Objectives: Herbs are in use as medicine worldwide from the time immemorial. Many drugs derived from plant, animal or minerals are in use as medicine till date. This is a study on leaf extract of Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. (Euphorbiaceae) involving pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, activity against microbes and oxidation to substantiate its use. The leaf extracts were collected by successive soxhlation using solvents like petroleum ether, chloroform, benzene, acetone & ethanol. Chemicals present in the crude leaf extracts and isolated constituents were analyzed for both quality and quantity followed by TLC, UV–Visible Spectrophotometric analysis, HPTLC, Phytochemical tests and TLC examination confirmed to contain flavonoids in acetone, chloroform, aqueous and ethanol extract. The activity of Petroleum-ether, chloroform, acetone, alcoholic and aqueous extracts against the microbes was assessed by cup plate method. Okada & Okada method was followed to evaluate the DPPH free radical for aging property. The reducing, total antioxidant and peroxide radical for aging action of the extracts were assessed. The study confirmed significant antimicrobial and antioxidant property of the Putranjiva roxburghii Wall leaves may be for the presence of constituents like flavonoids, saponins, Phytosterols, favoring its traditional usage as medicine.

Plants have always been an important source of medicines since ancient times and seventy percent of the worldwide population still relies on one or other forms of traditional plant based medicine. Plant items have been essential for phytomedicines since days of yore. These can be derived from any part of the plants like bark, leaves, flowers, roots, fruits, seeds, etc. The present exploration has been conducted in the leaf of Senna tora performing various phytochemical tests to identify the secondary metabolites present in it such as alkaloids, flavonoids, sugars, glycosides, saponins, steroids, tannins, phenolic compounds, Vitamin C, proteins, amino acids and carbohydrates. The maximum phenolic content was presented in methanol solvents 1.41 ± 0.44 and lowest content was presented in petroleum ether extract 0.17 ± 0.21. Antibacterial activity were estimated and evaluated by using different types of extract against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Bacillus thuriengensis and Staphylococcus. Among these the maximum antibacterial activity (Zone of inhibition 19.0 mm) shown against Klebsiella pneumoniae in the extract of Petroleum ether. The minimum antibacterial activity observed (Zone of inhibition 11.0 mm) against Staphylococcus ceureus in extract of Ethanol extract of Senna tora (L.) Roxb. The herb <em>Acalypha indica </em>which belongs to Euphorbiaceae family has multiple medicinal properties which include anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, anti-helmintic, anti-cancerous, anti-venom, and neuro-protective activity. The present study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical, antimicrobial and anti-oxidant activity of <em>Acalypha indica </em>leaves extracts in different solvent extractions like methanol, hexane, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether. Fresh leaves of the plant were collected and shade dried. Dried leaves were milled to obtain powder. Powder was subjected to soxhlet extraction using solvents and extracts were successively obtained. Phytochemical analysis was conducted following standard methods.  Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of Alkaloids, Phenols, Saponins, Flavanoids and Amino acids. Leaf extract of methonal have shown the highest anti-oxidation capacity than hexane, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether. Anti-microbial activity has been performed on microbes like <em>Bacillus sps</em>, <em>E.coli,</em> <em>Psuedomonas sps</em> and <em>Streptococcus sps.</em> A highest value of zone of inhibition was found in methanol extract against <em>E.coli.</em> These results provide evidence that <em>Acalypha indica </em>leaf extract possesses vital phytochemicals, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Hence this plant can be studied further for drug analysis for finding potent medicines for diseases.

Objective: Medicinal plants are a source of great economic value all over the world and are on the front dusk of traditional medicine. Daturametel L, is one among the foresaid and this plant can be explored further as per its diversity of uses and on the basis of wide range of chemical compounds reported to be present in various parts of the plant. In the present investigation, Phyto-chemistry of D. metel has been analysed along with its antibacterial property.Methods: The selected plant leaves were collected and powdered. The bioactive compounds were extracted by using different solvents. Various phytochemical tests for alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, glycosides and amino acids were done accordingly with standard protocol of testing. The study also extends to view the anti-bacterial potential by determining inhibition of growth using agar well diffusion method.Results: Phytochemical analysis reflected the presence of compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and amino acids. It was noted that steroids and tannins are absent. Antimicrobial activity proves extract of ethanolis the most promising against the pathogens from the rest screened.Conclusion: Thearticle addresses, the undocumented knowledge regarding the phytochemical profile of D. metel which demand further exploration widely to serve Humanity. Antimicrobial potential of ethanol extract are very promising to deliver it as a pharmaceutical.

