The aim of the present study was to determine the existence of inter dental papilla according to the vertical dimension, horizontal dimension and the combined effects of the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the interproximal space on the existence of interdental papilla.182 interdental sites of 42 periodontitis patients undergoing open flap debridement were included in the study. The existence of interdental papilla was determined based on the Papilla Presence Index (PPI). The vertical dimension (VD) was measured from the alveolar crest to the contact point using UNC-15 probe. Horizontal dimension (HD) was measured from the mesial surface of the distal tooth and the distal surface of the mesial tooth at the level of the alveolar crest using castroviejocaliper. Statistical analysis was done by using independent ‘t’ test, Pearson’s Chi-square test and Trend Chi-square test. The existence of papilla was significantly higher in VD ≤ 5mm (91.5%) compared to VD > 5mm (9.8%) [p< 0.0001]. The existence of papilla was significantly higher in HD < 2mm (97%) compared to HD ≥ 2mm (1.2%) [p< 0.0001]. The contribution of both vertical dimension and horizontal dimension to the existence of papilla was about 61.6% and thus the existence of papilla may be influenced by various other factors (about 38.4%) which were not included in this study.The vertical and horizontal dimensions of the interproximal space gains significance in determining the existence of papilla and further research is needed to analyze the other factors influencing the papilla.

Overeducation is indicative of a suboptimal education–job match and is related to several negative consequences for workers. Despite extensive research explaining the overeducation phenomenon, previous studies have not simultaneously analyzed educational background (i.e., educational degrees) and social background effects, or have failed to consider both the vertical and horizontal dimension that educational degrees entail (i.e., level and field). This article seeks to overcome these limitations by examining whether overeducation varies (1) across educational background (considering both level and field of educational degrees), (2) across social background, and (3) by social background among workers with the same degree. Based on the German BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2018, results suggest that highly educated workers are more likely to be overeducated for the jobs they hold, implying the supply of this workforce exceeds the available adequate jobs on the German labor market. The field of education determines the risk of overeducation as well, with some occupationally specific fields of education (IT, natural sciences, and health) making for lower overeducation risk for both vocational and academic education. The results also indicate social background directly influences education–job matches (controlling for level and field of education), i.e., a social gap in overeducation. This evidence suggests an effect of social background on job allocation processes, beyond the effect of education, so that the offspring of privileged classes (i.e., high salariat) use the same degrees on the labor market more profitably than the offspring of less privileged classes. Given the low attention paid to education–job matches in social stratification analyses, the present article makes a noteworthy contribution to the literature on social stratification and inequality. In addition, the present research will serve as a base for future studies on overeducation including both the vertical and horizontal dimension of educational degrees.

Chapter 2 presents the theoretical framework for the book: a 2 × 2 typology that can help us understand the controversies surrounding genomics. The vertical dimension ranges from a perception that genetic inheritance strongly affects important human phenotypes to a perception that important human phenotypes are affected not by genetic inheritance but rather by environmental context, family and background, free choice, a deity’s will, or luck. The horizontal dimension ranges from technology optimism—a view that the gains from innovation can outweigh its harms—to the opposite, technology pessimism. The two dimensions jointly create four cells: “Enthusiasm,” focusing on the benefits of using the science of genetic influence, “Skepticism,” focusing on the risks of using the science of genetic influence, “Hope,” focusing on developing social improvements through means other than genetic influence, and “Rejection,” which highlights the hubris of both genetic science and social programming.

Mutual trust constitutes the foundation of the principle of mutual recognition, which in turn embodies a cornerstone of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ). This contribution explores the development of the relationship between trust and distrust in two mutual recognition regimes of the AFSJ. It bases on the premise that trust and distrust are inextricably linked, and that their relationship should not be perceived as one of mutual exclusivity or contradiction. The analysis addresses exceptions to mutual recognition, which are often perceived as manifestations of distrust, and examines their potential impact on mutual trust. It is submitted that exceptions to mutual recognition are necessary requirements for building and maintaining trust in the AFSJ and that they constitute an adaptation of the principle of mutual recognition to the particularities of the AFSJ. Next to the horizontal dimension of trust (i.e., trust among Member States) the analysis adds a new perspective by highlighting the importance of the vertical dimension of trust.

Smooth pursuit eye movements can anticipate predictable movement patterns, thus achieving their goal of reducing retinal motion blur. Oculomotor predictions have been thought to rely on an internal model of the target kinematics. Since biological motion is one of the most important visual stimuli in regulating human interaction, we asked whether there is a specific contribution of an internal model of biological motion in driving pursuit eye movements. Unlike previous contributions, we exploited the cyclical nature of walking to measure eye movement’s ability to track the velocity oscillations of the hip of point-light walkers. We quantified the quality of tracking by cross-correlating pursuit and hip velocity oscillations. We found a robust correlation between signals, even along the horizontal dimension, where changes in velocity during the stepping cycle are very subtle. The inversion of the walker and the presentation of the hip-dot without context incurred the same additional phase lag along the horizontal dimension, whereas a scrambled walker incurred no phase lag relative to the upright walker. Those findings support the view that local information beyond the hip-dot, but not necessarily configural information, contribute to predicting the hip kinematics that control pursuit. We also found a smaller phase lag in inverted walkers for pursuit along the vertical dimension compared to upright and scrambled walkers, indicating that inversion does not simply reduce prediction. We show that pursuit eye movements provide an implicit and robust measure of the processing of biological motion signals.

