This study aims to examine and analyze the negative stigma of Bajo tribe and its impact on the existence of the local culture of Bajo tribe. Data collection techniques are conducted through in-depth interviews, document studies and focused discussions. Data analysis is done through data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results show that the Bajo tribe is still regarded as an underdeveloped tribe, always viewed as a wild, unruly, rough, stubborn and introvert. Bajo tribe is also viewed as part of society that is still paternalisitic and pragmatic, alienated, isolated, and left behind, has a low civilization that must be initiated with various empowerment programs. Bajo tribe is often also imaged as a prototype of willful society, because they reject development, even in the past Bajo tribe in Bungin was once accused of being the next generation of Darul Islam / Tentara Islam Indonesia (DI / TII). The bias of negative imagery results the change in mentality and cultural values of the local Bajo tribe into marginal positions. The mentality of Bajo society is now transformed into a consumptive society and false capitalism. Currently, there are many local wisdom of Bajo tribe who experienced weakening, even the oral tradition began to experience extinction. While the older generation who understand the culture of Bajo also diminish due to the age factor, and many younger generations of Bajo who no longer know and understand the local culture of Bajo, due to the weakness of inheritance system and cultural transformation of the older generation to the younger generation.

This article examines how community has been reinterpreted and remade among local residents in relation to the development of tourism in Zhujiajiao, China. Focusing on the narratives and practices of long-term residents, it was found that people generally maintain a resilient bond with their community in Zhujiajiao despite profound local changes. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the article brings to light the complicated and contextual meanings of community that are constantly under negotiation. We argue that the notion of community is reconstructed through narratives of the past, everyday social interactions, and material connections between people and places. Meanwhile, the process of remaking Zhujiajiao community is shaped by cultural values and situated within wider structural conditions. In this way, the article contributes to debates on the analytical importance of relationality and sociality in the recent rethinking of community from a Chinese perspective. It also argues for the need to develop more nuanced understandings of community in contemporary China beyond viewing it as a form of urban governance by focusing on residents’ narratives and practices.

This study aimed to find the purpose of communication ritual within Remo of the Blater community in Madura, which helped to maintain traditions in the Madurese society. Remo celebration has existed in Madura for generations, since the Dutch colonisation era until now. This research employed the descriptive qualitative method. The informant of this research was the Blater communities in Bangkalan and Sampang districts as Remo performers. The methods of analysis were observations, in-depth interviews, and primary data collected from field research. We concluded that Remo in Madura, especially in Bangkalan Regency, still exists despite the rapid influence of global culture and information technology. Remo as a celebration tradition in Bangkalan Regency is a face-to-face ritual communication with symbolic power and as well as a ritual media for the Blater community in Madura. Remo celebration exists as a traditional medium of ritual communication to build a good relationship in the Madurese Blater community. In terms of local cultural values, Remo has a positive impact that contributes to the existence of the local tradition of Madura.

Latinos in the U.S. face a high burden of cancer, making it important to deliver evidence-based cancer prevention and screening information (CPSI) on social media to this group. However, there is a dearth in scholarship exploring how Latinos engage with and act upon cancer (mis)information encountered on social media. Cultural values may influence how Latinos engage with multi-lingual CPSI shared on Facebook. This study sought to understand how and why U.S. Latinos engage with and act upon CPSI on Facebook. During one-on-one, in-depth interviews, participants (n=20) logged onto their Facebook account alongside the researcher, typed “cancer” in the search bar, and discussed CPSI they engaged with during the past 12 months. Engagement prompted questions regarding the reasons for engagement and further action. Computer screen and audio were recorded. Interviews were analyzed thematically; CPSI was analyzed via content analysis. Participants mainly engaged with CPSI by viewing/reading content. Engagement was most common when individuals had personal relationships to the poster, when posts included videos/images, and when information promoted popular Latin American foods. Engagement often led to varying levels of action, both online and offline. Not all decisions were evidence-based, and some were potentially harmful (e.g. canceling mammogram after engaging with misinformation). Findings highlight the complex and interrelated ways in which cultural values, source factors and message factors contribute to engagement with health content on social media, which may lead individuals to bypass evidence-based procedures in favor of unproven approaches. Specific interdisciplinary recommendations to address these issues will be discussed.

