One of the dominant features of modern civilisation is the growing correlation between economic growth and the quality of its human potential, the level and condition of which are vital components of national wealth and the driving force of economic prosperity. Hence the increased attention to the analysis of current trends in demographic development of the population. This particularly concerns the lower administrative-territorial level, because it is there that the demoreproducing processes are developed and the life processes of the population take place. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the main trends of demographic development of the population of small rural settlements of Zakarpatska Oblast and identify factors that generate depopulation phenomena and, consequently, formulate recommendations for minimising the impact of said factors on the demographic processes among the rural population. In accordance with the set purpose, the study analyses the main trends in the demographic development of the population of small rural settlements in the Zakarpatska Oblast over the past 30 years. The demo-reproducing processes were studied considering the population structure in terms of natural and economic zones of the region, covering small villages of lowland, foothill, and mountain natural and economic zones. It was established that vertical zoning affects not only the conditions of business affairs and entrepreneurial activity of the population, but also the dynamics of natural population growth. Considerable attention is paid to the analysis of the dynamics of change in the population living in small settlements. The study identifies the main reasons that determine the strengthening of depopulation in small villages of the mountain natural economic zone. The authors prove the fact of decrease in the population density of small villages with their remoteness from regional centres and cities. The paper also features an analysis of changes in the age and sex structure of the population of small rural settlements, as well as identifies factors that deform the sex and age structure of the population, the effect of which in the near future will lead to decrease in the number of the economically active population and increase in budgetary expenditures for the maintenance of retired persons. The authors provide sound justification of the necessity of measures aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of demographic policy, thereby improving the quality of the human potential of the rural population, as well as preserving and reproducing its life and labour potential

Abstract The impact of the transformation of economic activities and sharp weather and climate changes on the quality of life in rural settlements on peatlands in the Moscow region was analyzed. As theoretical background, an analysis of various interpretations of the concept of the quality of life was carried out, including in the context of sustainable development. The impact of economic and environmental factors of the quality of life in rural settlements on peatlands is considered with respect to their location in the zone of attraction of Moscow. It was concluded that the development of industrialization in the region led to population decline and to increase in the anthropogenic load. This critically increased the vulnerability of peatlands to fluctuations in weather and climate conditions and several times led to serious environmental disasters. At the same time, location in the zone of attraction of Moscow opens up opportunities for improving the quality of life associated with the development of post-industrial recreational use.

The article provides an analysis of the current level of migration to and from the Kaliningrad region. The article focuses on the impact of migration on the replacement of the natural population decline and its age and sex structure. The data on the age and sex of migrants and the population of municipalities of the Kaliningrad region in 2011-2017 were used in the analysis. The author has built a typology of migration trends in the region. The main classifying feature was the criterion of migration intensity in different age and gender groups, which was estimated using the net migration rate. It was found that despite the generally favourable nature of the age profile of migration for demographic development, migration replaces the reduction in the number of the working-age population only partially. The ageing of the population is observed in the East and South-West of the region, some coastal areas, whereas the rejuvenation of the population is registered in other coastal areas and the Kaliningrad agglomeration. The gender structure of migration tends to exacerbate the existing disparities. In the municipalities of the region, the intraregional and external migration largely go in the opposite directions. Migration exchange with the CIS, the Baltic countries and regions of Russia partly replaces the loss of the male population and youth in intraregional exchange.

AbstractNanotechnology is a key advanced technology enabling contribution, development, and sustainable impact on food, medicine, and agriculture sectors. Nanomaterials have potential to lead qualitative and quantitative production of healthier, safer, and high-quality functional foods which are perishable or semi-perishable in nature. Nanotechnologies are superior than conventional food processing technologies with increased shelf life of food products, preventing contamination, and production of enhanced food quality. This comprehensive review on nanotechnologies for functional food development describes the current trends and future perspectives of advanced nanomaterials in food sector considering processing, packaging, security, and storage. Applications of nanotechnologies enhance the food bioavailability, taste, texture, and consistency, achieved through modification of particle size, possible cluster formation, and surface charge of food nanomaterials. In addition, the nanodelivery-mediated nutraceuticals, synergistic action of nanomaterials in food protection, and the application of nanosensors in smart food packaging for monitoring the quality of the stored foods and the common methods employed for assessing the impact of nanomaterials in biological systems are also discussed.

The impact of land use on the water quality of foothill microcatchment areas The impact of land use on the water quality of foothill microcatchment areas. In this paper a comparison is made between the impact of land use methods on the quality of water in the streams which drain various catchment areas. For this purpose three microcatchments were selected which are located in agricultural, rural settlements, and forested areas. Water samples were physically and chemically analysed in order to determine: nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, phosphates, sulphates, chlorides, calcium, magnesium, dissolved oxygen, reaction and conductivity. The above studies were conducted in the 2006 and 2007. Our analysis of the collected materials allows us to affirm that land use methods have a significant impact on the water quality of the streams which drain the area. Rural settlement has the most negative influence on the water quality, followed by typical agricultural use. Based on the direct quality evaluations of single water samples, it has been found that only water from forested areas can be qualified as belonging to the 1st cleanness class.

