AbstractThe influence of stress factors on a plant may lead to worse functioning of the plant and the loss of its crop. The effect of Aulacorthum solani feeding on Trollius europaeus with regard to active compounds in the leaves was investigated in the study. The antioxidant activity of the leaves, the material on which the insects fed, was compared with that of the material that was not infested by the aphids. Stress level was evaluated on the basis of such physiological parameters as chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis activity. An increase of 34.5% in the content of polyphenolic compounds, as compared to control, was demonstrated in the material exposed to the biotic stress caused by aphids. The content of phenolic acids was 28% higher while that of flavonoids rose by 25%. The increase in polyphenolic compounds augmented the antioxidant activity of the material.

Grapes are rich in primary and secondary metabolites. Among the secondary metabolites, polyphenolic compounds are the most abundant in grape berries. Besides their important impacts on grape and wine quality, this class of compounds has beneficial effects on human health. Due to their antioxidant activity, polyphenols and phenolic acids can act as anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic agents, and can modulate the immune system. In grape berries, polyphenols and phenolic acids can be located in the pericarp and seeds, but distribution differs considerably among these tissues. Although some classes of polyphenols and phenolic acids are under strict genetic control, the final content is highly influenced by environmental factors, such as climate, soil, vineyard, and management. This review aims to present the main classes of polyphenolic compounds and phenolic acids in different berry tissues and grape varieties and special emphasis on their beneficial effect on human health.

Introduction. All over the world, natural medicine uses species of the genus Melilotus due to their anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, analgesic, spasmolytic, astringent, diuretic and anticoagulant effects. In the Polish Pharmacopoeia, only the yellow melilot herb (Meliloti herba) has a monograph. Aim. The research was aimed at a comparative analysis of the content of the sum of polyphenolic compounds, including the sum of flavonoids and phenolic acids, and antioxidant activity in water extracts of M. officinalis and M. alba herb and root. Material and methods. The research was carried out for two species of Melilotus officinalis and M. alba. The raw material was herb and melilot root, collected during flowering period from natural sites. In aqueous extracts from raw materials, the following methods were determined by colorimetric methods: the sum of polyphenolic compounds using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, the sum of phenolic acids using the Arnov reagent, the sum of flavonoids using the Christ-Müller method and the antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-radical hydrazyl (DPPH). Results. Meliloti alba herb has a much higher content of polyphenols, including phenolic acids and flavonoids than M. officinalis. In the yellow sweet clover the sum of polyphenols in the samples ranged from 2.101 to 2.438%, while in the white sweet clover from 2.765 to 3.540%. The content of phenolic acids in the samples of yellow sweet clover herb was 0.617-0.766%, and in the samples of white sweet clover herb was 0.646-0.900%. The content of flavonoids in the samples of yellow sweet clover herb ranged from 0.748 to 0.975%, and in the case of white sweet clover herb it was at the level of 0.801-1.192%. The samples of the commercial yellow sweet clover herb had the lowest content of phenolic compounds; the sum of polyphenols was 1.579%, phenolic acids 0.361%, and flavonoids 0.441%. The determined content of total polyphenols in the roots of both melilot species was low and amounted to 0.450% in MORA1 and 0.362% in MARA2. Despite the lower content of polyphenolic compounds (2.438%), the yellow melilot showed higher antioxidant activity (IC50 = 4.35 mg/ml) compared to the white melilot herb (IC50 = 5.31) with a higher content of polyphenols (3.010%). Conclusions. A higher content of the sum of polyphenols as well as phenolic acids and flavonoids was found in the white melilot. In both the yellow and white sweet clover herb extract, significantly more polyphenolic compounds were determined compared to the content in their root extract.