This research was motivated by the formation of a conservative attitude and consistency of the Tengger Wonokitri tribe in carrying out traditional rituals and living habits according to ancestral teachings. This consistent life attitude is influenced by the existence of the dukun Pandhita who is known as the leader of traditional rituals. Moreover, Dukun Pandhita gives social control to his community. In the reality of Tengger tribe Wonokitri's life, people face the influence of modernity and tourism. Therefore, local cultural preservation efforts are essential to do. This study aims to determine and describe the role of the dukun Pandhita in social control as an effort to preserve the local culture of the Tengger tribe in Wonokitri Village. By using qualitative research methods and ethnographic approaches, researcher gain the data. The technique used to determine the informant is the snowball technique. The results showed, in the effort to preserve the local culture, Pandhita shamans planted value and preventive through traditional rituals and daily living habits. This article describes the aspects of toponymy and cultural values of village names in Bojong. The research method used descriptive, with observation, interview, and content analysis techniques. The research was carried out in Bojong, Karangtengah district, with the research objects of Ciburial, Ciroyom, and Kaum villages. The first result is, the three names of villages found in Bojong are categorized into three aspects of toponymy, namely the physical, social and cultural aspects. Secondly, there are cultural values in the stories of the three village names based on beliefs, social or individual interactions in groups and cultural values that relate to people's occupation from the past to the present. Therefore, the Village Head of Bojong can utilize local culture as a village asset.Keywords: Toponymy aspects, cultural values.

This article discusses the Minangkabau kingdom and its existence as the origin of the Jambi Sultanate. This issue is considered important because at this time there are many people who do not understand the relationship between the kingdoms in the past, which regions are currently included in the kingdoms of these kingdoms. The results of this study are expected to provide an explanation of the main problems proposed and so contribute to the development of knowledge, especially about the local history of Jambi and West Sumatra. Besides, it can be used as material for consideration by related institutions in order to preserve historical and cultural values and for regional development and development. By using a multidimensional approach and supported by the application of historical methods that refer to scientific historical research procedures, it is hoped that the questions raised in the formulation of the problem will be objectively and systematically expressed. The results showed that the Minangkabau area was an old area that had been inhabited by humans at least since the Batu Muda era around 2000 years BC. In the district of 50 Kota there are many Menhir findings which are thought to be from that period. The Minangkabau area is the area where Sang Sapurba's title Datuk Maharaja Diraja descended which in oral tradition is considered the ancestor of the Minangkabau tribe and the Malay family in general and also as a figure who descended the kings who ruled on the island of Sumatra, especially the Malay countries. In the context of Jambi and Minangkabau relations, it can be said that the kings who ruled in the Jambi kingdom were descended from the Minangkabau Kingdom. Putri Selaro Pinang Masak, who in the Jambi royal legend is seen as the founder of the Jambi kingdom, was the son of Ananggawarman who ruled in Pagaruyung from 1376 - 1417 AD. As an old country, Minangkabau has a customary and cultural system that affects the surrounding area, including the Jambi area. A source from the Jambi Malay Customary Institute said that the one who composed Jambi's customs was Datuk Perpatih Nan Sabatang from Pagaruyung, while those from Bandar Jambi were Datuk Ketemanggungan

