Impact of Connection Properties on Dynamic Response of Modular Floating Structures

A geometric model is established based on pre-existing model tests, and the rigid module flexible connector (RMFC) concept is adopted to perform hydrodynamic analysis of the modular floating structure. To obtain knowledge of the impact of tri-axial stiffness combinations, a large number of cases are designed and the dynamic performances are plotted. In order to reduce the extreme response induced by the structural resonance, damping components are designed and integrated with elastic connectors. Cases of tri-axial combinations with different damping ratios are also put into dynamic analysis. Finally, qualitative knowledge of the impact of connection properties on the dynamic response of modular floating structures is obtained and advices on the design and optimization of connecting structures are proposed.

Green water loads on sailing ships or floating structures occur when an incoming wave significantly exceeds freeboard and water runs onto the deck. In this paper, numerical programs developed based on the platform of the commercial software Fluent were used to numerically model green water occurrence on floating structures exposed to waves. The phenomena of the fixed floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO) model and oscillating vessels in head waves have been simulated and analyzed. For the oscillating floating body case, a combination idea is presented in which the motions of the FPSO are calculated by the potential theory in advance and computional fluid dynamics (CFD) tools are used to investigate the details of green water. A technique of dynamic mesh is introduced in a numerical wave tank to simulate the green water occurrence on the oscillating vessels in waves. Numerical results agree well with the corresponding experimental results regarding the wave heights on deck and green water impact loads; the two-dimensional fixed FPSO model case conducted by Greco (2001), and the three-dimensional oscillating vessel cases by Buchner (2002), respectively. The research presented here indicates that the present numerical scheme and method can be used to actually simulate the phenomenon of green water on deck, and to predict and analyze the impact forces on floating structures due to green water. This can be of great significance in further guiding ship design and optimization, especially in the strength design of ship bows.

Abstract To ensure acceptable operation and/or survival of floating structures in extreme conditions, nonlinear time-domain simulations are often used to predict the structural response at the design stage. An environmental contour (EC) is commonly employed to identify critical sea states that serve as input for numerical simulations to assess the safety and performance of marine structures. In many studies, marginal and conditional distributions are defined to construct bivariate joint probability distributions for variables such as significant wave height and zero-crossing period; then, environmental contours can be constructed using the inverse first-order reliability method (IFORM). This study adopts alternative models to describe the generalized dependence structure between the environmental variables using copulas; the Nataf transformation is also discussed as a special case. Environmental contours are constructed, making use of measured wave data from moored buoys. Derived design loads are applied on a semi-submersible platform to assess possible differences. In addition, the long-term extremes of the tension of the mooring lines are estimated, considering uncertainties in the structural response using a 3D model (that includes response variability, ignored with the EC approach) to help establish more accurate design loads using Monte Carlo simulation. Results offer a clear indication of the extreme response of the floating structure based on the different models.

Abstract. Coralline algae are important habitat formers found on all rocky shores. While the impact of future ocean acidification on the physiological performance of the species has been well studied, little research has focused on potential changes in structural integrity in response to climate change. A previous study using 2-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) suggested increased vulnerability to fracture (by wave action or boring) in algae grown under high CO2 conditions. To assess how realistically 2-D simplified models represent structural performance, a series of increasingly biologically accurate 3-D FE models that represent different aspects of coralline algal growth were developed. Simplified geometric 3-D models of the genus Lithothamnion were compared to models created from computed tomography (CT) scan data of the same genus. The biologically accurate model and the simplified geometric model representing individual cells had similar average stresses and stress distributions, emphasising the importance of the cell walls in dissipating the stress throughout the structure. In contrast models without the accurate representation of the cell geometry resulted in larger stress and strain results. Our more complex 3-D model reiterated the potential of climate change to diminish the structural integrity of the organism. This suggests that under future environmental conditions the weakening of the coralline algal skeleton along with increased external pressures (wave and bioerosion) may negatively influence the ability for coralline algae to maintain a habitat able to sustain high levels of biodiversity.

The survivability analysis of offshore rock lighthouses requires several assumptions of the pressure distribution due to the breaking wave loading (Raby et al. (2019), Antonini et al. (2019). Due to the peculiar bathymetries and topographies of rock pinnacles, there is no dedicated formula to properly quantify the loads induced by the breaking waves on offshore rock lighthouses. Wienke’s formula (Wienke and Oumeraci (2005) was used in this study to estimate the loads, even though it was not derived for breaking waves on offshore rock lighthouses, but rather for the breaking wave loading on offshore monopiles. However, a thorough sensitivity analysis of the effects of the assumed pressure distribution has never been performed. In this paper, by means of the Wolf Rock lighthouse distinct element model, we quantified the influence of the pressure distributions on the dynamic response of the lighthouse structure. Different pressure distributions were tested, while keeping the initial wave impact area and pressure integrated force unchanged, in order to quantify the effect of different pressure distribution patterns. The pressure distributions considered in this paper showed subtle differences in the overall dynamic structure responses; however, pressure distribution #3, based on published experimental data such as Tanimoto et al. (1986) and Zhou et al. (1991) gave the largest displacements. This scenario has a triangular pressure distribution with a peak at the centroid of the impact area, which then linearly decreases to zero at the top and bottom boundaries of the impact area. The azimuthal horizontal distribution was adopted from Wienke and Oumeraci’s work (2005). The main findings of this study will be of interest not only for the assessment of rock lighthouses but also for all the cylindrical structures built on rock pinnacles or rocky coastlines (with steep foreshore slopes) and exposed to harsh breaking wave loading.

