Twenty 9-month-old crossbred calves were divided into 2 equal groups (A and B; n = 10). The feeding trial was conducted for 119 days to study the effect of concentrate supplementation on body immune response and blood metabolites in calves. The concentrate and roughage (wheat straw) ratio in the diet of Groups A and B was 60:40 and 30:70, respectively. Daily dry matter intake was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in Group A than in Group B, which also resulted in significantly higher (P < 0.01) total body weight gain in the former group. Protein, albumin, globulin, total and differential leukocyte count in blood were similar in the 2 groups but blood glucose level was higher (P < 0.05) in the calves of Group A. There was no difference in body immune response between the groups, which indicated that body immune response of animals is not significantly influenced by restricted concentrate feeding.

An experiment was conducted to study the utilization of soymilk as milk replacer for raising calves. Nine crossbred calves were selected and divided into three groups on the basis of their body weight and genotype. The calves of group A were reared by cow milk, group B reared by strained soymilk and group C reared by unstrained soymilk. It was found that, total body weight gain of group A, B and C were 13.933 ± 1.222, 13.800 ± 0.917 and 13.233 ± 1.537 Kg, respectively. There was no significant difference among the three groups of calves. Non-significant differences were also seen for increment in wither height (5.588 ± 0.508, 5.419 ± 0.529 and 5.080 ± 0.440 cm, respectively), length (6.096 ± 0.440, 5.927 ± 0.388 and 5.503 ± 0.388 cm, respectively) and heart-girth (5.842 ± 0.440, 5.588 ± 0.916 and 5.419 ± 0.388 cm, respectively) of calves. Economic analysis showed that soymilk was cheaper than cow milk (Tk. 8.0 vs Tk. 44.0). It can be concluded that soymilk as milk replacer could be used successfully for raising dairy calves. To evaluate the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition on renal aging, enalapril was administered in the drinking water to three groups of CF1 mice at doses of 20 mg/L (Group A), 10 mg/L (Group B), and 5 mg/L (Group C). These experimental groups were compared with 20 CF1 mice not receiving enalapril (Group D). At 2 yr, total body weight was 48.1 +/- 7.5 g in Group A, 47.7 +/- 7.1 g in Group B, 47.6 +/- 4.6 g in Group C, and 35.1 +/- 5.4 g in Group D. The ratio of kidney to total body weight, in percentages, was 1.8 +/- 0.3, 1.6 +/- 0.3, 1.9 +/- 0.2, and 1.5 +/- 0.1 in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. Morphometric studies of the kidneys revealed the glomerular diameter to be 86.7 +/- 18.0 microns, 96.9 +/- 6.3 microns, 91.1 +/- 11.4 microns, and 106.8 +/- 9.3 microns in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. The number of glomeruli per square millimeter of renal cortex was 9.6 +/- 3.7, 12.3 +/- 2.7, 12.4 +/- 8.6, and 3.2 +/- 1.5 in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. The mesangial area per glomerulus, in percentages, was 11.6 +/- 4.8, 13.9 +/- 2.9, 14.2 +/- 3.1, and 20.6 +/- 1.9 in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. The percentage of glomeruli with sclerosis was 0.1 +/- 0.1, 0.3 +/- 0.1, 0.6 +/- 0.2, and 11.6 +/- 1.9 in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Background:Several reports have shown that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may trigger a vigorous immune response that could lead to the appearance of various autoantibodies such as antinuclear antibodies, antiphospholipid antibodies or anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, among others. Moreover, the pulmonary involvement in SARS-CoV-2 may resemble that of patients with anti-MDA5 positive syndrome or acute form of antisynthetase syndrome.Objectives:Our aim was to analyse the presence of anti-MDA5 and other myositis-specific autoantibodies such as the antisynthetase antibodies in patients diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2.Methods:Retrospective observational study performed in a tertiary care center. We included 28 patients admitted to the intensive care unit with severe acute respiratory syndrome, 14 at the onset of the disease (group A) and 14 after 30 days of being treated in an intensive care unit (group B). Chest CT was performed at the admission. We analyzed the presence of anti-MDA5 and antisynthetase antibodies by immunoblot (Euroimmune®) and in those who were positive we performed a confirmatory test by immunoprecipitation.Results:All chest CT showed bilateral ground glass pattern. Three out of 14 patients of group A (12 males, 86%, mean ± SD age 67.1 ± 12.2) were positive for antisynthetase antibodies (2 anti-PL7, 1 anti-Jo1), and 6 out of 14 patients of the group B (6 males, 48%, mean ± SD age 68.7 ± 8.1) were positive to antisynthetase antibodies (2 anti-PL7, 2 anti-PL-12, 1 anti-EJ, 1 anti-OJ+PL7). Immunoblots also show positivity for other myositis-specific or associated antibodies, such as anti-TIF1g, anti-PM75, anti-SAE and anti-SRP. All of these results found by immunoblotting were negative by immunoprecipitation. None of the 28 patients were positive for anti-MDA5 antibodies.Conclusion:Severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia is characterized by ground glass pattern in chest CT, as it is found in anti-MDA5 or antisynthetase syndrome. The positivity of several myositis related autoantibodies showed in immunoblot appears to be more related to the vigorous immune response producing polyclonal immunoglobulins than triggering a real myositis-associated interstitial lung disease. An investigation on Long Evans male rats fed with different edible fats and oils was conducted in the Department of Physiology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during a period of 7 weeks (1st April to 19th May, 2005) to determine and to compare the effect of feeds on body weight gain and on weights of some selected organs (heart, liver and kidney) removing the impact of unequal feed intake. A total of 20, six-week old male rats were randomly divided into A, B, C and D groups. Each