China's rapid economic development has helped to raise the international status of Mandarin. One prediction is that ‘in ten years, Mandarin will be as important worldwide as English’ (Trudgill, 2014: 387). Another even greater change resulting from China's economic growth is the increasing popularity that English enjoys in China (Hu, 2004, 2005; Hu, 2009; Zhang, 2012; Werner, 2014). English is now used in a wide range of fields and contexts throughout the country. This is not surprising given the dominance of the English language on a global scale. English, now increasingly employed together with Chinese to combine global with local appeal, functions ‘as an index of modernity, progress, internationalism and globalization, a symbol of success, sophistication and projection into the future’ (Vettorel, 2013: 262). One indicator illustrating this phenomenon is the widespread use of public signs in both Chinese and English. Some authors argue that this use of bilingual signs has resulted in the creation of ‘an attractive linguistic landscape’ in China (Yang & Liu, 2008:79). Accordingly, research on bilingual public signs has, in recent years, become ‘a hot area in the translation field’ (Zou et al, 2011:27), attracting the attention of a growing number of scholars (e.g. Dai & Lü, 2005; Song, 2013; Chen, 2014).

This article deals with the problem of relationships among people in the future, which are based not on respect and understanding of each other's value, but on absolute dependence on technical progress. The purpose of this work is to highlight the problem of humanity’s tragedy in the genre of science fiction, using the example of Ray Bradbury’s works „Tomorrow's Child” and „The Veldt”. Firstly, it is noted that the difference and, accordingly, the problem begins immediately with terminology, because there is no single stable definition of the term „fantasy” (as a generic phenomenon) in English-language science. The options offered by scientists are speculative fiction, fantastic fiction, fantasy literature. The author notes that science fiction (Sci-Fi) describes many different super important problems of the human society: technological progress, information wars, the desire of people to be immortal, powerful, rich, possessing the Universe. In fact, the tragedy of humanity begins from these desires. However, R. Bradbury’s works „Tomorrow's Child” and „The Veldt” have a wide range of topics, affecting aesthetic, intellectual, moral and scientific problems. In addition, the science fiction writer reveals his special interest in the inner world of the child. In the mentioned-above stories, the idea of the coexistence of people and the techno world is traced, which leads to a tragic situation. Covering the problem of humanity’s tragedy in the future, described back in the distant 1950s, R. Bradbury aims to present another idea of the future, he describes, at the same time, possible threats to us, and shows what significant consequences this can lead to.

The Japanese linguistic landscape is a dynamically vibrant area with words and phrases appearing in a vast array of locations written in a wide range of scripts, fonts, sizes and colours, and all serving a complex and interconnected array of functions. This visual landscape of shop signs, street signs, advertising posters, information boards and vending machines is complemented by a similar vibrancy and dynamism in more private domains such as restaurant menus, product packaging, clothing, newspaper articles, magazine stories and TV advertising. Immediately striking an observer of these contexts is the fact that, although the Japanese language has a highly complex writing system incorporating an admixture of logographic, syllabic and alphabetic characters, a great many of the words and phrases in Japanese social contexts are transcribed in Latin alphabet characters. Because the vast majority of these lexical items are either direct imports of words from the English language (often termed ‘loanwords' or ‘borrowings') or domestic creations based on English vocabulary (often termed ‘wasei eigo'/‘Japan-created English'), those who are familiar with the English language are assisted in their orientation around Japan by this pervasive use of English-based vocabulary.

In this article we justified the priority directions for the regulatory mechanism’s development, considering the importance to foster economic growth to increase the fiscal efficiency. We evaluated the level of taxation in Ukraine and the European Union. We found out that the tax structure has a significant impact on economic growth. Corporate tax is particularly harmful for economic growth, because affects the investment behavior of corporations that are making a significant contribution to total output. Taxes on labor have a greater negative effect on growth than the taxes on consumption because they are in progressive to a large degree, as well as they tax income from savings and investments. Our investigation showed that advanced economies more actively used the regulatory mechanisms of tax policy to stimulate new research and development, to increase investment in science-intensive production sectors. We propose the statements for introducing an investment tax credit on R&D, which is given at the initial stage of the innovation process and is calculated based on the amount of investment in the creation of qualified tangible and intangible assets, reducing the amount of actually accrued tax, which would stimulate capital investments in science-intensive sectors of the economy; an investment deduction of expenditures on R&D, which is calculated as a percentage from the sum of the actual or estimated costs for the creation, acquisition, or reconstruction of certain qualified types of tangible and intangible assets. In the survey a balanced approach to the tax policy in order to create financial conditions to counteract import expansion and to stimulate domestic export-oriented manufacturers is presented. Moreover, we proposed the tax incentives for the institutional motivational mechanism to stimulate economic development based on the innovative-investment approach, which would comply with the basic principles and guidelines of the advanced economic development.

