Reviewing and citing literature are essential elements determining the quality of academic texts such as research articles (RAs); however, it is not easy to review and cite literature especially when writing in a foreign language such as Indonesians writing in English. The purpose of this study is to investigate the review and citation style in English RA introductions published in medical science journals written by Indonesian and international authors. Forty English RA introductions were analysed on the review and citation style and linguistic features such as tenses and citation type. The results show that there are more similarities than differences in the review and citation style and linguistic features of RA introductions in the two different medical journals. However, Indonesian writers in medical sciences should include negative evaluation when reviewing and citing other’s work in their English RA introductions to be successful if submitted to an international journal.

The currently observed development of medical science results from the constant search for innovative solutions to improve the health and quality of life of patients. Particular attention is focused on the design of a new generation of materials with a high degree of biocompatibility and tolerance towards the immune system. In addition, apart from biotolerance, it is important to ensure appropriate mechanical and technological properties of materials intended for intra-body applications. Knowledge of the above parameters becomes the basis for considerations related to the possibilities of choosing the appropriate polymer materials. The researchers' interest, as evidenced by the number of available publications, is attracted by nanobiocomposites based on chitosan and carbon nanotubes, which, due to their properties, enable integration with the tissues of the human body. Nanosystems can be used in many areas of medicine. They constitute an excellent base for use as dressing materials, as they exhibit antimicrobial properties. In addition, they can be carriers of drugs and biological macromolecules and can be used in gene therapy, tissue engineering, and construction of biosensors. For this reason, potential application areas of chitosan-carbon nanotube nanocomposites in medical sciences are presented in this publication, considering the characteristics of the system components.

Background: The health transformation plan (HTP) was implemented in April 2014 in university hospitals to provide equitable access to healthcare, improve the quality of care, and protect patients against high costs of hospitals. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate out of pocket (OOP) payment by inpatients after the health sector evolution plan (HSEP) and its effective factors in hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Science. Methods: In this study, descriptive and cross-sectional research design was utilized. 277 patients at 5 hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences were selected via simple random approach. Checklists and hospital bills were used to collect data. Then the data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0. Results: The results indicated that OOP was 18.71% of the total hospitals expenditure. There was a significant relationship among insurance status, location, and OOP (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The OOP rate of hospitalized patients was not in accordance with the goal set in the HSEP. Thus, policymakers and managers should take serious measures to decrease out-of-pocket payments.

To disseminate academic knowledge, scholars publish their research in the form of journal articles, whose content is sketched in an abstract with a conventional rhetorical organization. This chapter reports a study that aims to examine and assess the organization of research article abstracts in terms of move units. The move structure of 42 abstracts of English research papers written by Algerian researchers and published in one of the Algerian language journals was scrutinized. The study follows Hyland's analytic model, comprising five rhetorical moves: introduction, purpose, method, product, and conclusion. The findings of the study indicate that the writers predominantly employ the pattern introduction-purpose, with some inconsistencies in using the other moves. On the basis of identifying the existing deviations from the predictable generic arrangement of abstracts, the importance of raising genre awareness among EFL writers has been highlighted as a means to enhance the quality of published discourse.

Background: Quality is a key factor in the distinction of services, and it is a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage to increase productiveness and patient satisfaction. The identification of strengths and weaknesses in quality of provided services can help to recognize priorities and develop improvement strategies. Objectives: Using importance-performance analysis (IPA) method, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of services provided in hospitals affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Methods: Using stratified random sampling, this descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study included 307 patients admitted to five Educational Hospitals affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in 2016. Data collection tool was a standard questionnaire proposed by Tomes & Chee Peng Ng (1995), which included demographic information and questions regarding the quality of services provided in seven factors. In addition to IPA, data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s correlation, and chi squared test in SPSS software version 21. Results: Total scores of quality factors were estimated as “important” in our research. In quality performance, “food”, “physical environment” and “dignity” factors were estimated as “relatively inappropriate” by mean scores of 2.50 ± 0.95, 2.90 ± 0.97 and 2.94 ± 1.05, respectively. These three factors were located in the second region of the IPA matrix. While the other four factors, including “empathy”, “relationship of mutual respect”, “understanding of illness” and “religious needs,” with mean scores higher than 3 were estimated as “appropriate” and located in the first region of this matrix. In all quality factors, scores of performance were lower than importance, and the gap between importance and performance in these seven factors ranged from 0.82 to 1.52. There was a significant relationship between age and education of respondents with the quality of services. Conclusions: Given that the largest gap was related to the tangible dimensions of quality (including food and physical environment) and in order to improve the quality of services and competitive position, hospital managers must consider tangible dimension as a priority. The current study aims at investigating and comparing the linguistic features of lexical items, tense usage, and voice choice in a sample of ten Egyptian-authored linguistics research article (RA) literature reviews (LRs) in local and international English-medium journals between 2013 and 2019. The paper followed a combination of genre-based and corpus-driven approaches, analyzing the data qualitatively and quantitatively. It adopted the state-of-the-art #LancsBox. The analysis revealed interesting differences between both sub-corpora in the use of lexis, especially in Moves 2 and 3. It was found that lexis varied to reflect the different rhetorical functions of the LR. They also differed in the use of the past simple tense. However, both sub-corpora agreed on using the present simple tense and active voice the most. This paper contributes to the literature by providing a helpful guide for Egyptian and novice researchers to use the linguistic features more appropriately in their LRs. It has pedagogical implications for designing EAP and ESP courses. Further studies on larger corpora are needed to analyze the linguistic features and highlight variations across genres, disciplines, and languages.