ABSTRAKPala adalah tanaman yang termasuk dalam jenis tanaman obat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis total kandungan fitokimia dan uji efek sedatif  dari ekstrak etanol, fraksi petroleum eter, etil asetat dan air daging buah pala. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan cara maserasi, kemudian ekstrak etanol yang diperoleh difraksinasi dengan cara partisi. Analisis fitokimia dilakukan dengan metode spektrofotometri UV-Vis sehingga diperoleh hasil kandungan total fenolik ekstrak etanol, fraksi petroleum eter, etil asetat dan air daging buah pala secara berturut-turut adalah 26,284 μg/mL; 29,203 μg/mL; 28,725 μg/mL; 24,904 μg/mL. Total flavonoid secara berturut-turut adalah 9,999 μg/mL; 13,095 μg/mL; 13,729 μg/mL; 10,475 μg/mL. Total tanin secara berturut-turut adalah 16,642 μg/mL; 16,571 μg/mL; 16,357 μg/mL; 10,428 μg/mL. Uji efek sedatif dilakukan dengan metode traction test  dan diperoleh hasil ekstrak etanol dan ketiga fraksi memiliki pengaruh efek sedatif pada dosis 300 mg/kgBB dan 500 mg/kgBB dan dosis yang paling baik dalam memberikan pengaruh efek sedatif adalah 500 mg/kgBB. ABSTRACT Nutmeg is a plant that is included in a type of medicinal plant. This study aimed to analyze the total phytochemical content and test the sedative effect of ethanol extract, petroleum ether fraction, ethyl acetate and nutmeg pulp. Extraction was carried out by maceration, then the ethanol extract obtained was fractionated by partitioning. Phytochemical analysis was carried out using UV-Vis spectrophotometry method so that the total phenolic content of ethanol extract, petroleum ether fraction, ethyl acetate and nutmeg water was obtained, respectively, 26.284 μg/mL; 29,203 μg/mL; 28.725 μg/mL; 24,904 μg/mL. The total flavonoids were 9.999 μg/mL, respectively; 13.095 μg/mL; 13,729 μg/mL; 10,475 μg/mL. The total tannins were 16,642 μg/mL, respectively; 16,571 μg/mL; 16,357 μg/mL; 10,428 μg/mL. The sedative effect test was carried out by the traction test method and the results of the ethanol extract and the three fractions had a sedative effect at a dose of 300 mg/kgBB and 500 mg/kgBB and the best dose in giving a sedative effect was 500 mg/kgBB.

This study performed the phytochemical screening and bioactivity of Celosia argentea leaves. The phytochemical profile of hexane (Hex), ethyl acetate (AcOEt) and methanolic (MeOH) extracts of C. argentea leaves was observed by Thin Layer Chromatography and spectrophotometric analysis. In the susceptibility test, the disk-diffusion technique was performed. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was assessed by microdilution. Minimum Microbic Concentration (MMC) was determined in the extracts which presented MIC. Antioxidant activities were measured using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picril-hidrazil (DPPH), determination of reducing power and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The results showed a higher content of phenolic compounds (252.02 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g) in the extract AcOEt, and of tannins (103.72 ± 0.004 mg/EAT/g) in MeOH; this was effective against Micrococcus luteus (inhibition of 24.7 ± 0.6 mm). MIC and CMM of the AcOEt for M. luteus were 0.06 and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively. The MeOH extract eliminated 70.4 ± 0.03% of DPPH radical, whereas AcOEt had greater reducing power (289.23 ± 0.05 mg AA/g) and TAC at a concentration of 250 µg/mL (89.6%). This study revealed that C. argentea has phytochemicals with bactericidal and fungicidal potential, in addition to elevated antioxidant power. Key words: antimicrobial, antioxidant, bioactivity.

Premna serratifolia, commonly known as Arogo in Tentena-Sulawesi, is a popular vegetable. As a promising herbal tea and food ingredient, further investigation is required to find the best knowledge for medicinal use of P. serratifolia leaves. This research investigated the antioxidant activity of the ethanol (EEPS) and water (WEPS) extracts of P. serratifolia leaves, based on their scavenging activities on DPPH radicals and their reducing capacities (CuPRAC, total antioxidant/phosphomolybdenum, and ferric thiocyanate reducing power assays). The DNA-protecting effect by EEPS was tested using pBR322 plasmid DNA against •OH radical-induced damage. The inhibition potentials of both extracts against several enzymes related to metabolic diseases (α-glucosidase, α-amylase, xanthine oxidase, and protease) were evaluated. The phytochemical analysis was conducted by an LC-QTOF-MS/MS technique. EEPS proved to be a better antioxidant and had higher phenolic content compared to WEPS. EEPS demonstrated a protective effect on DNA with recovery percentage linearly correlated with EEPS concentrations. Strong inhibition on α-glucosidase and α-amylase was observed for EEPS; however, EEPS and WEPS showed weak inhibitions on xanthine oxidase and protease. LC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis identified seven main components in EEPS, namely scroside E, forsythoside A and forsythoside B, lavandulifolioside, diosmin, nobilin D, campneoside I, and isoacteoside. These components may be responsible for the observed enzymes inhibitions and antioxidant properties. Premna serratifolia leaves can be an appropriate choice for the development of nutraceutical and drug preparations.

