Sea cucumber is one of the important fishery commodities and has high economic value in Asia. Technology for seed production of sea cucumber has been developed and able to produce juveniles for supporting sea cucumber farming. Feed is an important factor that largely determines the success of sea cucumber farming. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate several feed formulas based on seaweed powder for good growth performance of sea cucumber juveniles. Four experimental feeds were prepared by using a combination of several different raw materials, especially for the seaweed. The experimental feeds were prepared in pelleted form with protein and lipid content of 14% and 4.5%, respectively. Fresh benthos was used as the control feed. Juveniles of sea cucumber from hatchery with average weight of 2.0 ± 0.6 g and total length of 2.8 ± 0.5 cm were distributed into 20 of 150 L polycarbonate tanks, with a density of 50 juveniles per tank. Sea cucumber were fed the experimental feeds once a day in the afternoon for 120 days. The experiment was designed with Completely Randomized Design, with five dietary treatments and four replications. Results of the experiment showed that juvenile sea cucumber fed the artificial feeds produced significantly higher (P<0.05) growth (weight gain 341.3%-386.8%) and survival (92.5%-97.5%) than that of the control which were 126.9% and 75.0% for weight gain and survival, respectively. However, growth of juveniles among the artificial feed treatments was not significantly different (P>0.05). Protein content of sea cucumber fed the artificial feeds was significantly higher (22.3%-24.4%) (P<0.05) than that of the control (18.4%). Results of this study indicated that juveniles of sea cucumber could utilize artificial feed properly and Sargassum sp. based diet could be applied for nursery of sea cucumber juveniles.

The need to seek for alternative feed materials with nutritional and medicinal values to support livestock growth necessitated this study. Forty-five unsexed rabbits crosses (Chinchilla × Newzealand white) 5- 6 weeks old with average weight of 720g were used in a 10- week feeding trial to evaluate the performance of growing rabbits fed on varying levels of dried okra leaves. The rabbits were assigned into five treatment groups containing dried okra leaves (DOL) at 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% inclusion levels for dietary treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) respectively. Each treatment consisted of 9 rabbits and replicated thrice with each replicate consisting of 3 rabbits in a completely randomized design. Data collected were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results indicated that daily feed intake was significantly (P<0.05) largest in rabbits fed 5.00% inclusion level of dried okra leaves (84.57g) and least in rabbits fed 0.00% level of inclusion of dried okra leaves (72.12g). Feed efficiency (FE) was poorest (P<0.05) in rabbits fed 10.00% DOL (0.15%) and best (0.20%) in rabbits fed 2.50% dried okra leaves. It was concluded that okra leaves can be included in diets for growing rabbits and 2.50% level of dried okra leaves inclusion is recommended for adoption by farmers to maximize profit.

Gourami fish (Osphronemus goramy Lac.) is a freshwater fish commodity that has high economic value because its very popular with all people. But the feed commonly used by gourami fish cultivators is factory-made feed, which is a commercial feed that usually costs quite a lot of money due to the material for making commercial feed, some of which still import from abroad. Therefore it is necessary to find a solution to reduce the cost of cultivation production by replacing commercial feed with homemade feed made from local raw materials. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of local raw materials formulated to make feed suitable for the growth of gourami fish (Osphronemus goramy Lac.) And to analyze the production costs of goramy feed made from local raw materials. This study consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications using the completely randomized design (CRD) method. The treatments consisted of treatment A (30% protein), treatment B (33% protein), treatment C (36% protein), and treatment D (commercial). The results of this study indicate that the treatment of feed A, B, and C produced the same growth as commercial feed, and treatment of feed A resulted in the lowest feed production costs compared to other treatments. Key word: feed, growth, local raw materials, Oshphronemus goramy

Cake of shea nut is an agroforestry by-product and residue after fat extraction from shea nuts for fat with no economic value and its increasing output has become an environmental issue lately. A 30-day study was conducted to investigate the apparent nutrient digestibility and carcass yield of broiler chicken fed cooked cake of shea nut diets of different fermentation periods. A total of 144 unsexed Arbor Acres Plus day-old broiler chickens were divided into four dietary treatments with four replicates of nine birds each in a completely randomized design. The results showed that fermentation enhanced the nutrient profile of cake of shea nut meal especially concerning crude protein and crude fiber as compared to raw cake of shea nut meal. The treatment values for crude protein and crude fiber digestibility showed significant (p < 0.05) differences amongst the dietary treatments while other nutrient parameters measured were not significantly (p > 0.05) different. There was no significant (p > 0.05) difference amid the treatment means for the control (carcass, breast and liver yield) and the carcass, breast and liver yield of broiler chickens fed diets containing different periods of fermented-cooked cake of shea nut meal.

