This chapter follows the association of motorcycle taxis after the end of the Red Shirts protest. It explores the attempt by military forces to cut off the drivers from the social movement and include them into the state security apparatus. The chapter shows how the association was divided between two conceptions of power—barami and amnāt—and positions this tension at the core the Thai political conflict in the last decade. We are not facing a binary, but rather the unresolved tensions and the failed attempts to combine two conceptualizations of power that need to coexist, even with their contradicting features. To govern Thailand, one needs to needs to have both amnāt and barami, both to claim moral charisma and institutional power, juggling both of them. The conflict, this chapter argues, emerged because, since 2006, no political figure has been seen able to do so.

When do protest organizations borrow issues or claims that are outside their traditional domains? Sociologists have examined the consequences of borrowing claims across movement boundaries, but not the antecedents of doing so. We argue that movement boundaries are strong when there is consensus about the core claims of a social movement, which we measure by cohesion and focus. Cohesion and focus enhance the legitimacy of a movement and impede member organizations from adopting claims associated with other movements. Analyzing movement organizational activity at U.S.-based protest events from 1960 to 1995, we find that a social movement organization is less likely to adopt claims from other movements when the social movement in which it is embedded exhibits high cohesion and focus. However, when movement organizations do borrow claims, they are more likely to do so by borrowing from movements that themselves exhibit high cohesion and focus. We describe the application of our findings to organization theory, social movements, and field theoretic approaches to understanding social action.

This article analyzes the reorganization of public memory space in postsocialist Poland and how the state and municipal councils use it to legitimate themselves. Drawing on research conducted in Gdańsk, the birthplace of the social movement (Solidarność) that questioned the legitimacy of the socialist state in the 1980s, it examines the proposed redevelopment of the shipyard where the movement was formed. While the redevelopment sets out to create a public memory space, it is rife with contradictions, for it involves demolishing many buildings associated with the movement. What legitimated the municipal council’s authority over its memorial landscapes was not so much its rediscovery of complex local histories as it was its ability to define the local past in “material” terms.

Studies of social movements have often focused on the role of the state vis-à-vis social movements—in recent times using the concept of political opportunity structure to understand the options available to social movements. This article examines the internal conflicts within the ruling party in Communist Poland to show that a reciprocal process proceeded, in which both the social movement and the state found the choices of action available to them limited by the other, rather than just the social movement. The social upheaval that impacted the entire country brought about the rise of a reform movement within the ruling Polish United Workers Party, which prevented the government from acting as it preferred for a significant period of time. That reform movement, which would not have existed without Solidarity and certainly would not have brought about intraparty changes by itself, saw itself as connected to and dependent upon Solidarity. Party conservatives had to respond to and overcome the reformers before they could turn their full attention to ending the challenge Solidarity presented to the Communist system. In effect, for a time, Solidarity limited the political opportunity structure of the state, while the reverse was also true. While social movement scholars have long considered the possibilities and the limits on possibilities available to social movements because of the state or other external circumstances, this experience demonstrates that similar considerations must sometimes be contemplated with respect to the state.

Qualities that can make activism possible under an authoritarian regime can become disadvantages when restrictions on the political field are eased. Under the Mubarak regime in Egypt, the March 9 Group for University Autonomy, a small group of academics, campaigned against the interference of the state security apparatus and the ruling party in academic affairs and campus life. This article suggests that the group’s survival in that context, and its ability to organize successful campaigns within certain limits, depended on the involvement of highly accomplished academics, some of whom are well-known outside academia, on its practice of a particular type of participatory democracy, and on its focus on institutional autonomy from the state. All these assets became liabilities following the revolutionary uprising of January 2011, and the group has to a large extent demobilized as a result.

Abstract. Elfriede Jelinek, winner of the Literature Nobel Prize in 2004, is a tireless creator of stereotyped characters. Through the application of irony, the protagonists of her works are used with the intention of exciting critical thought about the social roles and actions expected to be played by women and men within a society. A year before being awarded the Nobel Prize, Jelinek released a body of plays under the title of Death and the Maiden I-V. Princess Plays (Der Tod und das Mädchen I-V. Prinzessinendramen, 2003). In this work, the Austrian writer rewrote two of the most famous fairytales featuring princesses, such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, as well as a legend played by Rosamunde. These tales are part of the core of Western literary tradition. In using them, she reinvents the story of other real characters and women from our historic and cultural panorama: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis or writers like Sylvia Plath and Ingeborg Bachmann. The main goal of the present paper is to analyse the problem posed by the existence of a beauty canon in these Princess Plays insofar as the construction and depiction of female identity is subdued by the control and supremacy of a patriarchal society. To do so, and following a psychoanalytical approach, the theme of the mirror will be the main focus as an instrument which brings or hinders the acknowledgement of these princesses. Keywords: Elfriede Jelinek, postdramatic theatre, fairytales, psychoanalysis, mirror.

Abstract: The police investigation would be the instrument that the judicial police uses to subsidize the owner of the action and to form their opinion about the crime, given that it exercises fundamental importance in the delimitation of an infinite number of crimes (against the person, patrimony, popular economy , Etc.) with the purpose of solving the crimes that devastate the social peace. The present article seeks to discuss the critical reflexes caused by the promulgation of Law 13.245 / 16 in the Police Inquiry with the possibility of applying the Mitigated contradiction in the pre-procedural phase. To do so, the application of the constitutional principles of ample defense and contradiction in the police Inquiry and identification of the modifications caused by law 13245/16 that reached the institute of the Police Inquiry will be brought to the dynamics of the investigative phase in a Brazilian inquisitorial model. The methodology used was exploratory and qualitative, based on a bibliographical review as a technical procedure. The results presented come from the possibility of using the Mitigated contradiction in the pre-procedural phase with the entry into force of Law 13.245 / 16 as an affirmative activity and guarantor of the State in effecting the defense of the suspect / indicted in the investigative procedure.

Abstract Drawing on a social movement theoretical framework, the paper explores the collective action desires and attempts expressed within the African associational milieu in Belgium to improve the social, economic and political being of the African-rooted people in Belgium. It thus focuses on the emergence of non-profit organisations aiming at mobilising people of sub-Saharan African descent under a common ‘Pan-African’ banner. It analyses the link between the context for the emergence of these associations ‐ in which the state played an important role ‐ their working modes and their members’ affiliation strategies, as a way to address a ‘lack of mobilisation’ frequently deplored by many African associational leaders. Secondly, it shows how a certain African elite tries to go beyond old rivalries and previous failures, by shaping a Pan-African community, symbolically located both in the African life ‘here’ (in Belgium and by extension Europe) and ‘there’ (in Africa).
