Background. In many countries frontline emergency workers of different specialties face the need to inform people of their relatives’ death and to support them during the acute period following the message. The need for psychological training in this area is evident. However, the research in this area is not only complicated in terms of logistics, but also hindered by a number of ethical difficulties. The analysis presented in this paper has significant practical value and draws on the unique professional perspective of the EMERCOM emergency psychologists who provide psychological support to people experiencing loss in an acute period — relatives and loved ones of those who died in emergencies. Objective. To give an outline of approaches to psychological support in cases of loss, of the factors influencing adaptation to a loss, and of the opportunities for early psychological interventions. Design. The theoretical overview presents the analysis of foreign experience and main approaches to announcing the death of a relative. The following section describes and analyses the main approaches and practical experience of the EMERCOM psychologists. The conclusion outlines the possibilities of a systematic approach to providing emergency psychological aid in cases of loss. Results. The study presents a list of characteristics of support providers, recipients and situations that need to be taken into account when choosing a strategy of work with people experiencing a recent loss. Conclusion. The study allows to single out three main thematic blocks, the consideration of which is necessary when choosing a strategy for dealing with loss in an acute period. First, features of the situation; second, characteristics of the person experiencing loss; third, the characteristic of the support provider. The process of psychological support, as described in the paper, includes assessment and consideration of the objective characteristics of the situation, the recipient’s characteristics and response, and the characteristics of the specialist himself. The interpretation of relationship between these factors and their influence on the condition of the person who experiences a loss allows the psychologist to choose the most effective strategy for providing psychological support.

Introduction:In the Netherlands, we started in 2016 with a new procedure for large scale medical assistance during a crisis. The normal daily assistance in the Netherlands is organized on a regional level, and we have 25 regions. These regions are far too small to handle big incidents, and cooperation is needed on a higher level to generate enough capacity. However, the Aim is that most emergency workers continue to do their own work in standard procedures, we also need more coordination, information management, transition of “stay and play” to “scoop and run” and deploying volunteers and citizens.Aim:We developed the model practice-based, however, we have little big incidents. We feel the urgency to compare this practice to international knowledge. Methods:The goal is twofold: validation of the starting points of our model, but also further improvement: speeding up the transport and treatment of patients, improvement of capacity, safety of the ambulance staff – especially with terrorist attacks or contamination, civil participation. We held the first survey on scientific literature in English, related to items in our prehospital assistance model. (the article is not yet published). Results:The conclusion was, that scientific articles are rare, however, a lot of information is given about the practical course of incidents. Scientific research to explore these experiences is rare, partly due to a missing universal terminology on disaster medicine.Discussion:We want to contribute to enlarging the scientific knowledge on large scale prehospital assistance. We expect that a lot of practical experience can be unlocked by bringing together experts in this field. We want to present the Dutch model, with a focus and invitation to compare this with the models in other countries, to compare experiences, to deepen them and to stimulate international research. We want to commit ourselves to facilitate this.

This research aims to better understand performance under pressure as experienced by health and emergency staff in the workplace. Three basic questions underpin the work: (1) how do health and emergency workers experience and make sense of the ‘pressures’ entailed in their jobs? (2) What impacts do these pressures have on their working lives and work performance, both positively and negatively? (3) Can we develop a useful explanatory model for ‘working under pressure’ in complex, volatile and emergency situations? The present article addresses the first question regarding the nature of pressure; a subsequent article will address the question of its impact on performance. Using detailed interviews with workers in a range of roles and from diverse settings across Ecuador, our analysis aims to better understand the genesis of pressure, how people respond to it and to gain insights into managing it more effectively, especially with a view to reducing workplace errors and staff burnout. Rather than imposing preformulated definitions of either ‘pressure’ or ‘performance’, we took an emic approach to gain a fresh understanding of how workers themselves experience, describe and make sense of workplace pressure. This article catalogues a wide range of pressures as experienced by our participants and maps relationships between them. We argue that while individuals are often held responsible for workplace errors, both ‘pressure’ and ‘performance’ are multifactorial, involving individuals, teams, case complexity, expertise and organizational systems and these must be considered in order to gain better understandings of performing under pressure.

