The objective of this study was to investigate whether serum cytokine levels correlate with depression and anxiety in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Twenty patients hospitalized for surgical resection of CRC were included in the study group and twenty healthy volunteers comprised the control group. Depression and anxiety were analyzed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-α, and TGF-βwere measured by Cytometric Bead Array. We found that more than half of CRC patients presented clinically significant levels of anxiety or depression, and 65% of them manifested a combination of severe anxiety and depression. CRC patients had increased serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α but lower IL-10 concentrations. Correlation analysis between HADS score and cytokine levels revealed a positive association of anxiety and/or depression with IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α and a negative correlation with IL-10. These results indicate that circulating proinflammatory cytokines are involved in the pathophysiology of anxiety and depression in CRC patients. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in these psychological disorders will allow the design of therapeutic interventions that lead to an improved quality of life and overall survival of CRC patients.

Introduction. The patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) always have emotional implications. As the branch of traditional Chinese medicine, Five-Animal Frolics Exercise (FAE) is a popular mind-body exercise in China and shown to improve emotional wellbeing. Aim. We aimed to explore the effects of FAE on the emotional disorders of CHD patients. Methods. CHD patients were assigned into an experiment group (EG, FAE) and a control group (CG, routine nursing care). We measured serum levels of miR-124 and miR-135 and scores of the Hamilton Depression/Anxiety scale (HAMD/HAMA), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results. After a 3-month FAE intervention, serum levels of miR-124 and miR-135 and the scores of HAMD/HAMA, SAS, SDS, and PSQI in the EG group were lower than those in the CG group, while SF-36 scores in the EG group were higher than those in the CG group (p<0.05). Serum levels of miR-124 and miR-135 had a strong relationship with SAS and SDS scores (p<0.05). Discussion/Implications for Practice. The study suggests that FAE intervention controls anxiety and depression outcomes and improves life quality in CHD patients by affecting serum levels of miR-124 and miR-135.

Background: Stress that is induced by sleep deprivation can modulate the damage of periodontal tissue by elevating the levels of proinflammatory cytokines (i.e. IL-1β and TNF-α). The effects of sleep deprivation can be resolved with sleep recovery. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is fluid in sulcular gingiva which acts as an oral biomarker for evaluating periodontal abnormalities. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of various induction methods of sleep deprivation stress on cytokine levels in GCF of white male Wistar strain rats (Rattus novergicus). Methods: The study method was true experimental with a posttest-only control group design. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD), total sleep deprivation (TSD), partial sleep deprivation with sleep recovery for five days (PSD+SR), total sleep deprivation with sleep recovery for five days (TSD+SR) and a healthy control group. Data were analysed via one-way ANOVA to determine differences between groups. Result: The results showed the highest level of IL-1β and TNF-α was found in the PSD group. One-way ANOVA analysis showed significant differences (p<0,05) of IL-1β level between PSD and control groups, PSD and PSD+SR groups and PSD and TSD+SR groups; in contrast, the analysis of TNF-α levels showed significant differences (p<0,05) between PSD group to control group, PSD to PSD+SR group and TSD to TSD+SR group. Conclusions: There is an effect of various induction methods of sleep deprivation stress on proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α).

Objective: We aimed to explore the effect of Poria polysaccharide oral liquid (PPOL) on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in postoperative patients with colorectal cancer. Methods: Fifty patients with colorectal cancer who were diagnosed in our hospital from March 2015 to March 2019 were included in this retrospective study. They were all underwent tumor resection. They were randomly divided into control group (n = 25) and observation group (n = 25). Patients in the control group were treated according to the F0LF0X4 chemotherapy regimen, and those in the observation group were treated with F0LF0X4 chemotherapy plus PPOL (10 ml/time, 3 times/day) for 6 weeks. The quality of life index (QL-index) and brief fatigue scale (BFI) were used to investigate the quality of life and fatigue, respectively. The serum levels of inflammatory factors, IL-6 and TNF-a, were measured. Results: Compared with the control group, the QL-index score in the observation group was significantly better (P< 0.05). Moreover, the BFI in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in the observation group were notably decreased in comparison with the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: PPOL can effectively improve the fatigue state of postoperative patients with colorectal cancer by reducing the levels of IL-6 and TNF- α and improving the quality of life.

