Footprints are left, or obtained, in a variety of scenarios from crime scenes to anthropological investigations. Determining the sex of a footprint can be useful in screening such impressions and attempts have been made to do so using single or multi landmark distances, shape analyses and via the density of friction ridges. Here we explore the relative importance of different components in sexing two-dimensional foot impressions namely, size, shape and texture. We use a machine learning approach and compare this to more traditional methods of discrimination. Two datasets are used, a pilot data set collected from students at Bournemouth University (N = 196) and a larger data set collected by podiatrists at Sheffield NHS Teaching Hospital (N = 2677). Our convolutional neural network can sex a footprint with accuracy of around 90% on a test set of N = 267 footprint images using all image components, which is better than an expert can achieve. However, the quality of the impressions impacts on this success rate, but the results are promising and in time it may be possible to create an automated screening algorithm in which practitioners of whatever sort (medical or forensic) can obtain a first order sexing of a two-dimensional footprint.

AbstractAn improved structural bond strength (SBS) model has been developed to quantify the correlation between glass compositions and their chemical durabilities. The SBS model assumes that the strengths of the bonds between cations and oxygens and the structural roles of the individual elements in the glass are the predominant factors controlling the composition dependence of the chemical durability of glasses. The structural roles of oxides in glass are classified as network formers, network breakers, and intermediates. The structural roles of the oxides depend on glass composition and the redox state of oxides. A12O3, ZrO2, Fe2O3, and B2O2 are assigned as network formers only when there are sufficient alkalis to bind with these oxides. CaO can also improve durability by sharing non-bridging oxygen with alkalis, relieving Si0 2 from alkalis. The binding order to alkalis is AI2O3>ZrO2>Fe2O 2>B2O2>CaO>SiO2. The percolation phenomenon in glass is also taken into account. The concentration of network formers has to reach a critical value for a glass to become durable; durable glasses are sufficient in network formers and have a complete network structure; poor durability glasses are deficient in network formers and the network is incomplete and discontinuous. The SBS model is capable of correlating the 7-day product consistency test durability of 42 low-level waste glasses with their composition with an R2 of 0.87, which is better than 0.81 obtained with an eight-coefficient empirical first-order mixture model on the same data set.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between translators’ epistemological beliefs and gender on their Persian-to- English translation quality. To do so, a group of 53 MA translation students both male and female were selected, through convenient sampling to participate in this study. For data collection two instruments were employed: 1- Epistemic Beliefs Inventory (EBI) 2- Translation Test including a piece of poem. Regression analysis was also conducted to explore the interaction of epistemological beliefs and gender of translators on their translation quality. The findings indicated that there is no significant relationship between the components of epistemological beliefs and translation quality, except in one case that QL (quick learning) has a negative relationship with translation scores. Translators’ gender significantly affects the translation quality. An implication of the results is that males translate significantly better than females regarding the quality of translation. The interaction of translators’ epistemological beliefs and gender significantly affect the translation quality.

Crimes have affected the quality of life and economic growth of the country badly. The authors can identify the crime patterns and predict the crimes by detecting and analyzing the historical data. However, some crimes are unregistered and unsolved due to a lack of evidence. Thus, detecting crimes is a still challenging task. Individuals can use social media like Twitter to detect crime-related activities. Because Twitter users sometimes convey messages related to their surrounding environment, this paper proposed a machine learning approach to predict crimes. The proposed framework consists of three modules: data (tweet) collecting, detecting crimes, and predicting crime. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network model was used as a proposed approach for crime prediction. Experimental results found that by achieving the highest precision of 82.5%, precision of 86.4%, and recall of 80.4%, the proposed LSTM-based approach worked better than the other approaches.

AbstractDesigning models for learning textual entailment recognizers from annotated examples is not an easy task, as it requires modeling the semantic relations and interactions involved between two pairs of text fragments. In this paper, we approach the problem by first introducing the class of pair feature spaces, which allow supervised machine learning algorithms to derive first-order rewrite rules from annotated examples. In particular, we propose syntactic and shallow semantic feature spaces, and compare them to standard ones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed spaces learn first-order derivations, while standard ones are not expressive enough to do so.

GP 32 (molecular weight 35000) is a T4 bacteriophage protein that destabilizes the DNA helix. The fragment GP32*I (77% of the total weight), which destabilizes helices better than does the parent molecule, crystallizes as platelets thin enough for electron diffraction and electron imaging. In this paper we discuss the structure of this protein as revealed in images reconstructed from stained and unstained crystals.Crystals were prepared as previously described. Crystals for electron microscopy were pelleted from the buffer suspension, washed in distilled water, and resuspended in 1% glucose. Two lambda droplets were placed on grids over freshly evaporated carbon, allowed to sit for five minutes, and then were drained. Stained crystals were prepared the same way, except that prior to draining the droplet, two lambda of aqueous 1% uranyl acetate solution were applied for 20 seconds. Micrographs were produced using less than 2 e/Å2 for unstained crystals or less than 8 e/Å2 for stained crystals.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a telecommunications technology that is able to pass the communication service in Internet Protocol networks so as to allow communicating between users in an IP network. However VoIP technology still has weakness in the Quality of Service (QoS). VOPI weaknesses is affected by the selection of the physical servers used. In this research, VoIP is configured on Linux operating system with Asterisk as VoIP application server and integrated on a Raspberry Pi by using wired and wireless network as the transmission medium. Because of depletion of IPv4 capacity that can be used on the network, it needs to be applied to VoIP system using the IPv6 network protocol with supports devices. The test results by using a wired transmission medium that has obtained are the average delay is 117.851 ms, jitter is 5.796 ms, packet loss is 0.38%, throughput is 962.861 kbps, 8.33% of CPU usage and 59.33% of memory usage. The analysis shows that the wired transmission media is better than the wireless transmission media and wireless-wired.

Digital imagery is a two-dimensional image process through a digital computer that is used to manipulate and modify images in various ways. Photos are examples of two-dimensional images that can be processed easily. Each photo in the form of a digital image can be processed through a specific software. In the water environment, the light factor greatly influences the results of the quality of the image obtained. With the deepening of underwater shooting, the results obtained will be the darker the quality of the underwater image. . uneven lighting and bluish tones. One of the factors that influence the recognition results in pattern recognition is the quality of the image that is inputted. The image acquired from the source does not always have good quality. The process of repairing digital images that experience interference in lighting. The lighting repair process uses homomorphic filtering and uses contrast striching and will compare the quality of both methods and test to prove the results of image quality between homomorphic filtering and contrast streching. Until later the results of both methods can be seen which is better. homomorphic filtering and contrast stretching can produce image improvements with pretty good performance. Keywords: Digital Image, Underwater Image, Homomorphic Filtering, Contrast Streching, Matlab R2010a
