In a typical cochlear implant design, the ambient sound is detected via a microphone and the transmission unit of the implant is placed at the back of the auricle. However, this design has several drawbacks. Firstly, the subject cannot bath or swim comfortably with the microphone unit on, and secondly having an external attached unit which may be visible is cosmetically disturbing. Herein, the idea is to explore obtaining the acoustic signals that would directly drive the cochlear nerves, without using a microphone, in which only the vibrations of the ossicles are employed. Thus, the natural filter caused by the anatomy of the ear may be maintained. The proposed method is to place or attach a micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) type of tiny and lightweight accelerometer to sense or detect the vibrations of ossicles, namely malleus, incus and stapes. A quick analysis or first-thought revealed that physically longer extension of the incus is the most suitable and/or convenient place to attach such a sensor. The model adopted has been optimized to match the amplitude and phase response of the human ear from a system analysis point of view. Some simulation experiments had been done to study and understand the possible loading effects of placing a sensor on the incus. Purpose of the simulations is testing the feasibility before the very difficult surgical procedures. Preliminary results indicate that placing a sensor of weight up to 36 mg does not seriously affect the amplitude and the phase response of the ear. This study is yet another example of how simulations of physiological systems can be advantageous and facilitating in the design of biomedical systems.

The subject of the research is the directions of development of the gas industry of Ukraine. The purpose of the study is to develop a mathematical model for calculating the program of development of the country's gas industry to solve the problem of choosing options for commissioning of new natural gas fields and intensification of existing fields. The methods of system analysis, linear programming, comparative analysis and expert evaluations are used in the work. A model for calculating a program for the development of the gas industry is proposed to solve the problem of choosing options for commissioning new natural gas fields and intensifying existing fields. The model is based on representing development options with achievable volumes of annual production increase in integer linear programming problems. New and operating natural gas fields can be presented in the model with statistical information on their distribution by reserves and depths with the corresponding development costs, as well as the dependences of the predicted annual production volume on the measures taken and technologies to improve the efficiency of gas extraction. Model calculations provide a two-stage method for determining the options for the development of the industry. At the first stage, a variety of options are optimized according to the criterion of unit costs per 1,000 m3 of gas produced during the entire program period. The second stage ensures the optimal distribution of the selected options between the periods of the program using the criterion of the production volume and with the limited costs of the previous period for the preparation, prospecting and exploration of deposits. The results of calculating feasible options for the development of the gas production industry based on statistical information on volume, mining and geological and cost indicators of the development of resources and natural gas reserves are presented. The calculations investigated the options for the uniform distribution of investment, as well as their growth from the first stage to the next. For both cases, the priority is set for the selection of fields with large reserves at the same depths. Such a procedure for putting fields into operation is expedient, both from the point of view of the criterion for the optimal functioning of the industry over a long period of time – the unit costs of production, and on the basis of considerations of achieving the highest volumes of extraction in the shortest possible time. In the case of small capital investments in the development of the industry, the model selects small-volume reserves of deposits according to the structure of Ukrainian reserves.

Methods for inspecting the integrity of audio recordings become a necessity. The evolution of technology allowed the manufacturing of small, performant, recording devices and significantly decreased the difficulty of audio editing. Any person that participates in a conversation can secretly record it, obtaining their own version of the audio captured using their personal device. The recordings can be easily edited afterwards to change the meaning of the message. The challenge is to prove if recordings were tampered with or not. A reliable solution for this was the highly acclaimed Electrical Network Frequency (ENF) criterion. Newer recording devices are built to avoid picking up the electrical network signal because, from the audio content point of view, it represents noise. Thus, the classic ENF criterion becomes less effective for recordings made with newer devices. The paper describes a novel sonic watermarking (i.e., the watermark is acoustically summed with the dialogue) solution, based on an ambient sound that can be easily controlled and is not suspicious to listeners: the ticking of a clock. This signal is used as a masker for frequency-swept (chirp) signals that are used to encode the ENF and embed it into all the recordings made in a room. The ENF embedded using the proposed watermark solution can be extracted and checked at any later moment to determine if a recording has been tampered with, thus allowing the use of the ENF criterion principles in checking the recordings made with newer devices. The experiments highlight that the method offers very good results in ordinary real-world conditions.

Since 1960, when the first hip prosthesis was introduced, up to now, several implant typologies have been proposed trying to meet the increasing clinical demands of more and more active and young patients. A substantial evolution of implant design has been occurring, both in terms of materials and geometry, basically driven by their tribological performances. Indeed, the main concern of hip implants consists in the release of wear debris, which can lead to implant loosening and failure. Thus, many studies on wear and lubrication of hip prostheses have been published in the last 15 years, mainly focused on experimental researches but also on numerical/modeling approaches. The aim of this work is to review the history of hip implants from a tribological point of view with a focus on ceramic-on-ceramic replacements, which represent the most advanced solution in terms of wear strength and chemical inertness. The main drawbacks of these implants, as the brittleness and the squeaking, are discussed and novel solutions examined.

Purpose of Study: The present study was designed to study possibilities, conditions, grounds and limitations regarding the use of technologies and units of artificial intelligence in public administration. Determinants of the need to use such technologies in public administration were also considered. In this study, directions of realizable engagement which is already implemented, as well as directions of the possible use of artificial intelligence units in the future for public administration were investigated to ensure the functioning of system of state executive bodies. Methodology: The present research carried out based on the application of research methods such as system analysis, synthesis, and classification. Using these research methods, the concepts of describing conditions, possibilities, modes and functional-target load of using technologies and units of artificial intelligence in public administration, as well as limitations of its application in public administration were developed. Results: It was found that the use of artificial intelligence by the state for performing its various own tasks is highly relevant as it might lead to finding many positive approbations. However, despite the fact that technologies and artificial intelligence units have been developed for a relatively long time, and some of them are already widely used, it is still impossible to talk about the integrated, fully tested and properly regulated implementation of this kind of technology and units for management, therefore, it is suggested to further investigate on this issue from a theoretical (prognostic) point of view, taking into account potential directions and possibilities regarding    the use of such technology and units. Implications/Applications: The use of technologies and units of artificial intelligence does not necessarily take into account as a panacea for solving the problems and may not lead to solving some systemic problems in public administration, but, on the contrary, may even aggravate some existing problems in public administration and contribute to the emergence of new problems and risks.
