AbstractA decrease in the weight of aerospace vehicles, large ships, weapons, and high-speed trains will increase the demand for wide-width magnesium alloy plates and their composite parts to replace steel and plastic. An investigation was conducted to study the variation in deformation behaviors along the transverse direction during the warm rolling of a 1480-mm-wide AZ31B plate. A uniaxial thermal compression test with a 59 % reduction was performed at different positions on a 13.7-mm-thick rolled plate along the width direction at a temperature of 220 °C and 270 °C and strain rate of 15 s−1. At the same time, the 13.7-mm-thick plate was rolled in a single pass to 5.6 mm on a mill with a 1725-mm-wide roll to confirm the thermal deformation behavior and the dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The results show that the main texture type does not change and the grain size does not have a clear deflection when the magnesium alloy plate reaches a certain value under rolling accumulative reduction. The grain size of a 13.7-mm-thick plate increases with a decrease in the distance to the center layer in the thickness direction. In the width direction, the edge (R6) first decreases and then increases toward the symmetric plane (R1). The critical stress required for dynamic recrystallization in the transition zone R3 of the rolled plate width is minimum, and the average grain size is minimum owing to the relatively complete recrystallization.

A Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK)-model was established for dynamic recrystallization in hot deformation process of 52100 steel. The effects of hot deformation temperature, true strain and strain rate on the microstructural evolution of the steel were physically studied by using Gleeble-1500 thermo-mechanical simulator and the experimental results were used for validation of the JMAK-model. Through simulation and experiment, it is found that the predicted results of DRX volume fraction, DRX grain size and average grain size are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Mechanical properties of a nano-structured Al-8Fe-2Mo-2V-1Zr alloy produced by spray forming and subsequent hot-extrusion at 420°C were investigated in terms of tensile test as a function of temperature. Warm rolling was adapted as an additional process to expect further refinement in microstructure. Well-defined equiaxed grain structure and finely distributed dispersoids with nano-scale in particle size were observed in the spray formed and hot extruded sample (as-received sample). The average grain size and particle size were measured to 500 nm and 50 nm, respectively. While it was found that warm rolling gives rise to precipitate fine dispersoids less than 10 nm without influencing the grain size of matrix phase, in the temperature range of RT∼150°C, distinguishable changes in ultimate tensile strength were not found between the as-received and warm-rolled samples. At elevated temperatures ranging from 350 to 550°C, warm-rolled sample showed a higher value of elongation than as-received one although similar values of elongation were observed between two samples at temperatures lower than 350°C.

Hot-core heavy reduction rolling (HHR2) is an innovative technology, where a two-high rolling mill is installed after the solidification end of a strand, which can significantly eliminate the core defects of the slab. The mill exhibits a heavy reduction ratio, which promotes the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of the slab. This study aims to optimize the parameters of the HHR2 process considering the effect of DRX on microstructure homogeneity. The secondary development of commercial software DEFORM-3D is conducted to calculate the deformation and DRX behavior of HHR2 for different reduction ratios. The parameters of DRX volume fraction and DRX grain size are compared, and finer DRX grains are obtained when the greater reduction ratios are conducted in HHR2. Then, corresponding to the deformation conditions in the HHR2, the thermal–mechanical simulations are conducted on the Gleeble3800 to obtain the average grain sizes before and after this process. When the reduction amount increases from 20 mm to 50 mm, the difference of average grain size between the core and the surface reduces by 52%. In other words, appropriately enhancing the reduction ratio is helpful to reduce the average austenite grain and promote the microstructure uniformity of the slab. These results provide some valuable information on the design of deformation parameters for HHR2.

Microstructures of metal micro parts after microforming at elevated temperatures must be evaluated due to mechanical properties depend on average grain size. In this work, the effects of specimen diameter on the microstructure and microhardness of a hot-extruded AZ31B magnesium alloy were studied. Obvious size effect on microstructure and microhardness of the alloy could be observed. The size effects could be explained by strain distribution and dislocation density differences between the two kinds of specimens.

