Background and Aim: Pelung chickens make unique, pleasant, and rhythmic sounds in addition to having strong muscle mass. Performance is controlled by testosterone. A natural aromatase blocker is an agent capable of blocking the aromatase enzyme, which consequently prevents testosterone from being changed into estradiol. Such a condition results in consistently high testosterone levels. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the administration of the shell powder of Anadara granosa on the testosterone level, frequency and quality of sounds, and metabolism of Pelung chickens within set parameters of thyroid hormone levels, the triiodothyronine (T3)/thyroxine (T4) ratio, and weight gain. Materials and Methods: This study used four Pelung chickens aged 14 months. Control data consisted of data before treatment (day 0). Shell powder of A. granosa was administered for 56 days. Body weight (BW) was measured, and blood samples were drawn. In addition, the sounds from Pelung chickens were recorded once every 2 weeks on days 14, 28, 42, and 56. The blood samples were analyzed using the enzyme immunoassay method to determine testosterone, T3, and T4 levels. The sounds of Pelung chickens were recorded using the Hagemon touch method and analyzed using the Audacity application. Results: The results showed a significant difference (p<0.05) in the levels of testosterone, BW, and sound frequency after the administration of A. granosa shell powder, but the administration did not have a significant effect on the levels of T4 and T3 hormones (thyroid hormone), T3/T4 ratio, or sound duration. The testosterone content and BW of Pelung chickens increased from day 14 to day 56, whereas T3 was indicative of the same profile as the T4 hormone. However, T3 and T4 levels and the T3/T4 ratio decreased and increased, respectively. The sound frequency of Pelung chickens increased from day 0 to day 14, although sound duration decreased. Conclusion: The administration of A. granosa shell powder at 0.9 mg/kg BW orally could improve the metabolism, testosterone level, BW, and sound frequency of Pelung chickens.

Objective. The aim of this study was to compare the differences in thyroid hormone, intelligence, attention, and quality of life (QoL) of children with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) before and after endoscopic adenoidectomy.Method. A total of 35 OSAHS children (21 males and 14 females with a mean age of6.81±1.08years) were included in this study for analyzing the levels of thyroid hormone, intelligence, attention, and QoL. There were 22 children underwent endoscopic adenoidectomy with bilateral tonsillectomy (BT), while the other 13 children who underwent endoscopic adenoidectomy without bilateral tonsillectomy without BT.Results. Our results revealed no significant difference in serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in OSAHS children before and after endoscopic adenoidectomy (allP>0.05). However, there were significant differences in full-scale intelligence quotient (FIQ) (92.45±5.88versus106.23±7.39,P<0.001), verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ) (94.17±15.01versus103.91±9.74,P=0.006), and performance intelligence quotient (PIQ) (94.12±11.04versus104.31±10.05,P=0.001), attention (98.48±8.74versus106.87±8.58,P<0.001), and total OSA-18 scores (87.62±17.15versus46.61±10.15,P<0.001) between before and after endoscopic adenoidectomy in OSAHS children.Conclusion. Our findings provided evidence that the intelligence, attention, and QoL of OSAHS children may be significantly improved after endoscopic adenoidectomy.

Blood samples from killed and livetrapped deer of southern and central Ontario were analyzed for thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Mean seasonal levels for six sex-age classes of deer ranged from 150 to 400 ng/dL (T3) and from 6.0 to 18.0 μg/dL (T4). Seasonal variation of T4 was less pronounced than that of T3. Both hormones decreased in the fall as compared with spring and summer, especially in yearling and older bucks. T3 values were also low in the winter but increased in spring and summer for most tested categories of deer. Differences in seasonal T3 and T4 concentrations were found between male and female deer older than 1 year, and among sex-age classes of the same sex. Regional differences in thyroid hormone levels suggested a latitudinal gradient, with higher values in southern than in central Ontario. Hormone of artificially fed deer were elevated when compared with animals that consumed only natural browse. Hormone levels were also higher in deer provided with food supplements of higher protein content. Extremely low winter T3 and T4 concentrations were found in malnourished deer. It is concluded that thyroid hormones in deer blood are influenced by current food intake and quality of nutrition. The potential for T3 and T4 as indicators of range quality is discussed.

Background and Study Aim. Thyroid hormone responses to acute maximal aerobic exercise is still unclear, so the aim of the study is to investigate the effect of acute maximal aerobic exercise resulting in fatigue on blood thyroid levels in men and women. Material and Methods. The study included 8 male and 7 female subjects who did not actively exercise. Both group participants were students in the Kastamonu University in the period of study. The heights, weights, resting hearth rates and 5 cc. venous blood samples of subjects were taken before the exercise. The subjects warmed up for ten minutes before they had 20 m shuttle run. The purpose of this test was to tire the subjects to the exhaustion. The heart rate were measured at the end of the test in order to determine the exhaustion levels of the participants. The 5 cc. venous blood samples were taken again just after the exhaustion exercise. Statistical analysis was carried out using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 23 program (SPSS Inc. Chicago. II. USA). P value was set at p<0.05. Results. When results were compared between both sexes, no significant difference was found among variables (p>0.05). There was significant change in TSH values in all group. They increased following the exercise compared to pre-exercise values. Moreover, total T3 decreased in all group. No other significant difference was found in free T3 and free T4 variables. Conclusions. In conclusion, thyroid responses to exercise emerge in a very complex way, which makes it difficult to reach a clear conclusion about its effects. The reason why the results are so contradictory is that the duration and intensity of the exercise, age, not being able to control the diet, and the timing of collection of blood samples after exercise.