The purpose of this research is to assess the degree of auspiciousness of the human resources potential of the agricultural territories of Volgograd region, its territorial structure. The authors use the classical methodological approach of economic geography in conjunction with modern geographic information systems. The study includes three stages. The first is the collection and processing of statistical data on the main indicators of human resources of rural settlements such as number, density, age composition. The second stage includes the compilation of thematic maps for the selected indicators, the allocation of classes for the ranges of values of indicators and their spatial analysis. The third stage is the creation of an integrated map for a set of indicators with the allocation of territories according to the degree of auspiciousness of the potential of human resources. As a result, the main characteristics of the rural population of Volgograd region are identified. It has been established that most of the rural settlements belong to large rural settlements. Zones of increased and decreased density of the rural population are identified. According to the estimation of the age composition made by calculating the aging index, the rural population is in the stage of deep and very deep aging. Geoinformation mapping methods allow not only statistical processing of data, but also spatial analysis of the distribution of mapped indicators. The geoinformation analysis of the human potential of agricultural territories allows us to talk about the mosaic nature of its territorial structure, the alternation of territories with varying degrees of its development.

In the modern socio-ecological and economic life of Ukraine, rural areas occupy a special place; they are an integral part of the agricultural sphere, because they are home to more than a third of the population of our country. These areas are characterized by an exceptional contribution to the formation of food security. Increasing the country’s export potential makes the development of rural areas one of the main priorities of Ukraine’s state policy, which aims to raise living standards of the rural population, increase the efficiency of the agro-industrial complex, improve the environment and improve the quality of life of peasants. However, prior to land reform, monitoring of agricultural land on former collective and state farms was conducted at the state level, and residential areas where the population grew for their own needs were never surveyed. And according to the population itself, no standards for the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers have ever been observed. Many years of research conducted at the Institute of Agroecology and Nature Management of NAAS found that in the residential area of rural settlements drinking water is contaminated with nitrates, vegetable products — nitrates and heavy metals, which indicates the need for monitoring in the residential area. Modern ecological assessment of rural settlements remains relevant, unrealized and requires regular research, socio-ecological monitoring and scientific substantiation of their ecologically balanced development. Intensification of agricultural production, reduction of forests and forest belts, intensive plowing of lands, intensification of water and wind erosion processes, drainage of swamps, migration and reduction of the number of experienced rural population have led to degradation of Ukraine’s agrosphere. The analysis of modern strategies of development of rural territorial communities has shown that in none of them the ecological nature protection aspect is taken into account (at best, socio-economic one, and usually — just economic development). This indicates that community leaders are not properly trained to perform their current community development functions, taking into account environmental security and policies. The still low ecological culture and consciousness of the rural population of Ukraine inhibits the civilized development of rural areas and with it the quality of life of the population in these areas.

The problems in implementation of a number of programs adopted for the development of rural settlements in Kazakhstan are shown, including: low level of production and engineering infrastructure in rural areas of the republic; decline in the quality of education due to the lack of competition among social workers in rural areas. Proposals on early solution of the current situation have been developed. The need for stage-by-stage financing of the assigned tasks and strict control over their implementation, provision of financial mechanisms is indicated, in order to increase the remuneration of specialists in the field of agro-industrial production, it is necessary to develop specific effective measures aimed at increasing the effectiveness of agricultural sector. The authors state that budget expenditures for the development of low-potential RS are ineffective. Prospects for the development of rural areas to a certain extent depend on the activation of regional public bodies and local self-government in expanding the methods of managing socioeconomic processes, developing interaction with the population and business structures, which will make it possible to successfully implement the set objectives, significantly increase the level of employment and incomes of the rural population, improve living conditions and on this basis increase the number of regions with stable rural population; will help improve the quality of life of the village residents. In the course of the study, methods of comparing economic indicators in dynamics, systematization, and generalization of scientific data were used.

The relevance of the study is that the poor quality and fragmentary engineering arrangement of rural settlements negatively affects the demographics of rural areas. The aim of the study is to develop a comprehensive methodology for assessing the impact of the state of engineering infrastructure of rural settlements on the demography of rural territories, which is an integral indicator of the proposed rural population density. The paper proposes a method for a comprehensive assessment of rural areas by the level of development of engineering infrastructure. The composite index of rural engineering infrastructure development aggregates seven private statistical indicators calculated for each region of Russia in 2018 and normalized using the linear scaling method. The main difference between the author’s method and the previously conducted research is the combination of the results of ranking Russian regions by the level of development of engineering infrastructure in rural areas with grouping by the density of the rural population. The novelty of the proposed approach is associated with the formation of two-dimensional groupings of rural areas, where population density is regarded as the primary grouping characteristics, and the level of development of engineering infrastructure as a secondary grouping characteristic that gave the possibility to evaluate the correlation between the level of development of social and engineering infrastructure of rural territories and their people. The results of the correlation analysis indicate a moderate relationship between the density of the rural population and the level of development of engineering infrastructure in rural areas. In practical terms, the typology formed serves as an objective basis for identifying and comparing growth points and priorities for sustainable spatial development of rural territories in the future, which creates prerequisites for the unification of state approaches to strategic planning and management of socio-economic development of rural territories of the Russian Federation and regions. The directions of further research are related to the development of the proposed approach in terms of comprehensive coverage of other components of socio-economic development of rural areas (demography, economy, agriculture, social infrastructure) for a more complete assessment of their impact on the rural population density.
