction material are compared to interpret the concept of surface wear and its correlation with material properties.

Considering the nonlinear property of suspension damping and tire stiffness, a full-vehicle model is built for a heavy-duty truck. A modified preview driver model with nonlinear time delay is inserted into the vehicle model to compute the suitable steering angle of the front wheel and to make the vehicle follow the required route. Next, the finite element model of a five-span continuous curved highway bridge is established, and the bridge’s inherent frequencies and modes are obtained. The curved bridge and the vehicle are coupled by three-directional tire forces, and a three-directional driver–vehicle–bridge interaction model is presented. The presented vehicle model and bridge model are verified by comparing with the published works. The dynamic impact factors of vertical, lateral, and torsional displacements of the bridge are calculated when a vehicle is traversing through the bridge, and the impact factors’ distributions along the bridge are analyzed. The effects of vehicle driving conditions on impact factors are also researched. It is found that the impact factor calculated from the present specification for a straight bridge is smaller than that from the three-directional driver–vehicle–bridge interaction model, and the vertical and torsional impact effects at the third span midpoint are greater than the lateral impact effect.

The investigation of fiber-reinforced composite laminates mechanical response under impact loads can be very difficult due to simultaneous failure phenomena. Indeed, as a consequence of low velocity impacts, intra-laminar damage as fiber and matrix cracking and inter-laminar damage, such as delamination, often take place concurrently, leading to significant reductions in terms of strength and stability for composite structure. In this paper a numerical study is proposed which, by means of non-linear explicit FEM analysis, aims to completely characterize the composite reinforced laminates damage under low velocity impacts. The numerical investigation allowed to obtain an exhaustive insight on the different phases of the impact event considering the damage formation and evolution. Five different impact locations with the same impact energy are taken into account to investigate the influence on the onset and growth of damage.

In this paper, both software model visualization with path simulation and associated machining product are produced based on the step ring based 3-axis path planning to demo model-driven graphics processing unit (GPU) feature in tool path planning and 3D image model classification by GPU simulation. Subtractive 3D printing (i.e., 3D machining) is represented as integration between 3D printing modeling and CNC machining via GPU simulated software. Path planning is applied through material surface removal visualization in high resolution and 3D path simulation via ring selective path planning based on accessibility of path through pattern selection. First, the step ring selects critical features to reconstruct computer aided design (CAD) design model as STL (stereolithography) voxel, and then local optimization is attained within interested ring area for time and energy saving of GPU volume generation as compared to global all automatic path planning with longer latency. The reconstructed CAD model comes from an original sample (GATech buzz) with 2D image information. CAD model for optimization and validation is adopted to sustain manufacturing reproduction based on system simulation feedback. To avoid collision with the produced path from retraction path, we pick adaptive ring path generation and prediction in each planning iteration, which may also minimize material removal. Moreover, we did partition analysis and g-code optimization for large scale model and high density volume data. Image classification and grid analysis based on adaptive 3D tree depth are proposed for multi-level set partition of the model to define no cutting zones. After that, accessibility map is computed based on accessibility space for rotational angular space of path orientation to compare step ring based pass planning verses global all path planning. Feature analysis via central processing unit (CPU) or GPU processor for GPU map computation contributes to high performance computing and cloud computing potential through parallel computing application of subtractive 3D printing in the future.

Abstract Instabilities described by linear theory characterize an important form of wave–particle interaction in the solar wind. We diagnose unstable behavior of solar wind plasma between 0.3 and 1 au via the Nyquist criterion, applying it to fits of ∼1.5M proton and α particle Velocity Distribution Functions (VDFs) observed by Helios I and II. The variation of the fraction of unstable intervals with radial distance from the Sun is linear, signaling a gradual decline in the activity of unstable modes. When calculated as functions of the solar wind velocity and Coulomb number, we obtain more extreme, exponential trends in the regions where collisions appear to have a notable influence on the VDF. Instability growth rates demonstrate similar behavior, and significantly decrease with Coulomb number. We find that for a nonnegligible fraction of observations, the proton beam or secondary component might not be detected, due to instrument resolution limitations, and demonstrate that the impact of this issue does not affect the main conclusions of this work.

This article deals with the spread of corrosion in material at different exposure times, and its effect on the measured brittle fracture and notch impact strength under different temperature conditions. To assess the degradational effect of corrosion on the material characteristics represented by the measured impact strength, we conducted a fractographic analysis of fracture surfaces, the aim of which was to evaluate the spread of corrosion in the material. In the first part of the experiment, two corrosion tests are simulated with a duration time of 432 and 648 hours, to compare the degradation effect of corrosion on the notch impact strength, depending on the duration of the corrosion tests. The following part shows the results of the impact bending test, where the experiment was conducted in an area of reduced and increased temperatures. The final part summarizes the results of the fractographic analysis of sample fracture surfaces from the impact bending tests. Based on the measured the length of the corrosion cracks, we analyzed the sample at the notch and from the material surface after the impact bending test.
