Investigating Crowdworkers' Identify, Perception and Practices in Micro-Task Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing is rapidly gaining popularity among academic and business communities. Yet, our understanding of this work way is still in its incipient stage, in particular regarding the increasingly large and diverse crowdworkers. As such, we aim to understand crowdworkers' perception and experience to themselves and their work from their own perspective. We explore this by a mix-methods study of crowdworkers in Ali, one of prominent micro-task crowdsourcing platforms in China. Our findings highlight crowdworker in Ali is not only a coded name, but also an identity with some positive attitudes and beliefs towards work and life. In particular, this identity provides many socio-psychological benefits for crowdworkers, which further contributes to their consistent engagement in Ali and proactive practices to improve crowdworker communities and Ali platform collaboratively. We according suggest that taking crowdworker identity as a lens for crowdsourcing research, and turning attention towards construction and expressions of crowdworkers' identity and values in their own context.

Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of foreign students toward the use of medical cannabis (MC) for pain management. Methods: This study uses data collected from 549 foreign students from India (n = 289) and Middle Eastern countries mostly from Egypt, Iran, Syria, and Jordan (n = 260) studying medicine in Russia and Belarus. Data collected from Russian and Belarusian origin medical students (n = 796) were used for comparison purposes. Pearson’s chi-squared and t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: Foreign students’ country of origin and gender statuses do not tend to be correlated with medical student responses toward medical cannabis use. Students from Russia and Belarus who identified as secular, compared to those who were religious, reported more positive attitudes toward medical cannabis and policy change. Conclusions: This study is the first to examine the attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs toward medical cannabis among foreign students from India and Middle Eastern countries studying in Russia and Belarus, two countries who oppose its recreational and medicine use. Indian and Middle Eastern students, as a group, tend to be more supportive of MC than their Russian and Belarusian counterparts. These results may be linked to cultural and historical reasons. This study provides useful information for possible medical and allied health curriculum and education purposes.

ObjectivesThis study assessed knowledge, beliefs and practices of elite female footballers regarding injury prevention.MethodsA survey was sent to players participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019. Questions covered three injury prevention domains: (1) knowledge; (2) attitudes and beliefs; (3) prevention practices in domestic clubs. Additionally, ACL injury history was assessed.ResultsOut of 552 players, 196 women responded (35.5%). More than 80% of these considered injury risk to be moderate or high. Players listed knee, ankle, thigh, head and groin as the most important injuries in women’s football. The most important risk factors identified were low muscle strength, followed by poor pitch quality, playing on artificial turf, too much training, reduced recovery and hard tackles. In these elite players, 15% did not have any permanent medical staff in their domestic clubs, yet more than 75% had received injury prevention advice and more than 80% performed injury prevention exercises in their clubs. Players identified the two most important implementation barriers as player motivation and coach attitude. Two-thirds of players used the FIFA 11+ programme in their clubs.ConclusionsThis diverse group of elite players demonstrated good knowledge of risk level and injury types in women’s football. Of the risk factors emphasised by players, there was only one intrinsic risk factor (strength), but several factors out of their control (pitch quality and type, training volume and hard tackles). Still players had positive attitudes and beliefs regarding injury prevention exercises and indicated a high level of implementation, despite a lack of medical support.

The goal of the Databases for Many Majors project is to engage a broad audience in understanding fundamental database concepts using visualizations with color and visual cues to present these topics to students across many disciplines. There are three visualizations: introducing relational databases, querying, and design. A unique feature of these learning tools is the ability for instructors in diverse disciplines to customize the content of the visualization’s example data, supporting text, and formative assessment questions to promote relevance to their students. This paper presents a study on the impact of the customized introduction to relational databases visualization on both conceptual learning and attitudes towards databases. The assessment was performed in three different courses across two universities. The evaluation shows that learning outcomes are met with any visualization, which appears to be counter to expectations. However, students using a visualization customized to the course context had more positive attitudes and beliefs towards the usefulness of databases than the control group.

Nurses may have an important role in supporting patients' decision making about their participation in clinical trials. Nurses' views about clinical trials and patients' understanding of the clinical trial process may shape the role nurses play in these trials. Little is known about transplant nurses' attitudes and beliefs toward clinical trials. This quantitative study employed a survey method involving a convenience sample of transplant nurses (n=39) in an urban hospital in Southern Ontario to describe attitudes and beliefs of transplant nurses toward clinical trials. The results indicated that transplant nurses had positive attitudes and beliefs toward clinical trials. Specifically, outpatient coordinators and older nurses were more positive in their attitudes. Nurses perceived transplant patients were knowledgeable about clinical trials. The majority of nurses (85%) engaged in the conduct of clinical trials. Transplant nurses also suggested educational, administrative and financial support as beneficial to further enhance their participation in these trials.

