SiCp/Al composite was fabricated by the method of pressureless-infiltration. In atmospheric environment, the atmospheric corrosion behavior of SiCp/Al composites (ZL101+49%SiC+5%Mg) was studied by mass loss, optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectivelhy. The results show that the corrosion rate of the SiCp/Al composites increases with increasing of time in atmospheric environment. Pitting corrosion is the main characteristic of SiCp/Al composite, and corrosion area gradually extends around with time increasing. At last, sheet like corrosion substrates distribute in the surface of n the SiCp/Al composites. Amorphous Al2O3 and amorphous AlxSO4yOHz are the main corrosion products.

Ludwigite ore is a typical low-grade boron ore accounting for 58.5% boron resource of China, which is mainly composed of magnetite, lizardite and szaibelyite. During soda-ash roasting of ludwigite ore, the presence of lizardite hinders the selective activation of boron. In this work, lizardite and szaibelyite were prepared and their soda-ash roasting behaviors were investigated using thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analyses, in order to shed light on the soda-ash activation of boron within ludwigite ore. Thermodynamics of Na2CO3-MgSiO3-Mg2SiO4-Mg2B2O5 via FactSage show that the formation of Na2MgSiO4 was preferential for the reaction between Na2CO3 and MgSiO3/Mg2SiO4. While, regarding the reaction between Na2CO3 and Mg2B2O5, the formation of NaBO2 was foremost. Raising temperature was beneficial for the soda-ash roasting of lizardite and szaibelyite. At a temperature lower than the melting of sodium carbonate (851 °C), the soda-ash roasting of szaibelyite was faster than that of lizardite. Moreover, the melting of sodium carbonate accelerated the reaction between lizardite with sodium carbonate.

Hydrogenated silicon carbonitride (SiCN:H) thin films were deposited by sputtering of silicon carbide target in hydrogen-doped argon and nitrogen atmospheres. The properties of the SiCN:H films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometer, atomic force microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectrophotometer. No distinct crystal was formed in the SiCN:H films as-deposited and annealed at 600∘C and 800∘C. The SiCN:H films were mainly composed of Si–N, Si–C, Si–O, C–C, C–N, C[Formula: see text]N, N–Hn bonds and SiCxNy network structure. The strong blue photoluminescence observed from the SiCN:H film annealed at 600∘C was attributed to SiCxNy network structure.

The experimatal alloys were aged at different temperatures of 180°C, 200°C, 220°C, and 240º C with calcium addition levels of (X=0.5, 1, 1.5, 2%) on Mg-6Al-1Zn-XCa alloy were investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution. All the experimatal alloys were immersed in 3.5% NaCl solutions and the resulted surface were analyzed to study the corrosion behaviour and its surface topography by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The result shows that corrosion attack occurred predominantly on ß phase and α phase exhibit relatively minor corrosion. In addition to that the increased aging temperature coarsens the intermetallic as well as α- Mg grains, which shows adverse effect to corrosion resistances and the best result were obtained at composition of 0.5wt.% Ca aged at 200°C.

Atmospheric corrosion test of TRIP steels was conducted in laboratory. The surface morphologies of the specimens were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electro-probe microanalysis (EPMA). Corrosion performance of TRIP steels under atmospheric environment was investigated by discussing the protective mechanism. The corrosion rates of steel A are significantly greater than steel B in atmospheric environment tests. The enhancement of corrosion performance of TRIP steel is attributed to the additions of alloying elements, such as P, Cr, Cu, and Ni etc.. The alloying elements increase the compactness and densification of rust layers. Electrochemical characteristic of TRIP steel is improved by means of the enhancement of the thermodynamic stability.

AlN/Al ceramic composite was fabricated by directed melt nitridation of pure Al block covered with 10wt% Mg powder at 1300°C in a high purity flowing N2. Microstructure and phase composition of the composite were investigated by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Results showed that AlN is the main phase in the composite and its lattice parameters of a and c are 3.1110Å and 4.9806Å, respectively. The phase composition of the composite changes along the growth direction and a gradient sandwich structure forms. The surface of the composite is made up of a dense and thin nodular AlN layer, underneath which an AlN/Al layer appears, followed by an AlN/Al/MgAl2O4 layer. Thermodynamic calculations predicted the formation of possible phases with the addition of Mg. It suggested that the content of Mg at the reaction frontier of nitridation is considerably lower to 0.15wt% where MgAl2O4 was stable, because of escape and reaction exhaustion of Mg. Once Mg is lower than 0.05wt%, only a dense AlN layer can exist, which prevents the further nitridation of Al melt.

The interfacial reactions between ceramic moulds and DZ417G and DZ125 superalloys were investigated. The microstructure and composition of the interface region were observed by optical microscope, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results showed that (Al1-xCrx)2O3solid solution phase with pink color was formed from the dissolution of Cr2O3and Al2O3and vapour phase, which was transferred to the reaction surfaces. The reaction layer thicknesses of DZ417G and DZ125 alloys were about in the range of 40-50μm. The interface reaction product between DZ417G alloy and ceramic mould was TiO2and the product between DZ125 alloy and ceramic mould was HfO2.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), dispersed in absolute ethanol, were evenly mixed into Ti/MgH2 powders by wet milling. Then, we applied the vacuum hot-pressed sinteringmethod to the CNTs/TiMg composite materials. An optical microscope (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) were used for the microstructure observation and phase analysis of samples. The mechanical properties were measured via the micro-vickers hardness. The results show that the main phases in the composites were Ti, Mg and C. Meanwhile, a small amount of Ti-Mg solid solution phase was also found. The cross-section morphology of the composites shows that the melted magnesium fills the grain interface during extrusion and that the composites have a better compactness. The microstructures of the composites have been greatly refined as the CNT contents increased. The structure of the composites was further refined when 0.5 wt.% CNTs were added. The fracture surface is obviously a ductile fracture. The microhardness increases obviously with the CNT content increasing. When the content of the CNTs is 1.0 wt.%, the microhardness of the composites reaches 232 HV, which is 24% higher than that of the matrix.

Different morphology CuO nanostructures, including platelets, flower-like were simply synthesized at 350 °C controlled by droplet on hydrophobic substrate. This is a simple method which does not require any template, catalyst, or surfactant but can control the morphology of CuO from platelets to flowerlike. The morphologies are strongly dependent on the volume of droplet. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Optical microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to observe the morphology, crystallinity, and chemical composition of the CuO structures. Growth mechanisms for shape selective CuO synthesis were proposed based on these results.