Background: Hypothyroidism has several symptoms (weight gain, arrhythmias, mood changes, etc.). The aims of this study were (1) to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in levothyroxine-treated hypothyroid women and in women without hypothyroidism; (2) to identify variables associated with anxiety and depression. Methods: A case-control study was performed with 393 women. Case-group: 153 levothyroxine-treated hypothyroid women. Control-group: 240 women without hypothyroidism. Convenience sampling. Instrument: The Hamilton Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of anxiety in levothyroxine-treated hypothyroid women was higher than in women without hypothyroidism (29.4% vs. 16.7%, χ2 p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression in the case group was higher than in the control group (13.1% vs. 4.6%, χ2 p < 0.001). Levothyroxine-treated hypothyroid women were more likely to have anxiety (OR = 2.08, CI: 1.28–3.38) and depression (OR = 3.13, IC = 1.45–6.45). Conclusion: In spite of receiving treatment with levothyroxine, women with hypothyroidism are more likely to have depression and anxiety. Health professionals need to assess the mood of women with hypothyroidism. Although levothyroxine is a good treatment for the symptoms of hypothyroidism, it may not be enough to prevent development or persistence of depression and anxiety by itself.

Objective: To study the correlation between depression and blood cytokine levels in lung cancer patients.Methods: 92 patients with advanced lung cancer were evaluated for depression using the scoring index of depression self-rating scale. Lack of depression (n=24), mild depression (n=45), and moderate depression (n=23) were found in the cohort. Meanwhile, 40 healthy subjects were selected as the control group. The levels of IL-10, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α in each group were detected by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and their correlation with the degree of depression was analyzed.Results: The levels of IL-10, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were all higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Moreover, the depression statuses of patients with lung cancer were positively correlated with IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-α levels (r = 0.705, 0.301, and 0.446, P<0.01); however, the level of IL-8 was not relevant (r=0.136, p>0.05).Conclusion: Serum levels of IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-α are associated with depression scoring in patients with lung cancer.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> Threatened abortion is a stressful condition for a pregnant woman which may influence mental health. This study aims to investigate the relationship between threatened abortion, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy. </p><p><strong>Study Design:</strong> Study group consisted of 121 pregnant women &lt;20 weeks of gestation having vaginal bleeding; control group consisted of 129 pregnant women &lt;20 weeks of gestation not having vaginal bleeding in their pregnancy until that time. Hospital anxiety and depression scale was used to assess potential anxiety and depression. </p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Statistical analyses indicated that (i) vaginal bleeding group had significantly higher rates of moderate/ severe anxiety (28.1% vs. 14.7% p=0.010); (ii) there was no statistically significant difference between depression rates of the women according to the presence of vaginal bleeding (38.8% vs. 34.9% p=0.517); (iii) low education (OR=2.233; 95% CI: 1.177-4.236; p=0.014) was possible predictors of antenatal depression. Although in the univariate analyses age, gravidity, and parity were associated with anxiety, only nulliparity was found as possible predictors of anxiety (OR=2.589; 95% CI: 1.362-4.922, p=0.004). </p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Pregnant women without obstetric complications had similar rates of depression and anxiety as in women with threatened abortion, although anxiety levels were higher in women with threatened abortion. </p>