Meeting the diverse and various needs of learners, who come from different cultural and social environments, imposes changes in a modern education system through the implementation of new teaching approaches and practices, such as differentiated instruction. This literature review examines 16 studies regarding differentiated instruction in higher education which have taken place during the last decade. The results of the research revealed that differentiated instruction contributes to mobilizing preservice teachers, improving their performance and developing positive attitudes and beliefs of trainees and educators in higher education. There is also a need for further research regarding the effectiveness of the implementation of differentiated instruction in higher education, especially in Greece, where no relevant research has been conducted, compared to the international field.

The present study aimed to 1) investigate English teachers’ perspectives on using music in English teaching in Thai secondary schools; and 2) explore the problems teachers met while using music to teach English in Thai secondary schools. Participants in the present study were 55 English teachers from different secondary schools in central Bangkok, Thailand. The instrument for the current study was a questionnaire which included 24 Likert-scale items about teachers’ perspectives involving the attitudes, beliefs, intentions and problems of using music in English teaching, and one open-ended question asking about the problems teachers met while using music in their English teaching. Results from the quantitative data of the current study revealed the significantly positive attitudes and beliefs of the English teachers in Thai secondary schools on using music in English teaching, however, the results of open-ended question mismatched with the teachers’ attitudes and beliefs, which indicated that teachers actually did not use music in their English teaching frequently. The reasons and recommendations for future research have been discussed.

Background: Overweight/obesity has increased worldwide in recent decades. The prevalence of children who are overweight/obese has also increased in Taiwan. Nursing professionals’ attitudes and beliefs may affect the quality of care for children who are overweight and obese.Purpose: To explore the attitudes and beliefs of nursing students about children who are overweight/obese in Taiwan.Methods: A self-administered translated questionnaire was completed by two groups (2-year program and 4-year program) of undergraduate nursing students in Taiwan. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-test.Results: Data from this study indicated that two groups (2-year program and 4-year program) of undergraduate nursing students hold positive attitudes towards overweight/obese children. The 2-year program nursing students held more neutral attitudes about overweight/obese children. Neither group had strong beliefs related to children’s eating habits.Conclusions: Education is one way to improve attitudes and beliefs towards childhood overweight/obesity. The data from this study provides information for the development of curricula for nursing students.

In developing the language education policy, the Council of Europe recognised the promotion of language diversity as one of Europe's key goals and e thus emphasised the teaching and dissemination of the languages of EU Member States. The development of plurilingual and multilingual competences involves, among other things, the forming of positive attitudes towards foreign/second/additional languages. It is assumed that teachers play an important role in developing learnersʼ language attitudes and can have a considerable influence on their beliefs. Therefore, the main aim of the present study is to identify and explore future teachers‟ attitudes towards linguistic diversity from a comparative perspective. A survey conducted among Slovene and German students who are studying to be primary school teachers looks atthe respondents‟general attitudes and beliefs related to language learning and linguistic diversity, their motivation for learning additional languages and their attitudes towards connecting language and culture. Finally, since the two institutions surveyed are both located in bilingual environments, the study investigates the different ways in which environmental factors shape education students‟ views and attitudes towards multilingualism. The results suggest a rather complex picture of attitudes and beliefs as expressed by the population surveyed.

The paper shows the results of surveying managers on the implementation of the regulations on assessing primary school students according to Circular 22. The surveyed sample consists of 452 managers of 67 primary schools in 6 provinces. The survey results shows that the majority of managers have good understanding of the purpose, principles, scientific basis, ways of assessing primary students according to this circular and to competence based approach. At the same time, they also have positive attitudes and beliefs about changes in teachers. They self-assessed that there were relatively appropriate instructions and monitoring methods in implementing the regulations for assessing elementary school students. However, there was still a considerable number of managers who misunderstood and faced of many difficulties. It is a necessary and useful material for educators to re-consider the advantages and disadvantages in the process of realizing the evaluation of elementary school students so that they will have remedial strategies and solutions in the coming time

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the contribution of the eportfolio to the development of positive attitudes and beliefs of students towards school and learning, as well as to the acquisition of self-assessment skills by students. The method used is the experiment using an experimental and a control group and two pre and post measurements. The survey was carried out during the first trimester of the school year 2016-2017 and a sample of 40 pupils of the second grade of the elementary school in the city of Rhodes. The findings of the survey show that students of both groups after the end of the intervention have a more positive attitude towards school and learning, but the experimental group that utilized the eportfolio has even higher rates of positive responses. In addition, in relation to the contribution of the eportfolio to the development of self-assessment skills by students, the students of the e-portfolio experimental group evaluated their performance higher than their teacher's assessment.
