The study was conducted to investigate the influence of feeding some of the common browse trees leaves in Bauchi state on haematological and biochemical parameters of Yankasa lambs. Fourty lambs were allotted to eight different browse trees namely: Maje (Daniella oliver), Madaci (Khaya senegalensis), Marke (Anogesisessus leicarpus), Baure (Ficus syncomorus), Kuka (Adansonia gigitata), Magarya (Zizaphus Mauritania), Taura (Detarium macrocarpum) and Baushe (Terminalia glaucescens), as treatments with five replications in each case. The feeding trial lasted for seventy days. Ten milligrams (10mls) of Blood sample was collected from each animal at the end of the feeding trial. The samples were collected via Jugular vein early in the morning. About 3mls of each blood sample was placed in EDTA (anticoagulant) bottle for haematological studies. The haematological values obtained from lab were subjected to statistical analysis. The remaining 7mls was placed in universal bottle and allowed to stand at room temperature and centrifuged for 15 minutes. The serum was separated and store in a freezer for chemical analysis. The hematological values obtained from lab were subjected to statistical analysis. Results indicated Taura had significantly higher (p<0.05) PCV (40.70 %) and MCV (64.60 pl), Magarya Hb (13.66 g/dl) and RBC (8.48 X1012 ) Maje MCH (19.24 pg) values. Baure and Maje were higher (p<0.05) with statistically the same values of 7.22, respectively in RBC. WBC was highest in Marke leaves (10.5 X109) while Maje recorded significantly highest (p<0.05) MCHC value of 37.74 g/dl. Blood serum showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in Urea concentration across all the treatments. Animals fed Madaci recorded the highest Total protein value of 7.4 g/l. L'essai d'alimentation a duré soixante-dix jours.

Background Kombucha tea is a fermented tea beverage that is mainly consumed for its associated-health benefits. These associated-health benefits may range from detoxifying the body to cancer treating. However, there is little to no scientific evidence that suggests that they work on humans. Similarly, kombucha tea is also prone to post-fermentation. This presents possible ethanol production and accumulation within the tea after packaging which can pose a possible health risk to susceptible population if not properly labelled or controlled. This study will investigate if there is any post-ethanol accumulation in commercially produced kombucha tea products under various storage conditions. Methods The ethanol concentration of 3 different kombucha tea brands (i.e.: Pure+, Health-Ade, and RISE) at various storage conditions (i.e.: no storage, refrigeration, and room temperature) were analyzed using GC-FID to determine post-ethanol accumulation. In addition, NCSS software was used to conduct a statistical analysis on the data to determine whether the 3 different kombucha tea brands exceeded the ethanol regulatory limit and whether the ethanol accumulation was dependent on storage temperatures. Results The mean ethanol concentration for Pure+, Health-Ade, and RISE after refrigeration for 3 weeks were 0.722%, 0.696%, and 0.050% relatively which all showed a slight decrease in ethanol compared to their baseline ethanol levels (i.e.: no storage). Similarly, Pure+, Health-Ade, and RISE mean ethanol concentration after room temperature storage were 1.766%, 1.285%, and 0.794% relatively which indicates ethanol accumulation. Statistical analysis showed that there is a significant difference between room temperature storage and the other 2 storage conditions (i.e.: no storage and refrigeration). Also, only Pure+ and Health-Ade under room temperature storage showed a statistically significant mean ethanol concentration above the regulatory limit. Conclusion Results suggests that room temperature storage of Pure+, Health-Ade, and RISE for 3 weeks increased the ethanol levels significantly while refrigerating them will decrease the ethanol levels slightly which can minimize any potential post-fermentation process from happening. Furthermore, only Pure+ and Health-Ade under room temperature storage for 3 weeks were over the 1% ABV regulatory limit. Lastly, the data obtained from this study can be used to develop guidelines and policies in regulating kombucha tea manufacturers and in educating the public and other regulatory agencies on the matter.