In this study we compared the levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL10 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in population samples characterized by a high or low level of self-reported depression. We measured serum IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α in two cohorts which differed in scoring on the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSDS). The group with a high score in ZSDS (average SDS index = 62.9) was called DEP (n=27), the group with a low score in ZSDS (average SDS index = 29.9) was called NDEP (n=16). The groups did not significantly differ in age, waist circumference and body mass index. For the assessment of serum cytokine levels multiplex immunoanalytic xMAP(LUMINEX) technology was used. We found lower IL-6 in the DEP group (medians; DEP 4.08 pg/ml vs. NDEP 6.11 pg/ml) on the border of statistical significance in multiple regression analysis (p=0.049). Serum levels of all other studied cytokines were not significantly different (medians; IL-8: DEP 2.18 pg/ml vs. NDEP 2.61 pg/ml; IL-10: DEP 2.85 pg/ml vs. NDEP 2.94 pg/ml; TNF-α: DEP 2.32 pg/ml vs. NDEP 2.30 pg/ml). These results are in contradiction to the prevailing opinion that proinflammatory cytokine levels are elevated in people with symptoms of depression.

Curcumin exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects and has been suggested as a treatment for inflammatory diseases. The study is aimed at evaluating the effect of curcumin gel on serum levels of micronutrients (zinc, copper, and magnesium) and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α) in chronic periodontitis patients. Ninety subjects with an age of 25-54 were included in this study. From the total number, 30 subjects with healthy periodontium (control group) ( mean   age = 37.30 ± 7.08 ) were employed for the sole purpose of obtaining the normal mean values of clinical, chemical, and immunological parameters, and 60 with chronic periodontitis ( mean   age = 36.73 ± 6.22 ) were divided randomly into 2 groups, of which each group included 30 subjects. Group A received scaling and root planing SRP and curcumin gel injection covered by Coe pack for 7 days, and group B received SRP alone covered by Coe pack. Clinical parameters (plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, pocket depth, and clinical attachment loss measurements) and blood samples were collected before and after 1 month of treatment to measure serum levels of zinc, copper, magnesium, IL-1β, and TNF-α. The results showed significant micronutrient alteration and increase of proinflammatory cytokines in the chronic periodontitis group as compared to healthy control ( P ≤ 0.05 ), and curcumin gel had a significant effect on the reduction of IL-1β, TNF-α, copper, and clinical parameters ( P ≤ 0.05 ) and increase of zinc and magnesium levels after 1 month as compared to baseline ( P ≤ 0.05 ), nearly the same pattern for group B but with nonsignificant differences for Zn ( P > 0.05 ). In conclusion, curcumin gel resulted in a more significant reduction in clinical parameters, inflammatory mediators, and copper and increase of zinc and magnesium levels as compared to SRP alone.

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) and especially resistant forms of it have a substantial economic burden on the community health system for diagnosis and treatment each year. Thus, investigation of this field is a priority for the world health organization (WHO). Cytokines play important roles in the relationship between the immune system and tuberculosis. Genetic variations especially single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) impact cytokine levels and function against TB. Material and Methods: In this research SNPs in IFN-γ (+874 T/A) and IL-10 (-592 A/C) genes, and the effects of these SNPs on cytokine levels in a total of 87 tuberculosis patients and 100 healthy controls (HCs) were studied. TB patients divided into two groups: 1) 67 drug-sensitive (DS-TB) and 2) 20 drug-resistant (DR-TB) according to drug sensitivity test using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). For the genotyping of two SNPs, the PCR-based method was used and IFN-γ and IL-10 levels were measured by ELISA in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and control group. Results: In -592A/C SNP, only two genotypes (AA, AC) were observed and both genotypes showed statistically significant differences between DR-TB and HCs (p=0.011). IL-10 serum levels in PTB patients were higher than HCs (p=0.02). The serum levels of IFN-γ were significantly higher in DS-TB patients than that of the other two groups (p<0.001); however, no significant differences were observed for allele and genotype frequencies in IFN-γ +874. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the SNP at -592 position of IL-10 gene may be associated with the susceptibility to DR-TB. However, further investigation is necessary.