group consisted of 5 rats. Rats were fed rat pellets purchased from ICDDR,B, Dhaka supplemented with beef fat in group A, fish fat in group B and soybean oil in group C while group D was considered as control and fed only with rat pellets. The concentration of fats and oils were 7% of normal diet and fed for 7 weeks. The highest weekly mean body weight gain (19.90g) adjusted for unequal feed intake was achieved by the rats of beef fat supplemented group A, followed by the rats of soybean oil supplemented group C (19.76g) and fish fat supplemented group B (15.67g). But none of the adjusted means of weekly body weight gain differed significantly (p > 0.05) from the control. Insignificant increases in heart weight were recorded in all treated rats and the maximum weight was in fish oil treated ones. Not much differences were recorded in the kidney weights rather beef oil treated rats' kidney had the lowest mean weight. A significantly (p < 0.01) higher liver weight was recorded in group B & C compared to control (group D), though the differences between A & D were insignificant. It could be concluded that fats and oils are harmful for the rat's body especially on liver and heart. The present study was performed in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Faculty of Animal science and Veterinary Medicine, PSTU, Bangladesh. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire from 125 people in Babugonj upazilla, Barishal for using drugs without prescription or at prescription. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of prescribed and over-the-counter drugs on hematological (TEC, Hb and DLC) and biochemical (blood glucose) parameters in mice during the period March to April, 2019. 140 male mice were randomly divided into seven groups (A, B, C, D, E, F and G), each consisting of 20 mice. Group A was kept as control. Paracetamol, diclofenac, pantoprazole, ranitidine, diazepam and clonazepam were administered orally to mice of group B, C, D, E, F and G, respectively for 28 days. Paracetamol and ranitidine were used by 100% people followed by peantoprazole (80.80%), diclofenac-60%, diazepam-42.40% and clonazepam-24%, respectively without prescription. Paracetamol were used by 100% people followed by peantoprazole (84%), ranitidine-76%, diclofenac-66.40%, clonazepam-53.60% and diazepam 32.80%, respectively at prescription. Paracetamol and diazepam decreased significantly (p<0.05) total erythrocyte count (TEC) at 28th day. Paracetamol, diclofenac and diazepam decreased significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) hemoglobin content (Hb) at 28th day. The Differential leukocyte count (DLC) was not significantly changed at 28th day in mice. Paracetamol, diclofenac, pantoprazole, ranitidine, diazepam and clonazepam increased significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) blood glucose level in mice. Abstract Background: CD4+CD25+hi T cells (Treg) play a suppressive role in immune regulation. DD is an IL-2 receptor specific cytotoxin. We postulated depletion of Treg with DD may enhance immune effector cell populations after HDIL-2 treatment, including rebound lymphocytosis and also eosinophilia which has been reported to be involved in immune response to neoplasm (Mattes J Exp Med 197: 387, 2003). Methods: In this pilot study, 12 pts (8 male, median age 58 yrs) with MRCC were tx with HDIL-2 and DD in different schedules to determine safety and effect on immune response as manifested by changes in Treg, peak lymphocyte, and eosinophil counts. Pts were treated with IL-2 600,000 IU/kg Q8H on days (d) 1–5 and 15–19. Three (group A) and 4 (group B) pts were given 6 and 9ug/kg daily on d8–10 respectively, while 5 (group C) pts received 9ug/kg of DD on d −4 to −2. Nine (group D) pts with metastatic melanoma who received HDIL-2 as above but without DD were included as controls. Flow cytometry was done on days −4, 1,8,10,15,22 for group C and on days 1,8,10,15,22 for groups B, and D. CBC was obtained concurrent or within 24 hours of flow cytometry. Group A pts were evaluated for safety only and were excluded from analysis. Results: Prior to enrollment, all pts had undergone nephrectomy and four patients received interferon-alpha. One pt from group B withdrew from study and was not included in analysis. Administration of DD resulted in a median decline of 25% in Treg number (not significant). DD given before HDIL-2 was associated with a greater increase in Treg post HDIL-2. In Group C there was an increase of rebound median Treg count of 0.88k/ul compared with 0.060k/ul in group B (p=0.025). Absolute lymphocytosis was higher in the combined group getting DD compared to control (median maximal increase of 7.6 vs 4.7 k/ul, respectively) although the difference did not reach statistical significance. However, group C pts had a greater increase in absolute lymphocytosis than did group B pts in which absolute lymphocytosis actually decreased (median increase 10.6 vs. median decrease 0.4 k/ul, p=0.025). A higher peak level of eosinophilia was noted in groups B and C compared with group D (mean increase of 10.5 vs. 4.0 k/ul p=0.2). Group C had a greater peak eosinophilia than group B (11.2 vs 2.2 k/ul p=0.053) Toxicity was manageable and consistent with those seen with HDIL-2. Median HDIL-2 dose given was 21 (range, 14–28). No clinical responses were observed. Of 11 pts included in the analysis 1 pt from group A expired 68 weeks after enrollment. All remaining patients are alive. Survival from enrollment ranges from 11 to 93 weeks. Conclusion: Overall, the combination of DD and HDIL-2 results in a stimulatory effect as manifested by increased rebound lymphocytosis and eosinophilia compared to HDIL-2 alone. Administration of DD in conjunction with HDIL-2 was associated with a rebound in Treg that may be schedule and dose dependent. The results suggest an enhanced immune stimulatory effect as manifested by lymphocytosis and peak eosinophilia in group C. However, this stimulatory effect also extends to Treg that may prove detrimental clinically. Further exploration of these effects in immunotherapy naïve patients would be beneficial.

