The currently observed development of medical science results from the constant search for innovative solutions to improve the health and quality of life of patients. Particular attention is focused on the design of a new generation of materials with a high degree of biocompatibility and tolerance towards the immune system. In addition, apart from biotolerance, it is important to ensure appropriate mechanical and technological properties of materials intended for intra-body applications. Knowledge of the above parameters becomes the basis for considerations related to the possibilities of choosing the appropriate polymer materials. The researchers' interest, as evidenced by the number of available publications, is attracted by nanobiocomposites based on chitosan and carbon nanotubes, which, due to their properties, enable integration with the tissues of the human body. Nanosystems can be used in many areas of medicine. They constitute an excellent base for use as dressing materials, as they exhibit antimicrobial properties. In addition, they can be carriers of drugs and biological macromolecules and can be used in gene therapy, tissue engineering, and construction of biosensors. For this reason, potential application areas of chitosan-carbon nanotube nanocomposites in medical sciences are presented in this publication, considering the characteristics of the system components.

Background: The health transformation plan (HTP) was implemented in April 2014 in university hospitals to provide equitable access to healthcare, improve the quality of care, and protect patients against high costs of hospitals. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate out of pocket (OOP) payment by inpatients after the health sector evolution plan (HSEP) and its effective factors in hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Science. Methods: In this study, descriptive and cross-sectional research design was utilized. 277 patients at 5 hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences were selected via simple random approach. Checklists and hospital bills were used to collect data. Then the data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0. Results: The results indicated that OOP was 18.71% of the total hospitals expenditure. There was a significant relationship among insurance status, location, and OOP (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The OOP rate of hospitalized patients was not in accordance with the goal set in the HSEP. Thus, policymakers and managers should take serious measures to decrease out-of-pocket payments.

Combinations of biopolymers with nanostructured carbon materials have been the subject of interest of many scientists in recent years. Particularly significant are nanocomposites made of chitosan, which is a linear aminopolysaccharide obtained in the process of deacetylation of chitin, and graphene oxide (GO). These systems, due to the atypical properties of both components such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility with human tissues and organs as well as bacteriostaticity, are characterised by a wide range of biomedical applications. They may be used in emergency medicine as dressing materials which accelerate wound healing, as well as carriers of drugs/genes and biological macromolecules, for example proteins, peptides and nucleic acids. In addition, CS-GO systems can potentially be used in regenerative medicine as scaffolds for cell culture. For this reason, the current publication presents the possibilities of the application of chitosan–graphene oxide nanocomposites in medicine considering the characteristics of the system components.

UNSTRUCTURED Anatomy has been the cornerstone of medical education for centuries. However, given advances in the Internet of Things, this landscape has been augmented in the past decade, shifting towards a greater focus on adopting digital technologies. Indeed, digital Anatomy is emerging as a new discipline and represents an opportunity to embrace advances in digital health technologies and apply them to the domain of modern medical sciences. This is not only a result of a multidisciplinary exercise but an active response to the change of medical education landscape and the rapid development of medical technology. Notably, the use of augmented and virtual reality as well as mobile and platforms and 3D printing in modern anatomy has dramatically increased in the last 5 years. It has not only revolutionized undergraduate anatomy education but is shifting the paradigm of pre- and vocational training for medical professionals, advancing healthcare. This review outlines the emerging area of digital anatomy and summarises recent practice-changing studies in medical science education and research. Importantly, we present a SWOT analysis of the opportunities and challenges for incorporating digital anatomy, discussing both the strength and weakness and the underlying threats and opportunities for educators, researchers, and the new generation of health professionals. In so doing this review will serve to identify an important role for digital anatomy to play in both the learning and teaching of medicine and health sciences as well as its practice, prompting new questions for future investigations.

Background: Quality is a key factor in the distinction of services, and it is a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage to increase productiveness and patient satisfaction. The identification of strengths and weaknesses in quality of provided services can help to recognize priorities and develop improvement strategies. Objectives: Using importance-performance analysis (IPA) method, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of services provided in hospitals affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Methods: Using stratified random sampling, this descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study included 307 patients admitted to five Educational Hospitals affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in 2016. Data collection tool was a standard questionnaire proposed by Tomes & Chee Peng Ng (1995), which included demographic information and questions regarding the quality of services provided in seven factors. In addition to IPA, data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s correlation, and chi squared test in SPSS software version 21. Results: Total scores of quality factors were estimated as “important” in our research. In quality performance, “food”, “physical environment” and “dignity” factors were estimated as “relatively inappropriate” by mean scores of 2.50 ± 0.95, 2.90 ± 0.97 and 2.94 ± 1.05, respectively. These three factors were located in the second region of the IPA matrix. While the other four factors, including “empathy”, “relationship of mutual respect”, “understanding of illness” and “religious needs,” with mean scores higher than 3 were estimated as “appropriate” and located in the first region of this matrix. In all quality factors, scores of performance were lower than importance, and the gap between importance and performance in these seven factors ranged from 0.82 to 1.52. There was a significant relationship between age and education of respondents with the quality of services. Conclusions: Given that the largest gap was related to the tangible dimensions of quality (including food and physical environment) and in order to improve the quality of services and competitive position, hospital managers must consider tangible dimension as a priority. Objective: Communicating with patients is not only among the principles of care, but it is considered as one of the key roles of nurses. As nurses are skilled in other clinical skills, their communication skills should also be adequate. The aim of this study is to determine nurses’ communication skills.Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in 2015 in hospitals affiliated to Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. 215 nurses participated in the study using census method. Data was collected using valid and reliable communication skills (α=0.885). The quality of communication skills was classified on three levels: poor, average, and good.Results: Quality of communication skills of 120 (55.8%) of nurses was weak, 95 (44.2%) moderate, and there was no good evaluation (0%). The communication skills of most nurses were weak in the areas of conscious start (75.8%), verbal and nonverbal communication skills (86.5%), inner and outer harmony (92.6%), respect for the patient (94.4%) and the unconditional acceptance of patient (100%). There was a significant relationship between the nurses’ educational level, mean age and work experience with quality of communication skills (p <0.05).Conclusion: The results indicate the low ability of nurses in terms of communication skills with the patient. It seems that teaching communication skills, as well as the revision of management, description of job responsibilities, increasing job autonomy and decision-making power for nurses can be the effective ways to improve nurse-patient communication which leads to enhancing the quality of care from patients.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(2) 2018 p.275-281

