Water is essential for the existence and well-being of humanity and should be of good quality to ensure the maintenance of life. The present work aim to determine the quality of the well water used for human consumption. The physical-chemical and microbiological analysis (turbidity, pH, residual chlorine, total coliforms and Escherichia coli were carried out according to the Government MS 518/2004 of the Brazilian Ministry Health. The samples have been carried out in February, 2008. The neighborhoods of Alta Floresta were divided into three sections. In each section were collected 20 samples. The pH of most samples was less than 6.0, disagreeing with the Brazilian directive. There was no free chlorine residual in the samples. Color and turbidity showed values ( 15µH and 5,0 uT, respectively) according to Brazilian directive. The total coliform and Escherichia coli were found in all samples. According to the microbiological analysis, all samples were classified as inappropriate for human consumption.

In recent years, sachet water known as "pure water" has gained the confidence of the Nigerien public because of its low price, availability, convenience, and quality perception by consumers. This study highlights the impact of storage on the quality of pure water sold in Niamey. Thus, eleven of the twelve analyzed physicochemical parameters have been monitored during six weeks of "pure water" storage in the sun and at laboratory ambient temperature. From the results obtained, the physicochemical parameters are in norms except the turbidity and the residual chlorine. On the Bacteriological plan, the total germs, the salmonellae, the fecal streptococci and the Escherichia coli have been identified. In addition, the monitoring of the evolution of the parameters analyzed during six weeks of storage revealed a change of the organoleptic quality that appears in the fourth week and a development of Escherichia Coli for the "pure water" exposed in the sun. This study showed, on the one hand, that these "pure water" would be unfit to the human consumption and on the other hand, their storage for a prolonged period and a high temperature affects their qualities. Les eaux conditionnées en sachet plastique, communément appelées "pure water", ont depuis quelques années, gagné la confiance du public nigérien en raison de leur faible prix, leur disponibilité, la commodité, et de la perception de qualité par les consommateurs. Ce travail étudie l’impact du stockage sur la qualité des "pure water" vendues à Niamey. Ainsi, onze parmi les douze paramètres physico-chimiques analysés ont été suivis pendant six semaines de stockage des "pure water" au soleil et à la température ambiante de laboratoire. A l’issue des résultats obtenus, les paramètres physico-chimiques sont dans les normes hormis la turbidité et le chlore résiduel. Sur le plan bactériologique, les germes totaux, les salmonelles, les streptocoques fécaux et les Escherichia colis ont été identifiés. Par ailleurs, le suivi de l’évolution des paramètres analysés pendant six semaines de stockage a révélé une altération de la qualité organoleptique qui se manifeste à la quatrième semaine et un développement des Escherichia colis pour les "pure water" exposées au soleil. Cette étude a montré, d’une part, que ces "pure water" seraient impropres à la consommation humaine et d’autre part, leur stockage pendant une période prolongée et une température élevée affecte leurs qualités.

What better gift of nature would be than good quality water? In order to assess the quality of water of Rawal Lake, following research was carried out. Rawal lake is a source of drinking water supplied to many areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad’ the capital city of Pakistan. Water of this lake is being highly polluted by the local communities alongside the lake through solid waste dumping. Samples of surface water were collected, tested and analyzed in the laboratory on the basis of physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. The results showed uncertainties in many of the selected parameters. Microbiological analysis revealed high contamination of E. coli, fecal coliform and total coliform in the samples proving it unfit for drinking. It was found that the concentration of all physical parameters such as nitrates, chloride, pH and conductivity were within the normal limits. The level of heavy metals like lead, iron, chromium etc. was also found low. Turbidity at some points exceeded the maximum acceptable limit as per WHO statement. Background: The coronavirus pandemic and the government restrictions significantly disturbed the daily functioning of people, thereby influencing healthy behaviors, such as physical activity—the core indicator of well-being. This study evaluates the associations between physical activity (PA), the level of stress and quality of sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Methods: An online survey was distributed during the governmental lockdown in April 2020 and included measures for assessing physical activity, stress and sleep. The surveyed participants included all adults aged 18 years and over. The final data were collected from the 1959 respondents using: International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Findings: Almost half of the respondents indicated a low level of PA, performing only 60 min of PA daily. Most of the participants reported a moderate or high level of stress (57% and 29%, respectively) and 64% of them reported poor quality of sleep. People with low levels of stress performed on average 85.1 min/day of walking (WPA), 40.9 min/day of moderate PA (MPA) or 52.6 min/day of vigorous PA (VPA). People with good quality of sleep performed 82.9 min/day of WPA, 43.6 min/day MPA and 40.5 min/day VPA. Interpretation: The results from the study indicate that the volume of daily PA may be a predictor of the level of stress and sleep quality in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. To retain a low level of stress and good quality of sleep, a lifestyle that allows to achieve a moderate level of physical activity should be maintained. The optimal daily dose of PA is at least 70 min per day, involving different intensities.

