Introduction: One of flora in the oral cavity is Streptococcus mutans as a cause of dental caries. Various ways can be done to suppress its growth, one of them by using mouthwash which is used contains a lot of chemicals, so an alternative is needed by using herbal ingredients, including basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves that contain essential oils, methyl eugenol, phenols, and flavonoids which are able to work as antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibition and optimal concentration of basil leaf extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Materials and method: The method used agar Kirby Bauer method with seven treatments of leaf extract with concentrations of 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4%, and methanol solution as control group. The culture medium used was Muller Hinton Blood Agar. Results and discussions: The Kruskall Wallis test showed a significant difference between treatment groups. Mann Whitney U-Test test, found that the control group, basil leaf extract concentrations of 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% and 3% were tested with concentrations of 3.5% and 4% had a significant difference. The test between groups of 3.5% and 4% basil leaf extract did not show a significant difference. Conclusion: this study was that in vitro basil leaf extract with a concentration of 3.5% and 4% had inhibitory power on the growth of Streptococcus mutans and basil leaf extract with a concentration of 3.5% optimally inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro

ABSTRACTBackground: Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease that causes damage on periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The severity of periodontitis is caused by several types of bacterial species which one of them is Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria with a prevalence of 85% in oral cavity. The extract of kelakai leaf contained antibacterial in the form of flavonoid, alkaloid, tannin, and steroid. Flavonoid consists of some chemical compounds which is one of them is quercetin. The level of quercetin in kelakai leaf is 503.56 mgQE/g. From some secondary metabolites, kelakai leaf has inhibitory power toward gram negative bacterial, Porphyromonas gingivalis. Objective: This research was intended to know the activity of inhibitory power of kelakai leaf toward Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Method: This research was an experimental research consisted of 5 experimental groups that were group of kelakai leaf extract on the concentrations of 100 mh/ml, 75 mg/ml, 50mg/ml, and 25 mg/ml and the control group (0.2% chlorhexidine). Each treatment was done in 4 repetitions. The test of inhibitory power used diffusion method by measuring the inhibitory zone around the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis on Mueller Hinton Agar media. The data were analyzed by using One Way Anova 95% and then continued with LSD. Results: Based on the LSD test, it was known that the extract of Kelakai leaf had inhibitor power activity toward Porphyromonas gingivalis. The highest inhibitory zone was on the concentration of 100 mg/ml with inhibitory zone of 14.61 mm. Conclusion: The extract of kelakai leaf had inhibitory power activity toward Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro. Keywords: 0.2% chlorhexidine, Diffusion method, Inhibitory power, Stenochlaena palustris extract, Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) antibacterial power of soursop leaf extract on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) ATCC® 6514™ growth.Methods: This study was experimental laboratory with post-test only control group design and consists of 8 treatment groups that were soursop leaf extract group with concentration 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, and 1.5625% as well as negative control groups were brain heart infusion broth (BHIB) media and chlorhexidine as positive controls. Each treatment was done 3 repetitions. Testing the effectiveness of soursop leaf extract using dilution methods on BHIB and subculture media on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. The number of Aa ATCC® 6514 ™ colonies was calculated manually using the total plate count method on the MHA media. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis test (p<0.05) followed by least significance different (LSD) test to see the significant mean difference between treatment groups.Results: Concentration of MIC from soursop leaf extract on Aa ATCC® 6514™ growth was 1.5625% and MBC was 6.25%. LSD assay results showed significant difference effect (p<0.05) Aa ATCC® 6514™ from each treatment group.Conclusion: Soursop leaf extract has antibacterial effectivity against Aa ATCC® 6514 ™.

