scholarly journals Investigation of the radiation situation near the tailings dumps of the Stepnogorsk Hydrometallurgical Plant

The article discusses issues related to the production waste of Stepnogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (SМMС). The greatest danger to the environment is represented by radionuclides. Soil types and their resistance and ability to accumulate radionuclides are considered. It is also noted that harmful radioisotopes spread through the soil and atmosphere and the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of these substances decreases from the source of their storage and this is due to the fact that different soils have different conductivity of these harmful substances. The article also identifies opportunities to reduce the impact of SМMС wastes on soil and vegetation, as well as the atmosphere near a dangerous source of radiation infection.

Introduction.Methanol and its derivatives occupy one of the leading places among the main organic synthesis intermediates in terms of their importance and scale of production. According to experts, by 2027 the global demand for methanol can reach 135 million tons, the annual growth will be about 5.5%. However, there is little information regarding the assessment of working conditions and occupational risks for workers in modern methanol production and its derivatives. The aim of the studyis hygienic assessment of working conditions and the formation of health risks in workers of modern production of methanol and methylamines.Materials and methods. The assessment of the main adverse factors of production is given. When studying the state of health, objective indicators (the results of an in-depth medical examination) and subjective (the results of a quantitative assessment of the risks of the main pathological syndromes associated with health) are considered.Results.According to long-term observations, the concentration of harmful substances in the air of the working area, indicators of labor severity, parameters of physical factors met hygienic requirements, with the exception of industrial noise exceeding the maximum permissible level, as well as labor intensity of 1 degree. The General assessment of working conditions corresponds to the category of harmful 2 degrees (3.2). According to the results of the medical examination and quantitative assessment of the risks of health disorders in workers, the most significant were functional disorders and diseases of the circulatory system. The levels of somatic pathology on the part of the main body systems were significantly higher in apparatchiks compared to the engineering and technical personnel (ETP).Conclusions:In the production of methyl alcohol and methylamines, the main hygienic importance is the impact on workers of the complex of harmful substances of 1-IV hazard classes in low concentrations, increased levels of industrial noise, labor intensity of 1 degree. According to the subjective assessment of health and medical examination, the greatest prevalence of health risks in workers was observed from the circulatory system, and the levels of the revealed somatic pathology were statistically significantly higher in apparatchiks compared with the ETP.

Air pollution is an environmental problem that is familiar to residents of absolutely all corners of the earth. It is especially acutely felt by residents of cities where enterprises of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, energy, chemical, petrochemical, construction, pulp and paper industries operate. In some cities, the atmosphere is also severely poisoned by vehicles and boiler houses. These are all examples of anthropogenic air pollution. The subject of the study is the emissions of carbon dioxide into the environment. The purpose of the study is to solve the problem of environmental pollution by harmful substances and preserve the ecology in the world. Methodology. The main indicators characterizing the impact on the environment - CO2 emissions in the global energy sector - have been systematized; two indicators have been identified that determine the level of atmospheric pollution. Results - the scale of the influence of atmospheric air pollution on human health and the entire ecosystem as a whole was revealed.

Nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacteria known as rhizobia can exist in different soils and adapt to different environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of pH on the growth of Rhizobium trifolii and Sinorhizobium meliloti. Rhizobial species were isolated using yeast extract mannitol agar medium) in which the pH values were adjusted to 5.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 9.0 by adding HCl and NaOH. The optimum pH for rhizobia is neutral or slightly alkaline (pH 8) and they are more sensitive to acidity. Sinorhizobium meliloti developed better in an acid medium compared to Rhizobium trifolii.

Industrial crop cultivation on marginal agricultural land limits indirect land-use change effects that pose a threat to food security. This review compiles results from 91 published crop-specific field trial datasets spanning 12 relevant industrial crops and discusses their suitability for cultivation on unfavorable soil types (USTs). It was shown that the perennial species Miscanthus (Miscanthus Andersson) and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) performed well on USTs with both high clay and/or high sand contents. Information on stoniness (particles sizes > 2 mm), where mentioned, was limited. It was found to have only a small impact on biological yield potential, though it was not possible to assess the impact on mechanization as would be used at a commercial scale. For soils with extreme clay or sand contents, half of the crops showed moderate suitability. The large yield variations within and between crops revealed large knowledge gaps in the combined effects of crop type and agronomy on USTs. Therefore, more field trials are needed on diverse USTs in different climates with better equipment and more consistent measurements to improve the accuracy of potential yield predictions spatially and temporally. Additionally, larger trials are needed to optimize cultivation and harvesting.

