AbstractObjectiveThe present study assessed the impact of the retailer-led removal of unhealthy beverages from display at a self-service café within a major health service. While unhealthy beverages remained available from behind the counter upon request, this was not communicated directly to customers.DesignDrinks were categorised based on the state government nutrient profiling system, classifying drinks as ‘green’ (best choices), ‘amber’ (choose carefully) and ‘red’ (limit). Total drink sales (as number of items sold per week) in the café were measured for five weeks. All unhealthy ‘red’ beverages were removed from display (but were still available for purchase) and the sales of all beverages were measured for another six weeks.ResultsWe found that, in response to this strategy, the proportion of ‘red’ drinks sold decreased from 33 % to 10 % of total drink sales. As ‘amber’ and ‘green’ drink sales increased in response to this strategy, total retailer sales remained steady. Most consumers appeared to switch to purchasing ‘amber’ drinks rather than the healthiest option, ‘green’ drinks.ConclusionsThe removal of unhealthy beverages from display can result in consumers making healthier purchases, while not significantly affecting retailers’ sales.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND PRACTICE OF VALUES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ABSTRACTEnvironmental education is fundamental in the life of the human being, allows developing habits that lead to the sustainable development of society and awareness of the natural environment on which we depend for the existence of life as we know it. The regulations that are established in a country are not those that will improve environmental knowledge and attitudes; but the constant education of each member of society; because they are the individual actions that added together collectively have the effect of changing the habits and culture of a community. Faced with this situation, teachers of educational institutions must be pioneers in environmental issues. There is still a lack of environmental awareness, because of that irreversible events have already occurred in the environment such as the loss of green areas and the extinction of species, among other consequences that will continue to be added if we do not act now. This research was carried out in the facilities of the State Technical University of Quevedo, with the purpose of assessing the impact that environmental education has on its students and the practice of values derived from this topic. The methods used in the research are analytical, descriptive and deductive; the results show that at least half of the students occasionally apply values of environmental education in their daily days for the care of the environment; while the majority of students agree that the little practice in environmental education leads to the contamination of ecosystems. KEYWORDS: environment; environmental education; environmental values; sustainability; sustainability.

This study empirically examine the impact of government expenditure on education on human capital development in Kaduna State over the last 15 years (2000-2015) using econometrics model with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) technique. The paper test for presence of stationary between the variables using Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) and autocorrelationusing Durbin Watson statistics. The results reveals all the variables were not stationary in levels except capital expenditure (CE) and Primary schools enrolment (PE) while the rest were stationary at second difference. DW shows presence of serial correlation. The regression results indicated that government expenditure on education have significant impact on human capital development in Kaduna State. It could therefore be recommended that the state government should increase its capital and recurrent expenditure on education, ensure proper management and monitory of funds made for the teachers, constant payment of teachers salaries and allowances in a manner that it will raise the state production capacity. The state should construct addition primary and secondary schools across the state, with modern facilities, and employ more teachers.

Kindergarten education is becoming a priority throughout the USA as research shows its importance on later in life outcomes. The State of Washington instated full-day kindergarten for all public-school students beginning in 2016–2017. It “…is part of the state’s constitutionally protected definition of ‘Basic Education’” (Reykdal, n.d., n.p.), working to support all children in the state. Acting on this new state requirement, one school district chose to design and build a center dedicated solely to kindergarten education, housing approximately 600 kindergarteners. The school was divided into four ‘neighborhood pods’ each with immediate access to specific activity programs (i.e., dining, interventionists, elective functions) reflecting a new ‘expanded push-in’ model and reduce transition times. This model was compared with a ‘traditionally’ operated kindergarten where learners travel to activity programs throughout a campus (i.e., dining, interventionists, electives). A human-centered research design using mixed-methods for this comparison study between an ‘expanded push-in’ and a ‘traditional’ model was used to understand the impact of this new architectural solution particularly focused on timing transitions between the classroom and activity program settings. Findings discovered a reduction in the length of transitions between accessing the programs by recaptured seven school days of learning time (approximately 45 hours), when compared to the traditional one, and more positive connections between students/students, teachers/teachers, and students/teachers to build community.

Several studies in the past show that the work done by the incumbent government helps the ruling party to get re-elected. However, most of these studies focus on re-election and do not look at the impact assessment of governance on trust in government, which is a precursor of re-election. To fill this gap, this article explores whether perceptions of good governance lead to trust in government. The results support the view that governance at the state level leads to a higher trust with the state government. Of all the variables used to measure governance as access, benefitting from welfare schemes had the maximum impact on trust. Other governance measures like availing public services and citizens’ interaction with the state too had a positive relationship with trust in the state government. Furthermore, having the same government at the centre and the state, strengthened one’s trust in the state government.

Mingzu University is a common name for educational institutions for ethnic minorities established in China in 1950. By establishing such kind of higher education institutions, PR China as a state pursued several goals. In one hand, they started the opportunity for minor ethnic groups` representatives enter a higher education institution and thereby enlist their support for the state government. In the other hand, China saves the originality and the identity of small nationalities` cultures at the state level by studying and promoting it. Today such educational institutions also serve to train leading cadres from ethnic minorities’ representatives, loyal to the state system and the political and social course of modern China as they are brought up in the spirit of modern Chinese social and pedagogical guidelines. The article aims to represent different social functions of Minzu Universities as a social phenomena common for China as well as cultural and social strategy of the PR China state in the field of ethnic minorities, an important part of which is implemented through them. Using the research methods typical for scientific studies of this kind (mainly empirical and theoretical ones) the article proves the idea that Mingzu Universities in China play a great not only the educational, but also social role in the country to form an ideologically homogeneous society and respect for human rights in the country.