Meta-discourse is one of the linguistic features that have gotten considerable attention in writing a research article abstract recently. It is because the meta-discourse serves as a textual and interpersonal marker that can help readers to organize, classify, interpret, evaluate, and react to the contents of a propositions or meanings of sentences in the research article abstracts. However, Indonesian authors still have a problem in the use of meta-discourse based on its function in writing a research article abstract that meets to reputable international journals. The purpose of this study is to help improve the linguistic feature quality of research article abstracts written by Indonesian lecturers in social sciences and humanities in terms of the appropriate use of meta-discourse devices. This study used three stages of genre-based method following Hyland (2003): modeling, joint construction, and independent construction to mentor 20 lecturers in improving their research article abstract quality in terms of the appropriate use of meta-discourse devices in the sentences. The meta-discourse devices in the lecturers’ research article abstracts was evaluated following the frameworks of meta-discourse based on its function as suggested by Hyland (2005). The result revealed that there is an important improvement on the linguistic feature quality of Indonesian lecturers’ research article abstracts in terms of the appropriate use of meta-discourse devices. It implies that genre-based mentoring method has been quite effective in helping Indonesian lecturers in social sciences and humanities in writing their RA abstracts in using meta-discourse devices for a reputable international journal.

This study investigated the influence of a computer voice conferencing environment (Wimba) on learners’ anxiety when speaking in a foreign language. Several instruments were used for data collection: A demographic survey, the Computer Anxiety Index (CAIN), the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), the Wimba Anxiety Scale, student interviews, and a rubric developed for the evaluation of risk-taking. Results indicate that there is a strong potential for the reduction of anxiety associated with the Wimba environment. This was due to the elimination of the time pressure of the classroom and opportunity to edit student contributions. Increased risk-taking, in terms of the quantity and quality of the output produced by students, and reduced fear of negative evaluation were also found in the electronic environment. The conditions of the facility where the Wimba environment is accessed, i.e. a language laboratory, were found to hinder Wimba’s anxiety-reducing potential.

The abstract is an important part of a research article; it is a research summary that must be attached, presented together with the research article. Therefore, the quality of an abstract is explicitly significant. This article aims to determine the similarities and differences of the rhetorical moves and linguistic features of abstracts of local, national, and international journals by Indonesian authors in the field of English language teaching. The method used is descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods or mix-methods by analyzing the communicative objectives and linguistic features of the abstract parts of research articles. The results show that the majority of Ijal abstracts have five moves while the majority of Edu-Ling abstracts have only three moves. In general, active sentences are used more dominantly used than passive sentences in all moves of all three groups of abstracts, and present tense is far more frequently used in Ijal and Teflin abstracts but past tense is more frequently used in Edu-Ling abstracts while that-complement clause in Move-4 of Ijal abstracts is the most frequently used among the three groups of abstracts. It can also be concluded that Teflin article abstracts are more similar to those of Ijal articles than to Edu-Ling articles in all aspects. This is probably because Teflin authors are more experienced in writing journal articles than those of Edu-Ling articles.

Objective: Communicating with patients is not only among the principles of care, but it is considered as one of the key roles of nurses. As nurses are skilled in other clinical skills, their communication skills should also be adequate. The aim of this study is to determine nurses’ communication skills.Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in 2015 in hospitals affiliated to Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. 215 nurses participated in the study using census method. Data was collected using valid and reliable communication skills (α=0.885). The quality of communication skills was classified on three levels: poor, average, and good.Results: Quality of communication skills of 120 (55.8%) of nurses was weak, 95 (44.2%) moderate, and there was no good evaluation (0%). The communication skills of most nurses were weak in the areas of conscious start (75.8%), verbal and nonverbal communication skills (86.5%), inner and outer harmony (92.6%), respect for the patient (94.4%) and the unconditional acceptance of patient (100%). There was a significant relationship between the nurses’ educational level, mean age and work experience with quality of communication skills (p <0.05).Conclusion: The results indicate the low ability of nurses in terms of communication skills with the patient. It seems that teaching communication skills, as well as the revision of management, description of job responsibilities, increasing job autonomy and decision-making power for nurses can be the effective ways to improve nurse-patient communication which leads to enhancing the quality of care from patients.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(2) 2018 p.275-281

In the present study, two groups of German undergraduates taking a course in English Linguistics at a midwestern German university were compared in terms of their attitudes towards translanguaging, their translanguaging behaviour during foreign-language academic writing processes, and the quality of their foreign-language texts. One group was taught with a translanguaging teaching approach, the other group was taught monolingually in English. Students in the translanguaging group became aware of the benefits translanguaging can have during foreign-language academic writing processes. Students’ translanguaging behaviour during foreign-language academic writing is discussed in two case studies. Importantly, more students in the translanguaging than in the English group improved their ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information in academic texts, a finding that underscores the didactic importance of translanguaging in tertiary education.
