Effect of Temperature on Hardening and Residual Stress Development During Wheel/Rail Rolling Contact

Brake heating of Railroad Wheels has been known to accelerate shelling, soften the wheel tread and contribute to stress reversal which is a requisite for generating thermal cracks. The effect brake heating has on shakedown has been investigated to a lesser extent, yet even here brake heating can be very important. This research combines field investigations and laboratory work in an attempt to quantify the thermal effects on wheel performance, especially as it relates to sub-surface shelling, microstructural changes and hardening mechanisms. Cyclic tensile tests were conducted at three temperatures to show the relationship between deformation at elevated temperatures and hardening response. Ductility measurements from both monotonic and cyclic tests were used to estimate residual stresses.

Sliding and tread brake heating are known to alter microstructures and properties and show causal relationships with shelling and spalling. Temperature can also affect the performance of wheels in other ways: rolling contact forces depend on the size of the contact patch, which is affected by the elastic modulus, which in turn is affected by the tread temperature. Temperature differences from the rim to the remaining portion of the wheel may cause distortions, which may result in unfavorable contact between the wheel and the rail. Cold temperatures affect the fracture toughness and, in the presence of water, may cause wedging, which will accelerate the shelling process. Oxidation within a crack can also cause wedging, resulting in the propagation of thermal cracks. Changes in the residual stress due to brake heating can also affect shakedown. This study considers the many ways of how temperature can affect the performance of the railroad wheel of a freight car. Most of the author’s observations relate to the freight car service in North America and may not be applicable to other types of service in other parts of the world.

Plastic deformations alter the mechanical properties of many metals and alloys. Class C and Class D wheel steels such as are used in North American freight car service are particularly affected by plastic deformations occurring during rolling contact between the wheel tread and rail head. This investigation determines the effect plastic deformations have on the mechanical properties of Class C and D wheel steels and how those changes could relate to shakedown theory. The effect of temperature is also discussed.

In this paper, some interesting, experimentally determined actualities referring to the 50CrMo4 steel are presented. That way, the mechanical properties of the material are derived from uniaxial tensile tests at lowered and elevated temperatures. Engineering stress versus strain diagrams for both mentioned temperatures, curves representing the effect of temperature on specimen elongation, and short-time creep curves are given. Notch impact energy test was also carried out. Taking into consideration the service life of the final product of the mentioned steel widely used in engine and machine technology, all of the mentioned data may be relevant during design and manufacturing procedure.

The deterioration of the mechanical properties of yield strength and modulus of elasticity is considered as the primary element affecting the performance of steel structures under fire. In this study, hot-rolled S220 and S420 reinforcement steel rebars were subjected to high temperatures to investigate the fire performance of these materials. It is aimed to determine the remaining mechanical properties of steel rebars after elevated temperatures. Steels were subjected to 20, 100, 200, 300, 500, 800, and950∘C temperatures for 3 hours and tensile tests were carried out. Effect of temperature on mechanical behavior of S220 and S420 were determined. All mechanical properties were reduced due to the temperature increase of the steel rebars. It is seen that mechanical properties of S420 steel was influenced more than S220 steel at elevated temperatures.

SummaryA study of blood coagulation was carried out by observing changes in the blood viscosity of blood coagulating in the cone-in-cone viscometer. The clots were investigated by microscopic techniques.Immediately after blood is obtained by venepuncture, viscosity of blood remains constant for a certain “latent” period. The duration of this period depends not only on the intrinsic properties of the blood sample, but also on temperature and rate of shear used during blood storage. An increase of temperature decreases the clotting time ; also, an increase in the rate of shear decreases the clotting time.It is confirmed that morphological changes take place in blood coagula as a function of the velocity gradient at which such coagulation takes place. There is a progressive change from the red clot to white thrombus as the rates of shear increase. Aggregation of platelets increases as the rate of shear increases.This pattern is maintained with changes of temperature, although aggregation of platelets appears to be increased at elevated temperatures.Intravenously added heparin affects the clotting time and the aggregation of platelets in in vitro coagulation.

The respiratory rates of three species of planktonic copepods, Acartia clausi, Centropages hamatus and Temora longicornis, were measured at four different temperatures.The relationship between respiratory rate and temperature was found to be similar to that previously found for Calanus, although the slope of the curves differed in the different species.The observations on Centropages at 13 and 170 C. can be divided into two groups and it is suggested that the differences are due to the use of copepods from two different generations.The relationship between the respiratory rates and lengths of Acartia and Centropages agreed very well with that previously found for other species. That for Temora was rather different: the difference is probably due to the distinct difference in the shape of the body of Temora from those of the other species.The application of these measurements to estimates of the food requirements of the copepods is discussed.

Abstract Background Although exposure to air pollution has been linked to many health issues, few studies have quantified the modification effect of temperature on the relationship between air pollutants and daily incidence of influenza in Ningbo, China. Methods The data of daily incidence of influenza and the relevant meteorological data and air pollution data in Ningbo from 2014 to 2017 were retrieved. Low, medium and high temperature layers were stratified by the daily mean temperature with 25th and 75th percentiles. The potential modification effect of temperature on the relationship between air pollutants and daily incidence of influenza in Ningbo was investigated through analyzing the effects of air pollutants stratified by temperature stratum using distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM). Stratified analysis by sex and age were also conducted. Results Overall, a 10 μg/m3 increment of O3, PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 could increase the incidence risk of influenza with the cumulative relative risk of 1.028 (95% CI 1.007, 1.050), 1.061 (95% CI 1.004, 1.122), 1.043 (95% CI 1.003, 1.085), and 1.118 (95% CI 1.028, 1.216), respectively. Male and aged 7–17 years were more sensitive to air pollutants. Through the temperature stratification analysis, we found that temperature could modify the impacts of air pollution on daily incidence of influenza with high temperature exacerbating the impact of air pollutants. At high temperature layer, male and the groups aged 0–6 years and 18–64 years were more sensitive to air pollution. Conclusion Temperature modified the relationship between air pollution and daily incidence of influenza and high temperature would exacerbate the effects of air pollutants in Ningbo.

AbstractAdvanced medium-Mn sheet steels show an opportunity for the development of cost-effective and light-weight automotive parts with improved safety and optimized environmental performance. These steels utilize the strain-induced martensitic transformation of metastable retained austenite to improve the strength–ductility balance. The improvement of mechanical performance is related to the tailored thermal and mechanical stabilities of retained austenite. The mechanical stability of retained austenite was estimated in static tensile tests over a wide temperature range from 20 °C to 200 °C. The thermal stability of retained austenite during heating at elevated temperatures was assessed by means of dilatometry. The phase composition and microstructure evolution were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It was shown that the retained austenite stability shows a pronounced temperature dependence and is also stimulated by the manganese addition in a 3–5% range.

This paper presents the results of elevated temperatures on the compressive of high fly ash content concrete (HFCC). The specimens were prepared with three different replacements of cement by fly ash 30%, 40% and 50% by mass and the residual compressive strength was tested after exposure to elevated temperature 250, 450, 550 and 650°C and room temperature respectively. The results showed that the compressive strength apparently decreased with the elevated temperature increased. The presence of fly ash was effective for improvement of the relative strength, which was the ratio of residual compressive strength after exposure to elevated temperature and ordinary concrete. The relative compressive strength of fly ash concrete was higher than those of ordinary concrete. Based on the experiments results, the alternating simulation formula to determine the relationship among relative strength, elevated temperature and fly ash replacement is developed by using regression of results, which provides the theoretical basis for the evaluation and repair of HFCC after elevated temperature.
