University campus has a profound impact on the growth and development of college students. In this study, we use Photovoice method to explore how female freshmen perceive and build up the sentimental ties with the campus. Participants (n=54; aged 18-19 years) were asked to photograph and discuss perceived positive/negative places on Tongji University campus (Shanghai). In the process of analysis, thematic and content analysis was conducted by natural language processing software, the correlation of key words were examined by Rost Content Mining. The study shows that place attachment comes from the fulfilment of activity demand, which is not only related to the place function itself, but also caused by people’s place cognition and emotional experience. Architecture, roads(and its affiliated facilities), greening and landscape, public space, and atmosphere are particularly important for creating place cognition and emotional experience. Meanwhile, Photovoice, as an emerging participatory research method, shows great potential in the place-making, as it significantly improved the students’ participation, critical thinking and constructive suggestions in this campus study

This article expands on the usability of the concepts of “place making” and “place attachment” as recently developed in urban studies research in the context of housing insecurity of marginalized communities in today’s neo-liberal city. Particularly, against the growing threat of urban evictions, the article utilizes a transdisciplinary approach, showing the relevance of both concepts for (a) a better understanding of bottom-up processes of spatial production and attempts to create a sense of place on the part of such communities, and (b) offering an innovative legal strategy for doing justice to these communities in terms of their compensation rights, especially where a title to land has not been registered on a private basis. These issues are critically examined on the site-related case of the Givat-Amal quarter in Tel Aviv, Israel. This district is now under actual final threat of forced evictions following seven conflicted decades with the state, municipal authorities and private entrepreneurs. Our transdisciplinary study is based on qualitative methodologies in human geography such as fieldwork, visual evidence, and interviews, with a glimpse into philosophy. It is equally based on revisiting “traditional” legal property rights through the lens of post-liberal human rights analysis. The argument can apply to many situations of forced evictions across Africa, Latin America, and the West itself.

The Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNSUACE) campus is located in Zapochainie, a historical area in Nizhny Novgorod, so the issues of revitalization of the historico-architectural environment and those concerning the methods of architectural design are interwoven in the text. The symbiotic relationship between education, science and practice used as a principal tool for the training of architects at NNSUACE made it possible to envision the evolution of the university campus. The article presents the projects proposed by professional architects and students in response to the need to meet both practical and ideological challenges – to transform the university campus into a viable public space.

University campus gardens provide the integrity of the environment with educational buildings, connect the users and buildings, and provide liveable spaces for users. Campuses serve as a public space for academic, administrative and technical staff, especially students, as well as incoming visitors. As a public space, the ability of students to meet all their recreational, social and cultural needs is directly related to the content and designs of the open and green spaces of the campuses. It is essential to ensure the landscape designs of these spaces, in line with the structural and planting design principles, and with the successful composition of the user-space relationship where the user needs and desires are determined. From this point of view, it is aimed to evaluate the landscape designs of the two campuses of Trakya University, where art and design-oriented education is realised, in terms of user satisfaction. For this purpose, it was revealed by a survey that measures the satisfaction of the users of the two campuses where determined the spatial and landscape requirements of design-based education. In the survey, the users' duration and purpose of use of the campus, feelings created by various equipment on users, the usage the building and gardens and the current conditions of the campuses were determined. The frequency percentages of the data obtained in the survey study were evaluated using the SPSS 26.0 program. As a result, suggestions have been developed to improve the current use of the two campus gardens and to ensure the sustainability of the spaces.

This study originated from cases of language disorders that occur in society in Pahae Julu district. Language is a need to interact, and humans have been blessed with Language Acquisition Device (LAD) or any language by god. However, if when speaking of someone impaired both LAD and language processing part of the brain, then the communication will not be smooth. The language disorders can happen to anyone. The purpose of this study is to reveal some kinds of language disorders, cases of language disorders and to find out the causes of language disorders experienced by the community in Pahae Julu. The method used in this research is descriptive research method type of case studies.

The physical configuration of the university campus impacts upon student learning and experience, and can be used to signal institutional priorities. The extent to which campus, particularly in post 92 institutions, is designed as opposed to evolving as older buildings are repurposed or replaced is variable. Student experiences and perceptions of the campus physical space are also unclear. This study aimed to explore student perceptions using qualitative methods. Data were collected during 8 focus groups from 37 participants. The majority were young and female, with considerable ethnic diversity. Six major themes were identified, many of which did not directly relate to the physical space itself. Rather the impact upon students’ emotional experience and engagement with the institution was emphasised. ‘Belonging’ was the most common theme; indicating that the nature of the physical space on campus is not neutral, but can affect the extent to which students can form attachments with each other and academic staff. ‘Nature’ was the second most commonly mentioned theme. Green space has therapeutic potential in stress management, important given mental health concerns in young people including students. The ideal campus as described by participants would include green non-smoking spaces with an emphasis on health promotion. Opportunities to include nature on campus should be taken, and future proposals to design the campus should canvas student views.

Sociotope mapping is a tool that has been used to identify values in public spaces, as defined by the public. By developing an original sociotope map using the sociotope map methodology, utilizing the technique created in Stockhom, Sweden, this research attempts to understand the values of public space within and around Ryerson University, while providing a critique on the utility of the tool in this context. The information collected from an online survey will be analyzed and visually displayed on a sociotope map. This may be utilized by the school administration, municipal planners, urban designers or landscape architecture professionals to understand what concerns may be provoked by the development of certain spaces and the resources valued by the public in the public realm. This project explores how different public spaces within the Ryerson University Campus are utilized and how useful is the sociotope mapping tool in inferring these values. keywords: planning; sociotope; parks planning; perceptions of space; engagement; public consultation.

The small settlement of Hopetoun in the Victoria’s north-east – Mallee country – is oriented physically, economically and socially around Lake Laschelle. Large signs map the way for the tourist to its edge, where boat ramps and picnic sites await. And yet there is no water here and has been none for years. The presence of water in its absence is palpable. Over three years I followed water around the drought-ridden Mallee, a participant in a creative research project that sought to poetically recollect and assemble stories from this country as an experiment in place-making. Via collaborative practice between artists, with local community, and with the material environment of the Mallee itself, this still ongoing project brings poetic practice to bear on questions of political urgency – drought, climate change, community distress – usually the province of the techno and social sciences. In a land cultivated to take note of water’s absence, the project began to assemble its presence. This paper discusses this project as a methodological experiment that raises unsettling questions about the ethics of place-making in a context of post-colonial environmental change.

In the context of a community-based planning process to relocate a neighborhood public library in Madison, Wisconsin, this research examines youth’s everyday mobility to improve their access to public space. Through an analysis of field notes, cognitive maps, and interviews with fifth and eighth graders, researchers find that youth move relatively independently every day while using different place-making strategies. The research also finds that mobility options among youth are racialized experiences with important implications in accessing services like the library. The article identifies library planning as an important process for building inclusive community spaces.
