Purpose Supervisors play an important role in the implementation of organizational policies and practices. This study aims to examine the role of supervisors as both recipients and main implementers of organizational change by investigating how supervisors’ relationship with organization would affect their attitude toward change (ATC) and how employees–supervisor relationship, as perceived by employees, would influence their reaction to change. Design/methodology/approach The influence of participation, perceived organizational support (POS) and mutual expectation clarity (MEC) on supervisors’ ATC was examined, along with the influence of leader–member exchange, perception of supervisor’s expressed ATC and also supervisors’ organizational status on employees’ ATC. Two studies were conducted in a chain hospital in India. Findings The findings suggest that supervisors’ ATC improved by higher participation, POS and MEC. Also, while employees’ change attitude was predicted by how they perceived their supervisors’ status, expressed reaction toward change and perception of employee–supervisor relationship, for employees who either perceived highly negative change attitude of their supervisors or believed that their supervisors had low organizational status, the employee–supervisor relationship had almost no effect on improving employees’ attitude. Originality/value Considering that supervisors often tend to engage in professional relationships with their subordinate employees, little is investigated on how, through the lens of relationships, supervisors may affect employees’ ATC. This paper attempts to make a difference by conducting two connected studies in a chain hospital to examine how supervisors – as recipients and implementers of organizational policies and practices – could influence employees’ ATC. The findings suggest managerial implications that could inform practitioners toward improvement of employee buy-ins for change programs.

Persuasion has always been an integral aspect of human interaction that operates in different professional and lingua-cultural settings. The notion of persuasion as a key component of communication was brought into the world by classical rhetoric. Although, the art and science of persuasion has been of interest since the time of the Ancient Greeks, there are fundamental differences between the ways in which persuasion occurs today and how it has occurred in the past. While previous studies have been conducted regarding persuasion in advertisement and political speeches, the current research, however, is a quest for the underlying covert persuasion strategies adopted by advertising agencies and political figures or parties. Moreover, while previous studies have concentrated on how language relates to power and what linguistic elements are used by politicians and advertisers to persuade their voters and costumers, the current paper has meticulously focused on the covert attempts and endeavors by politicians and advertisers who employ various elusive techniques to serve their concealed intentions. The scope of this research primarily focuses on two major fields – Advertisement and Political Speeches. Ten texts have been analyzed where persuasion plays a vital role in the way of getting customers and voters to change attitude, belief and act in certain ways. It has been found that covert persuasion best functions within the trope category (mainly metaphor, allusion, and metonymy) which is primarily realized through the mediation of semantic meaning. Schemes have no function within covert persuasion as they are basically more blatant. Two persuasion strategies, three persuasion techniques, and the use of personal pronouns all serve covert persuasion purposes. And covert persuasion can be more effective than overt persuasion in that they batter serve positive face.

The study investigated attitudes toward climate change among 480 pre-service science, technology, and mathematics (STM) teachers from four higher institutions of learning in Southwest, Nigeria using the quantitative research method within the blueprint of the descriptive survey design. Data collected using climate change attitude survey were analysed using the descriptive statistics of percentages, mean, and standard deviation and inferential statistics of factor analysis and independent samples t-test. Findings revealed that attitudes toward climate change assessed by the climate change attitude survey was a multi-dimensional construct (perceived beliefs component and intentions component). Gender differences in attitudes toward climate change among pre-service STM teachers were not significant even at the subscale level of perceived beliefs and intentions. In addition, the pre-service STM teachers showed a moderate level of attitudes toward climate change. In conclusion, there is need for a concerted effort to protect the earth from increased weather variability and the Nigerian government at all levels has both international and domestic commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to ensuring sustainable human development. Future studies in Nigeria and elsewhere should conduct a confirmatory factor analysis on the climate change attitude survey to further generalise the findings of this study.

The article is devoted to the study of the essence and content of the attitude of convicts to punishment in the form of imprisonment. The convict's attitude to punishment reflects the moral essence of his personality and characterizes him during the period of serving the sentence. On the one hand, the attitude of convicts to punishment is determined by its stability, since it arises and remains throughout the entire period of serving a sentence, and on the other hand, by dynamism, which accordingly suggests the possibility of its change. Attitude to punishment acts as a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, in the structure of which it is necessary to highlight the following elements: guilt awareness; experiences associated with the need to serve a sentence; awareness of the need to serve and the inevitability of punishment. The article analyzes the psychological and socio-psychological factors that determine the development of the prison subculture, which negatively affects the formation of the correct perception of punishment. Based on the results of sociological studies, the authors propose a classification of convicts depending on their attitude to punishment.

Topicality of the problem is determined by several factors as well as the amendments on the Education Law and the General Education Law, which provide for a gradual transition to the acquisition of general secondary education in Latvian only, educational content reform and teachers experience to work in an ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous environment. Because language not a subject only but a mean of acquiring other subjects in the comprehensive school, too, all teachers need theoretical knowledge and practical experience to plan and carry out two important tasks in the teaching/learning process – to help to students to acquire different subjects content and purposefully to use language for this. The research methods are analyses of theoretical literature and interviewing combined with classroom observations results. According research results the most important problems are insufficient knowledge about language role for acquisition of content, insufficient cooperation between teachers, part - understood issue, how to work with different texts as well as necessity to change attitude towards the pedagogical process and responsibility for learning outcomes.