Introduction: Professional work is an extremely important aspect of the life of an adult. Probably we all want to be satisfied with this, and not just financially. It can be a source of positive experiences, but also a huge negative burden. It often generates and provides us with many adverse reactions, strains or stresses. The aim of the study was to determine the current status of psychological support to Medical Rescue Teams, and the opinions of medical rescuers on the need for psychological help in their work.Materials and methods: A questionnaire was addressed to medical rescuers across the country; 115 respondents participated in the study. It was conducted in April 2016. A statistical analysis of results was performed using the statistical package PQStat ver. 1.6. Analyses of dependences were carried out with χ2 tests. Significance was considered at p < 0.05, and highly significant was taken at p < 0.01.Results: Almost 90% of respondents had never taken part in a psychological workshop. About 80% of medical rescuers had never participated in training courses on the techniques of relieving tension. In the workplaces of 98 (85.2%) of the medical rescuers, there had never been any group meetings held in which stress was relieved via conversation. Sometimes such meetings were held in the workplaces of 17 (14.8%) of the medical rescuers. More than the half of respondents, 72 (62.6%) people, believe that such meetings are definitely needed and could be effective. Conclusions: 1. The current level of psychological support for Medical Rescue Teams is negligible. Only in a few workplaces it is offered to the medical rescuers. The majority of the study group were not provided access to a psychologist. 2. Medical rescuers believe that the profession requires working with a psychologist, and this cooperation should be ensured by the employer. 3. In 85.2% of cases there were no conversational meetings after difficult actions, with analysis and relieving of emotional tensions. If such meetings were held, almost 90% of respondents would participate. 4. The current ways of reducing stress for medical rescuers are not always safe for their health and can lead to addictions. A possible cause is non-attendance by the majority in workshops on the techniques of relieving tension and psychological training.

Abstract This study examined the mediating effects of facilitating conditions (FC) on the association between types of social support providers and attitude toward using gerontechnology (AUG) or between types of social support and AUG. The sample was 256 older Koreans having a partner and children (N=256; 66-88 years old; M=69.91; SD=4.19). The dependent variable was AUG in terms of an exoskeleton robot for exercise. There were two kinds of independent variables: 1) four types of social support provider (spouse, children, siblings/relatives, and friends/neighbors), and 2) four types of social support (emotional, instrumental, physical, and financial support). Mediating variable was calculated as the mean of FC from five questions. There were two analytic steps: 1) structural equation modeling with four latent variables about types of social support provider, and 2) path analysis with four types of social support if only for significant providers at the first analysis. The results from the first step of analysis showed that only social support from spouses had a significant effect on AUG via FC to use gerontechnology. In the second step of analysis, emotional support from spouses was associated with the higher level of AUG via FC to use gerontechnology. The findings could shed light on the salience of emotional support from spouses in terms of the positive attitude on technology usage in later life through enhancing FC for technology acceptance.

Background. The perception of the role of caregivers for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is important but poorly studied, particularly in patients with low levels of disability.Objectives. To describe the perceptions of the role of caregivers from the perspective of the caregiver, the patient, and neurologists.Methods. This observational study was conducted in France on patients with relapsing remitting MS treated with subcutaneous (SC) interferon-β-1a (IFN-β-1a) for more than 24 months.Results. Caregiver, patients, and neurologists all considered providing moral support and fighting against the disease as the most important role of the care provider. Moral support was considered significantly more important by caregivers than the patients and neurologists (p=0.002) and caregivers considered their role in helping patients to fight disease more important than did the neurologists (p=0.006). Knowledge of disease and available treatments were less important among support providers than patients (p=0.007andp=0.001).Conclusion. There are many unmet needs in the perception of the role of caregivers for people with MS which need to be addressed to deliver the most effective care package for patients and to support the needs of the support provider.