Objective: To evaluate the anticancer and antioxidant activity of medicinal plant Clidemia hirta extracted in different solvents.Methods: Crude extracts were prepared from the leaves of Clidemia hirta using ethanol, petroleum ether and chloroform solvents. Anticancer activities and antioxidant properties were assayed using standard yellow dye 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay respectively.Results: We found that the ethanol extract had higher inhibition activities against Dalton’s lymphoma ascites (DLA) cancer cell line, 50% DLA cell line inhibition at 68µg/ml, while 50% inhibition by petroleum ether and chloroform extracts were at 160µg/ml and 172µg/ml, respectively. The antioxidant activity requires5µg/ml of ethanol extract to trap 50% of DPPH (IC50), whereas the positive control ascorbic acid trapped 50% of DPPH (IC50) at 3.5µg/ml.Conclusion: The prepared leaf extracts with different solvents of Clidemia hirta showed the antiproliferative and antioxidant activity in dose-dependent manner. Further works is required to identify the biologically active chemical constituents, responsible for cancer cell growth inhibition from this plant.

The genus Hardwickia of the family Caesalpiniaceae is represented by a single species Hardwickia binata Roxb. The present study deals with screening of secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity of different extracts of leaf and bark of Hardwickia binata. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of various secondary metabolites viz. alkaloids, saponins, phenolics compound, tannins, phenols and steroids. Both leaf and bark extracts scavenged free radicals signicantly. Whereas aqueous extract of bark and ethanol extract of leaf exhibited good antioxidant property

The present era of scientific research has witnessed an enumerable amount of evidences to showcase the immense potential of medicinal plants. In the present investigation, the phytochemical analysis of Phlogacanthus pubinervius T. Anderson., Adhatoda vasica (L.) Nees,Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus Nees, Phlogacanthus curviflorus (Wall.) Nees, and Ruellia tuberosa L. was carried out for the different plants extracted with methanol. Analysis was carried out to estimate the quantity of phenols, carbohydrates, tannins, flavonoids and proteins. The antioxidant property of these plants were analysed using DPPH method. The concentration of the plant samples required to decrease the DPPH concentration by 50% was calculated by interpolation from linear regression analysis and denoted IC50 value (µg/ml). The qualitative analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, proteins, carbohydrate and phenols in all the sample extracts. The highest amount of tannins and phenols was observed in P. thyrsiflorus. P. pubinervius (77.83%), A. vasica (74.81%), P. curviflorus (94.20%), and R. tuberosa (70.78%) which showed highest antioxidant activity of DPPH-scavenging at 150 µg/ml of methanol extract. The high percent of scavenging activities of those plants add value to their medicinal properties. The presence of the high amount of phytochemical compounds suggests that the plants have high amount of medicinal compounds and can be extensively used to extract the natural compounds.

The aim of the current investigation was to identify bioactive secondary metabolites and compare the phytoconstituents and antioxidant profile of different leaf extracts of Citrus assamensis. Preliminary phytochemical screening of chloroform extract of C. assamensis indicated the presence of alkaloids, phytosterols, phenols, tannins, glycosides, saponins and flavonoids, whereas the methanol and ethanol extracts were found to contain no saponin. The screenings of the plant revealed that, the amount of phenols was higher in methanol extract, while the ethanol extract was found to be rich in flavonoid and total antioxidant capacity. Methanol extract of C. assamensis leaf showed potent nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity having IC50 value of 137.85 and 85 μg/ml, respectively. The chloroform extract was found to be highly effective in DPPH free radical scavenging, reducing power, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase activity when compared to the standard. In case of catalase assay, all the C. assemensis leaf extracts showed highest activity at 50μg/ml. In most cases, lowest concentration of test groups showed significant (**p<0.01 & *p<0.05) peroxidase activity.Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Sci. 17(1): 29-36, 2018 (June)