The need to observe the changes taking place in the animal's body in response to external factors such as nutrition, housing system and microclimate as it affects intake, rumen metabolite, haematological and biochemical parameters cannot be over-emphasized. Against this background, a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding diets containing graded levels of Palm Kernel Cake (PKC) on feed intake, rumen metabolites, haematological and biochemical characteristics of yearling Bunaji bulls. Twenty yearling Bunaji bulls with average weight of 130kg and aged 1-1.5 years were balanced for weight and allotted to five dietary treatments with four bulls per treatment in Completely Randomized Design. They were individually penned and fed diets containing graded levels of PKC at (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%) and Digitaria smutsii (Wholly finger grass) hay at 4% body weight (2% concentrate and 2% hay). The feeding trial lasted for 90 days. Blood samples were collected at the beginning, middle and end of the feeding trial to determine some haematological and biochemical changes. Rumen fluid were collected at 0, 3, 6 and 9hrs intervals to determine the rumen pH, rumen ammonia nitrogen(RAN) and rumen total volatile fatty acids(TVFA) for the yearling bulls. The CP contents of the experimental diets varied between 14.19 and 17.75% while ME ranged from 11.79 to11.81MJ/kg DM. The crude fibre varied from 26.36-38.77%. Average feed intake ranged between 5.38-5.61Kg/day with animals on 10%, 20% and 40% PKC being statistically similar (P>0.05).Rumen parameters were significantly (P<0.05) affected by sampling time, such that at 0hrRumen pH was highest (7.08) and lowest at 3hrs post feeding(6.66),RAN value was similar at 0hr pre feeding (10.44 mg/100mL) and 3hr post feeding (9.93 mg/100mL) but differ at 6hr (8.25 mg/100ml) and 9hrs post feeding (8.34mg/100mL).There was significant difference (P< 0.05) among treatments for all the haematogical and biochemical parameters measured. Highest urea value was obtained at 0% PKC inclusion, animals on diets containing 20,30 and 40%PKC were statistically similar (P>0.05), Total protein ranged from 70.83 - 78.92 g/l and highest value was obtained at 30% PKC inclusion, animals on diets containing 10% and 20%PKC were statistically similar (P>0.05) but differ from 40%. The study concluded that up to 40% inclusion level of PKC could be added to the diets of yearling Bunaji bulls with no adverse effect on their feed intake, rumen metabolite and some of their blood parameters. L'essai d'alimentation a duré 90 jours.

Production effectiveness of rapeseed stamping in the common carp fodder was attested in the controlled conditions of recirculation system with the absence of natural food. 4 isonitrogenous (31.5% NS) and isoenergetic (17.3 MJ GE.kg−1, resp. 13.5 MJ DE.kg−1) diet with different (35 and 40%) unmodified (URS) and technologically modified (MRS) rapeseed expeller ratio were tested. During the sixty-day feeding trial, beneficial production effect of diet with modified stamping was proved. Diet MRS fish were characterized by significantly (P < 0.05) faster length growth. In comparison with fry of MRS variant, they have reached highly significantly (P < 0.01) the higher values of broad – backedness index and significantly (P < 0.05) higher values of body width. Significant values were not detected by individual weight and HSI. Except the haematocrit value, there were no hematologic and biochemical indices influenced by feed type. Higher content of fat in the URS was shown at fish variant URS/40 by higher fat deposition in hepatopancreas (averagely 30.31%), without statistically significant difference compared to other variants.

The aim of our experiment was to compare the effect of different levels of the addition ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae (S. c.)yeast culture on feed carrier to the current ration MK DOJ Levucell SC 20, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 (E 1711) 20.1010CFU on the blood parameters of high-pregnant breeding cows and their calves. The experiment included 42 breeding cows of the Czech Fleckvieh cattle breed and their calves. The breeding cows were divided into two age groups, each of 21 heads. The first group included heifers and the second group consisted of cows on the 2ndand higher lactation. Each age group had 7 control animals (Heifers/Cows – control), 7 animals receiving 50 g of yeast culture on the feed carrier per head and day (Heifers/Cows – 50 g), and 7 animals receiving 150 g of yeast culture on the feed carrier per head and day (Heifers/Cows – 150 g). Blood of the animals was sampled three times during the experiment – two times in the cows and one time in their calves. The first blood sample was taken from the breeding cows before the start of feeding the yeast culture ca. 23 days before the expected parturition (Cow −23). The second blood sample was taken from the breeding cows within 24 hours after birth (Cow +2) and the third blood sample was taken from the calves on the 3rd–4thday after birth (Calf +4). Parameters ascertained in the processed serum were: immunoglobulines G (IgG), crude protein (CP), gamma glutamyl-transferase (GGT), urea, glutamate-pyruvate-transaminase (GPT) and glutamate-oxaloacetate-transaminase (GOT). Results of our experiment, which lasted from 16.3 to 28.6 (105 days) showed IgG in the serum of cows on the 2ndand higher lactation in the control group (3.8 ± 1.48 mg/ml) was statistically significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the blood sample Cow +2 than in the serum of cows in the 2ndand higher lactation fed with the lower concentration ofSaccharomyces cerevisiaeat the same sampling (15.9 ± 11.41 mg/ml). This correlates also with the fact that the content of IgG antibodies in the serum of calves after the cows on the 2ndand higher lactation in the control group (3.9 ± 2.06 mg/ml) was statistically significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of calves after the cows on the 2ndand higher lactation with the lower concentration ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae(14.6 ± 8.67 mg/ ml).As to the higher addition, no statistically significant difference of the effect on the IgG content was recorded (P < 0.05).