Chestnut fruit abounds in carbohydrates, proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, fiber, polyphenolic compounds, as well as vitamins and micronutrients, that are behind the health-promoting properties of this plant. The purpose of the discussed research was to obtain innovative gluten-free pasta from rice and field bean flour enriched with a various addition of chestnut flour. Regarding the studied pasta, the following were determined: the content of free phenolic acids, total polyphenols, and antioxidant properties. Chromatographic analysis (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS (high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry)) revealed a wide variety of phenolic acids. In a sample with 20% and higher content of chestnut flour, as many as 13 acids were detected. Isoferulic acid prevailed. The total content of free phenolic acids and total polyphenols increased along with the increasing chestnut content. Moreover, in most cases, the content of individual acids increased with the addition of chestnut flour. Besides, the antioxidant activity was positively correlated with the addition of chestnut fruit flour, the content of free phenolic acids, and total polyphenols. Our research has demonstrated that our innovative gluten-free pasta, with the addition of chestnut flour, has a potential to be a source of polyphenolic compounds, including free phenolic acids, that are valuable for human health.

Abstract The aim of this work was to develop a cream formulation with potential antioxidant properties. Herein, a freeze-dried extract of Ligusticum mutellina was used as a source of active compounds. The proposed qualitative composition of the cream was characterized by a good polyphenolic compounds release profile. Of note, the highest R2adj values were obtained for the Korsmeyer-Peppas and Higuchi models (0.9159 and 0.9226, respectively). These results indicate that a freeze-dried extract of L. mutellina, due to its retained high phenolic acids content, could become a key component in antioxidant creams.

Abstract Investigation of stress level might be facilitated also in plant and horticultural sciences, but currently mainly morphological parameters are in use. Antioxidant activity routinely measured in food-oriented researches and several studies indirectly indicated that stress factors can influence this parameter. Our aim was to assess the potential direct indicator role of antioxidant activity in stress conditions. We measured the effects of UVB and soil-delivered stress on Agaricus bisporus and Sedum hybridum. Our results indicate that UVB slightly decreases, while the inadequate soil conditions increase antioxidant activity; hence these measurements are suitable for determining the level of stress in different living samples.

This study aims to find the treatment of diabetes using natural materials by exploring plants in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. his research was conducted out by extracting the Strychnos nitida G.Don stem using a method of maceration by ethanol 70%. Ethanol extract was then fractionated using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Simplicia from maceration and fractionation results were then tested for antioxidant activity, α-glucosidase inhibition activity and identification of active compounds. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction had the lowest IC50 value of 86.83 μg / ml. Results of the α-glucosidase activity test showed that ethyl acetate fraction and n-heksan fraction at 900 ppm had the highest percentage of inhibition of 34.23% and 33.89%. Identification using LCMS/MS method showed that ethyl acetate fraction consist of Benzenemethamine, N, N-dioctyl- as an antioxidantcompound and compound 24-methyl-5-cholestone-hexol as an antidiabetic compound. From the results of this study, we concluded that the extract of kayu ular Strychnos nitida G.Don stem has inhibition activity toward α-glucosidase enzyme.

Polyphenolic compounds, plant secondary metabolites essential for plant survival, are known for their high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. In addition, several polyphenols, such as phloretin, also have potential antiviral effects, making these compounds potential ingredients of biofunctional foods. A promising source for the extraction of phloretin is a by-product of apple production—apple tree leaves. Focusing on green technologies, the first aim of the present study was to optimize the direct ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions to gain the maximum yield of phloretin from air-dried apple leaves. For the optimization of process parameters, we applied the response surface method with Box–Behnken design. The optimal extraction conditions were extraction time 14.4 min, sonication amplitude 10% and 10 g of sample per 100 mL solvent (70% ethanol, w/w). Using these conditions, we assessed the content of individual and total polyphenolic compounds along with antioxidant activity in the leaves of different autumn and winter apple cultivars grown in Estonia. The analyses were carried out with chromatographic (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS) and spectrophotometric methods. The phloretin concentration ranged from 292 to 726 µg/g and antioxidant activity from 6.06 to 11.42 mg GA eq./g, these being the highest in the local winter cultivars ‘Paide taliõun’ and ‘Tellissaare’, respectively.
