From Formality to Familiarity: Greeting Formulas in Emails Written by Teachers to ParentsThe purpose of the article is the analysis of greeting formulas in emails written by teachers to parents. The linguistic material is based on 513 email messages sent to parents by means of an online parent portal (e-dziennik). The messages in question were sent by teachers representing a number of schools in Lesser Poland Province. The formal relationship between the participants of the communication and the written form of the exchanges clearly pertains to the traditional formality of the situation; as a result, expectations are raised in terms of the official style of utterances produced under these circumstances. The analysis of the obtained material indicates that greeting formulas used in emails diverge significantly from those used in official paper-based correspondence. Traditional formulas such as Szanowni Państwo (Dear Sir/Madame, Dear Sirs) are clearly replaced by formulas originating from direct verbal communication (Dzień dobry, Witam). There is an apparent tendency to become familiar with recipients by using emoticons or the language formulas present in private correspondence between people who have a close relationship. In addition to the lack of text segmentation, the overall linguistic layout and spelling strategies that prevail in both greeting formulas and the entire body of letters indicate a negligent attitude in terms of text layout.

In the Archivo General de Indias in Seville there exists a remarkable sample of private correspondence between two of the most powerful figures of the Bourbon Age in Spanish American history. The principal writer is Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea, marqués de la Ensenada and minister of Hacienda, War, and Indies and Marine since 1743, and subsequently holder of other posts that made him, in a contemporary opinion, “Secretary of Everything.” His correspondent is José Antonio Manso de Velasco, conde de Superunda and viceroy of Peru from 1745 to 1761, the longest serving and among the most influential of the Peruvian viceroys. The Seville correspondence consists mainly of just seven generally brief letters. The private character of these letters, however, along with the close relationship between the two men and the roles they occupied, makes them historically fascinating. Excerpts are published here for the first time, in both Spanish and English translation.

The article is dedicated to studying the psycholinguistic aspects of the phenomenon of sense in verbal communication. The theoretical analysis of psycholinguistics patterns regarding the subject of the research has allowed for revealing the peculiarities of transforming certain senses into notions by an individual in the course of communication. In verbal communication, the updates of identification, induction, and reflexive evaluation mechanisms of the communicants’ senses provide for the processes of constructing the addressee’s own notional structures along with their further embedment into the linguistic world picture. The addresser, being an active subject of sensemaking, constructs his own messages for the most accurate sense transmission to the addressee, to organize the joint activity and affect the behavior. The purpose of the experimental research was to identify the peculiarities of the senses of communication in adolescent individuals. The most prominent associations of the concept under research have become communication, friendship, mutual understanding, trust, interests. The analysis of the associative field has demonstrated that the respondents view the sense of their own communication mainly in the emotionally close relationship with their agemates. The foreground values in building such relationship are honesty, partnership, a possibility to trust another person, to rely on his/her help when facing hardships. In life-long transspective, the respondents predominantly project the senses of communication in the present time. The senses prolonged into the future are observed only in the association area of the professional academic and professional communication, the formation of which is open and has not been finalized. The priority areas of the semantic field of the concept under research are as follows: the area of the interpersonal interaction proper, the relationship design area, and the area of understanding and interpreting the interlocutor’s messages. The specifics of the development of a contemporary personality in late years of adolescence is represented by the contents of the association areas of self-expression, self-management of one’s own activity, and the communication organization means.

“Zadania praktyczne rewolucji w zaborze rosyjskim” is an original lecture edited to appear in a written form. This caused de-individualisation of the language in which the message is conveyed, limiting idiolectic properties (they have textual rather than systemic nature) and giving the linguistic material of the text exclusively all-Polish features. The style of this text balances between determinants of a nearly academic lecture and features of a political presentation including persuasive elements.

Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to identify parent education procedures implemented in intervention studies focused on expressive verbal communication for nonverbal (NV) or minimally verbal (MV) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parent education has been shown to be an essential component in the habilitation of individuals with ASD. Parents of individuals with ASD who are NV or MV may particularly benefit from parent education in order to provide opportunities for communication and to support their children across the life span. Method ProQuest databases were searched between the years of 1960 and 2018 to identify articles that targeted verbal communication in MV and NV individuals with ASD. A total of 1,231 were evaluated to assess whether parent education was implemented. We found 36 studies that included a parent education component. These were reviewed with regard to (a) the number of participants and participants' ages, (b) the parent education program provided, (c) the format of the parent education, (d) the duration of the parent education, (e) the measurement of parent education, and (f) the parent fidelity of implementation scores. Results The results of this analysis showed that very few studies have included a parent education component, descriptions of the parent education programs are unclear in most studies, and few studies have scored the parents' implementation of the intervention. Conclusions Currently, there is great variability in parent education programs in regard to participant age, hours provided, fidelity of implementation, format of parent education, and type of treatment used. Suggestions are made to provide both a more comprehensive description and consistent measurement of parent education programs.

Reading and writing performance was observed in 30 adult aphasic patients to determine whether there was a significant difference when stimuli and manual responses were varied in the written form: cursive versus manuscript. Patients were asked to read aloud 10 words written cursively and 10 words written in manuscript form. They were then asked to write on dictation 10 word responses using cursive writing and 10 words using manuscript writing. Number of words correctly read, number of words correctly written, and number of letters correctly written in the proper sequence were tallied for both cursive and manuscript writing tasks for each patient. Results indicated no significant difference in correct response between cursive and manuscript writing style for these aphasic patients as a group; however, it was noted that individual patients varied widely in their success using one writing form over the other. It appeared that since neither writing form showed better facilitation of performance, the writing style used should be determined according to the individual patient’s own preference and best performance.
