SPACES AND LEISURE EXPERIENCES IN THE CITY: building territories ABSTRACT  This article, with a theoretical scope based on bibliographical research, aims to problematize leisure in urban everyday life through the understanding and existence of territories for its experience. The territory category has gained more and more prominence in the studies that discuss the space and the relations of power that evidence the agents of its production and influence its appropriation. In this sense, thinking about leisure spaces and experiences in urban daily life leads us to reflect on the very configuration of leisure in cities, its contradictions and disputes. As results, two tendencies portrayed from two emblematic spaces in contemporary cities were identified: the emergence of leisure in territories of consumption – marked by capitalist relations of the market and by the economic dimension, like in shopping malls; which has overlapped leisure in territories of citizenship – marked by the search of its effectiveness as a social right and by the political dimension, like in public spaces such as squares and parks. It is realized, therefore, that the relations between leisure and its urban spaces as territories are permeated by divergent tensions and interests that are reflected in its daily appropriation, contributing to expand the possible analyzes between these two fields. Keywords: Space. Territory. In the article, the author examines the building of the Astronomical Observatory (1833-1837), which was a part of the architectural ensemble of Kazan Imperial University in the first third of the 19th-early 20th centuries (now – Kazan Federal University). The primary purpose of the study is to identify the specific features of the university ensemble. The task is to set the value of the Astronomical Observatory as the basic identifier of the ensemble. The research methodology is based on the theory of identity in architecture and urban planning and the application of a systematic analysis of the ensemble and its components. The author determined the importance of the Astronomical Observatory's building in the university ensemble in the context of the theory of identity. The features of the space-planning solution of the observatory building, its placement in the city landscape, and its great importance in the formation and development of astronomical science in Kazan allow us to conclude that the Astronomical Observatory was one of the identifiers of Kazan Imperial University ensemble. The significance of the research results lies in the development of the theory of identity when one of the objects of the ensemble becomes its identification code.

In the 1970s, the fragile historical centre of the city of Perugia was a key area where the binomial of sustainable mobility and urban regeneration was developed and applied. At the turn of the xxi century, the low carbon automatic people-mover Minimetrò broadened that application from the city's historical centre to the outskirts, promoting the enhancement of several urban environments. This paper is the outcome of an investigation of original sources, field surveys and direct interviews, which addresses the Minimetrò as the backbone of a wide regeneration process which has had a considerable impact on the economic development of a peripheral area of the city which was previously devoid of any clear urban sense. The conclusion proposes some solutions to improve the nature of the Minimetrò as an experimental alternative means of transport.

Many applications have relied on the hedonic pricing model (HPM) to measure the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for urban externalities and natural disasters. The classic HPM regresses housing price on a complete list of attributes/characteristics that include spatial or environmental amenities (or disamenities), such as floods, to retrieve the gradients of the market (marginal) WTP for such externalities. The aim of this paper is to propose an innovative methodological framework that extends the causal relations based on a spatial matching difference-in-differences (SM-DID) estimator, and which attempts to calculate the difference between sale price for similar goods within “treated” and “control” groups. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed spatial matching method, the researchers present an empirical investigation based on the case of a flood event recorded in the city of Laval (Québec, Canada) in 1998, using information on transactions occurring between 1995 and 2001. The research results show that the impact of flooding brings a negative premium on the housing price of about 20,000$ Canadian (CAN).

AbstractThe camp and the city are both important for understanding the relationship between space and identity in the refugee experience of exile. In the Palestinian example, the camp has emerged as a potent symbol in the narrative of exile although only a third of refugees registered with UNRWA live in camps. Moreover, the city and urban refugees remain missing in most of the scholarship on the Palestinian experience with space, exile, and identity. Furthermore, there is little attention to how refugees understand the concept of the city and camp in their daily life. This article examines how Palestinian urban refugees in the Old City of Damascus conceptualized the relationship between the camp and the city. It illustrates how the concept of the camp remained necessary for the construction of their collective national identity while in Syria. However, the city was essential in the articulation of individual desires and establishing social distinction from other refugees. Thus, during a protracted exile it is in the interstice between the city and the camp, where most urban refugees in the Old City situated themselves, that informed their national belonging and personal aspirations.

Pandemics, climate warming, growing inequality, and much more bring crises that change the patterns of daily life in human communities, directly impacting the provisioning systems that form in a community to meet the needs and wants of individuals, groups, and entities for goods, services, experiences, ideas. Provisioning systems sometimes begin as leadership initiated top-down, authoritarian prescriptive supply networks, public and private. Sometimes, they originate as bottom-up, self-organized, innovative, open choice, often informal, exchange based networks, and mostly, over time, they emerge as untidy self-organized multi-level diverse assemblages of both. The diversity of provisioning systems in a community enables crisis resilience, but limits efficiency and control. The provisioning systems that form in these ways are complex, multi-level, non-linear evolutionary systems, often unpredictable, and lacking direction. Balancing a desire for stability and an appetite for diversity, innovation, and change in shaping a provisioning system is like walking a narrow corridor on the edge of chaos. Achieving balance, avoiding slipping into chaos, rests on the management of a set of complex social mechanisms. These embrace delivery mechanisms where value is produced and consumed through complex infrastructures; stakeholder action fields where trust, collaboration, cooperation, compromise, competition, or conflict are in play; technology evolution mechanisms where innovation and the recombination of existing technologies occur at all levels; and value exchange fields where community and individual values shift in response to crisis and change. Recovery from crisis is not an event, it is a complex, continuing process, often unpredictable, often unequal in outcomes, but walking a narrow corridor is episodic, uncertain and in the end possible. This is the next normal for marketing.