Introduction: The basic determinant of healthy behaviour—among other human behaviours—is the fact that it consistently affects health. Nowadays, health behaviour studies are considered to be an important method of measuring the health of a population. Objective: To assess the health behaviours and value-based health analysis of people aged 50+ who were hospitalized due to cardiovascular disease, depending on the selected descriptive variables. Materials and methods: The study was conducted between April 2018 and December 2018 among 411 subjects aged 50+ who were hospitalized due to cardiovascular disease at the Independent Public Health Care Unit in Sanok (Podkarpackie voivodship in Poland). The method used in the study was a diagnostic survey. The study used the authors’ survey questionnaire and two standardized tests: Inventory of Health-Related Behaviour (IHB) and List of Health Criteria (LHC). A statistical analysis was carried out in the R program, version 3.5.1. The obtained results were subjected to thorough statistical analysis using the following tests: Student’s t, Mann–Whitney U, ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis, Fisher’s Least Significant Difference (LSD), Pearson, and Spearman. Results: The strongest correlation between health status and health behaviours (according to the IHB questionnaire) was in the area of ‘health practices’, while the lowest correlation was found in the areas of ‘correct eating habits’ and ‘preventive behaviours’. Based on the LHC questionnaire, the most important health criteria according to the subjects were ‘not feeling any physical ailments’; ‘having all body parts functional’; ‘feeling well’; ‘eating properly’; and ‘infrequent need of going to the doctor’. A positive correlation was found in the group of respondents where the ‘preventive health behaviours’ were more intense; herein, the more important criterion for the respondents was ‘eating properly’. Conclusions: Respondents aged 50+ and hospitalized for cardiovascular diseases indicated (based on the IHB questionnaire) that health behaviours in the area of ‘health practices’ had the strongest correlation with their health, while the lowest correlation was found in the areas of ‘correct eating habits’ and ‘preventive behaviours’. According to the respondents, the most important criteria determining health (according to the LHC questionnaire) included ’not feeling any physical ailments’; ‘having all body parts functional’; ‘feeling well’; ‘eating properly’; and ‘infrequent need of going to the doctor’. Based on the information collected from the respondents, it was found that the most important criteria determining health depended on selected descriptive variables, such as age, gender, place of residence, education, and marital status.

Introduction After extensive mediastinal dissection fails to achieve adequate intra-abdominal esophageal length, a Collis gastroplasty(CG) is recommended to decrease axial tension and reduce hiatal hernia recurrence. However, concerns exist about staple line leak, and long-term symptoms of heartburn and dysphagia due to the acid-producing neoesophagus which lacks peristaltic activity. This study aimed to assess long-term satisfaction and GERD-related quality of life after robotic fundoplication with CG (wedge fundectomy technique) and to compare outcomes to patients who underwent fundoplication without CG. Outcomes studied included patient satisfaction, resumption of proton pump inhibitors (PPI), length of surgery (LOS), hospital stay, and reintervention. Methods This was a single-center retrospective analysis of patients from January 2017 through December 2018 undergoing elective robotic hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication. 61 patients were contacted for follow-up, of which 20 responded. Of those 20 patients, 7 had a CG performed during surgery while 13 did not. There was no significant difference in size and type of hiatal hernias in the 2 groups. These patients agreed to give their feedback via a GERD health-related quality of life (GERD HRQL) questionnaire. Their medical records were reviewed for LOS, length of hospital stay (LOH), and reintervention needed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v 25. Satisfaction and need for PPIs were compared between the treatment and control groups using the chi-square test of independence. Results Statistical analysis showed that satisfaction with outcome and PPI resumption was not significantly different between both groups ( P > .05). There was a significant difference in the average ranks between the 2 groups for the question on postoperative dysphagia on the follow-up GERD HRQL questionnaire, with the group with CG reporting no dysphagia. There were no significant differences in the average ranks between the 2 groups for the remaining 15 questions ( P > .05). The median LOS was longer in patients who had a CG compared to patients who did not (250 vs. 148 min) ( P = .01). The LOH stay was not significantly different ( P > .05) with a median length of stay of 2 days observed in both groups. There were no leaks in the Collis group and no reoperations, conversions, or blood transfusions needed in either group. Conclusion Collis gastroplasty is a safe option to utilize for short esophagus noted despite extensive mediastinal mobilization and does not adversely affect the LOH stay, need for reoperation, or patient long-term satisfaction.

Introduction: The transverse myocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap has become a popular and reliable alternative for autologous breast reconstruction. Initially described as a valuable tissue source for women with low body-mass index, indications nowadays have widely expanded. The Western civilization demographic development with its aging population and the steady growing average BMI has led to increasing breast reconstructions with TMG flaps in overweight and aged individuals. Patients and Methods: A total of 300 TMG free flaps for unilateral autologous breast reconstruction were evaluated in the form of a retrospective double center cohort study. Data extraction, study group formation and statistical analysis (One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s chi-squared statistical analysis and relative risk calculation) were done specifically to evaluate age and BMI as risk factors for postoperative complications and outcome. Results: No significant differences in patients’ age and BMI in the complication groups compared to the no-complication group could be found. No significant difference regarding the occurrence of complications could be found in any of the formed risk-groups. No significant increase of minor-, major- or overall complications, flap loss or revision surgeries were found in the elderly patient groups or for patients with overweight. Conclusion: Age and overweight do not significantly increase the risk for postoperative complications after breast reconstructions with free TMG flaps. The findings of this study support the fact that microsurgical breast reconstruction with a free TMG flap should not solely be reserved for younger patients and females with a lower BMI.
