Occasional Speech Acts

Speech acts are considered as minimal units of speech activity and as a three-component structure consisting of ilocution, locution and perlocution. Varieties of speech acts are distinguished depending on a statement illocutionary purpose: assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, declarations (according to J. Searle). The possibility of these speech acts occasional nature is emphasized. A speech act occasionality is achieved by using a nomination in a corresponding communicative situation. This nomination has novelty over time and outside the conditions of its speech generation, the absence of a wide (frequency) situational functioning, created on occasion, often with an author’s intention. Specific examples of communicative situations containing a kind of an occasional speech act are given. It is noted that occasional speech acts are a key point in the study of a pragmatic approach to language phenomena, when a producer intensity – to produce a certain speech action – comes to the fore.

Insya Allah has been part of the Indonesian language and culture for a long time. However, there were very few linguistics studies on the use of Insya Allah. This study aimed to analyse the use of Insya Allah in the Indonesian context using the pragmatic approach. A total of 100 utterances spoken by various speakers at various situations were collected. The study focused on identifying the types of speech acts performed by Insya Allah using Searle’s speech act taxonomy (Searle, 1979). At the second stage, the pragmatic functions of Insya Allah were identified using a combination of classifications used by Pishghadam and Kermananshahi (2012), Nazzal (2005), Ibrahim, Shah, and Armia (2013), and Mohamed Ali (2014). The findings showed that Insya Allah was a reliable marker for commissive and expressive speech acts. This study also found two additional pragmatic functions of Insya Allah which have not been identified in previous studies.

In this paper, we highlight the centrality of verbs relating to verbal activities in witchcraft narratives in the Early Modern English period, and focus on speech act verbs used to refer to witches’ curses. In the first part, we refer to various classifications of speech act verbs and to Searle’s felicity conditions for speech acts, in order to describe the different meanings of verbs such as to curse, and to show how their central meaning has shifted over time. In the second part, we show how the speech act verbs form a structured set, which — in appropriate circumstances — could be used as an interpretative frame to create witchcraft events out of relatively trivial arguments within village communities. Here, we refer to Levinson’s notion of activity types as a possible explanatory framework.