The limited success of embryonic transfer technique in alpacas is related to the high variability of superovulation protocols, the response to which depends on, among other factors, the number of antral follicles growing along a follicular wave. The concentration of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is correlated with antral follicle count, making it a reliable biomarker for identifying the number of available follicles and allowing us to ensure the reproductive potential of females. Studies in different production animals exist, but, thus far, no published studies exist on the use of AMH as a biomarker in alpacas. Thus, its study is necessary in order to be able to choose the best donors for embryonic transfer, reducing response variability and unnecessary expenses in superovulation protocols. The objective of this study was to determine whether AMH is a reliable marker for the number of follicles and quality of oocytes in an induced follicular wave in alpacas. We used 52 female, nonpregnant Suri alpacas of reproductive age (3–7 years), with a body condition score between 2.5 and 3.5 (where 1 is extremely thin and 5 is obese), and with the presence of a preovulatory follicle (diameter ≥7mm) determined through transrectal ultrasound. Blood samples were collected from nonpregnant Suri alpacas 5 days post-induction of ovulation and divided into groups according to AMH concentration. AMH concentrations were then correlated with the number of follicles and percentage by sizes of follicles using the least significant difference test with adjusted means. To relate the quality of oocytes with the AMH concentration groups, a Chi-square test was used. The high-AMH group had a greater number of follicles than the low-AMH group (20.51±2.76 vs. 11.58±2.55; P=0.036). There were no significant differences between AMH groups and percentage of follicle sizes. However, the high-AMH group had a greater percentage of follicles 3- to 7-mm long (67.49%). Furthermore, the high-AMH group showed dependence on the quality of oocytes (P=0.02). These results indicate that the plasma concentration of AMH can be a reliable marker for follicle and oocyte quality in Suri alpacas. Future investigations are needed to ensure the optimal timing to collect blood samples, a kit individualized to the species, and improvement of the future donors for current superovulation protocols in alpacas.

SummaryTo characterize the extent of early activation of the hemostatic system following angioplasty, we obtained blood samples from the involved coronary artery of 11 stable angina patients during the procedure and measured sensitive markers of thrombin formation (fibrino-peptide A, prothrombin fragment 1.2, and soluble fibrin) and of platelet activation ((3-thromboglobulin). Levels of hemostatic markers in venous blood obtained from 14 young individuals with low pretest probability for coronary artery disease were not significantly different from levels in venous blood or intracoronary samples obtained prior to angioplasty. Also, there was no translesional (proximal and distal to the lesion) gradient in any of the hemostatic markers before or after angioplasty in samples obtained between 18 and 21 min from the onset of the first balloon inflation. Furthermore, no significant difference was noted between angioplasty and postangioplasty intracoronary concentrations. We conclude that intracoronary hemostatic activation does not occur in the majority of patients during and immediately following coronary angioplasty when high doses of heparin and aspirin are administered.

SummaryThe aim of this study was to determine whether the concentration of trisodium citrate used to anticoagulate blood has an effect on the INR of the sample and the ISI of the thromboplastin. Five thromboplastins including and Australian reference material were used to measure the prothrombin time of normal and patient samples collected into two concentrations of trisodium citrate - 109 mM and 129 mM. There was no effect of citrate concentration on the INRs determined with the reference material. However for the other four thromboplastins there was a significant difference between INRs for the two citrate groups. The prothrombin times of the samples collected into 129 mM were longer than those collected into 109 mM. This difference was only slight in normal plasma but more marked in patients receiving oral anticoagulants, causing the INRs for patient plasmas collected into 129 mM citrate to be higher then the corresponding samples collected into 109 mM citrate. From orthogonal regression of log prothrombin times by the reference method against each thromboplastin, we found that the ISI for each thromboplastin was approximately 10% lower when determined with samples collected into 129 mM citrate than with samples collected into 109 mM. These results suggest that the concentration of trisodium citrate used for collection of blood samples can affect the calculation of the INR and the calibration of the ISI of thromboplastin. This was found both for commercial thromboplastins prepared by tissue extraction and for a recombinant tissue factor.

SummaryAim: Assessment of the clinical benefit of i.v. contrast enhanced diagnostic CT (CE-CT) compared to low dose CT with 20 mAs (LD-CT) without contrast medium in combined [18F]-FDG PET/CT examinations in restaging of patients with lymphoma. Patients, methods: 45 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 35) and Hodgkin's disease (n = 10) were included into this study. PET, LD-CT and CECT were analyzed separately as well as side-by-side. Lymphoma involvement was evaluated separately for seven regions. Indeterminate diagnoses were accepted whenever there was a discrepancy between PET and CT findings. Results for combined reading were calculated by rating indeterminate diagnoses according the suggestions of either CT or PET. Each patient had a clinical follow-up evaluation for >6 months. Results: Region-based evaluation suggested a sensitivity/specificity of 66/93% for LD-CT, 87%/91% for CE-CT, 95%/96% for PET, 94%/99% for PET/LD-CT and 96%/99% for PET/CE-CT. The data for PET/CT were obtained by rating indeterminate results according to the suggestions of PET, which turned out to be superior to CT. Lymphoma staging was changed in two patients using PET/ CE-CT as compared to PET/LD-CT. Conclusion: Overall, there was no significant difference between PET/LD-CT and PET/CE-CT. However, PET/CE-CT yielded a more precise lesion delineation than PET/LD-CT. This was due to the improved image quality of CE-CT and might lead to a more accurate investigation of lymphoma.