Eel is one of the fisheries commodity that have not been rearing widelyin Indonesia. Constraint that occured in rearing eel is slow growth. A way to accelerate eel growth isfeeding with enrichment by using an amino acids. An amino acids can be used directly by eel for cell growth and the formation of body tissue. An amino acid that is used from the stingrays are not utilized by people  because it has no economic value to production activities. This research was aimed to study the growth rate of eel whichis fed with enrichment of an amino acids derived from stingray extract. The method in this research used completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 3 replications. The measure of eel that usedare 26-28 cm, the average weight is 28 grams and an amino acids dosage that used are 0 ml, 0.5 ml and 1 ml. It use FR 3% which is given at night to support the characteristic of eel that is nocturnal (active at night). The analyze result from the parameters that have been observed, there is not a significant effect (P> 0.05) and the fed with enrichment by using an amino acids with the dosage used hasn't been able to be utilized as fish feed mixture to increase growth rate.

Abstract Background Twenty-four West African Dwarf (WAD) goats with average weight of 6.57 ± 0.56 kg were used in investigating the effect of microbial-treated maize cob and husk diets on blood profile. The goats were assigned to six dietary treatments replicated four times in a completely randomized design. Chopped maize cobs and husks were sterilized for 60 min to eliminate any form of contamination and then inoculated with mixture of 15 ml each of Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Neurospora crassa and incubated anaerobically for 5 days and then air-dried. The treated maize cob and husk were incorporated in the diets at the rate of 0% (diet), 20% (diet B), 30% (diet C) [maize cob diets], and 0% (diet D), 20% (diet E), 30% (diet F) [maize husk diets], respectively. The animals were acclimatized for two weeks while the experimental period lasted for 56 days. A completely randomized design was adopted. Results The results showed that the dietary treatments significantly (P < 0.05) influenced the erythrocyte sedimentation rate which ranged from 0.50 to 1.00 mm/hr. Significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed in the globulin (28.16 g/dl diet A—59.26 g/dl diet B), aspartate aminotransferase (48.00 u/l diet E—128. 25 u/l diet C) and alanine aminotransferase (8.20 u/l diet A—33.33 u/l diet D). Serum electrolytes values were significantly (P < 0.05) influenced by dietary treatments. Conclusion Based on the findings of this study, microbial-treated maize cob and husk diets supported erythropoiesis did not induce any liver damage and the serum electrolytes of the animals were improved. Hence, microbial-treated maize cob and husk can be a suitable alternative feed source at 30% incorporation in a complete diet for WAD goats as adverse implications on the health of the animals was not observed.

In a bid to decrease cost of production and increase performance in poultry, the study aimed at determining the growth performance and haematological characteristics of pullet chicken fed different feed forms supplemented with or without oyster mushroom (OM), three hundred and twenty (320) day old Harco Black pullet chicks were brooded for five weeks before they were allocated based on weight equalization on the basis of feed forms (mash and pellet) and OM supplementation (without and with 1g of OM per kg of feed) into four (4) treatments for an experiment which lasted for eleven weeks. Each treatment consisting of 80 birds was replicated eight (8) times with ten (10) birds per replicate. Data collected were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial layout and subjected to Analysis of Variance in a Completely Randomized Design. Final weight, average weight gain and average feed intake in the grower phase were significantly (p<0.05) higher (1244.69g, 11.13g and 106.11 g) in birds given pelletized feed and lower (1146.25g, 9.27g and 105.08 g) in birds fed mash. Also, PCV, WBC, and Hb obtained in the starter phase were significantly (p<0.05) higher (30. 00%, 2.70 x 10 /l and 10.10 g/dl, respectively) in pullet chicken fed diet supplemented with oyster mushroom than those (26.75%, 2.12 x 10 /l and 8.85 g/dl, respectively) recorded by birds fed diets without oyster mushroom. Therefore, improved weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and immunity can be achieved by feeding pullet chickens with pelletized feed supplemented with oyster mushroom.

Assessment of carcass and meat characteristics of Nellore young bulls finished in feedlot with crude glycerin levels (0, 60, 120, and 240 g kg-1 dry matter) in millet-based diets. Twenty-eight young bulls with mean age of 18 months and average weight of 357 ± 23.56 kg were used. The animals were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and seven replicates. It was observed that the physical composition and edible portion of the carcass were not affected by crude glycerin levels in the diets. However, the increased dietary crude glycerin level raised the weights of the forequarters (kg and % of cold carcass weight), but not that of the pistol cut and short ribs. Among the commercial cuts prepared to marketing of the pistol cut, only the weight of the rump cap (% cold carcass weight) was changed, decreasing linearly with increasing dietary crude glycerin levels. Additionally, meat characteristics remained unaltered by the increased levels of crude glycerin. It was concluded that inclusion of up to 240 g kg-1 of crude glycerin in millet grain-based diets for Nellore young bulls finished in feedlot does not alter the main carcass and meat characteristics or affect their economic value.
