SUMMARYThe phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation coefficients were calculated for 13 morphological and tuber quality characters, 17 of 78 possible combinations were found to be significant. Tuber yield was positively associated with average tuber weight and with total tuber dry matter per plant. Average tuber weight was negatively associated with number of tubers per plant and with most of the quality characters. The indices for selection for tuber yield were computed using the yield components and yield only. It was observed that the selections based on tuber yield itself are likely to be superior to those based on yield components. However, an index involving the yield components and the yield was found to be most efficient.Among the tuber quality characters, percentage tuber dry matter showed significant positive association with the percentage alcohol-insoluble solids (AIS) and with the percentage of starch in fresh tubers, and a negative association with the percentage of protein in tuber dry matter. The associations between percentage of starch in fresh tubers and the percentage of starch in tuber dry matter, between percentage of starch in AIS and the percentage of starch in tuber dry matter and between percentage of protein in fresh tubers and the percentage of protein in tuber dry matter were also found to be significant and positive.To increase tuber yield it is necessary to break the negative linkage between its two components. High total tuber dry matter per plant can be brought about by selecting for high tuber yield. For the improvement of tuber quality together with tuber yield, the selection for yield based on a large number of tubers is likely to be useful.

The effect of nitrogen fertilization and microbial preparations on yielding and development of potato tuber yield components were assessed in field experiments conducted under soil conditions of Luvic Chernozem. The factors of the experiment were nitrogen fertilization levels: 0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N/ha and the following preparations: BactoFil B10, effective microorganisms and UG<sub>max</sub> soil fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilization caused a significant increase in marketable yield of potato tubers. Yield increments on individual fertilizer treatments ranged from 66% to 140%. An evident effect of this factor was also visible regarding the yield components values. Increase in the number of main stems per 1 m<sup>2</sup> under the influence of growing nitrogen doses occurred from the fertilization level 120 kg N/ha, whereas the number of tubers per 1 stem increased only to the level of 60 kg N/ha. Each nitrogen dose applied within the range to 180 kg N/ha caused a marked increase in an average tuber weight. Conducted investigations demonstrated an unfavourable effect of microbial preparations on the marketable crop yield of tubers and formation of yield components. On the objects where microbial preparations were applied, the marketable yield was lower by 1.5 to 2.3 t/ha than in the control. Analysis of linear regression revealed occurrence of significant dependencies between the total tuber yield and the values of individual yield components. The relationships were the most visible for an average tuber weight formation as evidenced by the value of coefficient of determination&nbsp;(R<sup>2</sup> = 0.983).

Study on the relationships between yield and its components will improve the efficiency of breeding programmes by determining appropriate selection criteria. An investigation was carried out on 24 potato genotypes to find out the association among yield, yield components and their direct and indirect effects on tuber yield of potato. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications at Sinana Agricultural Research Center. The association was analyzed by correlation coefficient, and further subjected to path analysis to estimate direct and indirect effects of each character on tuber yield. Positive and significant genotypic and phenotypic correlation were found between total tuber yield and marketable tuber yield (rg=0.99), leaf area index (rg=0.82), plant height(rg=0.56), stem number per plant(rg=0.56), average tuber weight (rg=0.74)  and biomass yield (rg=0.69). Path analysis of tuber yield and its components shows that marketable tuber yield and average tuber weight had maximum positive direct genotypic and phenotypic effect on total tuber yield indicating their importance in selection for tuber yield improvement.

ABSTRACT Potato genotypes were evaluated in their performance, according to the genotype values for tuber yield traits. The experiments were carried out in Canoinhas and Pelotas, Brazil, in spring 2014. Eleven advanced clones and two commercial cultivars (Agata and Asterix) (check cultivars) were evaluated. A randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. Plots were harvested 110 days after planting, and evaluated for tuber yield components. The data were submitted to joint deviance analyzes using the REML/BLUP method. Clones F102-22-07 and F32-02-06 stood out positively for tuber yield. F102-22-07 showed high marketable tuber yield and average tuber weight, while clone F32-02-06 exhibited high marketable and total tuber yield. The superiority of these advanced clones in relation to the check cultivars, suggests their potential to be evaluated in other environments, aiming their release as new cultivars.

