Objective. The integrity and the wholesomeness of the food served to school pupils cannot be overlooked, especially when one considers the magnitude of health and sanitation issues that are plaguing the West African nations. This study aimed to investigate some of the personal hygiene practices by the pupils and the hygienic conditions in which food is cooked and served to these school-going children under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP). Design. A cross-sectional and descriptive survey research designs were used in the study. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed in selecting participants. Participants. There were 720 respondents for the study, comprising 600 pupils, 60 teachers, and 60 kitchen staff members from 20 schools. Information was obtained using questionnaire, observation, and unstructured interview instruments. Results. Findings from the study revealed that the majority of pupils (92% in Wa and 65% in Cape Coast) did not wash their hands with soap under running water. No hand washing centers for pupils were also seen in most of the schools studied. Majority of the cooks did not have health certificate, and neither had attended any in-service training in two years. In both Wa and Cape Coast municipal schools, none of the kitchen staff admitted that pupils and teachers ever complained about the meals they served to the pupils. Conclusion. The GSFP in basic schools forms part of the integral diet of the school children; hence, provision of good quality food can affect the health, learning, and physical activities of these children. Observational checklist revealed that most of the kitchen staff do not strictly adhere to basic food hygiene practices, and this affects the wholesomeness of the food served to the children. There is, therefore, a need for kitchen staff training on hygiene and food preparation practices.

<p>Diarrhoea, a major contributor of childhood morbidity and mortality is mostly caused by poor hygiene and sanitation. Literature reveal that hygiene practices at household levels greatly affects the occurrence of diarrhoea among children. A cross sectional study was conducted to determine association between hygiene knowledge and practices of mothers with occurrence of diarrhoea in young children below 3 years in the tribal villages of Gujarat. Structured questionnaire was used to elicit information on personal hygiene (PH), food Hygiene (FH), and environmental Hygiene (EH) practices of 536 mothers with children between 6-36 months of age. Past one month diarrhoeal episodes were recorded using the recall method. The mean percent scores for FH, PH and EH practices were 77%, 88% and 80% respectively. Almost 35% children suffered from diarrhoea in the past one month of which 10 were admitted to the hospital. Diarrhoeal incidences were associated with FH and EH practices (p&lt;0.001) and not with PH practices. Improvement in the environmental and personal hygiene practices of the mothers can contribute largely in reducing the prevalence of diarrhoea among children in Chikhli taluka of Gujarat.</p>

Leukorrhea (Vaginal discharge) is one of the reproductive health problems that adolescent girls face. According to research, 75% of women worldwide have experienced leukorrhea. Leukorrhea, alternatively referred to as fluor albus, is a symptom of the female reproductive organs disease that can result in severe complications if left untreated. It is believed that a low level of knowledge, negative attitudes, and bad personal hygiene habits contribute to pathological leukorrhea. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of knowledge, attitudes, and personal hygiene behaviour on pathological leukorrhea in adolescent girls attending the Vocational High School (SMK) 'Aisyiyah Palembang in 2020. This study used an analytical cross-sectional design and a simple random sampling method with 92 respondents. The results indicated a statistical significance between pathological leukorrhea and knowledge (p-value 0.004), attitude (p-value 0.001), and personal hygiene behaviour (p-value 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that the bad personal hygiene behaviour variable (p-value 0.018) was the most determinant associated with pathological leukorrhea (PR = 3.305, 95 per cent confidence interval [CI]:1.232-8.868). This study concludes that persistently bad personal hygiene practices may increase the risk of pathological leukorrhea in adolescent girls. Suggestions for young women to reduce their reliance on pantyliners, wear sweat-absorbing underwear, and avoid tight underwear.