Material’s plastic deformation by hot forming processes can be used to make the materials generate dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and fine grains and accordingly products with more excellent mechanical properties, such as higher strength and larger elongation can be obtained. In this study, compression tests and water quenching are conducted to obtain the flow stress of the materials and the grain size after DRX. Through the regression analysis, prediction equations for the magnesium alloy microstructure were established. Simulations with different rolling parameters are conducted to find out the relationship between the DRX fractions or grain sizes of the rolled products and the rolling parameters. The simulation results show that rolling temperature of 400°C and thickness reduction of 50% are the optimal conditions. An average grain size of 0.204μm-0.206μm in the microstructure is obtained and the strength and formability of ZK60 magnesium alloys can be improved.

In the present study, the effect of laser surface melting (LSM) on microstructure of AZ91D magnesium alloy was investigated with a 2kW continuous wave CO2 laser. The results indicate that both the substrate and laser melted layer mainly consisted of α-Mg and β-Mg17Al12, the amount of β-phase in laser melted layer was decreased as compared to that of the substrate. The microstructure of the laser surface melted zone consists of fine dendrites with an average grain size of less than 10m, the grain size was reduced by a factor of more than 10 times as compared to that of the substrate. The micro-hardness of the melted layer was increased to 70–85HV as compared to that of the substrate (about 53HV). Because of the grain refinement, the enhancement of the hard phase β-Mg17Al12, and the solid solution hardening of alloy elements, the micro-hardness and strength of the laser melted layer was increased significantly.

Our recent studies showed that continuous and cellular precipitates are covered with the whole of crystal grain in age hardable AM60 magnesium alloy cast into permanent molds, which have the average grain size of 75-85μm. Also, continuous precipitation is generated nearby grain boundary in the same alloys cast into sand molds, which have the average grain size of 138-147μm. It’s thought that permanent mold castings have the age hardening behavior of intragranular precipitation participation type that is influenced by continuous precipitates. It’s also thought that sand mold castings have the age hardening behavior of grain boundary participation type that is influenced by cellular precipitates. In this study, AM60 magnesium alloy with larger grain size was used to detect the grain size dependence of microstructure and aging behavior. In the microstructure of as-cast condition, the larger the grain size, it was shown that the none-equilibrium crystallized β phase with eutectic reaction during the solidification between liquidus and solidus temperatures becomes large-size. In the age hardening curves, the peak hardness values become higher with decreasing of grain size.

AbstractThe effects of Bi on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ80-2Sn alloy were investigated. The results show that the addition of Bi within the as-cast AZ80-2Sn alloy promotes the formation of Mg3Bi2 phase, which can refine the grains and make the eutectic phases discontinuous. The addition of 0.5 % Bi within the as-extruded AZ80-2Sn alloy, the average grain size decreases to 12 μm and the fine granular Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases are dispersed in the α-Mg matrix. With an increase in Bi content, the Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases become coarsened and the grain size increases. The as-extruded AZ80-2Sn-0.5 %Bi alloy has the optimal properties, and the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are 379.6 MPa, 247.1 MPa and 14.8 %, respectively.

The effects of repetitive upsetting extrusion under different starting temperatures on the microstructure and texture of GWZK124 alloy were investigated. The results clearly showed that the particles and second phases induced dynamic recrystallization (DRX), which can be explained by the particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) mechanism. It was shown that grain refinement during repetitive upsetting extrusion (RUE) is dominated by a complicated combination of continuous dynamic recrystallization and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. The RUEed alloys under different starting temperatures exhibited a bimodal microstructure comprising fine DRXed grains with weak texture and coarse deformed grains with strong texture. The DRXed grains could weaken the texture. As the RUE starting temperature decreased, the average grain size increased and the volume fraction of DRXed grains decreased.