In this paper, a finite element study is conducted using the Green Lagrange strain field based on vonKarman assumptions for the geometric nonlinear static and dynamic response of the laminated functionally graded CNT reinforced (FG-CNTRC) composite plate. The governing equations for determining the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of the FG-CNTRC plate are derived using the Lagrange equation of motion based on Reddy's higher order theory. Using the direct iteration technique, the nonlinear eigenvalues for analyzing the free vibration response are obtained and the nonlinear dynamic responses of the FG-CNTRC plate are encapsulated based on the nonlinear Newmark integration scheme. The impact of the amplitude of vibration on mode switching phenomena and the consequence of the duration of the pulse on the free vibration regime of the plate are outlined. Also, the effect of time dependent loads is studied on the normal stresses of the plate. Furthermore, the impact on the nonlinear static and dynamic response of the laminated FG-CNTRC plate of various parameters such as span-thickness ratio (b/h ratio), aspect ratio (a/b ratio), different edge constraints, CNT fiber gradation, etc. are also studied.

Backlash is a key internal excitation on the dynamic response of planetary gear transmission. After the gear transmission running for a long time under load torque, due to tooth wear accumulation, the backlash between the tooth surface of two mating gears increases, which results in a larger and irregular backlash. However, the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear is generally neglected in lots of dynamics analysis for epicyclic gear trains. In order to investigate the impact of backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic behavior of compound planetary gear set, in this work, first a static tooth surface wear prediction model is incorporated with a dynamic iteration methodology to get the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear for one pair of mating teeth under the condition that contact ratio equals to one. Then in order to introduce the tooth accumulated wear into dynamic model of compound planetary gear set, the backlash excitation generated by tooth accumulated wear for each meshing pair in compound planetary gear set is given under the condition that contact ratio equals to one and does not equal to one. Last, in order to investigate the impact of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic response of compound planetary gear set, a nonlinear lumped-parameter dynamic model of compound planetary gear set is employed to describe the dynamic relationships of gear transmission under the internal excitations generated by worn profile, meshing stiffness, transmission error, and backlash. The results indicate that the introduction of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear makes a significant influence on the bifurcation and chaotic characteristics, dynamic response in time domain, and load sharing behavior of compound planetary gear set.

To explore the mechanical properties of the braided corrugated hose, the space curve parametric equation of the braided tube is deduced, specific to the structural features of the braided tube. On this basis, the equivalent braided tube model is proposed based on the same axial stiffness in order to improve the calculational efficiency. The geometric model and the Finite Element Model of the DN25 braided corrugated hose is established. The numerical simulation results are analyzed, and the distribution of the equivalent stress and frictional stress is discussed. The maximum equivalent stress of the braided corrugated hose occurs at the braided tube, with the value of 903MPa. The maximum equivalent stress of the bellows occurs at the area in contact with the braided tube, with the value of 314MPa. The maximum frictional stress between the bellows and the braided tube is 88.46MPa. The tensile experiment of the DN25 braided corrugated hose is performed. The simulation results are in good agreement with test data, with a maximum error of 9.4%, verifying the rationality of the model. The study is helpful to the research of the axial stiffness of the braided corrugated hose and provides the base for wear and life studies on the braided corrugated hose.

A method is presented for evaluation of the motion of long structures composed of interconnected barges, or modules, of arbitrary shape. Such structures are being proposed in the construction of offshore airports or other large offshore floating structures. It is known that the evaluation of the motion of jointed or otherwise interconnected modules which make up a long floating structure may be evaluated by three dimensional radiation/diffraction analysis. However, the computing effort increases rapidly as the complexity of the geometric shape of the individual modules and the total number of modules increases. This paper describes an approximate method which drastically reduces the computational effort without major effects on accuracy. The method relies on accounting for hydrodynamic interaction effects between only adjacent modules within the structure rather than between all of the modules since the near-field interaction is by far the more important. This approximation reduces the computational effort to that of solving the two-module problem regardless of the total number of modules in the complete structure.

A new kind of pressure coordinated control system suite of regenerative braking system for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) is proposed in this paper on the basis of appropriate transformation on traditional hydraulic braking system with ABS. AMEsim modular simulation platform is used to build a simulation model of the system. Dynamic performances of the key components and system are simulated and analyzed. And the simulation results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the pressure coordinated control system, which lays the foundation of the design and optimization for the regenerative braking system.

In recent years, most fluid produced or exported has been transported using steel catenary risers (SCRs) attached to deepwater floating structures. The SCRs are terminated at the floating structures using Top Termination Units (TTUs) such as flexible joints or tapered stress joints. The flexible joints are usually designed to allow the riser to rotate with the floating structure motion and reduce the amount of moments transferred to the hull structure. The flexible joints depend on the flexibility and compressibility of the elastomer layers to allow for the rotation of the SCR. The stress joints, alternatively, provide fixed support at the hull and thus larger bending moment that has to be accounted for in the hull design. The stress joints can be made of steel or titanium material. The SCR TTU’s receptacle, which will be welded to the hull porch and contains the TTU basket, has to be designed to meet the force and reaction requirements associated with the selected TTU type. However, in some cases which could be due to failure of the TTU to meet the expected life or the operational requirements, the operators may have to replace the damaged TTU with another one or with a different TTU type. A few examples are available in the Gulf of Mexico. Recently the Flexible Joint TTU of the Independent Hub 20-inch export SCR had an operational problem. During the course of investigating the related issues and studying possible solutions, one option considered was the feasibility of replacing the Flexible Joint (FJ) with Titanium Tapered Stress Joint (TSJ). This paper highlights the issues that have to be considered in the design of the FJ existing receptacle to accommodate the force reactions of a Titanium TSJ. These issues are addressed and the results of the detailed finite element analysis performed are provided. The analysis conclusions, which are related to the feasibility of the existing receptacle to receive the loads imposed by TSJ and the modifications required to achieve this, are presented.