Disease-free and superior quality seed tubers could be obtained by haulm (vine) killing, which also reduces weight loss during storage. Higher resistance during storage ensures that seed tubers will be at the desired physiological age at the time of planting. The use of healthy seed tubers of appropriate physiological age will have positive impact on yield and quality. This study aimed to investigate the effects of haulm killing on seed potato yield and yield components (total tuber yield, average tuber yield/plant, number of tubers and average tuber weight) under semi-arid climate of Artova district in Tokat province, Turkey. The field studies were carried out during potato growing seasons of 2017 and 2018. The experiment consisted of two factors, i.e., potato cultivars and haulm killing. Five different potato cultivars, i.e., ‘Agria’, ‘Marabel’, ‘Hermes’, ‘Marfona’ and Madeleine were included in the study. The haulm killing treatments were ‘haulm killing’ and ‘no haulm killing’. Haulm killing positively affected the number of tubers per plant and average tuber weight, which are directly related to the tuber yield. Tuber seed yield in the first and second year with haulm killing treatment was 40.78 and 44.05 tons/ha, respectively. The yield without haulm killing in the first and second years was 37.78 and 38.76 tons/ha, respectively. The dry matter ratio of tubers with haulm killing was 21.89% in 2017 and 22.35% during 2018. The dry matter ratio of tubers without haulm killing was 20.57% in 2016 and 21.03% during 2017. The results revealed haulm killing had positive impact on yield, yield-related parameters and dry matter content of seed tubers. Therefore, haulm killing is recommended for higher yield and better quality of seed tubers.

AbstractA field experiment was conducted in the central highlands of Ethiopia to evaluate the performance of potato varieties for tuber yield and to identify a superior variety in tuber yield and yield components. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at two locations in the central highlands of Ethiopia during the 2017 main cropping season. The results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed the presence of highly significant (P<0.01) differences among varieties over all traits studied. The mean squares for location were also significant in indicating the influence of environments on the traits of the studied varieties. However, the interaction between variety and environment had no significant effect on the performances of the potato varieties to attain 50% flowering, specific gravity and dry matter content indicating a similar performance of these traits across all locations. The variety Belete produced the maximum total tuber yield of 32.8 t ha -1 and marketable tuber yield of 29.1 t ha-1. Conversely, farmers` variety Nech Abeba produced the minimum total tuber yield of 13.8 t ha-1 and marketable tuber yield of 8.4 t ha-1. For most tuber quality traits, viz., tuber specific gravity, dry matter content, starch percentage and total starch yield, varieties Belete and Menagesha were the maximum and minimum producers, respectively. Thus, it could be concluded that varietal and environmental variations as well as their interaction had considerable influence on tuber yield and the potato’s attributes.

In order to assess the variability of yield contributing characters of 50 okra accessions and their interrelation effects on the yield of green pod a field experiment was undertaken at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from February, 2002 to May, 2002. A wide range of variation was observed in case of weight of green pod per plant (105- 281g), days to first flowering (40-52days) and weight of individual green pod (14-26g). Moderate variation for length of green pod (12-19cm), number of green pods per plant (6-11) and yield of green pod (4-13 t/ha), lesser variation for percent of dry matter content (5-8%), number of ridges per green pod (5-9) and diameter of green pod (1-2cm) was observed. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation was observed in case of yield of green pod (GCV= 23.22%) followed by weight of green pod per plant (22.24%), weight of individual green pod (18.68%), number of ridges per green pod (13.49%), number of green pod per plant (10.84%), dry matter content of green pod (10.48%), diameter of green pod (6.90%) and length of green pod (6.24%). These characters suggested the existence of justifiable genetic distance among different cultivars. Correlation coefficient indicated that yield of green pod had highly significant positive association with weight of green pod per plant and weight of individual green pod. Path coefficient analysis showed that the weight of green pod per plant and weight of individual green pod were directly contributed towards the yield of green pod. The present investigation on evaluation of varietal performance of various potato varieties under Pune Conditions was initiated in Oct 2012. Potato tubers of Kufri Lauvkar, Kufri Badshah, Kufri Pushkar, Kufri Surya, Kufri Khyati, Kufri Ashoka, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Pukharaj were planted on ridges and furrows. The results revealed that Kufri Surya recorded significantly higher total tuber yield (20.67 t/ha) followed by Kufri Pukharaj (18.45 t/ha). However percent plant emergence and foliage senescence were found non-significant. Whereas results in respect of yield depicted that the variety Kufri Lauvkar produced the lowest tuber yield of 16.23 t/ha. Tuber dry matter (19.69%) was recorded to be the highest in Kufri Surya which was significantly superior in comparison to the remaining varieties. The least incidence of late blight (9.69%) was recorded on Kufri Khyati which was at par with K. Surya (9.74%). The least incidence of early blight (10.29%) was recorded on K. Lauvkar which too was at par with K. Surya. Keeping this in view K. Surya may be recommended as promising variety for Pune region