Intoduction: Health is the condition of the entire body and body parts of an individual who is free from disease both physically, mentally and socially, thus enabling the individual to be able to carry out daily activities more productively. However, many people neglect their own health, especially in the field of dental and oral health. Caries is one of the most common oral and dental problems. The prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia is high, namely 88.8%. Dental caries is caused by Streptococcus mutans bacteria which plays a role in the conversion of sucrose to lactic acid. Infection due to Streptococcus mutans bacteria can be treated by taking antibiotics. Apart from drugs, antibiotics can also be obtained from natural ingredients, one of which is the tintir castor plant (Jatropha multifida Linn) or commonly known as the betadine. Objective: To see the effect of the antibacterial content of tintir leaves against Streptococcus mutans bacteria and to determine the differences in the antibacterial effect of betadine leaf extract (Jatropha multifida L.) from a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: The type of research used in this study was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design as the research design and to test the sensitivity of bacteria using the paper disc diffusion test. Data analysis using One-Way ANOVA. Result: The results of this study indicate the effect of tintir castor leaf extract (Jatropha multifida L.) in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria.

Introduction: Basil leaf (Ocimum basilicum L.) is one of the most accessible natural plant in Asia such as Indonesia. Basil leaf vegetation contains a lot of flavonoid compounds and essential oils that have the effect as antibacterial because it can inhibit the growth of bacteria Streptococcus mutans cause dental caries. Streptococcus mutans is a round gram-positive bacteria that typically form pairs or chains during its growth. The purpose of this research is to know the antibacterial effectivity of ethanol extract of basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L.) on the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria.This research was conducted with laboratory experimental research method. Basil lean ethanol extract was prepared by using maseration extraction method. Method: The method used in the inhibitory test using diffusion of the disc with 5 samples in each treatment group. The sample consisted of 5 treatment groups, ethanol  extract of basil leaves with concentration of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20%. Result: The result of this study showed that ethanol extract of basil leaves with 100% concentration had inhibitory power of 10,26 mm (strong category), 80% of 9,65 mm (medium category), 60% by 8,12 mm (medium category), 40% by 7,33 mm (medium category), and 20% by 6,90 mm (medium category). Conclusion: The conclusion of this research proves that basil leaf ethanol extract has antibacterial power agains Streptococcus mutans bacteria with effective concentration is 100% with strong category equal to 10,26 mm.

Abstract Background: The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the possible enhancement of the biofilm peeling effect of a sonic toothbrush following the use of an antimicrobial mouth rinse.Methods: The biofilm at a noncontact site in the interdental area was treated by sound wave convection with the test solution or by immersion in the solution. The biofilm peeling effect was evaluated by determining the bacterial counts and performing morphological observations. A Streptococcus mutans biofilm was allowed to develop on composite resin discs by cultivation with stirring at 50 rpm for 72 hours. The specimens were then placed in recesses located between plastic teeth and divided into an immersion group and a combination group. The immersion group was treated with phosphate buffer, Peridex™ mouth rinse or Listerine® mouth rinse. The combination group was treated with Peridex™ or Listerine® and a sonic toothbrush.Results: The biofilm thickness was reduced by approximately one-half compared with the control group. The combination treatment produced a 1 log reduction in the number of bacteria compared to the Listerine® immersion treatment. No significant difference was observed in the biofilm peeling effect of the immersion group compared to the control group.Conclusions: The combined use of a sonic toothbrush and a mouth rinse enhanced the peeling of the biofilm that proliferates in places that are difficult to reach using mechanical stress.

Papaya leaves contain several active substances that are thought to inhibit bacterial adhesion. This study aims to determine the inhibitory power of papaya leaf extraction and papaya leaf infusion to the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans bacteria to neutrophils and differences in inhibition in various concentrations. The method used is an in vitro experimental laboratory with a post-test-only control group design. The sample consisted of several concentrations of papaya leaf extraction and papaya leaf infusion (control, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). The treatment group was added with neutrophil isolates and incubated for 3 hours, then exposed to Streptococcus mutans for 2.5 hours. Knowing the adhesion index can be done by calculating the average number of Streptococcus mutans attached to 100 neutrophils. The results showed successively with rounding in control, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% papaya leaf infusion, adhesion of 9237, 8929, 7436, 3870, 3162 bacteria to neutrophils occurred. The minimum concentration of 25% papaya leaf extraction and 50% papaya leaf infusion can inhibit the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to neutrophils. There is a difference in the ability between papaya leaf extraction and papaya leaf infusion in inhibiting the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to neutrophils as follows: papaya leaf extraction 25% to papaya leaf infusion 25% obtained sig value ≥0.001* with a mean square of -16.38, papaya leaf extraction 50% to Papaya leaf infusion 50% got a sig value of ≥0.001* with a mean square of -42.91, 75% papaya leaf extraction to 75% papaya leaf infusion got a sig value of ≥0.001* with a mean square of -28.85 and 100% papaya leaf extraction to 100% papaya leaf infusion obtained a sig value of ≥0.001* with a mean square of -26.11.

