The disaster, the death, and the monster are said to be God’s will. It shows that the fundamental of belief is changed from blessing life to cursing life. Furthermore, society’s moral has degenerated that they justify the wrong thing as right, and otherwise because they only think about their safety. The problem in this thesis is the irony of love story between two human beings who are in love, the irony occurs when the fate has separated their love story. The tragic story of Hazel and Augustus' love is inspired by the author's visit to chronic cancer patients at the hospital, about their hopes and love that would be impossible to achieve. In this writing, library research is taken as the method of data collection. As for data analysis method, the writer performs systematic procedures by understanding the novels, the characters of Hazel and Augustus, as well as the structural theory. Data collection technique uses documentation technique in finding relevant data to the subject of analysis. In data analysis techniques, the writer uses structural technique by analyzing the novel based on the elements that shape them. The results of research in this thesis are: 1) destiny seems to separate the love story of Hazel and Augustus, where Hazel is suffered from the chronic cancer while Augustus is in good shape, but Augustus is willing to love Hazel until the end of life, 2) destiny continues to play their love story, this time it is August that suffers from chronic illness and is on the verge of death, while Hazel's condition is getting better. This time, it is Hazel that loves Augustus until the end of his life, and faithfully accompanied him; 3) the irony has occurred in the love story of Hazel and Augustus where the unfair destiny has turned the deaths and hopes on both of them, the one who is almost dies has become better, on the contrary the one who is healthy has been picked by the death in the end. The love story and hope of being together have been ironically played by the fate.

Reality of pluralism in the contexs of Indonesia on the one hand, is a challenge towards the implementation of Christian Religious Education. However, on the other hand, Christian Religious Education is becoming very essential for Christians to demonstrate the love of God in the midst of society. Christians are always in touch with adherents of other religions, even that kind of relation feels so strong in various areas of life. This problem triggers how the idea of implementing the Christian Education is relevant in the pluralistic context in Indonesia. This study was analyzed using qualitative research methods through library research techniques. Findings showed that, in the pluralistic context, the implementation of Christian Religious Education in Indonesia as an integral part of the mission can be carried out through three aspects, namely: revitalizing the thinking paradigm about pluralism; interpreting the implementation strategy of Christian Religious Education in a pluralistic society; and mainstreaming and buliding the vision and mission of multicultural based Christian Religious Education.

Every period in history has its own unique identity. Meiji period in historical Japan is no exception to this, having its own identity called the spirit of Meiji. This research attempts to reveal this identity, which present in the story of Kokoro, by using binary opposition. Binary opposition allows comparing and examining contradicting elements. Since the spirit of Meiji is defined as having “two contradictory elements”, therefore, binary opposition is suitable for revealing the spirit of Meiji.

The goal of this research is to show how binary opposition constitutes as a crucial element to the unique identity of Meiji period, which is the spirit of Meiji. In order to achieve this, two research problems are used as guides. One is how story of Kokoro presents the binary oppositions and two is how the spirit of Meiji manifests in the binary oppositions.

In this research, library research was conducted in order to collect the relevant data. It uses texts in both printed form and digital form. The primary source for the research is the novel Kokoro by NatsumeSōseki while the secondary sources are taken from various books and articles.

The first step in explaining the spirit of Meiji is to examine the binary oppositions within in the story. The binary oppositions itself are revealed through the characters and the setting of the story. Through these two elements, five binary oppositions are revealed. They are past against present, old against young, rural against urban, community against privacy, and family against individual. These binary oppositions are then compared to the situation in real-world Meiji period in order to validate whether they really are the spirit of Meiji or not. It is then, through this direct comparison, the binary oppositions are found mirroring the situation in the real Meiji period. Therefore, it can be concluded that binary opposition is the manifestation of the identity of Meiji period, which is the spirit of Meiji.

Keywords: binary opposition, Meiji period, spirit of Meiji.

_________________________________________

DOI > https://doi.org/10.24071/joll.2019.190208