Background: April 21, 2021 marks the centenary of the birth of Irina N. Blokhina – a world-famous scientist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the USSR State Prize, and Honorary Citizen of the city of Nizhny Novgorod. For 44 years, Dr. Blokhina headed the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. The objective of this paper is to reflect and analyze the historical role of the personality in the development of new research areas, achievement of outstanding scientific results, and education of younger generations of scientists on the example of the life path of Dr. Blokhina, whose name is associated with the most productive times in the history of the institute. Materials and methods: In preparing the present article, we analyzed extensive archival materials, scientific and media publications, and memoirs of contemporaries. Findings: We describe how the breadth of scientific outlook of this eminent scientist, her deep and comprehensive erudition, and a constant thirst for new knowledge allowed her to see and effectively solve the most pressing problems of fundamental science and practical health care. Professor Blokhina devoted her entire life to medical science by developing priority science trends in biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, biotechnology, and molecular biology. Conclusions: The personality of Academician Irina N. Blokhina demonstrates how purposefulness, creative attitude to assigned tasks, and a high degree of responsibility enable a person to achieve top results in science and life. Our findings may be particularly useful in education of the younger generation of scientists.

BackgroundA depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, thoughts, and behaviors. It affects the way a person eats, feels, sleeps and thinks about things. A research about depression in Urmia University of medical sciences was done to propose some methods for solving of problems of the students. This study aimed to identify the presence of depression among medical studentsMethodsThis study designed to determine prevalence of depression in student of Urmia, Iran. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 700 undergraduate medical and basic students in Urmia University of medical science, west Azerbaijan Province, Iran. BDI questionnaire has been used for data gathering.ResultsMean score of students was 10.4 ± 0.8 and 52.6% of students scored under the threshold of Beck depression inventory questionnaire indicating depressed. 2% of them have a major depression. Results didn’t observe any significant relationship between ages, education, sex, rank of birth, duration of education. Depression level in Urmia medical science university was very high that can affect on the quality of education and social behavior of the students.ConclusionIt is important to research the causes of depression and plan to omit them. Establishment of consulting and recreation and problem solving centers that they will have in the future can be helpful.

Reviewing and citing literature are essential elements determining the quality of academic texts such as research articles (RAs); however, it is not easy to review and cite literature especially when writing in a foreign language such as Indonesians writing in English. The purpose of this study is to investigate the review and citation style in English RA introductions published in medical science journals written by Indonesian and international authors. Forty English RA introductions were analysed on the review and citation style and linguistic features such as tenses and citation type. The results show that there are more similarities than differences in the review and citation style and linguistic features of RA introductions in the two different medical journals. However, Indonesian writers in medical sciences should include negative evaluation when reviewing and citing other’s work in their English RA introductions to be successful if submitted to an international journal.

Приведены результаты исследований по изучению влияния промышленной технологии возделывания картофеля на развитие, урожайность и качество продукции. Выявлена положительная реакция растений на подкормку K2SO4 в период посадки. Корреляционно-регрессионный анализ урожайности и качества клубней выявил высокую степень достоверности результатов опыта. Содержание нитратов и тяжелых металлов в клубнях было ниже допустимых величин.The results of studies on the impact of industrial technology of potato cultivation on growth, yield and quality of products. There was a positive response of plants to fertilizer K2SO4 in the period of planting. Correlation and regression analysis of yield and quality of tubers revealed a high degree of reliability of the results of experience. The contents of nitrates and heavy metals in tubers was below the permissible values.

Research is considered a function aimed at obtaining new knowledge and its application for the solution to problems or questions of a scientific nature, The universities framed in the fulfillment of their social function have a complex task given by training a competent professional who assumes research as part of their training and who learns to ask questions that they are able to solve through scientific research.  Scientific research is an indicator of the quality of processes in the university environment, so it must be increased by virtue of the results of the work carried out by research teachers and students the objective of this work is to know the perception of the teachers of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Guayaquil about the scientific activity. Objective: to know the perception of the teachers of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Guayaquil about the scientific activity. Methods: theoretical and empirical level were used, a questionnaire with closed questions aimed at knowing the opinions on the research activity in this institution was applied. Result: that of the sample analyzed 309 (39.3%) said they agreed with the training for the writing of scientific articles. 38.6% said they agree with the training on research projects. Conclusion: that teacher’s research should be enhanced to ensure the formation and development of research skills in students.