One of the aesthetic problem which had bother and become a complaint was teeth discoloration that can be overcome by dental bleaching procedures. The use of tooth whitening ingredient can cause side effects such as tooth sensitivity and mucous irritation. Therefore, many researchers have been looking for a safer alternatives materials  to be used as tooth whitening ingredients including Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) contain of elegat acid and malic acid and Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) contain of citric acid which have potential to whiten the teeth. The purpose of this research is to determine differences strawberry and lime fruit as a natural ingredient of tooth whitening. This research used in vitro laboratory experiment method by using 30 post-extraction premolar on teeth divided into three groups, namely the treatment of strawberry concentration of 100% (K1), the treatment group lime concentration of  2.5% (K2 ) and the treatment control group carbamide peroxide 10% (K3). Color changes measurements was observed pretest and posttest by 15 observers using Shade Guide VITAPAN classical. The research showed that strawberry concentration of 100% have an average difference in the color of teeth is 6.40, lime concentration of 2.5 at 6.20 and carbamide peroxide 10% as the control group amounted to 3.20. Based on the Kruskal Wallis test there are differences in the average value of the observation color of the teeth was significant (P <0.05) and continued with different test further the Post Hoc Test Mann Whitney gained significant difference (p> 0.05) between treatment groups strawberry 100% with carbamide peroxide 10%, lime and 2.5% carbamide peroxide 10%, while among the treatment groups strawberries 100% with 2.5% lime fruit is not significantly different because it has a value of p> 0.05. Strawberry concentration of 100% more effective to whiten teeth than lime concentration of 2.5%, but there is no significant difference in teeth whitening, while lime is more effective than carbamide peroxide 10%. SummaryThe beneficial effect of supplementing culture medium with melatonin has been reported during in vitro embryo development of species such as mouse, bovine and porcine. However, the effect of melatonin on mouse somatic cell nuclear transfer remains unknown. In this study, we assessed the effects of various concentrations of melatonin (10−6 to 10−12 M) on the in vitro development of mouse somatic cell nuclear transfer embryos for 96 h. Embryos cultured without melatonin were used as control. There was no significant difference in cleavage rates between the groups supplemented with melatonin, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and the control. The rate of development to blastocyst stage was significantly higher in the group supplemented with 10−12 M melatonin compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Thus, our data demonstrated that adding melatonin to pre-implantation mouse nuclear-transferred embryos can accelerate blastocyst formation.

Objective: Breadfruit leaf has potent antibacterial properties that could be used to reduce biofilms in the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was toanalyze the antibacterial effect of the breadfruit leaf extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro.Methods: S. mutans ATCC 25175 was cultured in a 96-well plate and incubated at 37°C for 20 h (accumulation phase) and 24 h (maturation phase).The breadfruit leaf extract was added at the following concentrations: 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100%. The viability of S. mutans was testedwith the MTT assay at a wavelength of 490 nm. The results were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance.Results: In the accumulation phase, a significant decrease was found in S. mutans viability at different concentrations of the breadfruit leaf extract, butin the maturation phase, a significant decrease was found in the S. mutans viability at the 5% concentration. The other groups decreased significantlycompared with the control group (*p<0.05). The viability of S. mutans after adding the breadfruit leaf extract at all concentrations was lower in theaccumulation phase than that in the maturation phase.Conclusion: In the accumulation phase, breadfruit leaf extract at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100% can reduce S. mutans biofilmviability.