In this study, changes in air quality were quantified before and during the introduction of COVID-19 quarantine measures in the Shchuchinsk-Borovskaya resort area. During 2020, there were only 49 resolutions "On strengthening restrictive quarantine measures in the territory of the Akmola region"on the territory of the resort zone. The maximum permissible concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmospheric air has been exceeded. We have revealed that in the entire territory of the resort area for 2018-2019. atmospheric air pollution, according to the standard index, was elevated and high (3.38 to 6.4), according to the highest frequency (16.6 to 100%), there was a very high degree of pollution, and in 2020, the indicators of the standard index and the highest frequency were within the norm.

Among the most important problems currently faced by air transport, we can distinguish the adverse impact of aircrafts on the natu-ral environment, as well as the rising costs of transport. One of the possibilities to improve this situation is better adjustment of aircraft characteristics to the performed transport tasks, taking into account all the requirements and limitations that exist in air traffic and the adverse impact of air transport on the natural environment. It is reflected in the research tasks conducted under the SESAR program. The aspiration to minimize the adverse impact of aircrafts on the environment is executed, among others, through determining such trajectories that are characterized by minimal fuel consumption or minimal emission of harmful substances in the engines exhausts. These goals are corresponding with the research conducted and described in the paper. The main aim of the work was to analyse the impact of wind speed and direction on the emission of harmful substances of a jet aircraft performing a flight on a given route. For research purposes, the route between two Polish cities Gdansk and Rzeszow was considered. The distance between the two airports was divided into sections for which wind direction and strength were determined (read from the windy.com website). Next, the aircraft per-formance was determined and the fuel consumption and the amount of harmful compounds (CO2, NOx, CO and HC), emitted in the en-gines exhausts were determined for the route from Gdansk to Rzeszow (under favourable wind conditions) and on the return route – from Rzeszow to Gdansk (under unfavourable wind conditions). For comparative purposes, emission of these substances for windless condi-tions was also determined. The results are presented in tables and depicted in the graph, as well as discussed in the conclusions of the paper.

Bajra Napier is an important forage crop. Numerous studies have reported a direct relationship between ferrite levels and physiological function of plants. The present study investigates the impact of iron sources and its levels on yield and chlorophyll content of Bajra Napier. The experiment was carried out in a Factorial CRD with 3 factors namely seven sources of Iron (Fe glycinate, Fe citrate, Fe tartrate, Fe glutamate, FeSO4, Fe-EDDHA, Fe malate) four levels (FeSO4 - 0, 25, 37.5 and 50 kg ha -1 and Fe chelates - 0, 1, 2.5 and 5 kg ha -1) and two different soils (Calcareous and Non-calcareous).The results revealed that the iron application increased the chlorophyll concentration and yield, and it was also seen that as the level increased there was an increase in both the characteristics. These results indicated that applying Fe chelates have significantly improved the quality of produce and it was seen that there was an improvement in the iron uptake and the fodder yield showed a greater increase when compared to ferrous sulphate.

Latex (natural polymer) and poly-DADMAC (synthetic polymer) were applied to a red brown earth (Alfisol) and a Wiesenboden (Mollisol). Run-off, infiltration, sediment loss and water stable aggregates were measured after subjecting the soils to simulated rainfall. Water retention of latex and poly-DADMAC amended soils was determined. The MED test for hydrophobicity was also carried out for the latex-treated soil. Latex decreased run-off and erosion, and increased infiltration on both soils. Poly-DADMAC minimized run-off and erosion, and increased infiltration on the Wiesenboden. It increased run-off and decreased infiltration on the red-brown earth; however, it still decreased erosion. Latex increased the percentage of water-stable aggregates > 2 mm on the red-brown earth, but it had less effect on the Wiesenboden. Poly-DADMAC decreased the percentage of water-stable aggregates < 0.125 mm on both soils after simulated rainfall. Both latex and poly-DADMAC had little effect on water retention of the red-brown earth and the Wiesenboden. Application of 1.5 g kg-1 of latex increased MED values of both soils, to give values that indicate moderate water-repellence but should not affect plant growth. Generally, latex was more effective on the red-brown earth and poly-DADMAC was more effective on the Wiesenboden. It seems that latex can be effective on all soil types, but poly-DADMAC will have more effect on clay soils.