Due to the increase in the consumption of natural products, there has been a growing use and commercialization of bee pollen, thus, the need for a greater quality control regarding the physical-chemical and microbiological characteristics of this product is justified. In this way, the research aimed to determine the physical-chemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics of four brands of dehydrated pollen, marketed in natural products houses in different parts of the city of Belém-Pará. Microbiological (aerobic mesophilic bacteria, fungi and yeasts, Coliformes at 45°, Salmonella sp and Staphylococcus aureus) and sensorial analyzes were carried out in the physicochemical analyzes (moisture, ashes, lipids, proteins, pH, free acidity, total sugars). The results obtained were within the parameters of quality allowed by the Brazilian legislation for dehydrated pollen. Regarding the microbiological analysis, all brands showed absence of Staphylococus aureus and Salmonella spp. For the sensorial analysis, the C mark presented better results for both flavor and aroma, confirming the quality of the dehydrated pollen commercialized in Belém-Pa.

A cosmetologia é a ciência que engloba e estuda os cosméticos, desde conceitos iniciais até a sua fabricação, tornando-se uma ciência multidisciplinar. Para garantia de um uso seguro e eficaz dos cosméticos é necessário a realização de análises para se conseguir um padrão de qualidade. Quando há indícios de contaminação por microrganismos no cosmético, diversos problemas podem ser encontrados, como a ocorrência de patologias específicas, causando altos riscos e complicações à saúde do usuário. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar qualitativamente através de análises microbiológicas a qualidade dos produtos cosméticos de maquiagem usados de forma compartilhada, utilizando amostras colhidas aleatoriamente em uma loja de varejo, que foi selecionada por ser de grande circulação, da cidade de Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará. Nesta pesquisa foram analisadas oito amostras coletadas durante o período de outubro e novembro de 2017. As análises que foram realizadas seguiram a Farmacopeia brasileira. Como resultado obteve-se um percentual de 87,5 % de contaminação microbiana, evidenciando a presença de Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus sp. e Pseudomonas aeruginosa, sendo que apenas uma das oito amostras analisadas mostrou-se adequada para uso seguindo os limites de aceitação microbiológicas permitidos por lei. Baseados nesses resultados foi possível concluir que o índice de contaminação das amostras de batons que são utilizadas de modo compartilhado são potencialmente maiores. Com isso, intensifica-se a necessidade de medidas que impeçam o compartilhamento dos produtos cosméticos, com a finalidade de diminuir o risco de uma infecção coletiva.   Palavras-chave: Cosméticos. Uso compartilhado. Contaminação.   Abstract Cosmetology is the science that encompasses and studies cosmetics, from initial concepts to their manufacture, becoming a multidisciplinary science. To guarantee a safe and effective use of cosmetics it is necessary to carry out analyzes to achieve a quality standard. When there is evidence of contamination by microorganisms in the cosmetic, several problems can be found, such as the occurrence of specific pathologies, causing high risks and complications to the health of the user. The objective of this scientific work was to qualitatively investigate through microbiological analysis the quality of cosmetic makeup products used in a shared way, using samples collected randomly in a retail store, which was selected because it is of great circulation, in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará. In this research, eight (8) samples collected during the period of October and November 2017 were analyzed. The analyzes that were carried out followed the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. As a result, a percentage of 87.5 % of microbial contamination was obtained, showing the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with only one of the eight samples analyzed being suitable for use following the limits of microbiological acceptance allowed by law. Based on these results it was possible to conclude that the contamination index of the lipstick samples that are used in a shared way are potentially higher. As a result, the need for measures to prevent the sharing of cosmetic products is intensified, in order to reduce the risk of a collective infection.   Keywords: Cosmetics. Shared Use. Introduction: Safe water is a precondition for health and development and is a basic human right, yet it is still denied to hundreds of millions of people throughout the developing world. Water-related diseases caused by insufficient safe water supplies, coupled with poor sanitation and hygiene, cause 3.4 million deaths a year, mostly in children. Methodology: The present study was conducted on 1,317 drinking water samples from various water sources in Amritsar district in northern India. All the samples were analyzed to assess bacteriological quality of water for presumptive coliform count by the multiple tube test. Results: A total of 42.9% (565/1,317) samples from various sources were found to be unfit for human consumption. Of the total 565 unsatisfactory samples, 253 were from submersible pumps, 197 were from taps of piped supply (domestic/public), 79 were from hand pumps, and 36 were from various other sources A significantly high level of contamination was observed in samples collected from submersible pumps (47.6%) and water tanks (47.3%), as these sources of water are more exposed and liable to contamination. Conclusions: Despite continuous efforts by the government, civil society, and the international community, over a billion people still do not have access to improved water resources. Bacteriological assessment of all sources of drinking should be planned and conducted on regular basis to prevent waterborne dissemination of diseases.