SUMMARYGrowth and tuber yield of local sweet potato cultivars were compared during the 1974 and 1975 growing seasons. Three cultivars significantly outyielded the others. The cultivar effect was associated with differences in individual tuber weight, rate of bulking and percentage of total dry matter diverted into the vine or stem. Mean crop growth rate (C) and percentage of total dry matter diverted into the tubers were greater in the higher yielding cultivars and there was positive and significant correlation between Cand final total dry weight. Leaf area duration (D) was greater in 1975 than in 1974 but the differences between cultivars in D was not consistent. Higher yielding cultivars had significantly greater tuber/leaf ratio than the other cultivars.Bulking rate and tuber weight were positively correlated with tuber yield, while the percentage of total dry matter diverted into the vine was negatively correlated with tuber yield.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the effects of genotype (G), location (L), and G × L interaction on tuber quality traits (dry matter content and starch pasting parameters) in white Guinea yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.). Variability in tuber dry matter and starch pasting properties was examined using 18 advanced breeding lines and two dominant landrace cultivars of white Guinea yam grown in three different agroecological zones (forest‒savanna transition, southern Guinea savanna, and rainforest) in Nigeria. The starch pasting properties were evaluated using a Rapid Visco Analyser. Our results show that the G × L interaction effect was low compared to the genotype and growing location effects on the variability of key starch properties. In addition, the repeatability of trait performance across locations was high and relatively uniform for key traits, suggesting that any of the three locations used in this study can be employed for their evaluation. Furthermore, TDr1100873 had a higher dry matter content than the dominant landrace cultivars (Amula and Meccakusa) but was similar to them in starch pasting properties. Hence, TDr1100873 is considered a suitable variety for future breeding activities.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate advanced potato clones for tuber yield, frying quality, plant vigor, and maturity, grown from minituber seeds, and to assess correlations between these traits. Eight advanced potato clones of Embrapa Potato Breeding Program (F11-09-03, F05-11-03, F54-11-06, F141-11-01, C2718-12-09, C2718-24-09, C2743-09-09, and CL308) and three commercial cultivars (Agata, Asterix and BRSIPR Bel) were evaluated. Experiments were carried out in autumn 2017, in Canoinhas-SC and Pelotas-RS. A randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. We used tuber seeds type IV (minibubers). We evaluated plant vigor, maturity, yield and number of marketable tubers, yield and number of total tubers, average tuber weight, specific gravity, and frying color. Individual and joint variance analyses revealed significant differences (p <0.05) among genotypes for all traits at both locations. The GxE (genotype x environment) interaction was significant for all traits. For the two locations together, clones F05-11-03, C2718-12-09, C2718-24-09 and the control cultivar BRSIPR Bel showed higher marketable tuber yields. The first two clones also showed tubers with high average tuber weight. Clone F54-11-06 showed the later maturity at both locations. Regarding the frying quality characteristics, only clone F141-11-01 showed a pattern comparable to that of the control cultivar Asterix. Also, clones with higher plant vigor had higher tuber yield, but late maturity. Frying quality traits were not correlated between them and among other traits.