ABSTRAKSkabies merupakan penyakit infeksi menular yang disebabkan oleh infeksi dan sensitisasi oleh tungau Sarcoptes scabei var hominis (Sarcoptes sp.). Penularan dapat terjadi secara langsung dan tidak langsung. Salah satu dampak kejadian skabies yaitu personal hygiene yang buruk. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui hubungan personal hygiene dengan kejadian penyakit skabies pada santri Wustho di Pondok (SMP) Pesantren Al-Falah Putera Banjarbaru. Metode penelitian ini adalah penelitian korelasional dengan pendekatan cross-sectional.Tteknik sampling menggunakan probality sampling dengan simple random sampling. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh santri wustho kelas 1 yang berasrama sebanyak 341 santri. Sampel yang digunakan ada 184 santri yang berasrama.H asil analisis didapatkan personal hygiene baik terkena skabies 24% dan personal hygiene baik tidak terkena skabies 76%. Personal hygiene buruk terkena skabies 53% dan personal hygiene buruk tidak terkena skabies 47 %. Hasil uji chi- square didapatkan nilai= 0,000 (r) = 12.590. Kesimpulan penelitian ini personal hygiene berhubungan dengan kejadian skabies. Hygiene perseorangan merupakan salah satu usaha yang dapat mencegah kejadian skabies.Kata- kata kunci : personal hygiene, skabies, pesantren.ABSTRACTScabies is a contagious infectious disease caused by infection and sensitization by Sarcoptes scabei var hominis mites (Sarcoptes sp.). transmission can occur directly and indirectly. one of the effects of scabies is poor personal hygiene. To determine the correlation personal hygiene with incidence of scabies in Islamic boarding Wustho students (SMP) Al Falah Putera Banjarbaru. This study was a correlational study with cross-sectional approach, using sampling techniques probality sampling with simple random sampling. The population was all studentswere Islamic boarding wustho in first class as many as 341 students. Total respondent were 184 students in Islamic boarding. Analysis of the Personal hygiene exposed to scabies 24% good, good personal hygiene was not affected by scabies 76%. Personal hygiene badly affected by scabies 53%, poor personal hygiene was not affected by scabies 47%. Result of correlation chisquare test p value = 0.000 and (r) = 12.590. personal hygiene associated with the incidence ofscabies. Personal hygiene was one of effort that can prevent the incidence of scabies.Keywords: personal hygiene, scabies, islamic boarding.

Street-vended foods are a major threat to public health because of their microbial contamination. This study investigated hygiene practices and microbial contamination of street foods in Kenyatta University’s environs. Both cross-sectional and experimental designs were adopted. Four (4) major vending stalls at the main entrance to Kenyatta University, gate (A) and at the hind gate at KM shopping center were identified for this study. Twelve (12) food samples were collected from these stalls; sausages, samosas and kachumbari. The foods were collected and transported in cooler boxes to the Microbiology Laboratory at Kenyatta University within 3 hours for analyses. Standard microbiological methods were used for enumeration of Salmonella, coliforms and Escherichia coli. No Salmonella was detected per 25g in all food samples tested. Fifty percent (50%) of kachumbari samples tested positive for E.coli whereas samosas and sausages tested negative. Kachumbari, from all vending stalls, had total coliform levels 4.12 log10 cfu/g, 4.26 log10 cfu/g and 4.21 log10 cfu/g, that did not meet the quality standards (4.00 log10 cfu/g) for ready-to-eat foods. Total coliform counts were below detection limits in samosas and sausages. All (100%) the stalls were exposed to potential contaminants: 75% of the vendors did not wear protective clothing, they handled money and sold food simultaneously, and polythene bags exposed to open air, were used for packaging take away rations. All the foods evaluated were safe for human consumption except kachumbari. Policies on safe street food to be enforced and education and training of vendors on environmental and personal hygiene to be strengthened.

Salah satu permasalahan yang sering dihadapi santri Pondok Pesantren Al-Ikhwan adalah personal higiene, seperti kebersihan kulit, tangan, kuku, genitalia, kaki dan pakaian. Kebiasaan hidup untuk menjaga kebersihan diri pribadi yang tidak baik merupakan salah satu penyebab timbulnya masalah kesehatan berupa penyakit skabies. Skabies merupakan salah satu penyakit kulit yang paling sering ditemukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui analisis sanitasi lingkungan dan personal higiene dengan kejadian skabies pada santri di pondok pesantren Al-Ikhwan Kota Pekanbaru. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskripsi analitik dan desain cross sectional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah santriwati berjumlah 143 santri. Sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 83 santri, dengan kriteria inklusi merupakan siswa yang bersedia menjadi responden di kelas VII-IX. Teknik pegambilan sampel menggunakan simple random sampling. Hasil uji statistik Chi Square untuk personal hygiene diperoleh nilai p =0,047, POR (95% CI) = 3,010 (1,119-8,098) artinya terdapat hubungan antara personal higiene terhadap kejadian skabies di Pondok Pesantren Al-Ikhwan dan juga terdapat hubungan antara pengetahuan dengan skabies di Pondok Pesantren Al-Ikhwan dengan nilai p = 0,011, POR (95% CI) = 0,254 (0,095-0,681). Simpulannya adalah ada hubungan antara personal hygiene dan pengetahuan terhadap kejadian scabies pada santri di Pondok Pesantren Al-Ikhwan Pekanbaru. Saran kepada pihak manajemen pondok pesantren untuk memberikan sosialiasi tentang pola prilaku hidup bersih dan personal higiene kepada santri agar dapat menimbulkan kesadaran yang tinggi terhadap perilaku kesehatan yang baik dalam mencegah penularan penyakit skabies.