The scientific views of the famous Estonian linguist, public figure and politician, legendary professor of the University of Tallinn, Mati Hint (1937-2019), cover a wide range of Estonian philology, from phonetics to linguistic politics and the research of linguistic landscape. The number of his scientific works is well over 300. Mati Hint was characterized by a constant opposition to the mainstream. He popularized the South Estonian Tartu literary language, which had become extinct at the beginning of the 20th century, by publishing several scientific articles on this subject. Hint provided an innovative description of the phonological system, morphophonology and the grade alternation of the Estonian language. According to his concept, in the Estonian language, three longitudes of phonemes cannot be distinguished. Three longitudes can have a syllable. Thus, Estonian is not an unique language that differs from all other languages of the world, but on the contrary, it fits perfectly into all languages of the world. In many works he explains the problems of contacts between the Estonian and the Russian languages. Hint indicates the consequences of bilingualism, which may result in semilingualism, and in extreme cases in a language shift. A large language can be pidginized and creolized. According to the current period, professor Hint attributed to the English language similar roles in relation to Estonian, which he attributed to the Russian language during Perestroika.

This article is result of project “The Virtual Past is a Keystone for the Future of Museums”(LLB-2-269). Latgale Culture and History Museum (LCHM) plays an important role in preservation and promotion of ceramics of Latgale (LCHM has had one of the largest and most purposefully developed collections of ceramics of Latgale in the museums of Latvia since 1960) and in the development of the collection of Latgale ceramics by researching and exhibiting collections of ceramic items, recording potters’ biographies, documenting pottery inheritance and processes of creating ceramics in many Latgalian ceramic masters’ workshops. A part of Latgalian ceramic collection items are exhibited in the regular exhibition of Latgalian ceramics “The wonder created by clay and fire transformations”, but the other part is available in a virtual museum (www.futureofmuseums.eu), where the gallery is represented by 500 objects of LCHM collection of Latgalian ceramics. It includes a relatively wide range of works and types of dishes, created by ceramic masters of Latgale (vases, jugs, whistles, plates, money-boxes etc.). Alongside the works, created by Latgale ceramic classics, there can be viewed experiments developed by contemporary ceramists of Latgale, which reveal the search for a new path that allows people to discern the development of ceramics of Latgale. To increase the interest in ceramics of Latgale and to get acquainted with the traditions, the virtual museum visitors are offered to participate in a creative educational game “Clay transformations”, during which anyone can be a virtual potter – a clay master, by experiencing clay transformation path from its preparation till the burned piece of art. Everyone may optionally either only create pottery, or parallel to the creation of the dish can learn many interesting facts about the potter’s work and its specifics. Virtual museum is still one of the options to ensure availability of collections to society and tell a wider audience (especially to young people) about the museum, its work, Latgale ceramics and traditions in a modern and interactive way.

How does a state's natural resource wealth influence its economic development? For the past fifty years, versions of this question have been explored by both economists and political scientists. New research suggests that resource wealth tends to harm economic growth, yet there is little agreement on why this occurs. This article reviews a wide range of recent attempts in both economics and political science to explain the “resource curse.” It suggests that much has been learned about the economic problems of resource exporters but less is known about their political problems. The disparity between strong findings on economic matters and weak findings on political ones partly reflects the failure of political scientists to carefully test their own theories.

Land acquisition for development project is not a new topic of discussion at least in a developing nation as ours. In recent times, we happened to have witnessed a wide range of protests and chaos relating to land issues in the country. Land is needed for industrialisation, which is the prime concern for economic growth, but the central concern of development should be the welfare all sections of the society rather than just economic growth. The article aims to understand the complexities of development, keeping land acquisition and its consequences at the forefront. It also focuses on the land acquisition policies in the country and how these policies have evolved over a period of time. More importantly, it analyses the implications of land acquisition, with certain cases being highlighted. Further, an attempt is made to perceive how the land acquisition controversies have affected economic development in the country.