This paper presents area optimization techniques for high-density spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memories (SOT-MRAMs). Although SOT-MRAM has many desirable features of nonvolatility, high reliability and low write energy, it poses challenges to high-density memory implementation because of the use of two access transistors per cell. We first analyze the layout of the conventional SOT-MRAM bit-cell that includes two vertical metal lines, a bit-line and a source-line, limiting the horizontal dimension. We further propose two design techniques to reduce the horizontal dimension by decreasing the number of metal lines per cell without any performance overhead. Based on the fact that adjacent columns in a bit-interleaved array are not simultaneously accessed, the proposed techniques share a single source-line between two consecutive bit-cells in the same row. The simulation result shows that proposed techniques can achieve a bit-cell area reduction of 10–25% compared to the conventional SOT-MRAM. The comparison of our proposed designs with the standard spin-transfer torque MRAM shows 45% lower write energy, 84% lower read energy, and 2.3 × higher read-disturb margin.

The need for an integrated approach to the preservation and health promotion of school children, firstly due to low level of student health and its worsening dynamics; secondly, a variety of factors, including uncounted factors, that have an impact on health status and dynamics; thirdly, the narrowness and fragmentation of health preservation practice. An integrated approach has two dimensions – horizontal and vertical. The horizontal dimension provides highlighting significant aspects of health preservation, the vertical dimension – its levels. Nine aspects of an integrated approach to the health preservation of schoolchildren are highlighted and described: conceptual, political, legislative, technological, medical and educational, social, “co – participating, educational, organizational and technological. Particular attention is paid to agreement that priority lies in the health of students, along with their education and upbringing, their political and legal consolidation, organizational and technological implementation. Also, five levels of health preservation management processes are highlighted: personal, school, municipal, regional, federal.

For global template matching (GTM), which is commonly used in the positioning of rail fasteners, only the fastener template is used to search the global image in both two dimensions, which will result in errors in two dimensions, and the lower positioning accuracy will be caused. A positioning method for rail fasteners based on double template matching (DTM) is proposed in this paper, in which the double template contains the rail template and the fastener template. First, the rail template is used to scan the original image in horizontal dimension, and the squared Euclidean distance (SED) is used to obtain the rail positioning in the original image. Combining with the prior knowledge of the fastener template image, the image composed of the rail and the fastener can be obtained, which is called the Rail Area Map (RAM) in this paper. Then, after preprocessing the RAM and the fastener template image, the fastener template image is used to scan the RAM in vertical dimension, and the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) is used to calculate the similarity between the template and the subgraph of the RAM to achieve precise positioning of the fastener. The proposed DTM method adopts a positioning strategy from coarse to fine, and two templates are used to complete different positioning tasks in their own dimension, respectively. Due to the rail can be precise positioned in horizontal dimension, the error of the fastener positioning in the horizontal dimension can be avoided, and thus, the positioning accuracy can be improved. Experiments on the on-site line fastener images prove that the proposed method can effectively achieve the precise positioning of fasteners.

The main theme of this chapter is an understanding of culture not as a text to be interpreted through root symbols falling on the axes of nature and culture, nor simply as shared values, but instead as providing the ability to both forge a belonging and finding resources within one’s culture to contest it and find one’s voice in its singularity within it. The chapter explores the concept of counterculture and finds its alignments with skepticism that takes us in a direction that asks not how do we know that the external world exists but how do I know that I exist, that I can trust myself in relation to others? Skepticism is engaged in this chapter as lining the everyday—using the idea of lining not to suggest a border but to allude to the way a coat and its lining, the exterior and the interior, are joined to each other. Hence skepticism is not the kind of doubt that can be extinguished once for all. The idea of forms of life is introduced in its horizontal dimension as “form” and its vertical dimension as “life” showing how forms of life are both, particular to a milieu and as drawing from our common background as humans.

This article describes the world view of the people of South Central Timor Regency regarding Atoni Pah Meto in the Poitan Liana Rite. With qualitative descriptive methods, the paper formulated (1) Poitan Liana Rite means the kinship displayed in the role of Atoin Amaf in belief in Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and the ancestors through symbolic actions and speech; (2) Timorese view their life as an integral part of supernatural life, and the continuation of people’s lives in harmony between social order and cosmic order. Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and Ancestors are believed to be a supernatural power involved in human life. All forms of supernatural power interventions are in the context of the life of Atoni Pah Meto that proceeds to actualize themselves as “Responsible on earth”. (3) All human efforts are seen as a blessing from Uis Neno, Uis Pah, and the ancestors. Overall Poitan Liana’s ceremony contains meaning related to the understanding of self, nature, and society on one hand, as well as relations with supernatural powers on the other. In this vertical and horizontal dimension, Orang Boti directs himself to the vertical dimension to maintain his life in the horizontal dimension.