Background: COVID-19 is an pandemic, including Indonesia. PHBS (Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour) is an effort to strengthen the behaviour of a person, group, and community to care for and prioritize health to create a higher quality life. Community participation in efforts to prevent COVID-19 is an important factor in breaking the chain of infection. As 9 July 2020 3 residents have been confirmed positive for COVID-19 in Randuboto Village. Objectives: Therefore this research was carried out to analyze the factors related to PHBS practices durung the COVID-19 pandemic in Randuboto Village, Gresik Regency. Research Metodes: This type of research used in this study is an observational study using a cross sectional approach. The population in this study was the total population of Randuboto Village, Gresik Regency which was recorded as many as 4,006 people. The sampling technique used in this study was snowball sampling. The nimber of samples taken was 108 samples that met the inclusion criteria. The independent variables in this study are the level of knowledge, attitudes, and the availability of supporting facilities for the respondents. The dependent variable in this study is PHBS practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: PHBS practices in Randuboto Village, Gresik Regency during the COVID-19 pandemic showed good practice at 55,6%. This is related to the activity of washing hands with soap and running water, diligently eat healthy foods, regularly do physical activity/ exercise, smoking outside the house, regularly cleaning the neighborhood where I live, regularly leaving the house during the COVID-19 emergency using a mask, frequently visiting public places and being crowded during colds.  The majority of respondents were ≤ 25 years old, which was 63,9%, while the majority of respondents education level was Senior High School  at 53,7%. The majority of respondents types of work are other at 52,8%. The variable related to the practice of PHBS during the COVID-19 pandemic are the level of knowledge(0,001), attitudes (0,001), and the availability of supporting facilities (0,001). Conclusion: Most of the respondents have a poor level of knowledge, good attitude, availability of adequate supporting infrastructure and good PHBS practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.The practice of PHBS during the COVID-19 pandemic In the environment around Randuboto Village, Gresik regency needs to be improved again, especially in knowledge, as weel as the availability of supporting facilities. It is hoped that the community an also improve personal hygiene such as washing hands regularly and wearing masks when doing activities outside. Introduction. Personal hygiene is essential to the current paradigm shift towards predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine, which enables the prediction and prevention of infectious disease outbreaks. Objective. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the personal hygiene practices among university students aiming at providing a basis for preventive and predictive medical interventions and to make future efforts improve target interventions for young people. Methods. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional study. Validated instruments that related personal hygiene practices were used to obtain quantitative data from 412 tertiary students from seven universities in Accra, Ghana. The resulting data were analyzed with IBM-SPSS, version 23. Results. There were more female respondents (54.4%) in the study than male respondents (45.6%). Respondents between the age group of 19-24 years constituted majority (59.7%) of the respondents in the study. Respondents from urban areas exhibited good hygiene practice compared to those from urban residences. There was a significant association between residence and hygiene practice (χ2=17.8, P≤0.001). We also observed that those respondents within the upper class in society had a poor hygiene practice, compared to the Lower Class and Middle Class respondents. Lack of education (63.1%) was observed as the main barrier to personal hygiene among the respondents. Future of the society depends on the health of its youth. Conclusion. A significant number of students are not actively practicing good hygiene. There is a need for deployment of preventive medicine interventions targeted at young people. It calls for improvement in methods of hygiene education for young people in tertiary institutions and the inclusion of hygiene in school curricula.

Background: Poor hygiene practices and inadequate sanitary conditions play major roles in the increased burden of communicable diseases within developing countries. Objectives: To know knowledge and practice regarding hygiene and sanitation of households and to find out the hygienic practices with selected variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 30th April to 13th May 2012 in Dhankuta Municipality where 300 households were taken as subjects. Among 9 wards, 3 wards were randomly selected and equal number of households (100) from each ward was selected on the basis of simple random sampling. Semi-structured questionnaire was used and face to face interview was conducted. Chi-square test was applied to find out the hygienic practices with selected variables. Results: Most of respondents believed that hand washing reduces diseases (71.3%). They knew that diarrhoea is spread by dirty environment (55.7%) and drinking unsafe water (46.3%) and unhygienic food (43.3%). Majority of respondents (95.3%) washing hands with soap and water after defecation. Almost (30%) respondents used burning as a management of solid waste. The ladies were found to have better hygienic practices (92%) than gents (61.6%) and Brahmin/Chhetri (70%) were more hygienic than other ethnic groups.  Conclusion: The knowledge and practice on hygiene and sanitation among the households of Dhankuta municipality was found to be fair.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/hren.v12i1.11985         Health Renaissance 2014;12(1):44-48
