This study evaluated the early germination and growth variables of Irvingia gabonensis under organically primed and thermally amended soil media. Six media were prepared from Gmelina plantation topsoil by amendment with poultry waste (T2), river sand (T3) and combusted forest floor litters for 5 (T4), 10 (T5), 15 (T6) and 20 (T7) minutes respectively to contrast a control topsoil (T1). Soil media were analyzed for critical nutrient properties and engaged in the germination and early growth trial of Irvingia replicated three times, and arranged in a completely randomized design. Data collected were analyzed with ANOVA and significant means separated with the Duncan multiple range test. The results showed that Ca/Mg ratio was widest for T3, least CEC (13.2 meq/100 g soil) by T7 and slightly acidic pH (H2O) for T1 and T2 while T3, T4, T6 and T7 were alkaline. Germination at 6WAS was T4 (100%)> T1=T2=T5 (85.71%) > T3 (71.43%) > T6 (42.86%) > T7 (0%). The growth variables of seedling varied significantly (P<0.05) with T3 and T4 comparing favorably in collar diameter (4.50x10-1± 0.05 mm) and leaf area (35.08±4.85 mm2) although T3 recorded the highest stem height (117.79±0.42 mm). The study recommends the use of least thermally modified media (T4) and primed topsoil-riversand (T3) for fast germination in view of conserving food reserve for the critical early growth period of I. gabonensis in pursuit of its domestication in nutrient degraded soils.

Fertilizing potential of spermatozoa is pivotal for successful artificial insemination. Preservation of boar semen is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species which leads to decline of spermatozoa quality and decrease in fertilizing ability. The study aimed at investigating the effects of Ethanolic Allium sativum Extracts (EASE) as a cytoprotective agent on the quality and fertilizing potential of spermatozoa in extended boar semen. Semen was collected and aliquot portions were divided into 60 sample bottles comprising of five treatments with replicates. T1 served as the control (Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) + semen) in ratio 1:3 semen-extender, while other treatments T2 to T5 contained semen-extender at the same ratio, but supplemented with EASE at varying concentrations of 50, 75, 100 and 125 μg/L respectively stored at 17 °C and were evaluated at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours for pH, normal spermatozoa (NS) (%), liveability (%), acrosome integrity (AI) (%) in a completely randomized design. Data obtained were subjected to descriptive statistics and analysed using one way ANOVA and means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test. Treated semen samples (75, 100 and 125 μg/L) gave superior (P<0.05) liveability than control, up to 72 hours. Similar (P>0.05) mean values were observed for NS from all treatments except 50 μg/L at 24 hours. At 72 hours, treated samples (75, 100 and 125 μg/L) gave superior (P<0.05) NS. Significant differences (P<0.05) in mean values for pH were observed among treatments through the extension period. However, all values were within accepted range for quality semen. Acrosome integrity were similar (P>0.05) among treatments from 0 to 72 hours, but reduced (P<0.05). Results suggest that the supplementation of BTS with EASE 125 μg/L, gave better cytoprotection to the spermatozoa compared to the control.

Influence of urea fertilizer on early growth and development of Pterocarpus erinaceous seedlings were investigated. Two hundred (200) uniformly growing seedlings were transplanted into polythene pots filled with top soil. Four urea fertilizer rates (0.035; 0.065; 0.095; 0.0125 g) and control were applied to the seedlings in the pots 20 × 25 × 25 cm, filled with 800 g of top soil collected from forest plantation. Assessment on the metrical character of the seedlings was done fortnightly. The fertilization of the selected seedlings with urea fertilizer was done round the seedlings in the nursery pots using ring method. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, and means were separated using Duncan’s multiple range test at p < 0.05. The results show that fertilizer rates had significant (p < 0.05) effect on the growth and development of seedlings of P. erinaceous. Seedlings treated with 0.095 g of urea produced the highest mean values of 12.00 ± 0.66 cm; 0.33 ± 0.01 mm; 190 cm2 and 12.65 ± 0.67 for stem height, collar diameter, leaf area (LA) and number of leaves respectively. Seedlings fed with 0.125 g had the lowest values of 11.19 ± 0.61cm for height, 0.32± 0.01 mm for collar diameter 11.54 ± 0.70 for number of leaves and 124 cm2 for the LA. Urea fertilizers had significant effect on the early growth of the seedlings, therefore fertilization at 0.095 g per pot is recommended for raising P. erinaceous seedlings.