Natural water distillation can destroy and/or inactivate microorganisms that are sensitive to heat and ultraviolet radiation (UV). This method is currently used to provide fresh water in ships and in the desalination of brackish water. For the development of this research, a pilot-scale solar still was built and installed in the southern region of Brazil, in order to assess its efficiency in water disinfection, which was based on the most probable number (MPN) of total coliforms and  Escherichia coli, in addition to the DNA copy number of human adenovirus type 5 (HAdV-5) in raw, undistilled samples and in treated distilled water. Results showed that the distillation process removed 100% of total coliform and Escherichia coli and 4.5 log (99.997%) of HAdV-5, which meets the microbiological standards for drinking water according to national Brazilian regulations, as well as USEPA and HEALTH CANADA requirements.

The article presents a mixed-method study of 15 cross-sector partnerships (CSPs) in human services. The study sought to examine the activities, organizational characteristics, and relationships among organizations from the government, nonprofit, and business sectors at three interrelated stages of the partnership: inputs, processes, and outcomes. The findings indicate that socialization prior to entering CSPs is an important component of building the partnership and attaining its espoused goals. Power struggles inhibit the achievement of goals in CSPs, whereas joint decision making and reaching a consensus contribute to achieving goals and added value in terms of improving the quality of services and clients’ well-being. The article presents insights and highlights the dilemmas that CSPs face with regard to their operation and processes. The implications of these dilemmas for establishing and managing effective CSPs as well as for nonprofit policy are discussed.

ABSTRACT: The honey from Tiúba bees (Melipona fasciculata) is commercially important in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. However, the absence of any specific legislation for this kind of honey is an obstacle to its increased production and commercialization. Determining the microbiological and physical-chemical characteristics of different Tiúba honey can inform the elaboration of specific legislation. Thus, honey samples from two Water Catchment Areas in Maranhão (Munim and Pericumã, sample size 20 for each) were collected and submitted for microbiological analysis (total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms, molds and yeasts, Clostridium sulfite reducers and Salmonella sp.) and physical-chemical analysis (moisture content, reducing and non-reducing sugars, insoluble and soluble solids, ash content, acidity and pH). Most of honeys sampled were suitable for human consumption, except for one sample from Pericumã. Honeys from the two water catchment areas presented differences in some physicochemical characteristics, which can be attributed to the botanic, soil and climatic diversity of the two areas. Still, these Tiúba honey samples did not fall within the Brazilian legislation for Apis mellifera honey for some of the physical-chemical characteristics, and so is not properly regulated, thus reinforcing the need for specific legislation for this type of honey.

The aim of the research was to compare the microbiological quality of dairy products derived from organic and conventional farming. The test material consisted of milk and milk products (natural yoghurt, cream, curd cheese, rennet ripening cheese, milk). Investigated products were subjected to microbiological analysis and marked for the number of Enterococcus sp., Staphylococcus aureus, yeast and moulds, Escherichia coli as well as to state the presence of Salmonella sp. in them. All samples were free of Salmonella sp. Escherichia coli occurred in 2 samples of curd cheese from organic production. Products derived from organic and conventional production didn’t differ in the average number of microorganisms depending on the type of dairy product, with the exception of ripening rennet cheese, which showed a significant difference in the amount of Staphylococcus aureus.