AbstrakFolklor yang menghasilkan tradisi lisan merupakan perwujudan budaya yang lahirdari pengalaman kelompok masyarakat. Salah satu bentuk tradisi lisan adalah ungkapan yangmengandung unsur budaya lokal dalam konstruksinya yang tidak dimiliki budaya lainnya.Ungkapan idiomatis memberikan warna pada bahasa melalui penggambaran mental. Dalambahasa Perancis, ungkapan dapat berupa locution dan expression. Perbedaan motif acuansuatu ungkapan dapat terlihat dari pengaruh budaya masyarakat pengguna bahasa. Sebuahleksem tidak selalu didefinisikan melalui unsur minimal, tidak juga melalui kata-kata,baik kata dasar atau kata kompleks, namun dapat melalui kata-kata beku yang maknanyatetap. Hubungan analogis dari makna tambahan yang ada pada suatu leksem muncul dariidentifikasi semem yang sama. The difference motivesreference of an expression can be seen from the influence of the cultural community thelanguage users. A lexeme is not always defined through a minimal element, nor throughwords, either basic or complex words, but can be through the frost words whose meaningsare fixed. The analogical connection of the additional meanings is on a lexeme arises fromthe identification of the same meaning. This article intends to identify and to describe the unique structure and the managing style that owns primordial characteristics, that is giving significance to kinship, religion, and local Bugis cultural values, which made up the cultural system of PT. Hadji Kalla family business. Theoritically, this research was inspired from Weberian perspective on the ideal types of bureaucracy, that observes organizations (in this case is the family business) as one of the socio-cultural phenomena which is neutral and value-free, that is place aside its subjective aspects. The research was conducted in two locations, the head office and one of the branch offices using qualitative approach that relies on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The results of the research shows that the family business of PT. Hadji Kalla that has advanced into national level still prioritizes kinship, ethnicity, and religious aspects in the daily activities of the company. The value even take parts in providing the company’s colour to the urban societies in various districts where the company stands. This means that although the society has undergone transformations, it doesn’t mean that the primordial value, and the elements that exist outside of businesses (such as kinship, big men, religion, cultural values, and interest) do not influence the activities that are held in formal organizations. Therefore, the interventions of subjective aspects will always appear, followed with the application of the modern management system that is implemented by PT. Hadji Kalla company.

Gambuh as the performing art in Malay area became one of the cultural transformation evidences of the close relation between Java and Malay. The history of gambuh performance in Malay area recorded in the archipelago’s manuscripts, one of them is a manuscript entitled Surat Gambuh which is being the collection of Leiden University Library. This paper attempts to examine the contents of the manuscript in order to reconstruct the gambuh performance art in Malay and also trace the historical aspects. As far as the research had been done, there have been no studies of this manuscript so it is necessary to first transliterate it using a critical method. Furthermore, the historical aspects are explored using a historical approach by adding data from other texts of Panji. The analysis result of the reflection of Malay gambuh performance rules and historical aspects show that there is a transformation of work from oral tradition to written tradition, the cultural acculturation between Java and Malay, and the Islamic influence behind Malay gambuh.

Abstract Can forgotten stories from the past inform a city’s future? As older adults continue to live longer and comprise more of the population than ever before, the suitability of gentrifying spaces for older adults aging in place is increasingly important. Critical theories of gentrification argue that remembering the experiences of older adults in this context - experiences of suffering, resilience, and structural violence - is essential to promote changes in support aging in place. In this study, we tell a story of individual experiences, structural violence, and aging in the ongoing gentrification of one neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. We construct this narrative through a qualitative analysis of 1,500 local newspaper articles from 1950 to the present day and 10 in-depth interviews with ex-residents of the neighborhood aged 65-87. Drawing on the theory of planetary rent gaps, we frame gentrification as a class struggle between property-owners and working class residents. We highlight the city government’s role as a facilitator for property-owners through projects including the Model City initiative, preparation for the 1996 Olympics, and ongoing development surrounding the Atlanta BeltLine. We show how these projects have affected the prospects for aging in place in general and, specifically, by affecting access to healthcare services. We share this story in an effort to combat the politics of forgetting and to inform a richer, more inclusive, and more equitable future for gentrifying spaces.
