In response to budget cuts in 2002, 4-H staffing models were restructured. The response by University of Idaho Extension was intended to continue meeting the needs of Idaho’s citizens with fewer UI Extension faculty. This staffing reorganization led to the formation of the District III 4-H Team who united to bring stronger 4-H programs to south central Idaho and expand programs to underserved audiences. Information from surveys and interviews over the past seven years reflects the effectiveness, challenges and successes of the District III 4-H Team. In Making the Best Better: 4-H Staffing Patterns and Trends in the Largest Professional Network in the Nation (2007), author Kirk A. Astroth notes a nationwide change in 4-H leadership at the county level from 4-H faculty to program assistants or coordinators. The information gathered in our research may help other states determine staffing models to meet the needs of clientele in these changing times.

Shannon Dawdy has presented us with a provocative dialogue on the question ‘is archaeology useful?’ In it, she forecasts a rather bleak future for our field, raising doubts about whether archaeology should be useful and whether it is ‘threatened with its own end-time’. Woven throughout her paper are major concerns about the use of archaeology for nationalistic ends and heritage projects which she deems fulfil the needs of archaeologists rather than those of the public they serve. In the final section of her paper, when she asks, ‘can archaeology save the world?’, Dawdy recommends that we reorient our research ‘away from reconstructions of the past and towards problems of the present’ (p. 140). In my contribution to this dialogue, I introduce an issue that reflects on cultural heritage, antiquities and artefact preservation, which, though they may seem antithetical, are closely aligned with Dawdy's concerns. As a prehistorian with a focus on the third millennium B.C. in the Near East and South Asia, I consider these issues to be the ‘big stories’ that have emerged in the early years of this third millennium, and those that speak directly to the usefulness of archaeology. Of course, it is not the only thing we do, but it is ‘useful’.

AbstractPesantren is the oldest educational institution in Indonesia, which is also a subculture that has been fused and colored to the patterns of social life of religious affairs, nation and state in Indonesia. Over the time, many pesantrens are transforming themselves. The teaching methods, culture and even pesantren orientation are shifting together with the flow of changing times. The presence of these changes is expected to continue to address the needs of schools and the increasingly complex problems of the people. However, unlike the case of Benda Kerep Islamic Boarding School, a pesantren located at Benda Kerep Block, Argasunya Village, Harja Mukti Sub-district, Cirebon City, West Java. In the middle of the swift current of changes, this pesantren remains committed and defended the noble values and the past traditions. Changes hardly occur either in social, cultural, religious, and learning method aspects. External system changes do not change the existing education traditions and systems. Even the caregivers, using the legitimacy of the pesantren’s founders try desperately to maintain the traditions as an advantage and uniqueness.

Learner autonomy is a construct in motion, unfolding in step with our academic imaginary. Over the past forty years, it has demonstrated its capacity to adapt to changing times. Introduced in the late 1970s during an era characterized by the teacher-dominated language classroom, learner autonomy provided a much-needed focus on learners as potentially independent individuals capable of taking charge of their learning. Later, as the so-called ‘social turn’ gained prominence in the field of applied linguistics, autonomy revealed itself to be a social construct developed through interdependence. Now, as applied linguists turn their attention to complexity science, what facets of learner autonomy can be revealed by examining the construct from the perspective of complex dynamic systems theory? This paper addresses this question by drawing on the findings of three studies – a five-year ethnography, a longitudinal multiple-case study and a narrative inquiry – all of which explored a social space for language learning located on the campus of a large national university in Japan. The aim of these studies was to explore the ways in which learners experienced the facility and how it supported their linguistic and personal development. Adopting an ecological approach enabled the author and fellow researchers to focus on the affordances that emerged through learners’ engagement with the environment. Gradually, as these studies were carried out over the past eight years, the thinking on how to view this space, the learners and their learning has expanded from a community of practice perspective to one embracing complex dynamic systems theory. This article will examine how this shift in theoretical focus has offered lessons on learner autonomy in this out-of-class context.

Kafā’ah is a marriage law that has relatively little attention from Islamic jurists. This is because kafā’ah is less adaptable to changes in people's lives. Because kafā’ah is identical with the Arab cultural heritage before Islam. But factually this kafā’ah is still a legacy in the books of the fuqaha'. This research is focused on revealing the relevance of the concept of the kafā’ah of the fuqaha' with the changing times of the modern era. As well as how to contextualize the concept of kafā’ah in this modern era so that it truly becomes a path to family harmony. In uncovering the problem, the double movement theory or Fadzlurrahman dual interpretation is used, in which this interpretation becomes the knife of analysis by revealing how the current condition of the kafā’ah is then drawn to the kafā’ah of the past and how the response of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Then the moral values of the Qur'an and the Sunnah are taken using reasoning ratios so that conclusions can be drawn in accordance with current needs. The conclusion of this research is that the concept of kafā’ah in the book of fiqh is not relevant to the needs of this modern era, where kafā’ah in the modern era is more interpreted in terms of equality and ability (competence) to get married, which is different from the kafā’ah of the past which is more nuanced feudalistic.

For an depth understanding of Islamic ideology and shariah, it is necessary to be well-versed in the Arabic language; for this very reason Arab and non –Arab religious scholars (Ulama) in the past psent their lives in carrying  out extensive research and pruduce scholary works on all aspects of the language. The subcontinent produced scholars and thinkers who palyed a major role in guiding the Ummah. These Ulama work untiringly and they carried out pioneer work in teaching, editing, writing original work on Arabic grammer, prose, and oratory.Among these Ulama is sheikh Nizamuddin bin Qutbuddin sehalawi Ansari (1161H- 1748) who was the founder of the Dars-I- Nizami course . He included in the course books of famous Ulama. Most of the books of the course are written in Arabic, but some Persian books on Arabic grammar and syntax wre also included in the course. Need for changes in Dars- I – Nizami: an eduction is basically a palan for the future. It is true that Dars- I – Nizami was best suited for the age for which it was prepared. But times have changed, and so have the demands of the era  changed; there is a race between nations for progress and development. Under such circumstances, the importace of an education system and syllabus cannot be over-emphasised.To cater the needs of changing times our Ulama felt the need for reforming Dars- I – Nizami; especially, when it was criticised from many quaraters. Some of criticism is form very learned, sincere and religious scholars. Among these scholars is Maulana Abulkalam Azad who was a famous and great scholar in the sub-continent. He notice and took a number of misfortunes on the Dars- I – Nizami corruculum in the subcontinent, some of the include: 1-Most of the books on grammar and syntax are in Persian and students have to bear burfen of learning Arabic grmmar, understanding the book and learning Persian. 2- students don’t get to know-how and practice to seak Arabic.Rarely applied rules of grammar, idiom and phonetics taught in unnecessary details  and in philosophical way which is great burden on the students. That is why Abul kalam Azad sought reform, and development the Dars- I – Nizami corruculum. In this rtice we mention some of his efforts in this field, and tite of the article is العلامة أبو الكلام آزاد وجهوده في إصلاح وتطوير منهج الدرس النظامي .  (Allama Abul kalam Azad and his efforts in reforming and developing the Dars- I – Nizami corruculum.)
