The paper presents experimental investigations of the concrete covers’ protective ability to counteract rebar corrosion in reinforced concrete cubes. The concrete sample was subjected to a chloride-induced environment to get corroded and combined with an un-corroded sample. The chloride-accelerated technique can induce a high degree of corrosion within a controlled time. Moreover, detailed and thorough experimental measurements and analyses of reinforcement loss due to corrosion and its influence on concrete microstructure, were studied through 3D X-ray micro-computed tomography. The rebar outside the concrete was heavily corroded due to the chloride-accelerated test, whereas, only local surface corrosion products appeared inside the concrete. It turned out that the concrete cover showed protective ability to counteract the reinforcing-steel corrosion mechanism despite the accelerated corrosion environment. Moreover, the bond strength between the reinforcement rebar and concrete was not visibly affected since the failure force in the pull-out test and failure mechanisms, observed by 3D X-ray micro-CT, were similar for corroded and un-corroded samples. The failure occurred due to radial cracks with a maximum width equal to approximately 0.25 mm.

It has been shown that solutions of stearic acid in a dimethyl sulfoxide–water binary mixture allow superhydrophobic protective coatings to be created on an aluminum alloy surface with a minimum impact on the environment. The superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning ability of the coating that we developed have been confirmed by measurements of droplet wetting angles and roll-off angles. These properties appear due to the formation of a multimodal micro-rough surface that mainly consists of aluminum stearate. The coatings formed in this manner have been studied by ellipsometry, XPS, and scanning probe microscopy. Their protective ability has been estimated by the “droplet-express” method and in a salt fog chamber. The protective ability of the coating is determined by the DMSO/H2O ratio, the concentration of stearic acid, and the duration and temperature of modification of the aluminum alloy; it is controlled by a competition between the processes of aluminum stearate formation and hydrolysis. It has been shown that adsorption of stearic acid on an aluminum stearate coating increases its permeability and decreases its protective capability. The results presented in this article are useful for optimizing the conditions of applying green superhydrophobic stearate coatings on aluminum alloys in order to achieve a maximum protective effect.

Localized corrosion and biofouling cause very serious problems in the marine industries, often related to financial losses and environmental accidents. Aiming to minimize the abovementioned, two types of hybrid Zn-based protective coatings have been composed. They consist of a very thin underlayer of polymer-modified ZnO or CuO nanoparticles and toplayer of galvanic zinc with a thickness of ~14 µm. In order to stabilize the suspensions of CuO or ZnO, respectively, a cationic polyelectrolyte polyethylenimine (PEI) is used. The polymer-modified nanoparticles are electrodeposited on the steel (cathode) surface at very low cathodic current density and following pH values: 1/CuO at pH 9.0, aiming to minimize the effect of aggregation in the suspension and dissolution of the CuO nanoparticles; 2/ZnO at pH 7.5 due to the dissolution of ZnO. Thereafter, ordinary zinc coating is electrodeposited on the CuO or ZnO coated low-carbon steel substrate from a zinc electrolyte at pH 4.5–5.0. The two-step approach described herein can be used for the preparation of hybrid coatings where preservation of particles functionality is required. The distribution of the nanoparticles on the steel surface and morphology of the hybrid coatings are studied by scanning electron microscopy. The thickness of the coatings is evaluated by a straight optical microscope and cross-sections. The protective properties of both systems are investigated in a model corrosive medium of 5% NaCl solution by application of potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, open circuit potential (OCP), cyclic voltammetry (CVA), and polarization resistance (Rp) measurements. The results obtained allow us to conclude that both hybrid coatings with embedded polymer-modified CuO or ZnO nanoparticles ensure enhanced corrosion resistance and protective ability compared to the ordinary zinc.

One of the consequences of long-term exposure to air pollutants is increased mortality and deterioration of life parameters, especially among people diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or impaired respiratory system. Aqueous soluble inorganic components of airborne particulate matter containing redox-active transition metal ions affect the stability of S-nitrosothiols and disrupt the balance in the homeostasis of nitric oxide. Blood plasma’s protective ability against the decomposition of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) under the influence of aqueous PM extract among patients with exacerbation of heart failure and coronary artery disease was studied and compared with a group of healthy volunteers. In the environment of CVD patients’ plasma, NO release from GSNO was facilitated compared to the plasma of healthy controls, and the addition of ascorbic acid boosted this process. Model studies with albumin revealed that the amount of free thiol groups is one of the crucial factors in GSNO decomposition. The correlation between the concentration of NO released and -SH level in blood plasma supports this conclusion. Complementary studies on gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activity and ICP-MS multielement analysis of CVD patients’ plasma samples in comparison to a healthy control group provide broader insights into the mechanism of cardiovascular risk development induced by air pollution.

Coatings with thickness 40 to 150 μm were formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on the zirconium alloy Zr-1Nb (Zr-1% Nb) in the slurry electrolyte containing 9 g/L Na2SiO3 5H2O, 5 g/L Na(PH2O2) and 6 g/L submicron Y2O3 yttria powder during 60 min under the AC electrical mode at current densities 20; 30 and 40 A/dm2. The surface morphology, structure, composition, and corrosion-protective ability of the formed coatings have been analyzed. At PEO current density 30 A/dm2, a predominantly tetragonal phase of zirconia was formed in coatings. Increasing the PEO current density up to 40 A/dm2 promoted the formation of the coating surface layer containing submicron yttria particles. Electrochemical polarization studies in 0.5% LiOH solution showed that PEO coatings demonstrated high corrosion-protective ability. The dependence of the polarization currents on the PEO current density was found to be inconsequential.

Ferulic acid (FA) is known for its excellent antioxidant properties, which can provide many health benefits. One of its drawbacks is its instability under UVA light, which limits its potency. In this study, the new peptides LW2 (QNKRFYFRKNQ) and CW2 (a cyclic form of LW2) were designed based on bovine serum albumin site IIA conformation. A UVA irradiation experiment was performed to investigate the protective ability of these peptides towards FA against UVA damage. The percentages of FA remaining under UV irradiation due to the protection of CW2 and LW2 were 83% and 76%, respectively. The results showed the importance of the cationic residues and hydrophobic residues included in the peptide sequences. Moreover, the cyclic rigid structure showed greater protective ability as compared to its linear counterpart.

Various electrochemical methods were used to understand the behavior of steel buried in unsaturated artificial soil in the presence of cathodic protection (CP) applied at polarization levels corresponding to correct CP or overprotection. Carbon steel coupons were buried for 90 days, and the steel/electrolyte interface was studied at various exposure times. The coupons remained at open circuit potential (OCP) for the first seven days before CP was applied at potentials of −1.0 and −1.2 V vs. Cu/CuSO4 for the remaining 83 days. Voltammetry revealed that the corrosion rate decreased from ~330 µm yr−1 at OCP to ~7 µm yr−1 for an applied potential of −1.0 V vs. Cu/CuSO4. CP effectiveness increased with time due to the formation of a protective layer on the steel surface. Raman spectroscopy revealed that this layer mainly consisted of magnetite. EIS confirmed the progressive increase of the protective ability of the magnetite-rich layer. At −1.2 V vs. Cu/CuSO4, the residual corrosion rate of steel fluctuated between 8 and 15 µm yr−1. EIS indicated that the protective ability of the magnetite-rich layer deteriorated after day 63. As water reduction proved significant at this potential, it is proposed that the released H2 bubbles damage the protective layer.