In total, 240 three-weeks-old sexed birds (191.06±6.01g), 120 + 120 from Lakha, Mushki, Peshaweri and Mianwali varieties of local Aseel were used to determine the influence of selenium forms on growth during three growth phases. Birds were divided into four equal groups, 60 birds/variety (30 + 30 ), further subdivided into A, B and C treatment groups, 10 bids/treatment. Each group was allocated starter, grower and finisher diets. Group A was offered the diet supplemented with 0.3 ppm Se-enriched yeast and the diet of group B included 0.3 ppm sodium selenite, while group C was fed with un-supplemented control diet. Birds were maintained individually for 18 weeks. Feed intake was decreased, while, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and body weight gain were improved in males and females of Lakha, while best results detected in males during all growth phases in Se-enriched yeast fed groups. In conclusion, Se-enriched yeast had the positive effect in improving growth parameters of native Aseel.

✓ The correlation existing in several human malignancies between lymphocytic infiltration and prolonged survival prompted this study. Two hundred selected patients who were operated on for glioblastoma were reviewed to investigate the incidence of the lymphocytic infiltration in the histological slides and its possible relevance to a better clinical course. The group that exhibited a definite lymphocytic infiltration (Group A, 11.5%) had a significantly longer preoperative history and postoperative survival (p < 0.01) than the other two groups that presented slight or no infiltration (Group B, 23%, and Group C, 65%, respectively). In addition, biopsies of 28 recidivous gliomas were reviewed to study the fate of this lymphocytic infiltration in relation to time and therapy, such as irradiation and steroids which are known to depress the immune response. The authors found that severe lymphocytic infiltration is a rare immunobiological reaction which significantly improves the prognosis of a malignant brain tumor and seems not to be influenced by time, local x-ray therapy, or steroids.

This study reports the association between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the immune response to pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Three groups were analyzed: (a) symptomatic patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), HIV-negative; (b) healthy individuals, tuberculin skin test reactive (TST+); (c) asymptomatic individuals, TST nonreactive (TST−). Groups B and C presented a negative bacilloscopic smear, normal chest radiographs, and negative HIV. The ELISA was used for IFN-γ, IL-10, TNF-α, and IgG quantification and lymph proliferative assay (LPA) to evaluate the cellular immune response. IgG and LPA increased in all study groups as well as IFN-γ and TNF-α, but IL-10 remained low in all study groups. There was an association between LPA and IFN-γ in group B. It was demonstrated an association between IgG and IL-10 and between IFN-γ and IL-10 in group A. There were direct and significant correlations between LPA and IgG, TNF-α and IFN-γ, IL-10 and IgG, and between IL-10 and IFN-γ, but an inverse relationship was observed between IFN-γ and LPA.

Abstract. The present paper investigates the body length and weight, and the size-weight variations of one-month-old European catfish reared at 4 variants of stocking density: Variant 1 – 5 spec/l; Variant 2 – 10 spec/l; Variant 3 – 15 spec/l and Variant 4 – 28 spec/l. The experiment is carried out at the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Plovdiv for a period of 16 days, using a production system consisting of tubs with continuous water flow (0.7 l/min). At the end of the experiment, the fish from each variant are sorted in three size-weight groups: A – large, B – medium and C – small. The number of fish in each group is established. From the group of the medium- and small-sized fish, 150 speciments are measured, while from the group of the large specimens, which are the smallest in number, all specimens are measured for the biometric parameters body weight (BW, g) and total body length (TL, cm). The results from the study show small variations in the length and weight of the fish reared at the lowest stocking density (Variant 1). As the density increase, the size-weight differences between the specimens from Group A also increased, while of those from Group B they decrease. The number of the medium-sized fish decrease (p≤0.001) while the number of large specimens (p≤0.01) and small fish increase (p≤0.001).
